don't panic, this ray-finned royal just needs a moment on the skin to evolve. at first it went on weirdly clean smelling, and then promptly settled into the expected foodie patch. on the subtler end of this style of scent.

I've tried this one a couple times now and it's a really good balance between earthy patchouli and tart fruitiness. It starts out mostly about the delicious smelling fruit, but the patch comes forward more upon dry down. Clings close to the skin but lasts a good few hours on me. Easy to wear out and about.

Melted Jolly Rancher in the wet open on skin, sticky and saccharine. The currant is just tart enough to not make the sweetness completely overwhelming as it dries down. It's over an hour before the patchouli becomes detectable, helping to ground and balance the scent as a whole. As the fruity intensity abates, there is a really nice jammy quality that starts to emerge. The patchouli is mostly what remains at 3 hours in. Moderate sillage and around 6 hours of wear all in. 

 

Fans of the BPAL pomegranate note will probably really enjoy this one, as it feels like the fruits here are all cousins. Something about it reads more fall to me, but really it's appropriate in any cooler weather day; summer heat and humidity would likely amp it into overdrive. This is another one of several Yule 2025 scents that I expect will age like fine wine.

Maybe this is a blending accident. I smell something minty or birch-y or wintergreen-y, but in a warm way. Nothing fruity or resiny - just a weirdly warm-toned, astringent mint. 

 

Gradually, though, that becomes ... candied dates? Dates do smell interesting and complex down at their pith, sure, so I could see dates from this fume. And now, okay, now I'm getting fruitcake, riotously fruit-studded fruitcake with a scorched-sugar edge to the crust - something like black treacle or extra-dark cane syrup. 

 

.... no. No? No. Yes? No? Still astringent. Is the astringency the red currant? Yes. Is there patchouli in here? Slowly, slowly, creeping forward .... yes? 

 

... still dragging that complex medicinal MINT with it, tho? Yes. 

 

I'm stumped. Baffled. Flusterical. I don't know what I'm smelling, or if I like it. I want to love it, but it's currently acting like fruitcake-flavored cough syrup, even though I can SEE the chewy patchouli wanting to come through. 

 

I'm going to come back and edit this review when I've figured it out. Sorry for liveblogging my confusion.
