Lines Written by a Bear of Very Little Brain

This makes me smile! Again a comforting scent. Almond is not listed among the notes but it seems to be present here, giving a little bit of biscotti crunch along with the gloopy but not overly-sweet cardamom rice pudding served up by Snow White.

    The Woodland So Wild

This is a new absolute all-time favourite! Just gorgeous.

    With Care and With Joy

On me this is gourmand-y and sweet but doesn’t smell specifically like milk or honey to my nose, although there is something of a cereal vibe. It almost seems to have a little bit of the Lab’s fur note - for some reason it conjures up the image of a little kitten.

    Gloomily, Gloomily

Beautiful and a bit darker than I’d expected - there’s more than just a little smudge of ash when freshly applied. The forlorn, melancholy vibe really is there - rain-soaked laundry and a fleeting thought of funeral flowers. But then with Donkey’s Tail layered on top? We go into fairy ballerina territory, complimentary. There’s a similarity to Dangers Untold - fabric and the vague sense of hairspray. Adding the tail gives GG a more traditionally pretty and femme aspect, and I love it either way.

    One Has To Be Careful

A carrot cake minus the spice and made with bran - nutritious but more delicious than appearances might suggest. There’s even a cream cheese frosting-like tang. Lemon verbena is usually a no-no for me but here it provides uplifting support.

He Forgot To Be Frightened Any More

This is a pretty unique one - the notes meld a bit differently to how I’d imagined from the description. The almond-marzipan and red bean paste elements were really in the forefront when I first applied it, with a high pitched squeal of clover backed up by the strawberry coming in later. Once it settles it has some of the comforting-toasty quality it shares with Edward Bear, although it’s a bit more “new baby” than “beloved stuffed toy” here.

    Edward Bear

This is so lovely - I was a bit wary of the honey which often doesn’t work on me but this really does. It’s almost a “skin but better” type of scent for me - a gentle warm toasty glow with a bit of sweetness that isn’t overpowering.

    Dangers Untold

Well OK Sarah! As a big 80s fantasy fan this is certainly evocative of that subgenre in its way. This is Big Hair and Big White Dress: The Fragrance, but rather than the fairytale magic, this is more of what that would actually smell like behind the scenes. The powdery white florals of a specific hairspray, talc, makeup applied with well-loved brushes and a freshly dry-cleaned ballgown under the hot studio lights.

    Alien/Siren

On first application this was a bit intense and feral but it quickly calms down. A tar/creosote note with toasty edges amongst the aquatic stuff and glimmers of prettiness - this reminds me of spilled petrol with that rainbow iridescent sheen.

    Narcissus Rococo

This is gorgeously opulent though not overpowering, with the musk grounding the baroque drama of the top notes. It has a bit of an Anne Rice vampire vibe to it, like something Lestat might wear.

    Velvet Brick

This is lovely. The cocoa-vanilla isn’t gooey-chocolatey, it’s a thickly flocked dusting over something that is formed like a cookie, baked like a cookie, but is most definitely not a cookie. It’s a brick.

    Glitter Brick

Category is: A Party AND A Protest! This is an interesting (and delightful) combo of obstinate earth with giddy fruitiness and a spangly whiff of a little something extra in the air. It’s giving gay bar and I love it.

    Leather Brick

Mama, this smells like the back room of an old school gay club (complimentary). Super evocative.

    Brick Single Note

This whole collection is very special and I love what it represents. I’m generally a bit wary of single notes but this is gorgeous and more complex than I’d expected - and very wearable! There is a bit of grit here, and warmth. Something that evokes caramelization without overt sweetness. Unconventionally comforting.

    Jareth

I learned a lesson with Jareth - just how much the season/weather can affect your perception of a scent. As a fan of Labyrinth, Bowie and 80s fantasy, and someone who likes all of the listed notes, I thought this would be a surefire hit for me. My first time testing it, in late autumn/early winter, I felt a bit disappointed that I didn’t love it. At that time of year, the combination of sweet tonka, airy lilacs, leather and oudh (which tends to amp up on me) felt a little bit sickly and off-colour - it just doesn’t fit for cosy season. However, trying it today on a warm spring day, it’s a whole different story. I love it! It does smell a bit like walking into a steamy bathroom post-shower, as a poster above described it, but it feels in keeping with the character - a bit haughty and fey but masculine.
