The Bear Prince

Recommended Posts

Shaggy fur, snow-flecked and rose-touched.

Bear Prince is a much gentler scent than I expected. I haven’t tried Rose Red or Snow White (I know, I know) but my initial impression was similar to the Marchen scent The Rose, which is a realistic, non-heady rose on me. I didn’t get a lot of snow, but as it developed the rose mingled with a soft warm musk. Very pleasant but my skin ate it up fairly quickly.

There's some other bpal scent this reminds me of though I don't know what (helping..).

On me this is a wet, soaked rose (...or just rose-sap lol), with greeny rose undertones, harsh white musk and indeed something that reminds me of fur or fabric. It's quite soft, but not as "warm" as I'd expected. Nice!

For a few seconds this is a BIG ROSE on me and then I get a ton of mint! I am assuming that is the snow note. The mint comes in a big chilly blast and then calms down but I still end up with kind of a minty rose.

2019 version

Wet, it's soft and fuzzy. When it's almost dry, it has a short powdery rose phase that reminds me of the smell of lipstick or something, then it becomes all rose. At some point, I start getting a bit of mint - it doesn't smell minty so much as I get a tingly, cool feeling in my nose when I sniff where I applied it.

2020 version:

I always tell myself not to buy any more rose fragrances unless they are really unique. I love rose and it is one of my favorite notes ever, but I have so many already! I always inevitably break this guideline and add more and more roses to my collection. Scents like Bear Prince remind me why.

This is gorgeous. And even if you do have many roses like I do, this is truly unique amongst them. It's such a cozy, comforting, fuzzy, fluffy rose. I get a lot of mint from this as well. I never thought rose and mint would go so well together, but they do!! This is truly stunning. When I wear this, I picture being wrapped up in the fluffiest blanket that smells like roses on a cold winter day, protected by the warmth inside my blanket cocoon.

If there was a fragrance version of being wrapped up in a blanket by the fireplace drinking hot chocolate on a cold winter's day, this would be it. Not because it actually smells like those things --- there's no cocoa or woodsmoke or anything like that here at all! But it gives the same feeling of coziness, of comfort, of warmth.

This is the fluffiest rose and I'm happy to have it in my collection. It's very gentle, with light throw. I imagine I'll be using it as a bedtime scent very often because of the comfy factor and its lightness.

The only downside to me is that it's short lived. Still, perfect for bedtime.

I have had such limited luck with rose scents that I skipped Bear Prince the previous times it was released. This year I have been in a "rose mood" and after Rose Quartz Bedroom was such a hit, I decided to try a partial bottle of 2020/21 Bear Prince. I am so glad that I did! This is another lovely soft, gentle, sweet rose on me, with just a hint of winter's chill. The fur keeps it warm enough that it doesn't give me sinus pain the way that Snow White does. I am so happy to have my partial bottle, and have added another to my wishlist if I can afford it before they come down. Lovely scent!

I was really hoping to love this one! 😣

When wet, freshly applied, I got a needle-sharp note, that was almost citrusy. While I got a great rose note from it, the sharp note just kept giving me the start of a headache every time I smelled it. I assume that note is the snow-note.

I did put it on immediately before bed last night; as it dried, the sharpness did kind of die down a little, but it did linger for a long time. It wasn't until I woke up this morning and sniffed my sleeve, that I got a different scent. The rose was still there, but mostly overpowered by a sweet, very powdery note. It's still just a little too dry, and a litle too heady for me to fully enjoy it 😔

This review is for the 2020 Winter release.

Starts of heavily rose with some snow. The fur note is here a little bit in the background, but on me it stays a snowy rose. I've heard that this year's Bear Prince is heavier on the rose note than previous releases, but I have not tried older versions to compare them. Just something to keep in mind if you are interested in this but don't want a super heavy rose scent, you may want to keep an eye out for previous years.

I do like this, but it wasn't as heavy on the fur note as I would have liked. Maybe that'll change with age, so I'll keep the decant around. Of the three 2020 Winter releases I have tried today, this is my least favorite.

In the imp I get a warm, fuzzy brown musk with a chilly note surrounding it. If I sniff deeply I get a bit of that rose sap from Rose Red. I already see why it has gotten so much love. I get more of that chilly snow on my skin (Not minty, but not the pine-y snow either. Just cold. How does Beth do it?) It's sort of fluffy and the fuzziness of the musk amplifies it. It's a strange scent experience both cold and warm. I do just get a bit of rose hanging about, can't quite pin the type but I want to say red.

2020 version

This is the same wet rose of Rose Red, but mintier. It doesn't have the greenness of RR, but it's still almost as loud. I don't get the furry musk until the dry down, but I agree with other reviews that the fur element seems to have coconut. This is a youthful and vibrant rose, definitely glad I picked this up.

2020 style!

Wet: Roses and snow. Sweeter than expected! Not getting much of a "fur" vibe just yet - it smells like a freshly cut rose laying in a pile of snow.

Dry: Hm.... sweet, rose-scented baby powder and fur.

.. at least the fur finally showed up? (If rose tends to work well on you, take this review with a grain of salt.)

In the slonk, I get cold, slightly rose touched fur, like the bear prince in question rolled around in a snow-covered rose bush.  It's similar on my skin at first, but the rose gets stronger and stronger the longer it stays on my skin.  It's a very pretty rose scent, though, so that's all good.  After a while, it settles into a cold, musky rose with just the slightest hint of fur.  It's like smelling the bear slowly transforming into an elegant prince.  Not sure if I'll go for a full-sized bottle as I only need so many rose-focused scents, but this really is very lovely.  Maybe I'll get a bottle next year if I use all this up.  This is a very nice scent, and I'm not even that big a rose fan (though I do like it in certain scents, like this one)

2021 Version.

The fur is definitely the most prominent aspect for me the whole time, it's warm and musky and a little sweet. I find it hard to describe but my husband says it smells it smells exactly like Cinnamon Toast Crunch. I disagree but can also sort of see where he's coming from? I feel like I get an almond note in the fur. The snow is light and chilly and burns off of me within about a half hour, leaving a light rose haze on the fur.

I’ve been eyeing this one and I was lucky to scoop up a decant because I was very close to blind bottling and I think I would have been disappointed. Rose is usually a slam dunk but this one is tricky…

in the bottle dewy roses, very promising.

wet is very juicy roses, fresh cut from the garden. it’s a green sort of rose smell that makes me think of pink roses over red. I haven’t smelled the lab’s snow note before but this is coming across to me as sweet vanilla and powdery. i was hoping for more of a minty snow though… pleasant but i want the mint! Or even coconut snow but I’m not getting that either, just sweet. hmm, i wonder if what i’m perceiving as powder is actually fur…

dry fresh out of the mail was awful. I understand why people don’t like rose now. it went straight to rose soap and something that made me think of cat pee and sweat (ugh, tends to neutralize my funk so maybe that's why? no idea about the cat pee). dry day two is much more powdery/snowy than roses and I'm not sure if I'm into it.

I don’t hate this but it’s definitely not what I wanted. I'm not sure why I thought this would be more gourmand-y but to me it’s firmly in the clean laundry perfume camp.  I also think my skin is eating all the rose and that’s why it smells so clean to me. I'm getting mostly snow and fur/musk and the little bit of rose I do get is the gentle rose scent you find in skin care and cleaning products (I would totally buy this as laundry detergent… hmm maybe an atmos spray would be nice?). this is the cleanest bear ever and I think I was expecting something a bit dirtier.

*side note: I am on my period so I think that may be affecting things, especially since my skin loves rose so much. i’ll test again in 2 weeks and see if anything changes. I'm glad to have finally tried this! I love the name and the imagery and I think it will be lovely around the holidays. I want every blanket I'm snuggling to smell like this.

I’m getting a combination of the lab’s slushy-sweet note, mixed with warm animal musk.  It’s like Snow White + nuzzling in fur.  No rose at all for me, oddly! The whole slush thing is hit-or-miss on me and here it’s veering toward too sweet, and sour from the musk, not a good combo for my particular skin chemistry.

Am I the only one who gets a cinnamon note in this one? It's probably part of the fur note. The first time I was wearing this I made a note that it's a sweet rose, but the sweetness is cinnamon, I realize now. I get a little mint, for the snow note I guess. But since I realized I smell cinnamon in this it's stronger than the rose!
