Manus Dei (or the Typewriter Incident)

You really don't get the full effect of this one unless you're old enough to remember actual fabric ribbons and typewriters with keys that struck said ribbon, instead of plastic film ribbons and typeface balls. This is the smell of those fabric ribbons with the ink, the metal of the typewriter keys, and the oil that keeps them clacking away smoothly. It's missing the slight banana fragrance of a freshly cleaned typewriter, though, so it must be one that's been used for a while. Wow... nostalgia attack! (By the way, I like it!)

There's an intensely sharp note when it's wet that is definitely more sharp than most bay rum I've sniffed. There is bay rum in here, but the sharp note is a little offputting at first. Maybe a little like turpentine brush cleaner? But once it starts to dry down that sharp note fades, and it becomes a lovely bay rum/incense scent, with a good bit of dry sandalwood in it. It's not as dusty as the other 'old book' scents I've sniffed, and that makes me happy. I don't think I'll get a bottle, but I do like this and will probably use up my decant.

    Lord Ruthven

Definitely masculine cologne like others are saying, but also an edge of... brown paper kraft tape? ...no, I don't get it either.

    Pumpkin V (2009)

Pumpkin Spice Latte!!! Our local Starbucks knows me so well, the moment Pumpkin Spice is back they start making them for me. Now I can have that wonderful smell all year 'round! I just have to remember not to drink it... Bottle-worthy!

    Feeding The Dead

Wet on my skin, this is very much a sweet cornbread scent. It's very different. I don't get any of the beer yet, and I'm waiting for the incense... Later, this unfortunately developed the same odd sharp scent that Snow White does on me. I wish I knew what note it was that did that so I could avoid it. And there's a little incense now, but if I sniff too closely, sharpness.

    Devil's Night

I really, really want this to be like the description. I'm hoping it changes upon drydown. However, right now, while it's wet, I'm getting juicy fruit gum. Wut?

    Sunbird

Sweet, smoky, resinous, gloriously glowing Kyphi-esque scent! This is the perfect late summer scent -- warm, but with that burnished gold that signals the coming of autumn, when fields are starting to go golden with grain instead of green... This is so well blended I can't really pick out any one scent -- it's just a beautiful combination of warmth and richness and yum!

    How Doth the Little Crocodile

I really really want to like this. Unfortunately right now the cedar is amping, and I'm getting chocolate pencil shavings. I hope another application of it results in more mint and cocoa... Later, the cedar has calmed down, and it's smelling much better. I think I probably won't need a bottle though.

    Different smells/colors, same perfume

Re: Feast, I noticed the cocoa was VERY separated out in the decant I got, and refused to reblend when I rolled and rolled it. I ended up having to smoosh the bubbles of cocoa against the side of the imp with the imp wand. I suspect that the cocoa is a very heavy oil/particles that are very resistant to blending, and that there will be a lot of variations on scent out there from bottle to bottle. I think the only way to make sure every bottle came out the same would be to mix it with a spoon, smooshing the cocoa bubbles, and then immediately bottling it...

    Lawn Gnome

Lawn Gnome is very interesting so far. Need to figure out if I like it or not. It's kind of like the caramelized sugar crust of a Creme Brulee mixed with currants and cream... I like the caramelized sugar and currants and cream aspect a lot, but it's probably not a scent I would wear often. However, after wearing for a little while, it's trying to turn into pencil shavings on me, and I don't know why. There's no cedar in this... maybe it's the combination of patchouli and moss? And now the caramelized sugar, currant and cream is coming back... I'm confused...

    Astraphobia v1

Holy moly, this is bracing and cooling and would be a fantastic scent for a hot sticky day! I kind of wish it would stay the way it is when it's wet -- might try it in a scent locket to see if it works out. Wet, it's incredibly cool, brisk eucalyptus and maybe a little menthol/camphor. I love this -- it's almost an electric shock of chilly scent. Wakes you up and cools you right down. On my skin, the eucalyptus hangs on for a while and the menthol/camphor starts to back off, and after a while it starts to gain a slightly cucumber-ish edge. On dry-down, it becomes a little more floral, with only a little edge of eucalyptus left behind. It's a little sweet, a little herbal, and loses all of its brisk/chilly aspects. It's nice at this stage, but I really like the wet stage best.

    Creature Feature

I am so, so glad I bought a bottle of this unsniffed. It's just what I was hoping for! In the bottle it is very bright and green smelling -- it's a bit of a surprise at first because it's not what I'm expecting. That must be the radiation that makes the monsters so monstrous On skin, immediately it starts mellowing into a warm, soft musk that is definitely reminiscent of Hunter Moon 07 -- absolutely no complaints there, because I adore HM07! It isn't quite as sweet, because it's missing that fruity edge, but still very similar. And on drydown? It starts to edge into something reminiscent of Buck Moon, which is one of my absolute favourites! It's a warm, furry, comforting musk, with just an edge of powder. This is a happy, comfy scent (which may be a little odd considering the theme -- but then again there's something about Godzilla that has always made me absurdly happy, so there you go!). Definitely a winner!

    Lilith and the Jarocho

I nearly cried when I got this -- somehow the lid cracked, and a little bit of oil leaked. It wasn't a bad leak, and I replaced the cracked cap with a wand cap, but everything smelled of JASMINE. I wanted the scent to be all of its other elements and a whiff of jasmine, but it seemed like jasmine had gone on a murderous rampage and killed every other scent in the bottle... I put it aside for a week, hoping that maybe it just needed to settle, and just tried it again now. Never, ever make a snap decision after sniffing BPAL right out of the shipping box. I am so glad I kept it and gave it a second chance, because now the jasmine has backed off and the other scents have come forward. It is a bright, happy scent, and I think it perfectly evokes the image Beth gave us the story of. It's wonderfully complex. I can still smell the jasmine, but I can smell the lime, and I think I can smell a little bit of the tea from Dorian and some sweetness that is probably the Snake Oil or the vanilla. Wet in the bottle, the jasmine is still there, but there's a bright juicy lime scent that is just yummy! (I love lime!) If the jasmine continues to behave itself, this is a keeper and the perfect summer scent!

    Flowering Chrysanthemums

This scent starts out so nicely -- golden, warm, amber and sandalwood with a little floral edge to it. It really is beautiful and I have high hopes for it. Unfortunately, as it dries, it becomes a bit sour. It's the same thing that happens to Snow White on me. I'm not sure what it is that does it, but I think I'll stick with my decant. That way, it's enough for a scent locket, and it won't have that sour drydown. I hope.

    Psithyristês

Put me down as someone else who got the 'milled French soap' drydown. And when it was wet, it was too many flowers, beating me on the head. (But not as much as Pele...) Pity -- I was hoping for something a bit more spicy from the description...

    Dragon's Blood

I really wish I got the spicy/resiny/warm scent that a lot of others do, but to me, Dragon's Blood turns into straight-up Dove soap on me. I am very sad.

    Butter Rum Cookie

Butter, rum, and... pasta spices? I don't get it. There's definitely something oregano-ish/pepper-ish in this. It's mixing with the cookie smell and it's just not working on me. Oh well...

    The Convocation

Oooh... first non-floral BPAL to be total fail on me. I really want the scent that Tramp got, because what I smelt in the imp was the men's cologne department poured into a bucket. Once I put it on, I got that, plus the men were all sweaty now. And their gentlemen's club has some mildewed ceiling tiles somewhere... It's not fair.

    The Miller's Daughter

Rose and straw, with a little sweetness from the amber and a little tang from the tears and the gold -- this is LOVELY! I've fallen madly in love with hay scents this year, and already have two bottles of Hay Moon and bought the entire Pumpkin Plunder so I could have Needle in a Haystack, but this is just as good in a different, brighter gold kind of way. It's warmer than Haystack, which is probably the amber. I think I need a bottle of this in the next order! ETA: I should say, I get very little pumpkin in Haystack -- if you do, you may find my comparison a bit off...

    Famine

Sleek black tea, tobacco leaf, frankincense, lilac, and white musk. Wet and when first applied, this has a lovely sweet (I smell honey) black tea/tobacco/spicy scent that as someone else said is reminiscent of Chergui. Then it dries down, into something rather unpleasantly sour. I do get the vomit edge to it, but it's almost more like a very, very stale ashtray. I'll try it in my clocket at some point, but this is definitely not something to wear. And now I'm heading to wash it off...

    Thanatopsis

I got this as a frimp with a purchase, and in the vial it's rather piney with a hint of (ew) vetiver. However, on my skin it turns into something deliciously dark and resiny/musky, and reminds me of Minotaur. I've managed to find 4 bottles of Minotaur so far, but if I use them up and need a replacement, a bottle of this might be a good idea. Mmmmm...

    Namaste

This starts out as intense, glorious lemongrass on me, with a tiny hint of rose and possibly sandalwood. After a while, though, it dries down into pencil shavings. I'm disappointed -- I was hoping this would be the cedar that works on me and that the lemongrass would stay strong. I wonder if it would work in a scent locket...

    Different smells/colors, same perfume

Mine is definitely not pale yellow. It's pretty orange. I got it over a year ago (I believe it was the same color when I got it first though). When did you get each imp? The orange is a pretty orange! They both smell good, though One was one I just bought from someone, and the other was a frimp I just got with a bottle I bought from someone, so I don't actually know when their first owners got them. Sorry!

    Different smells/colors, same perfume

Okay... can anyone tell me what the normal colour of Death On a Pale Horse is? I have two imps -- one is a rather pale yellow oil, and the other is much more orange. I'm too clogged with allergies right now to really tell how different they smell, but I think they do smell different, too. They both have Lab imp labels, so I'm supremely confused. Did it get reformulated at some point?

    The East

I'm not a lover of florals, and this is a GORGEOUS scent to me. It's light, fresh, breezy, and just a touch sweet and flowery. It's a warm breeze blowing over fields of flowers, swirling around you as the sun shines down and gives you that happy sort-of-sleepy feeling. The tea keeps it from being too sweet, and it's just a lovely scent to me. If you are a lover of florals, rush out and buy a bottle now -- you won't be sorry!
