2012 Winter Solstice Swap Q&A

Newer questions towards the top!   11/15/12   24. Do you have a favorite animal (or breed of animal)?   The noble tree kangaroo! Also pygmy shrews. Also guinea pigs. And wrens are really special to me.   25. Do you like stuffed toys/animals?   Sorta! Okay, let me explain. I love stuffed animals, but I'm pretty much at capacity for them unless they're really special. Beanie babies = probably not something I need more of in my life. (My kid would steal them anyway.) A stuffed animal you made = omg awesome. Something unusual that you think I'd love = probably cool too.   26. Would you like/want anything Disney-related, or from Disneyland?   Can't think of anything! I like older Disney animated movies but that's pretty much it.   27. How do people feel about puzzles? Board games? Any particular ones that you might like or have and would like additions to?   I'm crazy for crossword puzzles, but that's about it. I like board games but rarely play then.   28. Is there anything under $10 that you've been wanting from World Market?   Not that I can think of! Though I fucking love Hob Nobs (oaty biscuits!!) and pretty much never say no to them.   29. If you answered yes to any beverage-related questions, what exactly do you like in tea, coffee, alcohol, cocoa, cider, etc.?   Did we already have a question about this? Um... hm. My general food answer is that I like pretty much everything that's vegan. It's true for drinks too. For tea, I mostly drink chais these days (but I like black, and green, and herbal, and roiboos), there is no coffee I don't like (I'm not super into flavored, and I will generally pick a dark roast over a light one), I like most booze (particularly fond of red wine and gin (not together of course), love craft beers, pretty much anything unusual or small batch gives me grabby hands), cocoa (if it's vegan I like it; I'm a bit disappointed by the Theo brand one), cider (hot and spicy).   29. Stones? What color/types of stones, precious, semi precious or otherwise do you like?   I like shinies! Amethyst is a favorite, and garnet, and labradorite, and agate. Shiny glass is okay too.   30. Anything small you need?   Small size or small price? I'd love a bottle of nail polish (see: sparkly!). Or a ball of rubber bands. Or plain black metal hair clips.   31. Would you like a scarf, or knitted dishclothes? If so, what colors?   Sure! For dishcloths, color doesn't matter, though not white because I will stain it instantly. I love dishcloths though; we don't use paper towels so new cloth ones are always welcome.   For scarves, I generally go towards darker colors (charcoal grey! dark brown! etc!) but anything other than rainbow multi-colored (I don't have the panache!), or bright orange or bright yellow or bright pink, I'm into it. Red, blue, green, dark orange, it's all good! Sparkly yarn okay too.     11/12/12   14. Socks? short? long? fuzzy?   sure! Handknit socks are sort of my dream gift right now, but storebought socks are okay too! I don't like velour or weird stuff like that... no novelty stuff or stuff that's too bumpy. Cotton or wool would be ideal. I've loved some of the socks I've gotten from SockDreams over the years but in general they tend to carry socks that are pretty thin and (this is awful to admit), my terrifying toe chitin tends to destroy them quickly.   15. Jewelry? Pierced Ears? Do you like necklaces/pendants? Bracelets? Rings?   I don't have pierced ears. I like necklaces, pendants, bracelets and rings though! My wrists are smallish, my neck is smallish, my fingers are sort of fat. I can give you more specific sizes if you need them.   16. Anything you're particularly wanting from the Lab/Post at the moment? How about GCs you keep meaning to get but never get around to?   I want all the Yules. What I really, really want are Yules from 2 years ago. (Nutcracker stuff.) Life got in the way and I missed all of those and have been mourning it ever since.   17. Do you have any fandoms?   Doctor Who, and Lovecraft! I love all things related to either, but I'm not socially part of any fandoms. (Know what I mean?)   18. Does anything from Two Timing Tart interest you?   I don't really like scented candles!   19. Does anything from Sock Dreams interest you?   See above re: socks. What I would love from Sock Dreams is another pair of the EG Smith space-dyed tights. I got a pair in a clothing swap and loved them so much that I bought another pair from there a few years ago... muy expensivo but so warm and so beautiful. It looks like they're out of stock right now though (maybe forever?).   20. Any movies (holiday or otherwise) that you want to see but never get around to?   I'm terrible about remembering movies. Nothing's coming to mind!   21. Do you need any smartphone accessories (case, skin, etc)?   Not really! I have an iPhone 4 and while I can't think of anything I really need for it, you're welcome to send something if you have a good idea! I have a bumper thingy on it currently but am not married to it.   22. Small samples of homemade booze?   YES PLEASE.   23. Is there anything from local farmer markets that would interest you?   I love food and I love local shit and I would love if you would send me local foods! Anything mailable and vegan works for me... nuts or jams or sauerkraut or whatever.   -------------------------------------- Where can I find your Q&A? Do you have a wishlist post/blog and does it link other things like Etsy/Amazon?   All links in my sig!   If you were to come into an unexpected windfall (a huge amount of cash), what would you get for yourself?   A nice hair cut and a trip somewhere I've never been before. And probably a shit ton of nice soap, heh.   Do you prefer votives, tarts, tapers or jar candles (if you are into candles)?   I don't really do candles (see: small people running full tilt around my house at all times). I also don't really like scented candles. (Isn't that weird? I don't like my house to smell like anything but a house.)   Any books you've been meaning to get for yourself but haven't yet?   There are some things on my Amazon wishlist! My husband and I have pretty similar taste in books (mostly SF with occasional jaunts into fantasy etc), and he tends to buy books he wants as soon as they come out. So most of my wishlist is stuff that only I like (vegan cookbooks, memoirs... I love memoirs) or that I want but am not desperate for.   Right now I *really* want a copy of Vegan Eats World by Terry Hope Romero... not sure that's on my Amazon list yet.   Would you want something included for your pets? If so, is there anything they really like?   Ianto, my guinea pig, isn't really into toys or guinea pig treats or anything. Such things do exist but he could care less!   Is there any Bath etailer that you want to try? That you love? What do you want from there? What's your favorite bath item?   Oy. I love all things bath related and pretty much want to try ALL THE RETAILERS. You can never go wrong sending me fancy soap, even if it's from someone I've never heard of before. As for people I have heard of, I loooooooooove Paintbox Soapworks and pretty much anything new that shows up there, I instantly want.   Tea? Cider? Others?   I'm mostly a coffee drinker these days. I like tea, I just don't have time for it! Hot cider is great but I rarely drink it.   Recipes/Soup in a Jar?   Sure! I cook all the time and am always happy for new recipes. Soup in a jar would probably sit in my cabinet for a long time and then one day I'd be near starving to death and be like HEY GUYS LOOK SOME SOUP and get really excited.   Fiber Allergies?   Nope!   I will note though: I don't do silk generally. "Tussah" or "peace" silk is okay with me, but plain ol' mulberry silk squicks me out.   Likewise, anything else you have to kill the animal for (like bison fiber, sadly) doesn't appeal.   Colors You Like/Dislike?   For wearing: dark colors, but not necessarily black. Charcoal grey is probably my super favorite. Also browns. Red is my favorite color overall but I don't wear it a ton. (I like it, just don't seem to buy it much.)   I don't love pastels in general and I don't usually care for yellow. Otherwise, I am pretty easy to please.   Oh, and anything white quickly turns another color in my possession, so, yeah.   Sweet Solstice Sister, what color of nail polish would brighten your senses or make you smile? Glitter or no?   Glitter! Glitter! Glitterrrrrrr! Um, if it's sparkly, I like it. I have a 3 year old's taste in nail polish.   The one color of nail polish that I actively dislike is blue. A light sort of ice blue might be okay but mostly blue isn't my thing for polish.

From: O

In the imp: YO, cherry cough syrup. But exactly. I am a little terrified.   Wet: Not cherry cough syrup, thank God. Almost immediately musky, on my skin. A little vanilla, not a lot of honey. Husband says it smells "sexy" and "like cherry incense" (WTF). I'm guessing the vanilla + honey is making him think of a darkly sweet cherry, and the amber is the resinous incense-like note. A sweet but definitely not flowery smell, pretty musky and dark on me.   Drydown: I spilled TWO THIRDS of a NEW bottle all over so for a while it was impossible for me to smell the perfume itself! Still musky, a bit sweeter, but more vanilla, less honey. Usually honey works well on me (I love Athens) so not sure what is happening here, unless I'm amping the hell out of the amber. This blended really well, and was a very pretty scent. It didn't seem to morph and I couldn't pick out the individual notes much. Not at all a foody scent, which works for me because I really don't like those much.   Hours later: More musky, maybe a faint powdery scent from the amber, no honey. I don't think the honey ever really came out on me, unless it was very very subtle. Not much throw from the start, but a fair amount of staying power.   The verdict: Definitely a sexy scent. I wouldn't want to wear it on a job interview -- maybe a serious date, or on a sexy afternoon. It's nice, but it doesn't really wow me like Athens or Bathsheba (two all-time favourites). Then again....given the way my husband reacted, maybe I'll replace my spilled bottle! Or, since this is related to Snake Oil, I might try that again (it's been quite a while) to see if I can get that heavier sweeter scent I thought O would be.   Source: O

Winter Solstice Help!

if you were to come into an unexpected windfall (a huge amount of cash), what would you get for yourself? Not a house or paying off credit cards kind of thing, but something special just for you? Poppets! And some of those one of a kind poppets! And a glass buffet thingy, to fill with awesome teapots! And more awesome teapots!   Do you prefer votives, tarts, tapers or jar candles (if you are into candles)? No tarts, and I don't use tapers much. I like votives, and jars and pillars!   Are there any things that you used to love to have for your holidays/this time of year that you can't get where you are now? Not that I can think of...but I did have the chance to try some awesome German marzipan stuff that was coated in chocolate, more of that would be fun.   Where can I find your Q&A? Do you have a wishlist post/blog and does it link other things like Etsy/Amazon? Yes! If you look at old blog posts, there's a few from other swaps, I think most of them have links to kaboodle and my wishlist is linked in my signature.   Yules I am going to be bad and order a bunch of decants.   Any books you've been meaning to get for yourself but haven't yet? Yes please! See my kaboodle!   Would you want something included for your pets? If so, is there anything they really like? My fishy would like a bag of live goldfish to eat, but I don't think that would travel well.   Is there any Bath etailer that you want to try? That you love? What do you want from there? What's your favorite bath item? Yes please! I like any bath items that aren't really floral!   Tea? I know there was a favorite foods ...but what about drinks? Hot Tea? Hot Cider? other hot beverages? what about perhaps one of those soups in a jar mix? Yes, yes, yes, yes! All of them!   Do you have any fiber allergies? Wool, even the nice soft fancy stuff, gives me a rash.   What colors do you like? (Pictures would be helpful!) Colors! I'm a minority in that I love pinks (not the really pastel though), and oranges.   What colors do you not like? I like colors!   sweet Solstice Sister, what color of nail polish would brighten your senses or make you smile? Glitter or no? Yes! So far, I have a pink metallic, a clear with various sizes of pink glitters, and a blue-grey metallic. And a top/bottom coat. I saw OPI has some james bond colors now. Mr Boy would get a kick out of me wearing some of them. (I think I saw a pack of mini-sizes in my Ulta flyer.) More glitter=more funner! I would like to try one of those shatter polishes too. (note: I don't need them to be opi, or anything fancy, cheap $1 nailpolishes make me happy too. They're usually destroyed after a couple of hours at work, so its not like they last longer if I get the fancy ones.)   Socks? short? long? fuzzy? I am of the festively plump size. So, longer ones have to be bigger around. other than that, and wool making me itchy, I like them all!   Jewelry? Pierced Ears? Do you like necklaces/pendants? Bracelets? Rings? Yes please! I have pierced ears, and no metal allergies. Necklaces/pendants are good, no chokers/smaller lengths, since my neck is festive too! I destroy bracelets and only wear my wedding/engagement rings.   Anything you're particularly wanting from the Lab/Post at the moment? How about GCs you keep meaning to get but never get around to? Umm...more hair glossing oil! Lucyboo gave me her decant of the snake oil one and its fabulous! I'd like more decants or bits of them, partial bottles would be nice too. (I wouldn't object to a whole bottle of one of them either.) My hair is amazing when I use it! Lets see, for other stuff, I'll probably hunt down the Weenies that I want bottles of, and I have decants coming of the Yules that I want to try. I'm a bad girl that way. See my wishlist for other wants!   Do you have any fandoms? Not really. Maybe the firefly stuff, I've been wanting to see the comic books.   Does anything from Two Timing Tart interest you? I'm sure it does!   Does anything from Sock Dreams interest you? Most likely! As long as they fit!   Any movies (holiday or otherwise) that you want to see but never get around to? I need a copy of Christmas vacation on dvd, my vhs is starting to not work in a few places.   Do you need any smartphone accessories (case, skin, etc)? My phone is smarter than me, but still a dumb phone.   Small samples of homemade booze? Sure! However, I have issues with wines and migranes. I hear from my auntie who makes wine, that homemade wine might not bother me, because it doesn't have all the preservatives and sulfates in it. I'm still a little scared of wines though.   Is there anything from local farmer markets that would interest you? Yes please! With the exception of vinegars! They are icky!   Do you have a favorite animal (or breed of animal)? No favorites!   Do you like stuffed toys/animals? Sure, but I like little wooden animals better if they're easily found! Small stuffies would be more fun! Even tiny, then they could ride in my wooden semi truck toy!   Would you like/want anything Disney-related, or from Disneyland? Sure, I think Alice in Wonderland and Jungle book are probably my favorites!   Another question! How do people feel about puzzles? Board games? Any particular ones that you might like or have and would like additions to? Yes to puzzles! Board games are trickier, we have a lot of them and keep getting more!   Is there anything under $10 that you've been wanting from World Market? I'm sure there is! I'm a big fan of any sort of special treat or snack! Neat (or horrible) Ornaments or decorations will be met with glee!   If you answered yes to any beverage-related questions, what exactly do you like in tea, coffee, alcohol, cocoa, cider, etc.? Yes! I'm not big on roobios (though the ones at teavanna were tasty), jasmine/florals are usually a little icky. I like everything else!   Stones? What color/types of stones, precious, semi precious or otherwise do you like? I'm a big fan of any jaspers or agates. I like the blister pearls too. In terms of faceted-type stones, citrines and garnets are really nice! Anything with colors is welcome! ANd anything that is pretty! YAY!   Any small things you need? If you would like to get me some pretty address labels, that would be fun! I print up plain little black and white ones on my computer.   Question of my own; I like to knit. Would you like a scarf, or knitted dishclothes? If so, what colors? Yes. Just no wool on the scarf please, I get a little rashy from it.   Plants: It is winter here, and I have no yard of my own, so probably not. I don't think a houseplant would survive the sit out by the mailbox, even if it lived through the journey.   Baked goods! Would you like some, and if so, any allergies/intolerances I should know about? I am Team Eat All Things! That includes candies and all nommy stuff. I'm not big on vinegars, olive or licorice, but if you already got them, please send them. Mr. Boy likes some of them, and I can always find a new home for something I don't love to gobble.   Books, fuzzy posters, Coloring, etc.? If they are are small and easy to finish quickly, then yes. I've gotten those big tube coloring things a few times, and always throw them away before I finish them.

Nightmare Before Christmas swap Q&A

favorite candles, companies and/or candle scents? I used to sell PartyLite and I still really like the Colonial Candles of Cape Cod. They burn sooo nicely and all the way down to a nub. Their votives rock because they liquify completely and when they're done, I just have to take out the little metal wick holder and wipe it out. No scraping out wax or headaches.   I also really love Big Dipper Waxworks, they have some AMAZING scents in their pure beeswax candles.   REALLY like the Midsummers Night and Witches Brew Yankee candles. I'd love some of the Witches Brew car jars or a big pillar or jar candle.   I have some candles on my etsy wish list but I don't really know what quality they are. I'm willing to try them!!   I'm also a chandler so I do pour my own candles once in a while when I have time.   I prefer votives, jar, or pillar candles. No dinner candles or tealights please; I'm stocked up on those!!   I'm pretty much a general candle whore and will accept most top shelf type candles. Don't really want any dollar or grocery store type candles, I'm sorry that I'm such a picky biotch.   I love patchouli, rose, vanilla, sandalwood, amber, resins, clove, cardamom, pine/spruce, lavender, leather, honey... In candles I don't mind fruit - spiced plum, cranberry, peach, strawberry, etc.   favorite kinds of tea (flavors, companies) My amazon edibles wishlist has my favorite tea companies/blends on it.   I would LOVE LOVE LOVE tea from mariagefreres.com - especially the butterscotch. It's like crack! It smells just like Lush's butterball bath bombs, srsly.   I could use another ingenuitea and wouldn't be adverse to trying the teavana tea maker of the same type so I could compare.   My tea company here in Seattle that sold Dammann Frères tea closed, but their tea is scrumptious too.   In general, I love loose leaf flavored black tea. No rooibos please. Sometimes I like a good flavored green (like coconut pouchong) but in general I drink black. I like flavors like vanilla, butterscotch, caramel, chocolate, chocolate orange, chocolate raspberry, rose, maple pancake, pumpkin spice, etc. I also like smoky tea like a good Russian Caravan or Lapsong Souchong.   I'd love to try tea from new places! I'm not a huge fan of either teavana (because of their hard sales techniques in stores) or adiago but my mind is easily changed by fabulousness.   any of the Villainess autumn or winter soaps appeal? Another soap company you'd like more? I actually do not want bar soap. Please do not send me any. I'm a soaper and I have WAY too much bar soap.   Liquid hand soap? Sure! Whipped, smooch or smack? Bring it on!   I need to go check out the Paintbox Soapworks yule update but I do have many things of this variety already in my etsy and amazon wishlists. I have a wishlist at SoapBox Company too. See my SW Help link.   Any of the bpal Halloween scents you wished you'd gotten? Any Yule scents you're hoping to see come back? I'm good with weenies; I run decant circles so I have pretty much everything. As far as yules, I did get to sniff protos at Will Call and I always look forward to Snow White. I'm really looking forward to the new Coraline bottles and any new Yules. Especially BPTP atmosphere sprays!   Do you have a general swap-related help post somewhere? Yes, I have links in my signature. SW Help has links to thinkgeek, soapbox co, etsy, amazon, the loopy ewe, etc. There is also a link to my bpal wishlist, the SW Q&A, and another link to the Switch Witch Spreadsheet which has links to facebook, twitter, pinterest, last.fm, pandora, etc. etc.   Do you have Etsy/Amazon wishlists linked somewhere? see question above.   Do you have a Tumblr/Pinterest you'd share with everyone (these can be really informative as to style?) see question above the question above.   Do you like knitted items? I am a knitter! Of course I like knitted items. I really don't like scarves or triangular shawls though. I do love wraps and long skinny shawlettes, wrist warmers, socks, etc. I'm an MCN (Merino Cashmere Nylon), MCS (Merino Cashmere Silk), and Merino Silk fan. I will say that I am a fiber snob and I mostly purchase indy yarn. But I'm ok with high quality LYS yarn too; I do have a lot of Malabrigo because it's such a buttery soft wool. I'll do Cascade 220 for felting or hats, but nothing that will touch my skin please. Please no yarn from Michaels or Jo-Anns (except things like cotton for washcloths!)   Words, Numbers or Spatial manipulation? video games including any of the above.     I'm in Japan, anything that would interest you from there? Sure! I have a green tea kit kat already (NOM NOM NOM) but I wouldn't say no to MOAR. I used to do a ton of origami and wouldn't be adverse to paper, but honestly I live really close to huge awesome asian supermarkets with excellent book & paper stores attached as well as dishes and cookware. They have a very large selection of origami paper and many times they'll have the imported kit kats and other goodies. I've never seen Green Tea ones there though, so I'm very thankful to have gotten to try one. I'm also pale and would be very interested in super pale foundation. I've never been to Japan so I don't know what to ask for.   Your package must contain "-A 'Sugar Plum' (ie a sweet treat)." With that in mind, what are some of your favorite sweet treats?   I am definitely a food and chocolate snob most of the time. I mostly shop at Whole Paycheck..er..Foods, co-ops, or snobby grocery stores, so there you go.   My amazon list (edibles section, my wishlist is all broken up into categories) has quite a few things I like on it.   I love clove flavored hard candy (drops or sticks.)   As far as chocolate bars go, I don't like white chocolate and I don't like plain chocolate (dark or milk.) Chocolate should contain almonds, curry, dried fruit (berries/raisins), crystallized ginger & chai spices, salt, toffee…   I love imported Cadbury Crunchies, Curly Wurly, Fruit & Nut bars. (there is a company that makes/distributes Cadbury in the states, but it is NOT the same. Imported only please! I used to make a semi-regular pilgramage to World Market for these but for some reason World Market no longer imports them. Sad face.   Dolfin bars are excellent, I really love their jasmine, green tea, earl grey, lavender, rose, hot masala, etc. Vosges Naga bar is wonderful. I like the Rittersport milk or dark with whole hazelnuts or almonds. I love Milka chocolate in Alpine milk (IKR? It's plain and I'll eat it!) or with hazelnuts.   I love clove, cardamom, rose, and lavender flavored things. Anise is yummy too but I'm not a fan of "black licorice" candy per se. Anise fudge though? Yum.   Honey? Om nom nom. I love love love honey. My mom is close to an apiary and we buy their honey by the 1-5 gallon buckets. (I actually had honeybees for a while but they were wild and moved out. pout. I still have all of my beekeeping equipment and hive; I just need to buy some bees. And have time to plant a bunch of good pollen producers for honey!)   Any sweets you don't like?:   I really try to avoid corn syrup. I don't like Hersheys or Nestle or most of the common "grocery/drug store" low end chocolate or chocolate candy, sorry. (well, Seattle is pretty sophisticated and sells high end chocolate along with low in the grocery stores, so YMMV.)   Do you have an eReader, and if so, which kind? Would you be interested in eBooks, and if so, how about a list of your favorite authors/books?   I don't have an actual eReader specifically but I use the kindle app on my ipad and iphone. I can also use ibooks, play books, etc. I think the formats are the most important - I can use .pdf, .mobi, .epub, and .prc.   I have never ever purchased ebooks. There are SO MANY free ones! I actually prefer a hard copy (I have quite a huge book collection with many hard back first edition signed books.) Used books are fine, though! And I would love to read Meilin's books.   I really wish that when you purchased the hard copy of a book that you had the option to get the digital book for free; like they do with Blu-Ray. Half the time you get the dvd AND digital copy too. Stupid book companies and their proprietary formats! It's like the war of VHS/BETA revisted... AGAIN.   Anyway, that is why I don't purchase them. Plus it's just not as comfortable to hold my ipad; the edges dig in and hurt my hands since I have the heavier first gen. I have no plans to get a kindle or other ereader.   I just discovered a new (to me) candle company, Witch City Wicks. Does anything you see there tempt you? See my etsy wish list. Yeah, their plain jars are not super inspiring but I'm sure I can soak the labels off if necessary and wrap with a gothy ribbon or something.   What about desires (limited edition or not) from Black Phoenix Trading Post? Any BPTP wish list items are either in my "wishing" wish list, my scentbase wishlist, or my etsy wishlist (or all three.)

Nightmare Before Christmas Swap

Do you have Etsy/Amazon wishlists linked somewhere? All of my wishlists are here: http://amzn.com/w/3F0132MYIB7XS   Do you have a Tumblr/Pinterest you'd share with everyone (these can be really informative as to style?) http://pinterest.com/msfortuneteller/     favorite candles, companies and/or candle scents? I really like cinnamon and pomander ball type scents for the winter.   favorite kinds of tea (flavors, companies) I like just about any type of tea except berry flavored teas generally. I especially like mint, chocolate, and chai flavored teas. I love teavana, but my favorite tea place is a local one called Discover Tea.   any of the Villainess autumn or winter soaps appeal? Another soap company you'd like more? I don't really need soaps, but anything moisturizing that I can use in the shower would be good. I like Villainess, but especially Cocoa Pink.   Any of the bpal Halloween scents you wished you'd gotten? Any Yule scents you're hoping to see come back? Looking forward to Lick It coming back (I have every year so far).     Sweets? I love dark chocolate and candy canes. Also, Pixi Stix which I can't seem to find anymore.     Paintbox Soaps?I've never tried anything from Paintbox Soaps (I don't think?), but these sugar scrubs sound nice: The Queen is Dead, Heima (oh, the mints ), This Charming Man, and Blackbird. I would also love to try any of those in the sample 2oz size of the hand cream.     I just discovered a new (to me) candle company, Witch City Wicks. Does anything you see there tempt you? The Holy Ground candle tin sounds good.   What about desires (limited edition or not) from Black Phoenix Trading Post? Any of the elemental massage oils, but especially Ignis. I've been wanting to try that for a looong time.   Ereader? I have a kindle, but I have a ton of books on it atm (like 200+).   How do you feel about other perfume etailers? Any you love, hate, are dying to try? How about perfume with alcohol in – do you love all perfumes, do you dislike commercial brands but not mind the inclusion of alcohol if it's a boutiquey or fancy company with unique scents, or are you strictly oils? I am a perfume ho so I like to spread the love. I'm also ok with alcohol as long as it doesn't smell like generic perfume. For instance, I really love the Jennifer Aniston perfume (don't laugh). I also like the Demeter perfumes (have some on my wishlist).     Other than fragrance oils/perfumes what is your number one (or a tie between 2-3) favorite type of toiletry or scenty item? I love the Glissade from Cocoa Pink (would love some in the Green Apple scent). Also, scented body oils.   Pirates or ninjas? Pirates all the way!   Zombies – love, hate, obsessed, don't care, think they're coming for us any day now, other immediate/passionate thoughts? Love zombies! Zombie movies, shows, yarn, you name it.   Bpal oils: Mme Moriarty (I regret selling mine ) and Badgers (go ahead and laugh).   Disney Villain? Not a big Disney person, but probably Malificent and the Shadow Man.   Ok, in addition to my question about the hand dyed things, particularly scarves (thanks for answering that btw, everyone who did....I wonder if it gives things away too much to say my swapper did not answer that question though?), I have another: I love dyed stuff. Maybe deep purples & greys or black.   Are there any Yule type scents you like or don't like? Like do you generally avoid fir or evergreen scents? Or only like them in some things? Or in do you love candy cane scents? Etc. Tree scents are fine for room scents, but generally not something I wear perfume wise, where candy cane scents I like in perfumes, lotions, etc but not as a room scents. Tree, pine, wreath scents= room Candy cane & sweeter type scents= body Spicy scents= either Smokey scents= body   Also, would you be interested in made just for you products like hand cream or salves, or.....? (I have just finished taking an herbalism class and am on a roll with making herbal things....) Sure! Probably a hand cream/balm.   Favorite Yules? Lick It's and Rose Red.     What would make you smile the most? Tough question. I really love shiny stuff, so jewelry is always a hit (I have stuff on my wishlist, but it's pricier). Maybe a gift cert. to Elements Artifacts (even a small one that I can put towards something I want). I also love receiving yarn because as I knit w/it and then wear the item it's a wonderful reminder of the swap and the giver. But really just anything that the giver thought screamed me I would love and cherish.   Do you have a Holy Grail BPAL? Something you long for but think you will never see? Badgers (please stop laughing, seriously).     Would I like to share my Nightmare Before Christmas Swap loot with my Spouse/Kids/Pets? Considering I have 3 kids, a husband, and 7 pets it's not necessary. Candy though will be happily shared among the humans.   Other drink stuff besides coffee and tea?: Yes, cocoa and the husband & kids like cider.   \How do you feel about hand-crafted goodies? Love them!   Want anything from holiday food companies? No thank you.   Fandoms: Doctor Who, Star Trek, I have recently become obsessed with Firefly, and do horror movies in general count as a fandom?

NMBC Swap Questions

Do you have a general swap-related help post somewhere? My Switch Witch stuff is pretty close to a general swap help because there were sooooo many questions   Do you have Etsy/Amazon wishlists linked somewhere? https://www.etsy.com/people/rebeccafoley4/favorites?ref=si_fav http://amzn.com/w/1MPF1SEY063DM   Do you have a Tumblr/Pinterest you'd share with everyone (these can be really informative as to style?) http://pinterest.com/rbecksf/     favorite candles, companies and/or candle scents? I like foodie scents, fruity scents, some wood or plant like aspects, pretty much any kind of scent except florals.   favorite kinds of tea (flavors, companies) I love tea! I'm generally a green tea with fruit kind of girl (with the exception of pineapple of course, which they use to sweeten a lot of fruity teas I have found). David's Tea is my favourite, but I'm always willing to branch out   any of the Villainess autumn or winter soaps appeal? Another soap company you'd like more? Nothing in particular, but I wouldn't shake my head at moisturizers or scrubs.   Any of the bpal Halloween scents you wished you'd gotten? Any Yule scents you're hoping to see come back? Looking forward to Lick It coming back (I have every year so far). I was thinking about the lurid library, because I love the scent of books and old libraries in real life, but didn't want to take the plunge on a whole bottle. As for Yules, I have no idea what I would want to come back - sorry I'm kind of useless.   Do you like knitted items? If so, any fiber sensitivities/allergies? What kinds of items would you like? YES!!!! If you've seen my blog for Switch Witch you will see my love for all things knitted No sensitivities or allergies. I also have no preferences for types of knitted things I just love everything knitted   I forgot to answer my own question about words, numbers or spatial manipulation so: I like words and numbers. Spatial manipulation in real life I tend to kind of suck at, but in a video game it is a different story which makes very little sense to me.   Anything from Paintbox Soaps? I love what I received from them as part of SW (I got a sorbetto and lotion in the English Gentleman - so awesome especially layered with Dorian). I don't need anything else especially in terms of scrubs (I just received a new Haunt scrub from my SW yesterday, so I'm good on that front), but again I don't really shake my head at things that moisturize.   Your package must contain "-A 'Sugar Plum' (ie a sweet treat)." With that in mind, what are some of your favorite sweet treats? Is there anything you really don't like? I prefer dark chocolate to any other kind, preferably with salt of some sort or even caramel (like the salted caramel bar thing that is found a traders joes - I had one once and since there are no trader joes where I live I have never experienced it again ). I also have an unhealthy obsession with all things peanut butter. I it!!!! Basically if the sweets play with either salty or spicy (jalepeno caramels anyone? ) I am there. Poke me if you need further clarification   E-reader? No e-reader here - because I prefer real books.   BPTP? Can I say everything? JK. TKO/UGH Massage Oil Hair Glosses (any of them particularly Snake Oil or the Fig one) Miss Palmer's Establishment Room Spray This question is probably better addressed in my blog posts somewhere - I'm tired and cannot comprehend the awesomeness that is BPTP right now.   Missed a question re Witch City Wicks: I mostly burn candles for ritual stuff (or my attempts at ritual stuff) and I usually tend to use tealights because I can burn them in one sitting. I also do not care about scents usually for rituals as I annoint them but different colours are always nice.   Other perfumes? I don't really know much about the perfumes from other etailers. However, alcohol based perfumes bother me most of the time usually with a headache or itchy wrists so I tend to stay away from them.   Other smelly things? I love oil sprays for moisturizing.   Pirates or ninjas? Pirates definitely, unless it is a ninja pirate then I pick that. I have to pick pirates because apparently my family hundreds of years ago in Ireland were pirates so its a family tie.   Zombies? I'm not obsessed but I kind of think that the walking dead is pretty awesome. I like plants vs. zombies and my BFF and I have had the what roles will we play in a zombie apocalypse situation before. So there's no hatred there. Shoot for the head!   Disney villain? Scar - because Jeremy irons has an awesome voice. Although Ursula also ranks up there and gaston (I can consider him a villain right?)   Is there any BPAL oil that you are dying to get your hands on? It doesn't have to be a rare, just something you really want to try? Snow White is something that I've always wanted to try, actually most things with a snow note (I've never tried a snow note before). I also wanted to try the different Christmas roses (Rose Red and Peacock Queen). Also Rogue - because leather = .   Do you want to see things in your box for your significant other/spouse/kids/fish/whatever? Or do you want to keep it allll about you? I have no significant other or kids. It's just me, my parents and the cats - if you wanted to include something for them you can, but totally not necessary. Actually with the switch witch round, my mother finally understands why I love this community so much, because it truly is a community.   We've had a lot of questions about coffee and tea - how do you feel about other things? Cocoa, spicing for ciders, flavouring to add to water is what I mean? I love hot chocolate!!!!!! I think I love it even more than I love tea. If there was hot chocolate in my package (especially peanut butter hot chocolate, if such a thing exists in a package you might hear my squee from Canada)   Would you, dear little Nightmare, like to receive something from one of those silly-yet-nostalgic Holiday food companies, like Omaha Steaks (which totally has a ton of yummy veggie items, btw!) or Swiss Colony? I've never heard of these places (maybe because I'm Canadian).   It's not Christmas/Yule/Winter Solstice/Winter until... ? December 1st is my beginning of Christmas celebrating (although working at a well known coffee chain that starts Christmas on Nov 1st kills my soul a little). Although it never truly feels like Christmas until we put up the tree and you already know about my tree nacho making tradition.   I swear there was a question about christmas/halloween movies- so here is my answer: Love Actually (I think I may have mentioned that in my questionnaire), Rocky Horror (Hallowe'en), Rudolph the Red nosed Reindeer (the one with the island of misfit toys), Charlie Brown's Christmas special, Mostly I love watching children's Christmas movies - the animated ones because they make me feel nostalgic and happy   HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT RECEIVING MOSTLY HAND CRAFTED GOODIES? I too love all things hand-crafted, I know I would make my package have more crafted things although I am woefully uncrafty in many departments.   What fandoms are you a part of???? FIREFLY!!!! But my awesome swapper already knows this (it certianly isn't hidden very well based on my Pinterest or etsy so my swapper is a great stalker) A song of fire and ice/game of thrones Harry potter Mass effect Legend of Zelda Those are probably the main ransoms I love, but really I'm just a big nerd anyway   Are you a George RR Martin fan? What about Rocky Horror Picture Show? YES!!!!! To both!   Are your ears pierced? Yes, but the only earrings I can wear without my ears swelling up seem to be the ones that you get your ears pierced with.   NEW QUESTION!!! Any flavour combinations that you hate? (sorry to be a negative nellie, I just want to make sure my swappee doesn't get something she hates) For me it's chocolate and mint, and I dislike black licorice.   Does your sense of humor lean more vanilla or rather dirty? Would you get offended if you were sent something more along the "mature" side (not talking toys or dirty pictures)? Definitely a bit dirty - I'm not the most appropriate of jokesters. I find someecards hysterical - which is awesome because my swapper has already sent two! I tend to like witty humour - sarcasm, plays on words and things like that rather than slap stick comedy.

Grandma's Kitchen

I was bragging about the new perfumes I got to my boyfriend and he asked if they had a banana nut one. He described what he thought and we both liked the description I came up with (he came up with the name)     Bodacious Banana Fairy: A clean, cozy kitchen baking a scrumptious treat. A tantalizing nutty smell dances with the sweet softness of banana bread combining into a scent with warmth and happiness.   It's fun to make these silly descriptions.

Unfortunate Hike

My boyfriend thought of this one and asked me to make the description sound prettier.   Avalanche: Cold, bitter-mint snow tumbling down a dirt cliff. A heavy feeling of dread and a tang of watery blood splattered on pine trees.   Or: A soft gentle snowfall freezing the bubbling rivers, covering the smell of the dirt mountain and its bloodstained rocks.     Hope I didn't make it too off of what he meant. Said nothing about pine trees, but I thought it'd be an interesting twist. Might not go too good with the mint though. Hmmm... Should take one of those out.   Update: He liked the second one better.

Nostalgia

Another idea(s) kept thinking of different kinds for this one and mixing them all seemed kinda blegh.   Elementary School: Crisp, white paper, pencil shavings and graphite powder. A slight hibiscus in the breeze and a warm, earthy scent.   Or instead of the flower and earthy stuff, do dry erase markers/chalk and crayon smells.   Or sharp pencil wood, dirty cement, and the smell of a playground long loved and played on.     Ahh, good days when I was small... It probably wouldn't be the best perfume, but it'd make me a bit wistful for the past. If it worked on me, I'd wear it a lot.

'Merica

Idea for a perfume.. Unless it's already made   America: A delicious apple pie coated with cinnamon wafting over the green grass of a baseball field. A sharp baseball bat wood with a hint of baseball leather in the background.   It sounds awesome to me , but I bet my body chemistry would eat up the pie before it even had a change to fully bake.

Dearest Witch....

So I've been doing good. Kind of... Sort of? I've been working my ASS off running around hauling clothes and doing all manner of bitch-work, lol. Aaaaaand I still get paid peanuts and since my roommates and I have been trying to catch up with our bills if it's not one thing, (bills, destitution) it's our freaking HOUSE BREAKING somehow. First we had no heat (house broken) then we had no power (bills/destitution) then we had a toilet in the basement (that had been unused for at LEAST a week) backup and our basement smelt of.....sewage. Not a smell anyone wants in their house. EVER. (<----house broken!)   So that's been my last couple of days in a nutshell.   But other than THAT. I've been doing a lot of cooking so I can prepare my lunch and Rebecca's (my remaining roommate) in the afternoon so we can just take them to work with us the next day. I made casserole and soup and homemade brownies will be next.   Anywho. That's my update for now!!!   xoxoxoxo Switch witch!!!!

SW Q & A

Questions and Answers for BPAL Switch Witch!   A note to my witch! Also to any Nacho witches out there!   I would love something from you to add to my journal. I have a journal that traveled and a journal that I MEANT to travel (that idea died when mom didn't take me seriously-it was supposed to be an ongoing letter...oh, well). Both have artwork from different people in them. I would just love to have something from YOU-art or no (art is in the eye of the beholder, no?) even if it is your grocery or "to-do today" list!   Do you like s'mores and s'mores-flavored things? I don't really enjoy the marshmallow/chocolate/graham cracker experience, no. Pass on this     What's the neatest freebie you've gotten? It can be cool or thoughtful or just totally unexpected, and not limited to BPALdom. I've been gifted with a lot of things over the years. I'm trying to think of the NEATEST, and everydamnedthing is jumping up and saying "Me! Oh ooh, pick me!" So, I guess you could really say that every time someone gives me something it is "the neatest"! I'm kind of corny that way, I guess. I feel really silly admitting that.   Would you enjoy receiving cute but useful items like colorful kitchen utensils/gadgets, or bento supplies? (boxes, chopsticks, accessories, etc?) What about things like spice mixes (homemade, or Penzey's for example) I have too much in my kitchen now, but I LOVE chopsticks, even if I don't really use them well. Spice mixes...sure! Put a useful recipe on that puppy and I'll probably even use it! What I really would like is a one/two person Asian one. No one in this house other than me and sometimes my 4 YO son like rice...so it only ever gets made if it is for lunch, and that's a "meh, it's ok" sort of lunch because I don't have a good source for anything more than soy sauce and teriyaki sauce. I'm not well versed in MAKING Asian dishes, but I love to eat them when I (very rarely) find a good restaurant. Make sense?   EDITED to add that apparently I need a noodle cutter. What with the inundation of eggs, mom says to make noodles with them. To use a noodle cutter. Also, a rolling pin. How can I not have a rolling pin??   Do you like cute, seasonal or fluffy PJ bottoms? Like they sell at Target, Old Navy (they have had cute Halloween ones!) If so, what size do you wear? Goodness knows I need new ones! My inner thighs rub holes in all of my pj bottoms I need something PETITE! Sized 16, so Large/XL depending on how they run. Also? A drawstring or elastic top is the most awesome. My rear needs a lot of room, so I size my pants for that (natch) but the tops will fall down if there's nothing to cinch them.   What kind of chocolate do you like? Nuts, no nuts, white, dark, etc? Milk chocolate, almonds, hazelnuts, sometimes white chocolate, but not dark!!   I live near a Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, and Penzeys! What does your little heart desire from any or all of these places? I have none of those here, so I have no idea.   Are home made foods acceptable or does the idea of eating strange mailed food disturb you? I'm cool with eating strange mailed food Just let me know what it is-spicy? Need to be reheated? Made with ants? Just let me know!   I just gave you $20 and sent you into a "has everything" store ala Walmart and told you that you have to come out having spent it all, and none of it on anything you need. What would you buy? Be as specific as possible! I'd snag a Starbucks cold vanilla frappuccino. Sock aisle for knee high SOCKS! Then I'd head back to the scrapbooking aisle and fill up the rest of my $13.50 with various papers and inks and stuff.   What kind of cuisines do you like? (I mentioned this in my ?aire but curious what my witch may like)And, what are your favorite restaurants? Asian and Italian are my top top top favorites. I love this local Italian restaurant, Chiodo's. I fell in love with "chinese" food when I was very young, but I'm very americanized in my exposure. Gan Pong (or Gang Pang) Chicken from Mark Pi's in Columbus, Indiana is my current favorite and I really miss it when I'm home in PA   I'm from Canada - is there anything specifically a witchee might like that is only available here? I wouldn't refuse maple syrup, but believe it or not, I am not a fan-it would be of greater use to hubs.   what are your "fandoms" and would you like a t-shirt from TeeFury if an appropriate one came up? I have no idea about TeeFury, I love certain stories, but have never been part of a "fandom". Color me uneducated in this area. Labyrinth, Harry Potter, Anita Blake, Meredith Gentry, The Otherworld D'Artigo sisters, Game of Thrones, the Kencyr Jame, Diana Gabaldon's "Outlander" series, the original Dragonlance stories are all favorites of mine.   Do you have an eReader and if so which one? I use the Kindle App for Android and Audible.   Do you like candles, or tart burners, or something? If so, what's your favorite scent to burn? I like candles but tea lights are the best. I use unscented if I'm burning my BPAL oils (the ones that I love that don't work on my skin). The scents that I love the most in my house are usually the Yules. I have a tart burner and hubs bought me a bunch of tarts at Christmas last year. I still have most of them PLEASE NO CINNAMON!! Ugh.   Marzipan? I'll try it, but don't send a lot-I wouldn't want it to go to waste if I don't like it :/   Would you be interested in washable/reusable muslin “paper” towels (basically muslin squares hemmed around the edge)? Maybe in some sort of box to put on your kitchen or bathroom counter? This is an interesting idea! Yes, please!   Do you drink alcohol and if so, would you be OK with your witch sending you homemade infused vodka? I don't think you can send alcohol to PA? I do drink occasionally-always sweet!   If you get me (or a fellow Aussie, if there are any playing this round) as a witch or witch's minion, would you like to try some Australian specialties, such as TimTams (delicious chocolately cookies), Caramello Koalas (koala shaped chocolates filled with gloopy caramel), Australian native spices or anything like that? Australian native spices sound intriguing! If you include a way to use them, that would be bonus points!   If your witch is a knitter, crocheter or sewer, is there a particular type of garment you would love to receive (hat, scarf, wrap, cowl, socks, fingerless gloves, arm warmers etc)? Anything that you are thoughtful enough to make for me, I will cherish.   Is there anyone else in your house (kids, pets, partner) that would really appreciate a small gift being included for them in the switchwitchy haul so they don't feel left out? You really don't need to include something if it is "work" (don't want my witch to feel pressured!) but if you feel a need to pass the love to the rest of my household, hubs loves chocolate and peanut butter, the kids love all candy, and small necklaces/bracelets are always a hit with the two small ones.   Since it's been mentioned several times, and I've also offered to nacho witch some, would you you like to receive wild rice and or maple syrup? I promise to include recipe ideas with the wild rice. OH, GODS, please!!!   I have 5 bushels of tomatoes sitting in the kitchen right now that are supposed to turn into red sauce tomorrow, so would anyone like a basic red sauce (spaghetti sauce) to make its way to them? Yes!!   How would you feel about a taste of (insert witch location here) box If you love it and want to share, please do!   Last year, my wonderful witch Alethia adopted a bat for me from batworld.org, a bat rescue and sanctuary. Bat's World Would you be interested in having a bat adopted in your name? I think this is a cool idea! I love bats and respect that they serve a purpose.   Some of your favorite artists? Classic and modern? I've loved Boris Valejo, but for now, go see my etsy Faves.   If you could have an image or certain subject painted for you on any type of "canvas" (on a box, on paper, on a canvas, and so on) - could you point your witch to some of these images? Etsy Faves!   Is there a GC scent that's been on your list for ages but keeps falling off the bottom of your order because of the LEs? Envy. If the Last Unicorn scents count, then Magic, Do As You Will. By the same token, if Fraggles count, then Mokey!   I've been getting into indie nail polish brands recently. What's your favorite indie brand of nail polish? Or what's your favorite mainstream brand of nail polish? Or are you not big on polish? Ha. I LOVED my Nerd Lacquer trio but needed the money more, so I sold them. I do like polish-indie or mainstream-deep metallics, shiny, jewels.   mix-in-a-jar? How to you feel about cookie or cake or soup mixes that come in jars and you just add, like, an egg or water or what have you? I'm good with those as I like "easy". Send 'em along!   I live near this very cool Retro store (you can order online too) - are there things from it that would make you squee if your witch sent them? Oh, holy crap-YES!   Would you be interested in beer, wine, or other specialty beverages from your Witch's area? If you're willing to risk a misdemeanor to do so, then I say "Yes!" Keeping in mind that I like my alcohol on the sweet side (honey mead, rieslings, sherry, hard cider, etc)!   Are there any crafts/skills you've wanted to learn but haven't gotten around to? And if so, would you be interested in supplies and tutorials? Only art journaling at this time. Yes, I would love some tips and tricks and examples, especially! I'm not great in the "inspiration" area and often just don't know what to do or what order I want to do it in   Who here would be happy to get a lil' sumthin sumthin from Adagio Teas? Yes, please! I'm a black tea gal-I take it with (soy)milk and sugar. I've got a great Monk's Breakfast, Hot Buttered Rum, and Wild Blackberry trio of loose leafs that I just started experimenting with. My tea ball fell apart, though.   Do you Ravelry? And if so, what's your handle over there? Would you be interested in gift patterns from your queue? You betcha. I'm turtlejen over there and yes-I would be interested in gift patterns from my queue. Just don't mind me if I don't get that item made...immediately.   Who likes Pumpkin Spice Hershey Kisses? Um. From: Autumn Cider

Just got this as an extremely generous sniffie (enough for at least a couple of trials in here!) from a forumite, and WOW. I love BPAL's apple note, and this is gorgeous. It really does smell exactly like wonderful apple cider. If I had a full bottle I might be tempted to do like Alice and drink it! (joke, joke) I'm not sure I'd wear it a lot, since I'm not that into food/drink smells, but I think it'd be a perfect room scent for a fall/winter holiday party.     ETA because board code ≠ HTML code, sigh. Also, I think maybe this scent benefits a lot from aging. My 2011 bottle has a beautiful ripeness to it.   Source: Autumn Cider

From: Persephone

Persephone is my girl -- she's sitting on a shelf between her husband Hades and BFF Hecate. ;-) (Yes, I am a mythology geek.)   In the imp: YIKES, that's a very sharp strong chemical scent -- it doesn't even smell like perfume! A little scared here. I don't remember it smelling this way when I first wore it, years ago.   Wet: Thank goodness, as soon as I put it on the rose started coming up and softening the tang. Still kind of sharp and unpleasant.   Drydown: Still tart and wet -- I guess that's what people are calling "juicy" -- but the rose is amping more. It's also fading a bit. This is a little more harsh and faint than I remember -- I'm not getting that really fruity richness. The rose comes out more and more as time goes on, like Persephone returning to Demeter in the springtime. Recently I've been trying some "concept" scents that seem designed to go through various stages -- Wilhelmina Murray, Poisoned Apple -- and I'm really impressed. It's as if this little story gets told on your skin. For me Persephone goes from sharp pomegranate softened by rose, to faint rose with pomegranate tang. Definitely sweet but there's almost something a little melancholy to it.   Hours later: A sweet but tangy juicy delicious smell. It does fade more quickly than I'd like, but that's a good excuse to keep slathering it on. Persephone and I are reunited again!   Source: Persephone
