  1. Wow, @Usagi, those paintings are beautiful and so perfect for @artisjok!!! Are they painted on black paperboard? With acrylic? Gouache? Spectacular!

@lorizav, glad you liked the package and sorry you had a rough day at work! The print was almost accidental — it was a test print for the images that were going to be in the towel ( I didn’t end up using the oak leaf). I have a big tube of gold ink I rarely use, so I rolled it out with that. And I liked how it looked, so I made a few of them before cutting apart the different elements.

  2.  Oh my, these packages are just AMAZING!!! That can project — I’ve never seen anything like it! And Twi saying the fox came out wonky is like my grandmother who always ate a tiny wedge out of whatever amazing cake or pie she was baking that day just so she could say it really hadn’t turned out all that well…

I’m going to have to give myself negative feedback because I’m not going to be able to ship until Saturday. @lorizav, I’m so sorry for the delay. You were first to ship and will be last to receive. I just returned from a week in California — I was supposed to finish my art before then, and that didn’t happen, then I brought art supplies with me to at least send something by Monday, but that didn’t happen either. I was free this afternoon and hoped to get it done but other stuff kept competing for my attention. Like the talk I have to give to my friend’s medieval manuscript class on Friday. Sorry!!!

On a personal note, have you ever gone online to get something they don't carry around you, then remembered that this thing also broke, looked to the side and had a reminder of this *other* thing that you needed... and ended up placing the order without ordering the thing that you went on to place the order for????

     .😉

    All. The. Time.

Y'all, @lorizav is raising the bar...  So.  Many.  Awesome.  Things!

Indeed she is!!! What an amazing package! Now I want a JRT tin!!!

HOWEVER, I don’t want anyone to be intimidated by all this fabulousness. Mailing date is 3/31 since we’re all domestic, and since that’s Easter, let’s call it 4/1. And all you signed up for is an art project, so if you don’t have the spoons for putting together an “extras” package, that’s perfectly fine. Art on!

  4. Answers here!

would you like hand knit items? Fingerless gloves,  hats, small shawl or neck gaiter? If yes,  please give measurements. I love all the knitted things because I don’t knit. But I do have three fabulous pairs of fingerless gloves in different colors from previous swaps, so I’m good there. The thing I need most is a hat because I lost a beloved friend-knitted hat last month. I have a large head — I don’t know my size, but large.

Let's say I'm going to make something with your favorite non-fantasy animal that comes in multiple colors of coat.  Do you want the "classic" color or would you like one of their lesser depicted colors?  Or a fantasy color like blue or purple?

Both those ideas appeal to me! My Jack Russell terrier is traditional smooth coat reddish brown and white but could just as easily be yellow and blue or whatever. Other animals, same. I hope I answered this question; I don’t remember doing it…

Would you rather your creation had utility, or was simply aesthetic? No strong feelings either way. I treasure both useful and decorative art swap items I’ve received in the past!

I have multiple ideas. Would you like to see one idea repeated across two or three... "things", or would you like two or three different ideas manifested?  (Alternatively expressed as matching set vs. unrelated expressions.) again, no strong feeling either way. Trust your process — you’ll know whether idea 1 is finished or needs to be expressed more fully.

What are you hoping "I" will make "you"?? If you do go with the hat, which would be much appreciated, I measured my head and got 22” or a bit more. I have a lovely box Usagi painted for me in a previous art swap that holds my spring/summer BPAL bottles but lately I’ve bought a lot of decants in the tiny squat bottles Ajevie calls slonks and I haven’t figured out a good system for storing them yet, so a slonk box would be amazing. So would a custom journal or sketchbook. I love zipper or Velcro pouches; I use them for art supplies, tarot cards, purse organizers, etc. I welcome necklaces and earrings, or you could macrame me a belt or a plant hanger.  For 2D things, I love watercolors, from the very swooshy to the very detailed; I love pen and ink drawings and linocut prints; I don’t paint in oil or acrylic so would be excited by a little painting of any kind. Truly I’m going to be excited by anything you choose to make me.

What do I make? I dabble in watercolor and block printing, and can print on fabric; I made a faux medieval manuscript thingy for the tiny art swap once; I can do woodburning (usually spoons) and other drawing sorts of things.

What are your feelings about bags? Do you like certain size? Would you be okay with a purely decorative small bag, or does that just sound bonkers? I love bags of all sizes, including pouches as mentioned above, but like yowahoshihime I think I’d prefer usable. I’m not even sure what a purely decorative bag would be!

  5. Everyone should have a match!!! If I gave you your own address or said, "You're matched with X" and the questionnaire belongs to Y, please let me know, but I'm crossing my fingers that I did it right. Happy arting, everyone!

    I sent mine in.

hey, I got a postcard from Italy yesterday, hahaha.  😂

That is hysterical.  Three and a half months late.  That's the Italian postal service for you.  Next time I just mail all the postcards when I get home.

  6. @MadameGorgon@winterblizzard No need to panic!  The deadline is Tuesday, February 20 -- I had planned a few extra days for moderator approval, but fabulous Em- approved it immediately. I'll try to match Feb. 21 but allowed myself a couple extra days.  By the 24th at the very latest.

@twilighteyes and @everyone else, don't worry about extras -- that's above and beyond.  All you're responsible for is your art/craftwork.  Extras are lovely but they are not in any way necessary.  I for one, being a complete non-knitter, LOVE all the knitted things! Let me know if you change your mind, and @spookygrrrly, you have until Tuesday to join in.

@yowahoshihime @artisjok I'm still waiting on your questionnaires!

@foxwrapped @llamadolly It feels weird to be doing an art swap without you...

  7. It’s been ages since we had an art swap – let’s change that! Join the Late Winter Art/Craft Swap and create something to brighten a BPAL lover’s life. Whether you are cozying up and enjoying the last of winter’s frost or counting the days until the spring equinox, you can use the still-long nights to knit or paint or create.

Each participant will make a piece of art/craft to be mailed to their recipient. Any medium is welcome:  drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, fabric art, jewelry, wearable art, embroidery, photography, altoid tin diorama, wreath, etc. Please respect your partner's preferences on size (if someone says they have limited space, don't send them a 5' x 5' canvas to hang on the wall). This should be a low-cost swap if you already have the materials you need on hand. Also, it is totally fine to play and experiment and try a new medium. No one expects a Michelangelo.

Please be willing to squee in this thread when your art arrives and post a photo if at all possible!

Sign-ups open until February 20 or until 14 participants have signed up, whichever comes first. International participants welcome. Matches will be made by February 24.  SHIPPING DEADLINE WILL BE MARCH 24 for international shipping, MARCH 31 for domestic.  That should give us four to five weeks for incubating our projects.

Please PM me the questionnaire below if you'd like to join in. As with all swaps, we can ask more specific questions of each other once matches have gone out.

  8. Dead Leaves, Scorched Pumpkin, and Marshmallows starts out a lot like Dead Leaves on Fire, a signature scent from that dumpster fire of a year, 2020.  If there's pumpkin and marshmallows, they're scorched, too.  It takes the better part of an hour for the burnt leaves smell to recede, but since I own and wear DLoF, that's not a deal breaker for me.  Eventually it's smoky dead leaves and roasted marshmallows with a little bit of pumpkin in the background.  Just pumpkin, no pie spices.  The toasted marshmallow note lasts the longest, as a skin scent.  Very nice.

  9. I can't believe that Wayfaring Stranger has only two reviews.  It's a gorgeous and unusual addition to the Lights of Men's Lives family of candle scents.  This one starts out harsh, with the raw whiskey and tobacco notes in the forefront.  This is not a lovingly aged scotch and a smooth tobacco; this scent starts out a dive bar.  I get rust but surprisingly little dust, which can be a strong note on me.  So yes, the opening is kind of foreboding.  But as the booze and tobacco warm and soften, the sweeter coconut husk and especially the beeswax emerge, and the combination works really nicely.  I love elissamay's description of an ofrenda -- it's very evocative of the vibe I get from this.  My favorite 2023 Weenie so far.

  10. I’m a tiny bit puzzled why I chose to buy this decant. Dragon’s blood and red oudh are rarely a success on me, and red musk is touch and go. Black currant, amber and woodsmoke sounds nice, though, and they are. Like white_jenna63, though, I mainly get dragons blood and fruity red musk. There’s a bit of pepper and a nice backdrop of amber, but they’re definitely secondary. I hope the woodsmoke lasts longer as it ages as the early phase of this with the smokiness apparent is my favorite.

  11. Apparently I never reviewed Wednesday's Child.  I'm one, full of woe FTW!  And I love this big clove scent.  It isn't complicated, which is probably why it fits Beth's idea of a kid's goth perfume, but it's not an infantile sugarbomb foodie.  Sugary clove is the star here, everything else is singing quiet backup vocals though if I try hard I can smell the patch, the cocoa, even the tiniest bit of cherry and dried roses.  If clove is a knockout note on you, this is one to search out.

  12. Ink Feather might have been crafted just for me.  I love the licorice note in all its incarnations, from root to whip, and it starts out strong on beautiful dark sweet earthy licorice.  For a while it's a licorice root amber perfume, then a licorice root patchouli one, and it ends for me as a soft licorice incense which is a big warm blanket for my soul, but also sexy, probably because it makes me feel good.  I suspect we licorice lovers are few but fervid, and we need this.
