A sorrowful 16th-century love ballad reimagined as a yuletide hymn: heavy bolts of oakmoss-colored velvet, a heart of gold weeping sticky tears of balsam.

Freshly landed decant. I ordered it partly because I'm a long-time Loreena McKennitt fan, partly because I love oakmoss. I sniffed without checking the notes and I was like "this smells like ... cloth?" How does Beth DO that? It literally smells gold and green. The cloth impression goes away as soon as it hits my skin, and the oakmoss picks up steam almost immediately - which is just fine with me. I am not really picking up the balsam, but this is overall very dry, warm, resinous, and I don't know if I'd call it Christmassy but it works fine for a winter season scent. It is quite strong on my wrist, but not a whole lot of throw, although that might change with some body heat.

 

After about five minutes - oh, there's the balsam. It's still very oakmoss heavy.

 

Adding a full size bottle to my wishlist pronto.

Okay here me out. Stay with me here. It's giving pure innocent priest. But one looking for more answers from faith. This feels like the the lead Mr. Reed from the movie Heretic. On the skin it starts turning into a older gentleman cologne. I can start to imagine coming home for Christmas and hooking up with lonely older guy. 8/10 smell

Ohhhh, gorgeous! Understated and oakmoss-forward, with a bit of resinous warmth juuuust barely sweetening and softening that dry oakmoss edge. This is not incredibly "winter holidays" coded after its wet stage (which *does* feel Yule-y to me) and I could see this being the right person's signature scent. I love this?? Not my general wheelhouse but wowow!

I am so pleased with this blind bottle purchase. Though I historically do not enjoy oakmoss, (and since it doesn't technically list it as a note), I do love this song, the artwork, and balsam. Something magical happens in this blend, conjuring soft velvet that holds the memory of frankincense blessings in a quiet church in December. Gold and green, indeed! I cannot wait to love the hell outta this come this winter!
