  1. Be strong Foodie!

Somacat - You could also try Mag Mel or Roadhouse for bright, green scents. Roadhouse really wasn't boozy on me. Jasmine Cottage is also a really lovely green floral, and don't let the name scare you off. There are so many other notes, the jasmine really isn't obvious.

For Tombstone - you might try Stimulating Sassafras Strengthener. It smells like root beer barrel candy, and I adore it even though I'm usually not into candy smells.

For Kumiho - Baobhan Sith and Embalming Fluid both have the white tea with the sharp, citrusy notes.

  2. I'm not sure if this is the right thread, but here's my question...

Snake Oil is out of stock at the lab right now. I'm going to order O and The Lion and I REALLY want a bottle of Snake Oil (I've been reading that a lot of people love it aged... I fell head over heels in love with the fresh imp I got!) but like I said, it's out of stock. What GC scent do you guys think is the MOST SIMILAR to Snake Oil?

Vixen is somewhat close b/fruitier. Saytr is similar b/more masculine to my nose. And of course, all the Snake Pit scents from CD have it in them, b/those aren't GC. I dunno, if you love Snake Oil and know you want it, I'd say wait till it's back, b/then, patience was never one of my virtues.

  3. You might also look on Black Phoenix's Etsy site for discontinued bottles. The company destashes their vintage bottles, and of course, there's always E-bay.

For GC recs, I second Deep in Earth. It smells like roses and damp earth. Jasmine Cottage is pretty and equal parts floral and green to my nose. No earth though.

  4. Beer from the Marshwoman's Brewery was very strange on me. A weird mix of foody and swampy that had a light floral edge in drydown. Not my thing, but oddly pleasant. Druid reminded me of boiled spinach the first time I smelled. Later, I got more floral and berry notes. Definately still had a dark green dampness to it.

  5. So this is a really fun retro frimp I just got with my order. Thank you kindly BPAL!

I sniffed the imp before I checked the notes, and my first impression was "weeeeird..." Then I got cucumber and something decidedly vegetal, I wasn't sure what. Well, turns out it was veggies! In the imp this smells like fresh, cool salad.

On my skin, it is mostly cucumber scent, with a freshness that almost comes across as an aquatic white floral. It's crisp and clean. After a while it becomes a bit soapy on me, but it's still pleasant. A very nice spring/summer scent, and glad I got to try it, but I probably wouldn't wear it much, so I shall pass it along for veggie lovers perusal.

  6. This starts out all nose tingling mint and pine in the bottle. Pine usually works well for me. On my skin though, my nemesis, cedar, quickly makes itself known. It's blending with the oak moss to make a musty old attic smell that's certainly not what I was hoping for. Eventually, the cedar starts to fade into the other notes and I get something that smells a lot like Cathode but a bit darker. I like Cathode, b/the cedar in this is just mucking things up for me. Glad I got to try it though.

  7. I get looooots of sweet fruitiness in the imp, mostly banana and pineapple. On my skin, the pineapple really takes over and the chile starts to come out. At first I can distinctly smell the chile, but it smooths out till it just becomes a bit of warmth in the background. This is a sweet, fizzy, and warm pineapple scent on my skin. It's not bad, but it smells artificial to me, like pineapple soda or candy. Not my favorite fruit medley.

  8. I got this with a load of imps recently from a forumite. I have no idea how old my imp is, but I find Peitho lovely.

On me, it is a soft, silvery floral with a similar vibe as The Phantom Wooer. It makes me think of a clandestine twilight garden.

I pick up mostly lily (softer and less perfumey than the white variety), musk, and mellow sandalwood in the background. The jasmine is soft and just adds some depth to the lily. I get some vanilla in dry down, but it reads more as just sweetness.

I don't know if it's b/c my imp is aged or if this just works with my chemistry, jasmine and sandalwood both like me, but I really like this. It isn't soapy on me, and its very calming. A shame it's discontinued. :-(

  9. Celestia - You might try Aristocratic Couple - it's got bourbon vanilla, a similar apricot note as Gattapefur, and cardamom that adds some sophistication. It also smells jammy and delicious!

Bard has honey, vanilla and musk, and is lovely. Edith has a beautiful vanilla in it. It was also a "foodie" scent that actually worked for me when most don't.

For deeper scents, (keep in mind - I love vetiver, patchouli, ect...) Depart Pour Le Sabbat - Bourbon vanilla, sweet red patchouli, oudh, goat's milk accord, and white honey. or Blood Kiss - Lush, creamy vanilla and the honey of the sweetest kiss smeared with the vital throb of husky clove, swollen red cherries, but darkened with the vampiric sensuality of vetiver, soporific poppy and blood red wine, and a skin-light pulse of feral musk.

Edit: Lucille is also a really deep, complex floral backed by amber w/ fruity notes. It's very different from the White Witch, b/ maybe has the same tone.

  10. Honey - Have you tried the GC scents Tlazolteotl and Good? I'm pretty sure Tlaz has the same cocoa note as Boomslang along with copal and some other unusual notes. It's very different and worth a sniff. Good is light and sweet and has layering possibilities. Possibly the Yule Lad scent Giljaguar? Sweet creamy coconut w/ a really nice, smooth cinnamon.

Joopjoop - Sorry. I really can't think of anything I've tried recently in the LE's that reminds me of your favorites. :-(. I'm curious what others say though. I'm a big fan of Absinthe myself.

Edit: Actually, you might see if you can get a decant of Faiza, Lady of Serpents. 51 had a sort of fruitiness with its sweetness tempered by soft, dry resins to my nose, and Faiza sort of has that feel though the notes are different. It's a very complex scent too.

  11. I looove this. I definately get copal in the bottle and when this is initially wet. I also get lots of frankincense which is pretty awesome, b/c frankincense almost always goes to baby powder on me, but this actually smells like the little chunks of resin I burn on my coal incense burner and it stays that way. I'm picking up the Snake Oil mostly as a sweetened patchouli. I don't really get any vanilla. On me this is dry, but not powdery, earthy incense w/ a metallic tang. It's very brassy smelling and rich, and I can totally get a king cobra vibe. This would totally work for a guy too. Jeebus. My bottle list GROWS.

  12. Woah! That's some vetiver ya got there Mr. Death Adder, sir. Smoky and dark with a hint of vanillic snake oil and dark incensey coconut. Yumalicious. I bet this will age well too. I agree with an earlier reviewer's comparison to Goblin, but I'd mix it with a dash of Prurience. A prurient goblin? Oh dear.

Anywho, I really like this. On me, vetiver takes the stage on dry down, but the other notes stick around with supporting roles. My friend tried some on, and it went very coconutty on her, but it was still dark and smooth, not foodie or sweet. I want to slather my husband in this and see what happens. I want to slather everything in this and see what happens. Mmmmmmm...

  13. I am usually not a foodie fan, nor am I *gasp* a huge fan of Snake Oil. I'm kind of hard core on my incense smells, and while Snake Oil is pleasant, to my nose, it lacks the oomph of other incense blends I prefer. That said, all the hoopla around Boomslang made it a must try.

I actually really like it in the bottle. I can smell all four notes, and the cocoa smells like what's found in Tezcatlipoca, a favorite of mine. It isn't foodie, and the rice milk is an interesting note I'd like to see more of. Unfortunately, all I get when I put this on my skin is plain ol' Snake Oil. During dry down there is a brief point when the rice milk struggles to the surface, but it quickly dissipates. Ah well.

  14. Ooooh I like this, and how.....

LOTS of champaca. This actually smells stronger of champaca to me than the recent Golden Champaca Single Note, which is great, cause I looooove me some champaca! There's also a rich sweetness I initially thought might be vanilla or honey, but later realized was the sugar cane. I smell the Snake Oil, but it's not the star of the show. I think it's probably what's deepening/strengthening the champaca. Sometimes frankincense goes baby powdery on me, b/ this one is behaving quite well. This has a good wear length on me.

This is delightfully sticky, sweet, resiny, champaca goodness. It's rich without being heavy, sweet without being cloying. Lovely lovely. Definitely a bottle contender.

  15. Champagne and tobacco notes rarely work for me, which is why I scratched Perversion off my wish list. The lab knew better and frimped me. This is lovely on me and completely different from the many GC scents I've smelled.

There's a hint of fruitiness, but it's subdued, almost like apricot preserves or an infusion in the alcohol. The leather is soft and supple, the tobacco smooth and more like pipe tobacco. The tonka has the warmth and comfort of vanilla, but it's own unique aroma, and a sweetness a man could easily wear.

When I was little, I would go to a high class pipe shop with my dad. There were gleaming rows of glass and wooden cabinets housing crystal decanters and expensive liquors, a walk in humidor, and counters with canister upon canister of different pipe tobaccos that I was constantly opening and sniffing. The place smelled fabulous and Perversion smell just like it. Definitely a keeper.

  16. I'm neutral on almond. It's usually sweet and golden on me and it depends on what it's paired with. Bordello almond was even sweeter on me and less rich, and the plum, usually wet, luscious, and a fav note, was sugary-gummy plum candy. The mixture was tooth achingly sweet, flat, and cheap teenager on me. (Sorry to all those Bordello fans out there. Blame it on my chemistry.)

So I guess if it has the same plum and almond notes, I should leave it alone? I was hoping maybe the plum would be richer and the red musk and chocolate dark enough to give it more body. :-/

  17. BPAL's wine notes tend to go sweet, bubble-gummy grape on me, hence, when I tried Lilith, instead of dark, sinister, and seductive, I got bright, syrupy roses. Boo.

But to my delight, Pinot Noir agrees with me! This is what I wanted from Lilith. This has the dark, rich robustness of a wine deep in flavor and rich in tanins. In the imp I smell wine, rose, sharp sandalwood w/a dash of jasmine floating on top. As it dries, the wine settles, the sandalwood softens, and I get a resinous, slightly powdery rose, with a dash of dark juiciness. Think femme fatale with a black dress, burgundy wine, and a bottle of poison in her purse. I would strongly recommend this for lovers of scents in the vein of Lucille Sharpe, Nefertiti, and Spellbound..

Edited to add Nyx to the list of similar scents, except OW is a little darker and juicier.
