BPAL Madness!

Recommended Posts

A rare, complex, and challenging serpent, the Sang-de-Boeuf is born from fire, pressure, and chance and treasures masterpieces of beauty that reveal themselves under heat and duress. Its scales are a deep, passionate red draped in lacquered shadows: glazed black cherries, Kyphi smoke, plum wine, and red sandalwood.

Sang-de-Boeuf Dragon starts off with a burst of black cherries, which are glorious, sitting on top of a bed of Kyphi smoke and incense. Alas, the cherry note does not stick around for very long. This quickly becomes an incense and resin blend on me, touched by what remains of the cherry, and the plum wine, which is not sweet like the Lab's other plum notes (fortunately!). I think the Kyphi smoke has some champaca in it that went a bit dryer sheet on my partner and me, so that's the other downside to this scent. However, if the cherry note had stayed as strong as it were initially, I wouldn't even care about the somewhat dryer-sheet incense smoke.

I tested this twice, and the second time, I deathmatched it against The Woman Clothed With the Sun and the War in Heaven, because they both feature resins and black cherry (Celestial drama. Radiant pomegranate crowned with golden amber and saffron, a waft of singed frankincense, and velvet black cherry). They don't smell alike, as The Woman Clothed With the Sun and the War in Heaven isn't nearly as dark. I don't get the singed quality from the frankincense in that one, so it doesn't have a smoky aspect, and it is also sweeter thanks to the cherry being backed up by the pomegranate. Of the two, I prefer The Woman Clothed With the Sun, since it lacks the smokiness, the cherry sticks around longer, and the cherry and golden amber combo is more up my alley and perfect to pair with Pa-Pow Hair Gloss.

I haven't decided if this one is a keeper yet. If the cherry weren't so fleeting, it definitely would be, as that black cherry note is amazing. But I don't love the Kyphi smoke, which becomes the dominant aspect of the scent on me. If I do keep it, I would probably slather it on my partner more than myself. I'll have to spend more time with it before I make my verdict.
