Jungle orchid, wild fig, bourbon geranium, twilight oudh, and pluot. The chamber labels are great IRL. This is STRONG. Yes, please. Mostly orchid with a touch of fruit. The Oudh is strong too but really pleasant. A bit of herbal from the geranium. Smells like a fancy British accent? Posh? Seems like it will hang around a while too.

Invention, it must be humbly admitted, does not consist in creating out of void, but out of chaos. ― Mary Shelley, 1831 This Samhain, were reveling in the desecration of a classic blend: Damp woods, fir needle, and black patchouli with the gentlest touches of warm pumpkin, clove, nutmeg, allspice, sweet red apple and mullein. #7. I was excited for my number. First sniff of the Chaos HG is fresh and floral which is an interesting counterpoint to the leafy deep smell I was expecting. I still get the lovely apple but its tropical fall. Pikaki or plumeria? Almost a cocoa butter undercurrent. Not chocolatey.

And the life of the ebony clock went out with that of the last of the gay. And the flames of the tripods expired. And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all. Darkness, Decay, and the Red Death: blood musk and black tobacco, birch tar and bleeding cypress sap. I'm such a sucker for tobacco. Even when all the other notes don't particularly call me, I'm still willing to try it for the tobacco. Wet: musk, perhaps of the red or blood variety. I don't really know the difference. I can smell the cypress in the background. Drydown: Oh, hello, tar. Why are you here to ruin this party? Darkness and Decay, indeed. Cypress is still hanging out, just kinda waving from the back of the room. Dry: The birch tar and cypress have combined to create this interesting platform where they work together to hold up the musk and hint of tobacco. In an oddly bright red, but in a dangerous way. I feel like this leans masculine on me, with the tobacco, tar, and cypress holding back any sweetness. The musk is slowly trying to round out these scoundrels, bringing a bit of sweetness. I didn't expect this sort of change. It's still too much tar and cypress for me to enjoy, though. Much later: It's sweetened up significantly. It ends up smelling like an slightly evil version of Smut on me. So, I guess there's blood musk in Smut, and I'm amping the musk here.

The remnants of bonfire smoke and incense. OK, I guess I'll go first ... This is a very pretty scent. It's very light, and "lemony" .. I don't get "bonfire smoke", like the Bonfire Smoke atmosphere spray. If I get woodsmoke at all .. it might be a faintly smoldering pile of cedar, from a distance.. The "incense," I can't pick out the notes of. This doesn't seem to be a "morpher". i get a one-note, light, lemony sort of faint cedar smoke. I'm crap at picking out exact fragrance notes when I don't know what the components are. Light to medium throw. But I like it. It's a sweet, and pretty scent.

Every leaf tells a story. Oh wow I love this! I've had my bottle 2 weeks now and it has settled noticeably. On initial application it is very sharp with the Leaves note, with a sweetness behind it. It doesn't smell to me exactly like scotch, but a really nice warm boozy sweetness. As it wears, the sharp note fades, and the deep sweetness becomes more prominent. It lasts quite a while on me too - there is usually a hint of it on me the next day. Can't wait to see how this ages.

Harrison Weir Golden apples, cedar and redwood trellises heavy with grapevine, beeswax, hemp, vanilla benzoin, and bois de rose. I like this blend a lot when I first put it on. The apples, wood, grapevine and hemp all combine nicely. I can't smell the beeswax or vanilla. It mostly disappears after about ten minutes, sadly. I've only had it for a week, though, so maybe it needs more time to become more than a close skin scent.

Every leaf tells a story. The first thing I notice is that this scent is STRONG, and I think it gave me a scent headache when I first tried it. I do like it, though. For a few seconds it smells like soap, right when I first put it on. That feeling fades a bit as it dries. This is a very strong nag-champa-like incense scent. It does have a borderline soapy aspect, but I have always thought that nag champa smells a little soapy, so that fits here. This scent doesn't really change much over time. The leaves note is present and I think it combines to amp up the incense feeling. I really can't pick out any sugared chestnut, except for possibly a hint. I have a feeling this scent needs to age and settle down a bit. It does smell a bit like Midnight on the Midway, but stronger. I imagine wearing this in the summer but I'm weird like that. : ) -
Every leaf tells a story. Let me start off my saying that I'm not a big "dead leaves" fan. But that's merely due to ignorance, I haven't smelled enough of them to really know if it's something I would like. But apricot and tobacco sounded awesome. First, in the bottle, it smells like some fruit that is overripe, beginning to rot. Not pleasant. First try on the back of my hand: On the skin, it retains that overripe smell, and slowly mellows during the drydown. Once dry, it's much different. Lightly feminine, lightly sweet, lightly fruity. The first thing that comes to mind is apricot gum. I don't know of any apricot gum, so it's a weird association. Maybe a bit like the smell when you initially walk into a Pier 1 imports store. Like vaguely woody and sweet. To my nose, I'm not getting any tobacco, but if I think hard enough, I can imagine tobacco leaves. I think my skin is sucking up the apricot, I'm beginning to only smell a salty musk, which I assume is the ambergris. It eventually settles into a clean, oceanic skin musk. Second try in crook of arm: I remember someone saying that if you don't like something, try a "dry" and "wet" spot. Elbow is going to be warmer, so trying again. Still starts out overripe. I think the apricot is a bit louder this time, with the subtle ambergris in the background. This kinda smells like a cocktail you might get in a fancy restaurant. Still not picking up any tobacco. The fruit is hanging on longer, and everything is settling into a sweeter skin musk. Off to sell!

Albert Bierstadt Ponderosa pine, mountain big sagebrush, black locust, pinon pine, white fir, fragrant snakeroot, and Rocky Mountain sage. Just from the bottle, I can already tell that this is exactly what I was hoping for! I spent most of my life in Montana and also lived in Colorado for a few years, and now that I live in the desert, I really miss the smell of those evergreen forests. I have Elf HG, which I love, but it has more of a spring and summer vibe, and I’ve been wanting a darker forest hair gloss to wear with scents like Golden Priapus, Theoi Nomioi, and some Yules that I have with the pine-y snow note. So this was the scent I was most looking forward to from the Trading Post Weenie update (part one)... because it's a darker evergreen forest scent WITH GOATS ON THE LABEL. This hair gloss did not disappoint. When I smell it, I am transported back to those wonderful forests. There’s a blast of pine at first, and it remains the main player throughout, but I do get the sage behind it, and after a while, some fir. I feel like the sage becomes more prominent after a few hours of wear. While some scents become light after a few hours after being applied to damp hair, this isn’t one of them, and I imagine that the scent would have even more longevity and strength when applied to dry hair, as that’s usually the case with most hair glosses. I am thrilled that this is a thing. If you are wanting forest-scented tresses, don’t let this one pass you by! I absolutely adore this and am so glad that I leapt for a bottle.

The external world could take care of itself. In the meantime it was folly to grieve, or to think. Ginger-squeezed champagne with crushed diamonds, orange blossoms, and peach blossoms. The orange and peach blossoms were calling me. I should have known better when it comes to champagne. It ends up smelling like a fancy cleaning solution on me. I get a hint of ginger, but the champagne really amps on me. I can smell the peach and orange blossom hanging out in the background, but I really have to take a deep whiff. This is such a clean scent, I think it would make a great atmo spray. Coming back to this a bit later: the balance between the champagne and blossoms feels a lot more balanced. And it seems like it sweetened up a bit. Still not for me, though.

Sweet black tobacco infused with dried pumpkin and soaked in bourbon. In the bottle: YES PLEASE - this is Pumpkin French Tobacco. On my skin: The pumpkin pushes the tobacco scent over into a warm caramel-like smell, which tones down the cologne qualities of the tobacco scent nicely. Warm, a little heavy, great for cooler weather. On someone else in my house: Where French Tobacco goes super-sweet typically, this one holds down into a more moderately spicy tobacco scent with pumpkin. There's still a bit of that caramel sweetness but it's not overwhelming. We actually argued about who will be taking more of this bottle and decided that a second might need to be purchased.

I was scared of this one - salt often goes terribly for me and brings too much ozone. No need! In the bottle: aftershave in a smoky room. On my skin: The bay rum, whiskey, and cigar smoke all contribute to a classic aftershave scent and the black pepper adds just a hint of light spiciness that keeps it from veering into too sweet or too heavy. The salt, as far as I can tell, is absent. On someone else in my house: Baby powder, through and through. (Skin chemistry is so weird.)

Every leaf tells a story. In the bottle: French Tobacco meets October. On my skin: We called this the perfume tour. Seriously, it was like touring a number of fantastic perfumes as it dried down - unfortunately for me, this means that at the end it dried down into a too-sharp tea scent that smelled like a number of perfume samples all stacked up. On someone else in my house: Fortunately for my testing partner, this means it goes through a number of warm, tobacco-rich, vanilla-adjacent scents and then settles into dry leaves, warm vanilla tobacco, and a little bite of tea. Absolutely delightful.

Every leaf tells a story. In the bottle: Do you remember the way The Seekim smelled in the bottle? That warm but dry cacao scent? This is like a mocha version of that. On my skin: All coffee cherry - and by that I mean, cherries that soaked in some kind of sweet coffee, maybe. It just got sweeter and sweeter and took on a very heavy cherry scent somehow. Entirely bizarre and no leaves at all. On someone else in my house: Warm, wet leaves and slightly sweet coffee. Like having sweet flavored coffee on a porch on a rainy day in the late fall. Too sweet for my tastes, worked out well for my testing partner!

Engraving by G. van der Gucht after J. Wootton Bay rum, hay, dried alfalfa, aftershave, and cork stalk. In the bottle: oh! Did The Great Sword of War and Antikythera Mechanism have a spicy baby? On my skin: The first few minutes of this were glorious. That aftershave note really brought out the best of the feelings of Old Spice and the bay rum brought some warmth. However, as it dried down something added an ammonia scent and as it dried down it only got stronger. Boo. On someone else in my house: Warm aftershave with a slightly dry woodsy feel. It was described as "1930s sexy masculine scent" when dried down by the wearer. Definitely has a classic men's scent feel with some added woodsiness. Not a win for my picky skin but my testing partner got a win here.

Dead Leaves, Bourbon Vetiver, Nagarmotha, and Vanilla Absolute

Every leaf tells a story. In the bottle: mossy, warm, a little vanilla, a hint of vetiver. On my skin: I have two choices with vetiver - it either amps beyond all comprehension or settles in and provides a woodsy warmth. This scent has the second one with a nice mellowing of vanilla. There's an ozone quality here I can't quite place but it carries this scent straight into "crisp fall day among rustling leaves." Where October gives me all of the damp-day fireside warmth of leaves, this one is a nice dry-leaves scent that's not quite as sharp or bright as A World Where There Are Octobers or Sonnet D'Automne. On someone else in my house: All vetiver, all the time with a hint of soapy vanilla. -
[No additional description provided.] Pomegranate is a note that can be hit-or-miss on me, but Alice is one of my top favourites, so I had to try this! This is mostly juicy, slightly sweet pom mixed with carnation. There is a hint of the honey-milk sweetness underneath, but the scent doesn't really say "Alice" to me. The throw and staying power are moderate right now, but I'm hoping settling and aging will improve everything. Overall though, it is a pretty scent.

Lorenz Frølich Caramelized patchouli, cream, and thick golden honey. This reminds me of the smoky bonfire/earth scent that's in Samhain drizzled with cream and honey, only more smoke and earth and less sugary sweetness. This feels like it's going to be a much-coveted instant classic. It's cozy and witchy and the honey and cream are very prominent, but not cloyingly so. I might have to buy a backup bottle or two!

Wet: Same tart raspberry from Raspberry Sufganiyot mixed with red currant to give it depth. Deliciousssss. Dry: Tartness calms down and now I'm getting a bit of the goat's milk to smooth it out. Still quite fruity. Drydown: Becomes mostly red currant with the tartness of raspberry and a bit of milk with some goat-y nuttiness around the edges. Very bright, moderate to strong throw and average longevity.

But all at once as if awakened, she turns her face to yours; and with a shock, you see yourself, tiny, inside the golden amber of her eyeballs suspended, like a prehistoric fly. – Rainer Maria Rilke Sleek black fur and gleaming amber shining in the shadows, a rumble of myrrh, and claws as sharp as ti leaf. fans of the beautiful Raven Black and Pugsley hair glosses from the post should rejoice that there is a stunning perfume oil to layer seamlessly with them. inside the golden amber is a beautiful feminine musky black tea scent. soft and sleek and slightly more refined/subdued in feel than either of those two glosses...although both glosses have significantly upped their ooOmph since they first landed, so this might also increase in sillage over time. the label art is adorable

This is very pretty! I expected it to be fairly dry, but smells pretty creamy to me. Sweet and ambery, I don't get any hay and I can't say if I smell corn husks either. Three hours in and it's hanging on pretty well, which counts as fairly long lasting on my skin.

A blackened lavender mist, thick with opoponax, licorice root, and benzoin. ahhhhh this is one of those scents that's just so perfect, I can start circulating a conspiracy theory that beth made it just for me. lavender and licorice===the hottest dream pairing of 2018?? those two beautiful notes play and blend and support each other so well that they are my new blueprint for #relationshipgoals. the lab's opoponax is one of my favorite resin notes, and it adds its magical richness to this blend. with the name and the lavender, I had anticipated wearing this as a sleep blend, but instead it's become my go-to scent to wear out and about. this blend is one of those "little black dress/favorite jeans" perfumes that has me smelling elegant in any situation from fancy to casual. prob my favorite bpal licorice perfume. thank you, labbies!

[No additional description provided.] In the bottle and while it's wet, Pomegranate Grove: Morocco smells like Kool-Aid spiked with mulling spices. When it dries the spices come out more, but it's faint. I don't get Morocco from it at all yet, but maybe that will emerge with age. The pomegranate isn't as strong as it is in Persephone, which is the most similar scent I own. It doesn't make me think of Halloween specifically, but it's a scent to wear when I'm tired of being hot and just want autumn to get here already. In other words, it's appropriate for October in North Carolina. My skin eats this right up, so I'd have to slather and keep reapplying if I wanted to smell it at all by lunchtime. I applied it on my throat, on the sides of my neck, on the inner and outer wrists, and in the crooks of my elbows. An hour and a half after applying, I had to lift my wrists to my nose and huff. Now, in the late afternoon, there's a ghost of the pomegranate remaining on the back of my left wrist and it's gone from everywhere else. It might have more throw and staying power in my scent locket. It's certainly pleasant, but not something I'll need more of after I finish this bottle.

A. Ducote Sweet vetiver, bourbon vanilla, and wool. This is the beautiful vanilla blend that I've been looking for all along, like a softer cousin to The Antikythera Mechanism and Tombstone. It's simple, like most of my favorites, and easy to wear. The sweet vetiver blends gorgeously with the bourbon vanilla and wool. It makes me think of a perfect autumn day somewhere in a cool climate, when the skies are a rich blue that contrasts with the orange leaves. I think it will be glorious and long-lasting in a scent locket too.

[No additional description provided.] Mercy! I'm the first to review a Dorian scent?! This just arrived this morning, so I haven't given it time to settle yet. But I couldn't wait to try it and review it, because I love Dorian and I love pomegranates. Unrested, this is very much the tea-and-vanilla Dorian we love with a very red, very sweet pomegranate blanketing it. As it dries down, I get more of the vanilla and tea. Wonderful take on the blend, and while I think Frostbitten Dorian will always be my favorite Dorian of all, this is a close second. I'll update when it's had time to settle.
