Agony and ecstasy: black leather and damp red rose.

 

Just what it says on the tin--rose and leather. It's a simple blend but it works--very Phedre no Delaunay. (For the rest of the Night Court, you need Long Night Moon!) The rose and leather take turns dominating the blend, back and forth. I don't amp it up super high, but I know it's there, and it makes me feel romantic and kinky at the same time.

This is pinging my memory, but I can't figure out why. It's roses and leather, true to description. I get more rose than leather, and it's a fresh rose. I still can't pinpoint why it's familiar to me, but I do enjoy it quite a bit. I'd sooner classify it as a rose scent with leather rather than the other way around.

In the imp: This actually smells extremely faint to me. I get the barest whiff of a floral that I believe might be the echo of rose, but I really don't smell much of anything at all. (I did receive the imp from a post-Lab seller. I trust that the imp is genuine, but I'm not sure about age.)

 

On my skin:

 

To start, based on the faintness I smelled in the imp, I slathered this sucker on. I can tell what I'm smelling is rose -- and it is stronger than in the imp -- but it's still very faint. As it dries, I get some light rose throw, and if I stick my nose way down in the crook of my elbow, I can detect some soft leather close to my skin. Given time to develop, the rose does grow a bit stronger -- but also at this stage, a bit soapy. 

 

Verdict? It's just not my rose.

Faint rose indeed! But it IS that lovely, sweet thick red rose BPAL does sooo well. The leather is minimal, but keeps this a little "cold".

I bought this in the expectation that the rose might be the same type of rose in "Rose Red", but it's not. It's higher-pitched and ... sneezy? Drier? It makes my nose tingle. I guess I get why people smell it as a 'wet' rose 'cause it smells wilted, but on me, it's dry at the same time, somehow? Weird. The leather's very cologne-y. It takes a while for me to like this, but when it's just right, the rose is balanced with the leather, and it smells like a sexy cologne. Unisex, could easily be worn by a man, a woman, or anyone in between. I loved this, but it wasn't what I thought it would be.

As others have mentioned, this definitely makes me think of Phedre from the Kushiel books. ? Also, it's a gorgeous rose blend. Sometimes rose tends to me a bit sweet for me, but the leather grounds the rose here and makes it lighter (also, I'm a fan of leather, so that probably helps). Very fresh and sensual.

Have you ever been to Harley Davidson or Sturgis. This is that smell. It’s heavy leather and rose. It smells like a biker looks. It’s nice but it what I’d want to wear on a daily.

This is beautiful, soft, sweet, slightly powdery rose.  It's soft and silky like sniffing red rose petals.  The leather is very subtle and is under the rose scent keeping it from going to sweet or floral. If I didn't know there was leather in this, I wouldn't list it as a scent. This is the perfect rose scent on me.

This is leather and damp red rose as it is listed - not a soapy rose, indeed fresh and juicy as if you'd just plucked off one of the red petals.

It is so much nicer than I would have thought!

Normally, I don't like leather or rose. While I don't care much for the leather, the rose note is quite nice actually.

It's fresh, a bit spicy, floral of course.

I'll keep this for referencing more good rose scents in the future that might work on me.

The rose smells fresh-cut and, indeed, a bit damp - similar to The Rose from the Märchen collection. Sadly, the leather smells plasticky on me.

This reminds me of a rainy day in the springtime. The leather gives off a "new car" smell, but also a watery smell. It does not smell like petrichor, though. It is more like a watering your roses type scent. It is very nice and unique!

For context: I am brand-new to the world of scents! I previously never wore fragrance. I'm extremely sensitive to smells, and fell into a rabbit hole while searching for a perfume that matched my favorite rose + leather candle. That rabbithole let to me placing large sample orders to BPAL and Fantome after joining the IMAM sub.

 

Me: 30-something trans man working an office job.

Notes I like: Rose, wood, smoke, leather, orange, realistic coffee.

Notes I'm OK with if they're not too strong: Berry, aquatics, incense, vanilla, amber.

Notes I dislike: Gourmands, sweet cream, artificial fruit (especially lemon, banana, and watermelon).

In my hunt for a perfect rose and leather scent, I hoped this would be what I was looking for. It was not, though it's a nice scent that could be a great fit for others. 

 

In the bottle: Sharp. This is lemon pledge lite. I'm not getting getting any leather. There's some high, greenish notes of rose if I focus. Contrary to most of the reviews here, I don't feel like this is the same lush red rose as Peacock Queen. This one seems greener and sharper. But perhaps it'll mellow out on my skin. 

 

Wet on my skin: Still pretty sharp lemon wet wipes. The florals are unrolling, and I smell a clean aquatic as well. Lemony all the way. I'm not sure I would've identified the floral as rose if I didn't know beforehand. Sniffing it makes my head hurt a little, like when I try to sing way above my pitch register. 

 

Dry on my skin:

• 5-10 minutes on my skin, the lemon is starting to take a backseat, and I'm getting a little leather now. I don't know if I would've identified it as a leather note if I hadn't already known. I can't quite decide if it's a new, shiny black leather, or a soft old warm leather.
• 30+ minutes in, the lemon is gone, the green is gone, and it's definitely rose and leather - however, it's not quite the leather I was looking for. It's the sharp, awake, and zinging tang of a brand new car, whereas I'm looking for a sleepy, cozy, warm leather of a beloved old pair of gloves. There's also a touch of powder, akin to the expensive makeup of a rich woman.
• 60+ minutes in: A bouquet of long-stemmed roses from a designer florist, tucked in between the leather seats of a new car. The rose and leather isn't mixing into the comforting blend I was hoping for - this is more metropolitan. I feel like the person in this car has somewhere to go, and they're absolutely not going to be late. Unfortunately, I'm in the backseat and my childhood motion sickness memories are kicking in when I smell the leather of the new car. 

 

This smells smart and clean. It's a feminine-leaning scent with sharp no-nonsense touch to the rose. The person I imagine wearing this is an accomplished woman who is a consummate professional at work and always flawlessly put together. Her car -- if she isn't chauffeured -- is a luxury model in pristine condition. She will ask someone out on a date with confidence they'll say yes. If it goes well, she'll take them back to her place and make it known exactly what she wants. If it goes poorly, she'll say so mid-date, pay the bill, click her purse closed, and walk away on her high heels as her date gazes at her, wondering where they went wrong.
