Well-worn leather, a hint of rum, and the smooth, salt-worn planks of a ship's deck. Very clean.

The Antikythera Mechanism
monocainsheresy replied to VioletChaos's topic in Phoenix Steamworks & Research Facility
Scratchy tobacco and polished woods - more teak than oak. I can't smell the vanilla so much as feel it - it makes this scent smooth and warm. A traditionally masculine scent that isn't boozy or herbal - huzzah! An antique wooden box lined in gold and the dust of tobacco leaves... -
Oooh - the vetiver and lemon rind combo is very reminiscent of Bram Stoker, and the woods are somehow lending this a strong licorice note! No smoke on me. Bram Stoker's fun sister.

Lilies and coconut. Tropical, but not like sunscreen. Very pleasant, but fleeting and not terribly interesting.

Blueberries, Cream, & Cardamom
monocainsheresy replied to zankoku_zen's topic in Duets & Menage A Trois
The blueberry is very forward in the bottle but the cardamom cream is the star once it hits the skin. Thick sweet cream with mounds of cardamom crumbs - that comforting, doughy-plasticy autumn craft store smell. The blueberry hangs out in the background adding roundness and depth, occasionally coming forward in little spurts. This one is probably best enjoyed when the wearer is in motion - I get the blueberry more in the little scent trail I leave behind rather than smelling it straight off my skin. Foody and soothing, and exactly what I was looking for. -
Oh my. This is a stunner. Pollen-dusted beeswax and fresh, green amber. Surprisingly, this is very much a late spring/early summer scent on me - bees with clumps of pollen on their legs and sap running down bark. It's a sticky scent, but from gooey amber instead of honey. This amber is liquid and smells of trees, almost of olive oil. Anointed beeswax candles.

2019 version Alas, I am disappointed. Sweet and woody - soft, low throw. The smooth lemony frankincense of The Fiery Mountains, myrrh, and I swear there is a drop of red wine in there. Like a very gentle sibling of Practical Occultism 2018. This is actually remarkably fruity. Hopefully with aging the resins will get dustier and smokier like I was hoping for.

Similarities Between BPAL Scents - GC and general discussion
monocainsheresy replied to Shollin's topic in Recommendations
Is there anyone here who's tried Dee and John Locke side by side? I really like Dee and my nose automatically puts lavender into it because I strongly associate lavender with tonka, but I'm wondering how it compares to a real lavender-tonk-leather blend. I feel like it would be a bit silly to order bottles of both until I know if they're appreciably different. I'm especially curious about how the spice of John Locke compares to the woods of Dee. I've been wobbling on Dee for months because I know I don't like the way rosewood ages, but on the other hand my skin swallows all spice except cinnamon and I don't know if that's the spice of John Locke, and without the spice I feel it would smell almost exactly the same as Dee. Help! -

Patchouli, honey, and a touch of vetiver. Bright despite the wood notes in the description. Average men's cologne type smell.- 26 replies

Sweets and sap! Freshly cut sugar cane and mallow flower, orris, smokey sandalwood, and a honey + vanilla base. Sweet and sticky but definitely not gourmand - a bright springtime scent.- 24 replies

Blue cypress on a base of amber and vanilla with the benzoin hovering in between. No smoke. Gives the impression of ambergris and oranges. Very clean. A bit disappointed in this one - it smells an awful lot like a generic paper perfume sample from a Kohl's catalogue.- 25 replies

Jasmine honey on a cloud of vanilla and the olive + champaca flowers, over a very mild base of powdered cinnamon and sandalwood. Sweet warm silk.

Bruised Violet Compound
monocainsheresy replied to Leopard403's topic in Doc Constantine's Pharmacopoeia
Starts off with soft violets and moss and quickly turns into scratchy patchouli with a touch of red currant juice. Fresh, clean, herbal dirt. -
This is SPECTACULAR The lovechild of Old Scratch and Smokestack. Burnt sandalwood, smoky lavender, and tobacco. Bitter, woody, and herbal, with the lavender taking off the harsh edge.
-
Honeysuckle, mandarin, and salt front and center over a green musk base. Fresh, softly sweet and floral - overall impression of "melon". A scent of cheerful aliens having a spa day.
-
"Effervescent" indeed! Bubbly lemon and bergamot that dries down into a sweet, almost sugary vanilla musk.

Very, very faint, even in the bottle. I can't pick out any specific notes except a bit of the rose. You know the smell of a box of bpal straight out of the mail, before you open any of the bottles? This is that. The is liquid bpal box. And that is something I've always wanted, so I am quite pleased! Virtually no throw, and barely floral at this age (8 years).

This smells EXACTLY like the Roberson mansion in my hometown! Sweet and sticky and warm in the bottle. On the skin the musk (black) comes forward and the stickiness goes away. Some sort of vanilla cookie, spices (nutmeg?), tea leaves, and... myrrh? There has to be some sort of resin or wood in here. I would like 3 more bottles please.

Lavender cotton candy, Snake Oil, and honey. No rosewater on me. I love lavender and cotton candy and my skin amps both, so I adore this!

Blueberry and a pink bubblegum note that is very specifically the dust on the outside of a freshly unwrapped piece Warm and sweet. The bucket of Dubble Bubble that the teacher would bring out when we were especially good.
-
Toasted vanilla gingerbread and woody, resiny oudh, and a distant pine note to keep it from being too dark. Bready and smokey. Definitely a holiday scent but with a twist. This would be a spectacular candle.

If you are allergic to chocolate but can wear scents with it where it isn't so prominent, avoid this. I couldn't even rub it in and had to wipe it off because it was so itchy. COCOA, Snake Oil, and rice milk, and teakwood shavings way in the background. Trying to be sweet, kind of plasticy. Like the smell of a full plastic trick-or-treating bucket. This would probably be much more interesting without the cocoa.

2012 version Brown sugar, something spicy, and a little bit of fruit. Much more caramel-y and foodie than expected. Sticky and almost boozy.

Sugared patchouli, sweet amber, and beautiful lavender. Warm and sweet and relaxing. This is fantastic!

Very lavender-forward in the bottle; on the skin the rosewood is immediately front and center with the lovely incensey sandalwood + palo santo combo making it appropriately churchy and morgue-like for the concept. The lavender is there but very much in the back seat. Rose and lavender incense and wood.
