The Fading Crimson of the Sky

A scent both bright and subdued: bergamot shuddering through lime leaves, ruby-tinged amber sunlight, violet leaf, oak bark, and sandalwood smoke.

 

We sat down on a rude bench, under a group of magnificent lime trees. The sun was setting with all its melancholy splendor behind the sylvan horizon, and the stream that flows beside our home, and passes under the steep old bridge I have mentioned, wound through many a group of noble trees, almost at our feet, reflecting in its current the fading crimson of the sky.

Usually blends like this go sour or too sweet on my skin, but so far this is a refreshing combo of lime and bergamot over dreamy, powdery violet with a sandalwood base.

 

Like a violet pastille with a squeeze of lime/bergamot. This is less sweet than some of BPALs other powdery violets.

The lime leaf, violet leaf, and oak combine into a sour, sharp woodsy note that dominates the scent. I cannot pick out the bergamot, but I think it's adding to the lime leaf. But this is not a citrus scent at all, the lime is noticeable, but it's especially green and woodsy, almost herbal. The sandalwood provides a smooth oud that sits in the background and gains strength with time. I was really surprised how un-citrus this scent is, despite being lime forward. Instead, it's a very green, leafy, woodsy scent.

For me, the “ruby-tinged amber sunlight” comes through first, both on my skin and when I try this scent on a testing strip. The scent has a slightly wan warmth and an expansive feeling that makes me think of being outdoors. As it dries, the woods come forward for me, though I never really pick up anything green. I suspect bergamot is in here helping to drive my positive reaction, although I can’t pick it out from the blend — but many of my favorite scents have that note.

 

I love the way scents can capture a feeling or a story, and this definitely smells to me like watching a sunset outside near a fragrant woods. When fresh, it has significant throw, and while it disappeared from my skin after eight hours, after 24 hours on my testing strip, it’s still going strong.
