BPAL Madness!

Recommended Posts

Tartly sweet, brusquely pavement-kissed, zesty with fermentation, dusted with leaf-litter, and relished by opportunistic squirrels craving a tipple.

When I was a kid, we used to go apple picking in upstate New York. There were packed dirt roads throughout the orchard so cars could just barely make it through to park on the grass. Tires were always crunching on fallen apples, most of which had already been gnawed on by insects or squirrels, some more fermented with others. There were always apples lying on either side of the road among drifts of dead leaves. This is the scent of deep nostalgia: breaths of crisp autumn air and sweet-tart apples riddled with blotches of brownish fermentation, always with a few dry leaves carried on the wind.

What a fantastic apple scent! Perfectly crisp like your first bite while apple picking

Sidewalk Apples starts off with a blast of tart (but not green!) apple and a whoosh of dead leaves on some pavement. I wouldn't let the fermented aspect of the scent scare you away, as I believe that is just highlighting the intense apple at first -- there's no whiff of decay! At one point, I couldn't help but wondering if there were some motor oil or something akin to the Lab's ink note on the pavement, as it veered into a more industrial phase, before settling into what I would describe as Dead Leaves and Cement Atmo plus apple.

Dead leaves and I don't really get along, so this isn't a bottle for me, but if you and dead leaves get along and you're looking for a more atmospheric apple-y scent, give this one a try!

I didn't expect to like this one as much as I do! It's heavy on the dead leaves as first, with petrichorish sidewalk and some apple. However, this take a turn for the better, smelling more and more like a cemetery in autumn with apples on the ground. At first, it's very much like the scents October and November, but less cold, and also reminds me of the blend St Louis Cemetery. The sidewalk note really does bring to mind the old cemeteries we have here on the East Coast. Although there is a petrichor vibe, this is quite a dry blend overall.

I think if you like many of the 'PAL's or other indie cemetery blends, you'll like this one. Layered with a dark rainy blend like leather + rain, you'd have an atmosphere like The Crow with blustering leaves, sorrow, and vengeance on the wind. I'm considering a bottle, yet this is much more of a room scent for me.
