The Lab was invited to Dragon Con's workshop programming this year, so we'll be presenting an hourlong session that Friday (hosted by me!) that's all about using fragrance as a creative prompt. Hoping to do a Summerween live-sniff soon, but in case that takes a minute, figured I'd sketch out some impressions of this scent, which I have been DYING to smell. In the bottle I'm getting full-bodied Neapolitan freeze-dried astronaut ice cream sandwich, including chocolate wafer. There is a scuzz of smoke floating around it which is easily overpowered by the sweetness, creaminess, and nostalgic familiarity of these classic flavors combined all in one scoop. On the skin I immediately get a jolt of sticky tartness from the labdanum, and the clove grows fangs. It's both darker and warmer than I was hoping for in an ice cream scent, decidedly polluted, like that same sandwich found underneath a bar table at a goth club. Not bad, but more of a traffic jam of notes, right at the instant when I was expecting smoothness. And yet, and yet! Within a few minutes, everything settles down and re-blends itself into a rich, creamy concoction that is recognizably Neapolitan, topped with a drizzle of angst. The clove steadily becomes more noticeable as "clove" than as "smoke" which helps impart some of the desired coolness, although the gummy labdanum still suggests a treat that is actively melting. I think the labdanum clings tightly to the strawberry component, and the clove to the chocolate, leaving the vanilla to fend for itself in a smaller supporting role. It seems like from a distance the clove might be the most distinctive and recognizable note, appealingly ensconced in a murky dessert-y sweetness, but up close I can still pick out the individual flavors. All in all, this is totally great! I was promised a Neapolitan ice cream perfume with a funky attitude, and that's what I got. My childhood sweet tooth is happy, my teenage disaffection feels SEEN and VALIDATED. Two scoops way up!

I actually rushed to go test this because of @auraysu's review, since I have been exploring a newfound fondness for grapey scents (officially declared or otherwise). I dunno if my mind would've gone there without reading this, but it did now! I can track the Lab's moonflower and datura notes (the latter being a bit purpley), tempered here by the woods and incense smoke. It's reminding me of old school GC dark florals like The Caterpillar and Death Cap, sweetened up with apple in a way that keeps the drama of the other notes from skewing too heavy or tragic. Very apt transliteration of the painting!

For he seemed to me again like a king, Like a king in exile, uncrowned in the underworld, Now due to be crowned again. A sinuous leather variant of BPALs Snake Oil. Only side-by-side with Snake Oil can I tell the difference between these in the bottle. It really was appropriate to name this after the snake's skin -- the leather wraps around the familiar blend like a sheath. And it's a grower, constricting slowly until it just might become the thing someone notices about the scent if they just happened to catch it in passing. It also nicely amps the woods in Snake Oil, which probably don't get enough love. If you have a man in your life who loves Snake Oil but it's too sweet for him to wear, he will probably be unstoppable with this.

Hound is a great suggestion for this. My test lately for whether something counts as a true "jasmine" scent is whether my sweetie Ashton calls it out -- he really dislikes jasmine. And this was definitely one that he preferred me not to wear around him TOMIE doesn't bother him, as the jasmine is very smoothly blended into the floral aspect of the scent. Same with Caligari A-Go-Go, which has a woozy jasmine component that I find nice and strong and nocturnal, but I think the other notes (cotton blossom, dirt, petitgrain, tobacco) throw him off the track.

Hi everyone. We've received so many questions about how tariffs and supply-chain issues will affect BPAL's production. How to answer honestly without stoking unnecessary panic? I'll try: We really, really, don't know. 😬 So if there are any fave BPAL products that you consider personal necessities which are *currently in stock*, please understand that we're still getting a sense of what we WILL and WON'T be able to restock, or how much it will cost. We appear to be heading into a component drought that will dictate our output for the time being. The last thing we want is for folks to feel pressured into panic-buying, but we also feel a responsibility to loyal customers who've depended on the same products year after year, or would be disproportionately affected by changes in price that reflect component scarcity. I wish I could offer specifics in terms of which exact ingredients are causing issues, but again: we don't know the extent of this yet. Some of our suppliers have preemptively jacked their prices or just canceled our orders altogether. Communication is proving difficult. We're patiently, methodically doing our best to keep our supply flowing -- holding our breaths the entire time, like every other small biz out there. The prices and inventory currently listed on our website reflect what we KNOW we can provide for now. Beyond here, we'll all be in the same boat of waiting and seeing together. On Saturdays Odd Mart hosts a regular "Drink and Draw" event which is free for all, with refreshment sales benefiting MIRAC: Minnesota Immigrant Rights Action Committee.
