    Meskhenet, the Vulture Maiden

In the bottle: church incense, a floral I don’t recognize and something a little woody. On my skin: mostly frankincense and orris too. Not a combination I’m really fond of. After a couple of hours: still lots of orris, but it becomes a little more floral too. It reminds me of Midnight Mass but it’s a little less heavy on the incense. Verdict: I’m not one for frankincense.

    Arachnina, The Spider Girl (2006)

In the bottle: it smells like some 70’s perfume (Opium, maybe). Not the same kind as Stardust though. There’s patchouli, but not the usual patchouli-curse. And it has a very lovely red colour. On my skin: very perfumey, very musky, very feminine. Some patchouli, but a soft, feminine patchouli. I couldn’t tell why but I think this is the right scent for a spider-girl. I can’t smell any blackcurrant and I regret it. After a couple of hours: all floral. Mostly lilies. Very feminine, very classical… Verdict: I love it but not for me. That’s the kind of perfume I would imagine my mum (or any glamorous mother) to wear. But not me.

    Priala, the Human Phoenix (2006)

In the bottle: very strong, very dark, very masculine. Cinnamon and tobacco smoke. On my skin: applied with tons of caution. Cinnamon and something incensey (myrrh, I suppose). Not unpleasant. After a couple of hours: some more smoke, and something that I think, is myrrh. Cinnamon has faded away. Verdict: okay but not my kind of blends.

    Ugh

Very medicinal : lemon and eucalyptus. I tried it when I had sore ankles one day, put some “ugh” on before going to bed, and it gave me the impression to get some relief. Placebo effect, maybe, but as long as it works and the scent is not annoying, I’m not complaining.

    Grr

Fresh, clear mint. Lovely! I adore this smell. I don’t know if it works against headaches because *touches wood* I didn’t get any headache lately, but it will certainly work as a comfort scent anyway.

    Oof

My god, it smells exactly like Vicks Vapo Rub (mostly eucalyptus)! But it does work as a sinus relief stuff. Still, I wouldn’t want to smell like that if I don’t have a serious cold. I might still consider a bottle because, hey, it works!

    Fire Pig

In the bottle: fruity fruity fruit. They're all mixing together, and I couldn't single any note out. On my skin: a very lovely blend of citrus, something sugared, and tons of mandarin. I like it to be sure. After a couple of hours: after being fruity for quite a long time, it ends up more classically 'perfumey' and a little floral. Verdict: lovely, but I have so many scents, I'm not sure I'll keep the bottle.

    Enraged Groundhog Musk

In the bottle: buttery chocolate with some hazelnut (where does this come from?) On my skin: butter, chocolate and cardamom. it's quite pleasant, it doesn't burn, but it's still a tiny bit too foody for me. After a couple of hours: the chocolate ends up in honey. I know honey is not listed, but I'd swear that's what I smell: the very typical (overpowering on me) Bpal honey. Verdict: not really my thing.

    Chintamani-Dhupa

In the bottle: fruity, exotic sandalwood. On my skin: Incense all over. Fresh, clean incense, while I was expecting something smokey. I don’t mind smelling like that, but that’s pretty much it, I’m not so keen either. After a couple of hours: now this is a morpher. It’s all floral now… therefore, definitely not for me. Verdict: no.

    Dolce Stil Nuovo

In the bottle: lavender vanilla with the tiniest trace of rose. So far, it’s heavenly! On my skin: lavender vanilla. Very pretty, very girly… there’s some white musk too. I love it!!! After a couple of hours: sugared vanilla and lavender… it makes me think of fresh linen too (and that’s a very good thing). Very feminine and light purple. Verdict: I need more than my ½ imp. I don’t need a bottle because this is not the kind of smell I’d wear on a daily basis, but I’ll go looking for one decant or two.

    Svadhinaopatika

What a name! I hope I don’t fall in love, I’ll never be able to remember it. Reading the ingredients, I don’t think I will like it anyway. In the bottle: smokey incense and sandalwood. It smells like inside a catholic church. On my skin: More sandalwood, amber and incense. After a couple of hours: honey is amping up (Bpal honey develops like crazy on my skin), but it cannot totally kill the sandalwood. Verdict: quite pretty, but not the kind of things I’m wearing. This is one of the first times when honey is civilized and would be wearable though.

    Thalassa, the Galapagos Mermaid

In the bottle: aquatic, fresh and clean On my skin: ooh, nice. A little salty, still very aquatic, with distinctive seaweeds. After a couple of hours: doesn’t morph much. Still a very clear smell of ocean. I don’t get any jasmine but there’s the tiniest almond showing up… it goes very well with the seaweed (to my surprise!). It has quite a good throw, especially considering aquatics are often faint on me. Verdict: it’s gorgeous. Now the question is: am I going to wear it? I really like aquatics, but I noticed I never think of wearing them… still, I’m pretty much in love with Thalassa!

    Zarita, the Doll Girl (2006)

In the bottle: weird and heavy! Caramel with some orange blossom… it smells like some chocolate we have over here. On my skin: burnt plastic (aka caramel) eats everything else. I suppose what I take for caramel is sugared cream… anyway, all those foody stuff end in burnt plastic on me, so, I don’t really care for them. After a couple of hours: burnt plastic and pepper. I never got any flower out of this. Verdict: I didn’t expect Zarita to be this kind of foody fragrance at all… but like all the other foody stuffs, it is not for me.

    Coral Snake (2006)

In the bottle: orange and apple. Terribly fruity… I even get some banana! On my skin: even more fruity. Very ripe and juicy… it’s not totally dissimilar from Shango, if you ask me. Bright yellow, summer scent. After a couple of hours: it gets spicier (hello Snake Oil!) and a little more floral… still very tropical. Verdict: very well done.

    Green Tree Viper

This is the one I was waited for… green tea and mint… I hope it won’t disappoint me like Gennivre did. In the bottle: tons of mint! Bright, powerful, sugared mint… yummy! On my skin: honestly, I only get mint so far. No tea, no bergamot… but mint being my all-time favourite, I certainly won’t complain. After a couple of hours: now I get some tea… I’d have said ‘earl grey’ and it makes sense as bergamot is listed as a note. Mostly, it’s still a wonderful sweet mint. Just everything I like. (No Snake Oil at all, by the way). Verdict: true love!

    Habu

Ouch. Bamboo is NOT my friend, and I’m not a fan of anything woody. In the bottle: tons and tons of juicy bamboo. I get the usual bubblegum reminiscence bamboo always gives me. So far, not good. On my skin: tons of fresh, bright green, juicy bamboo. There’s some kind of wood underneath, but far, far, far behind and totally drowned in the overwhelming bamboo. After a couple of hours: still wet, but some other notes finally emerge. Black musk mostly. It gets better, but pretty much masculine. Verdict: no.

    Cottonmouth

I’m quite afraid it will be a cloying floral (hello narcissus!) but let’s see. In the bottle: very fresh, nearly green floral. Not at all what I was expecting. So far, it seems perfect for springtime. On my skin: a perfect floral springtime blend. A real bouquet of different flowers, but nothing cloying or nauseating. It makes me feel clean, it makes me feel fresh, it makes me feel like smiling. After a couple of hours: it gets a bit more perfumey as calla lily shows itself. It’s still okay though. Verdict: I don’t wear much florals but if I had to pick up one, Cottonmouth would be the one!
  18. Emma2403

    Temple Viper

In the bottle: I don’t recognize much. It’s pretty sour, and I can smell frankincense if I try quite hard. On my skin: it gets sweet and bit fruity (where the hell does that come from?). There’s still some frankincense, but it plays very quiet while it usually amps up like crazy on me. After a couple of hours: it gets more floral. I can’t really recognize Snake Oil as I get no spiciness. Frankincense seems to be gone as well. Verdict: not my type of scents.

    Saw-Scaled Viper

I’m quite sure this one will be too intense for me, but let’s hope for a good surprise! In the bottle: very strong cinnamon and cassia. Yuk, I don’t like that. On my skin: cinnamon, cassia and something salted (is this the way ginger smells ? I have no idea). I still don’t like it, I feel like a cinnamon cake, made out of salted butter (yes, there’s something buttery too… it made me think of Jack, this is the same butter note). After a couple of hours: it has a terribly strong throw, believe me. It’s still mainly cinnamon to me, but it starts burning, so I’ll take it off. Verdict: I feel nauseous after scrubbing it off, I guess that’s enough to say it’s not for me.

    Death Adder

In spite of the dreaded vetiver, I had high expectations about this one… coconut, vanilla and opoponax, it could very well be heaven in a bottle. In the bottle: the first time I sniffed it, I thought “eek”, but it was very early in the morning, so I let it rest for a while. The second time, I had a wave of the wonderful Bpal coconut (for the record, I used to hate coconut but Bpal note is just delicious). On my skin: sugared vanilla and coconut. Very, very pretty, very, very girlie. Not a hint of vetiver so far. After a couple of hours: it gets… dirtier. But in the good way! It’s damned sexy! I still recognize vanilla and coconut, but now there’s something more… probably the Indonesian stuff in original Snake Oil. The more I wear it, the more I like it. Verdict: yes, yes, yes!! I have to try and combine it with snake charmer, I’m quite sure it could be marvellous!
  21. Emma2403

    King Cobra (2006)

In the bottle: it’s the very first snake in which I recognize Snake Oil so easily. And yes, there are tons of frankincense as well. On my skin: even more frankincense and spices too (maybe copal? I'm not sure I would recognize copal anyway). After a couple of hours: it gets more resinous and drier too. I’m having problems to describe this scent as it seems to change every two minutes. Verdict: it’s beautiful, but I don’t like frankincense enough to imagine I could wear that often.
  22. Emma2403

    Banded Sea Snake (2006)

In the bottle: it screams “I wanna be worn by a guy”. Oakmoss and something marine, that makes me think of Tempest. On my skin: it’s really too masculine for me. It’s very aquatic, a bit mossy too… it’s very nice, I just wish I had a guy to try it on. I can smell some similarities with Cthulhu as well. After a couple of hours: it’s nearly all gone… the only thing left is some vanilla (coming from the original Snake Oil, I reckon). Verdict: it would probably be wonderful on a man who likes aquatic blends. But not on me.
  23. Emma2403

    Asp Viper (2006)

In the bottle: oh waw, it smells just like amaretto. And while I love drinking amaretto, I’m not sure I want to smell like it!! On my skin: rich, creamy almond. Some spices maybe. But no mandarin. Where’s my mandarin, dammit?!! I smell like a marzipan cake, now! After a couple of hours: ah, I get some citrus now… it marries very well with the marzipan, er, I mean, almond head note. Verdict: I have to try again. I wish the mandarin would show a little earlier, because the first hour of marzipan meets amaretto meets almond cake is a bit too sweet for me.
  24. Emma2403

    Australian Copperhead (2006)

I have no idea what Açaí berries may smell like (or taste, for that matters), but let’s go. In the bottle: it’s all fruity. Blue fruits. A tiny bit chemical like blueberries can smell as well. On my skin: still tons of fruits, plus neroli. And maybe vanilla, somewhere, in the background. After a couple of hours: amber and vanilla (I wouldn’t really say it’s smoked though). No recognizable snake oil. Most of the berries have faded away. Verdict: it’s a weird scent, it morphs a lot…I’m not convinced.

    Boomslang

In the bottle : loads and loads and loads of cocoa. And something else, a bit bitter. On my skin: it’s nearly cocoa Single Note. It makes me think of the hot cocoa I drank when I was a kid. There’s not any hint of burnt tyre (cocoa usually does that on me), and it’s actually pretty nice. After a couple of hours: it gets spicier, I can distinctively recognize Snake Oil now. I’m not a real fan of Snake Oil but combined with this cocoa, it gets quite amazing. Verdict: I’m not sure I’d wear it often (I’m no foody girl), but I’m quite impressed, it’s very special.
