BPAL Madness!

Recommended Posts

He is, as Lestat observed with some exasperation, a library of confusion. Dark vetiver, a good suit, bitter coffee, and something burning at its edges, the acrid note of a man seething quietly at every injustice he has swallowed, stalks through the night-blooming osmanthus of New Orleans, smoke wafting from from the Fair Play Saloon, a splash of bay rum, and the heady sweetness of magnolia. Beneath it all is scorched sandalwood, dry patchouli, and the unmistakable hot, spiced sweetness of blood. I hate the sunrise and the reminders it brings.

Oh lordt, this scent is perfect. It’s absolutely gorgeous. It’s all dark vetiver and something that comes across as clean in the bottle but then on my skin it’s smoky and slightly sweet, then turns heady from the magnolia. The bay rum & blood notes give it that little bit of spice. I just knew Beth was going to burn it down with this line and I am glad to say that I was right. The aging on this is going to be divine.

Louis is blood and the heady magnolia blooms of New Orleans entwined with sensual sandalwood. Faint remnants of human life are flashbacks of once being mortal—coffee dregs, a splash of bay rum, deep vetiver of the earth—overcome by something dark and ancient. There is something of a muskiness that warms flesh which is otherwise cold and undead. As the night wears on, it becomes a veil of shadow that clings long after the vampires have sated themselves.

A gloved hand clapped over a mouth, but the thing inside the glove is not a living thing, not really now not anymore. Scorched black grounds at the bottom of a pot, bitter past all drinking. Three creamy blooms, wafts of wax and rind and cold cream, tea brown at the edges. Dusty tonic on a shelf. Apricot-skinned upholstery. Suffocating sadness in the form of chandeliers, powdery, dim, low-hanging. The melancholy of a front room nobody sits in and the windows painted shut. Kid leather mourning gloves, three pearl buttons at the wrist, a seam pressed against a cheek.

Louis is a stunner! but we all knew that. it just so happens that this fragrance is also perfect and gorgeous like Geminirubyshoes said above - the perfect notes for him, in the perfect balance.

I may be biased of course, because I will always love a vetiver patchouli base, but the artistry!! of everything else layered over it takes my breath away. the interplay of the florals and the bay rum with the sandalwood and the coffee is to die for. I always wear a little bit of perfume oil under my shirt and some on my neck and wrists, and I can smell different aspects of the scent in the different spots - if you get some on or under fabric, it holds onto the floral and bay rum longer, and the scent on exposed skin goes a bit smokier and darker. it's kinda posh and kinda brooding and totally swoonworthy, so all in all, very Louis! my fav of the character scents released so far.

This is perfection. Like, I don't even want to review it, it's so good. There are layers to this Louis, like show!Louis and book!Louis melded together. The old world brood and despair of Louis blended with the charismatic gloom of newer world Louis. It also strikes me as Jacob Anderson in a bottle, too. So. Many. Layers.

Bay rum bliss with a sweetness of floral and freshly spilled blood peeking through a gentle haze of good-smelling cigar smoke, all just barely wrapped in a fine linen. I don't really pick up the sandalwood or patch but I think they're winding thru that sensational BPAL bay rum for me.

Let the tale seduce you, indeed!

Overall, it reminds me so much of New Orleans and like all the trips I've had there put into a tiny bottle. It's so beautiful.

I went to one of the oldest perfume shops in the US (referenced in Tom Robbins' Jitterbug Perfume) and smelled their variations on vetiver and bay rum perfumes, and bought a vetiver soap that I kept in the bathroom cabinet for years before finally using it.

Every inhale brings a different snapshot to my mind.

The magnolia blossoms wafting in from the heavy summer breezes. The bone-vibrating call of the cicadas hiding in throughout the trees.

The constant cups of Cafe du Monde accompanying my days. Listening to Tom Waits in the park.

I smell cigar smoke from altar offerings, incense smoke wandering out of occult shops.

That coppery, spicy blood!*

*my trips to New Orleans contained no blood.

In the bottle: This seems deceptively simple.  I get coffee first off, a thread of very fine vetiver underneath and magnolia drifting on top.

On the skin: quite subdued to begin with, I get anise quite strongly which may actually be the bay rum interacting with the coffee.  This does shift and morph a lot.  Every time I think it's not for me something interesting blooms.  This seems almost gourmand.  I think I like it but I'm really not sure.  Odd.  It is certainly not loud.

So layered and complex I'm having a hard time describing the feeling it gives me! Every time I lean in, I sniff something new. This is one of those amazing scents that takes you on a journey, and each note is there and bringing something to the table. Overall, intense (especially with that blood note!) but woozy. There's a sort of sophistication to it, but also its a bit drunken. The bay rum and magnolia play beautifully together, as well as the osmanthus dancing over those dark vetiver, sandalwood and patchouli notes. Beautiful, a bit sexy, a bit frightening, a bit angry. It makes me feel like a ghost wandering around the streets of new orleans. Very, very Louis.

Got this fresh from a desert mailbox on a humid day.

Wet:  HOT sweet coffee and rum.

Semi-dry:  faint smoke, rum, magnolia, patchouli.

Dry: Sandalwood, patchouli, sweet white flowers, rum.

I want to cuddle with the dry stage.  I feel warm and fuzzy with it. The flowers are there but fighting for their lives against the rum.

I was sad when the middle stage was over.  I don't know what I've smelled anything like it but it was very evocative of what his part of NO should smell like based on the show.  It had a definite warm summer night feel.
