    'Pink' scents

Totally agree with Mouses long and sad tale.. that actually popped into my mind before I even read Aviatrix's reply. Also agree with Mouse Circus and Jailbait. MLAST being a soft nuzzly faded pink, and the other two being Barbie pink ETA: As for non-GC: Serotine Bat is also semi-pink, to me, along with Loli-goth, and Velvet Unicorn.

    Totentanz

Very similar to Our Lady Of Pain. But take out the lavender, and add a dark spiciness. No orchid is listed, but I do smell the same 'black orchid' note from OLOP. This does have a darker musk though, and an extra dark herbal/spice kick.

    La Lugubre Gondola

Primarily resiny sweet benzoin, with a helping of powdered herbal labdanum. Because the benzoin is so prominent, my experience was much the same as OctoberGwen's, in that it really stomped out the harshness labdanum can bring. Although it is still present.

    Und wir Dachten der Toten

Und is an interesting mix between So Below and Serotine Bat, on me. The patch is very very mild here, the vanilla and amber being the most prominent notes for me, and what reminds me of Serotine. The raw coffee is very understated, and along with the spices, almost has a cardamom feel. Its this fuzzy/dusty green spice quality that reminds me a lot of So Below. I really like almost all of this blend... But like OctoberGwen, I wish the bourbon vanilla was less prominent.

    Sugared incense

Definitely agree with 'All Souls'. It is a perfect mix of incense and cake. Not too foodie, and not too sharp. Just seriously perfect. I ordered 2 bottles myself, and have a swap out for an additional years version

    Silkybat Hair Gloss

This smells like Spun Sugar Spectre Bath Oil, but with a drop or two of patchouli. The patchouli is soooo mild here. That said, I do like it. But this is not at all what I had in mind. I havent tried the Patch and Amber HG, so cant compare to that.. but I honestly hardly smell any patchouli here. I'm going to let me bottle settle a bit and retest tomorrow. Okay. I see it now. Everyone was right. This is THE shit. The patchouli was super light right from the bottle, and it still is a bit lighter than I was expecting.. but it is a lot stronger than from my initial impression. ... Which may have been skewed by the huffing of some Tricksy earlier in the day.. or maybe skewed by testing straight from the mailbox. IDK. But now, it smells light yet rich, and delicious.

    So Below

I have to borrow a bit from SSDB's review. It does very much remind me of a luxurious body butter. That dark coconut and amber and beautiful patchouli. Not to mention the copal, and cardamom. Deliciously rich and slightly golden, and just reminds me of gentle warmth and mildly sweet earthy resins. After finally breaking down and testing So Below, I am equally glad and sad it is nowhere near BB. Much more similar to FMAFMWP. Although, definitely better than FMAFMWP was on me. I like what the green cardamom brings to the scent, and of course my beloved coconut. I can't believe I'm saying this, but i think i might have actually liked this better without the amber. Or if it was a more benzoin-y amber maybe. The labdanum aspect of the amber accord used just doesnt mix well with the patchouli on my skin... Well, not as well as hemp and black vanilla, that is Definitely still a keeper. And a blend I will love. I'll probably even make a large dent in my bottle.

    Hatta

I totally agree with Trickster. Its pretty much a slightly spiced up Quincey Morris, sans the pear. The spice is even quite mild on me. I like this, but it is a bit simplistic, and the leather is not quite as roughed up as I like, although it is still rougher than most

    Lich's Laboratory Atmosphere Spray

This is a mossy cross between Perversion and Red Lantern. If you like either of those, and/or missed out on getting a Red Lantern Atmo and/or would like to experience either of those scents with a healthy dollop of moss and loam, then this is something you will probably like. While I think the Red Lantern atmo is pure perfection already, this really is a nice option for an earthier and more masculine vibe, with that same exotic, and spicy incens-y opium den feel. Definitely Red Lantern's sexy brother

    Dungeon Atmosphere Spray

Puddin! Why have you done this to me??? I try my hardest to support you guys (and goblins), and spread the word of the amazing olfactory experiences you give to me, and through so many different mediums. And what do I get? A goblin squirt of the glorious Dungeon. A scent that has been Dc'd since 2008! And one that combines the BEST parts of Le Pere Fouettard, Bow and Crown, and CC: Male. Are you happy Puddin. Does this make you happy!? A grown man crying for lack of Dungeon atmo spray! You look at me and see what you have done!! Hehe, but seriously y'all. This stuff is soo good! It is my favorite type of leather (from the above mentioned blends), and the musk... oh god, the musk is like..perfection. I swear there is vanilla in this spray too. And no merlot at all.. maybe the blood-type merlot.... but even that I dont really get. I think its more of the iron fillings from CC: male. GDI this stuff is so good.

    Pursue Rabbit

This is a very simple, yet deep blend. It is sugared orange blossom, and soft incense. In that order. I can pick out most of the other notes if I huff.. and consciously think about them. But the big players, that are most present to me, are a delicious sugar-crusted orange blossom, and slightly acrid/watery incense. I normally have a very 'meh' reaction to orange blossom, but here, it really does feel like the slightly sharp incense has cut that (usually) over-heady aspect of the OB, and while I wouldnt say this is cloyingly sweet, I definitely feel there is a candied vibe to the orange blossom. Almost like the taste/smell of eating an orange blossom macaron. A light crisp sweetness. Mmm. I'm pretty sure I will be looking for at least 1 back-up.

    BPAL Scents with Lemon notes

Dorian is my favorite lemon-y blend. .. even though lemon is not a listed note at all. For some reason the tea comes across as lemony to my nose, and as its not really lemon, there are no 'plege' or other lemon-cleaner associations with it for me. Next fave is, Skytyping with Chemtrails. A deliciously fluffy lemon scent

    Orange Blossom and Neroli Recs

I love the idea of neroli ( the warm, diffusive, almost musky, and heady flouffy characteristics).. but unfortunately for me, it almost always is so persistent, that it causes sinus inflammation. If it plays second-fiddle in a blend however, it works well for me.

    Slipping Into Madness

Fresh, this smelled very heavily of vetiver. Dark rooty earth, and smoky. It did clean up a bit as it dried into more of a patch blend. Surprisingly a patch blend that is not too dirty. Although not directly present through any of the dry-down, the sage and zdravetz are just there enough to barely brighten up the musk and patch. Wet, this was far too smokey for me, but dry, it is a nice darkish, yet clean patchouli scent.

    Éclat

ÉCLAT A vivacious blend of green tea, osmanthus, pomelo flower, white musk, and verbena. Why can you not be bought!?!?! This smells amazing!!! In the bottle I get light, crisp and fresh green notes, with a nice little bit of sweetness. On my skin, the tea and verbena really take over.. which is really quite nice. This dries down to an irishy floral, that actually does not smell like soap on me (unlike most white flowers). I'm guessing the pomelo flower? Either way it is very nice, and not soapy lol. My favorite part of this scent is the first hour or so, when bright green tea is the main scent. Mmmm, it smelled amazing!

I smelt this today, can anyone recommend a blend?

Maybe Sin with Tobacco Honey? Or Sin by itself might even do the trick? Sin: Thoroughly corrupted: amber, sandalwood, black patchouli and cinnamon. On me its a dark, sweet, and spicy scent.. so while it doesnt have tobacco or honey, it does cover that dark and sweet aspect at least.

Allergy Questions, Allergies and other reactions to oils

I'd like to agree with some of the others saying that you might be applying too heavily, when it comes to the nauseous portion. For me when testing from imps, I swipe once on one wrist, and gently dab my wrists together. Thats it. A couple of scents I slather, but like others have mentioned, only if I know I love that scent, and how it reacts on my body. As for not liking the popular blends, it actually makes sense, because like you said, this is your first time trying perfume oils, and of all the perfume oil sellers, this one is the farthest away from mainstream perfume. Most of us bpal-fanatics, I think, were not satisfied with mainstream perfumes, and therefore these very different blends are really popular for us. So, if you have been perfectly satisfied with mainstream or designer perfumes, it would make sense that you would lean towards more traditional blends. Certainly dont loose hope though. Beth has hundreds of blends that are definitely of the more 'perfume-y' side, and definitely should be easy to obtain through swaps... especially since you have a lot of the popular ones to trade with

    Mopsfledermaus

I tend to dislike sugary ginger scents, so this one was pretty much an inst-fail. But! If you like the sound of the notes, you will most likely like the perfume. It starts quite heavy on the spices, definitely more of a spice-market scent than a craft-store, so bonus there. The ginger is quite strong though, and the brown sugar as well. Hours later, the musk is more present, and does help round out the scent, but the first hour or 2 is just so heavy on the sugary ginger, that its just too much for me.

    The Court of Honor

Holy Batman, this is a very woody cologne. It doesn't smell like sandalwood at ALL on me.. more like birch, or ash.. very much a whiter and more sour wood. And without any true sweet notes, the addition of the white amber, tobacco, and musk just further push it into cologne territory- for me. It does sweeten a bit as the wood note dies down, but only slightly, and not enough to shake my association with eau de woodlands. It *IS* still a very nice scent however... just a lot more clean and masculine than I tend to gravitate to. Thanks so much to my awesome Picker-upper! I'm so glad I got to try this, as it sounded like it should have been amazing on me,but unfortunately, I think this is headed to the swaps.

Newbie Guide to BPAL and BPAL.org (add your tips)

HTF= Hard to find HG= Holy Grail Tarted imps= Really old imps whose labels are handwritten and were tied on with black raspy twine. Event Exclusive= Perfume(s) that are/were only sold at a specific event (ie Comic-Con, or Bats Day, etc..) Retail Exclusive= A scent blended for a specific ®etailer, which is only available from them (ie Haute Macabre, Think Geek, etc..) WC= Will Call, which is an event at a brick-and-mortar store that has bpals to test and buy. WCWC or NEWC= West Coast Will Call (at Dark Dels) and New England Will Call (at Healthy Living) respectively. Wandcap= a cap for your bottle that has a glass rod attached, and is used for easier application. Also, "cobalt" bottles signify the scent is at the latest from 2008 ( it think?), since it was during that year the lab switched to the current amber bottles.

    Tobacco scents

The first 15 minutes or so of French Tobacco, totally reminds me of Red Lantern. That syrupy sweet smokiness. However, RL doesnt dry down to that clove-y spice that FT does. Initial impressions though are very similar. Maybe try mixing Red Lantern with The Smiling Spider?

    The Illustrated Woman

Like Porcelina mentioned above, I too used to own a bottle of this. I remember opening it, sniffing, and thinking "ewww, no!" and quickly put it in my sales box. Oh foolish foolish boy! If I had only known what I would be missing. I'm assuming that first bottle was "lab fresh" and therefore, not quite as amazing as what I've experienced now... Or maybe my tastes have just changed Either way, this Illustrated Woman is a new favorite. This reminds me of my first crush, when I was 12. She was 4 years older than me, and was a "bad girl". She had bleach blonde hair, studded black leather jacket, and always wore true red lipstick. She would "hide" the smell of smoke from the cigarettes she would steal from her dad, with her mothers musky vanilla perfume, and that is exactly what I get from this. Its a warm musky vanilla, with a touch of cigarette smoke. In that aspect, this totally reminded me of Black lace, but is much smoother, and not as if sniffing an actual ashtray. I think its the pine pitch mostly, actually, that lends that slightly astringent quality of cigarette smoke. Unlike many other reviewers though, I dont get much of a pine note at all. Only the charcoal remains. There definitely is honey in here too, but it is tempered with enough patch and other dark goodies to tame down the sometimes overly-naughty muskiness it can bring. The tobacco too is present and noticeable, but is not the "cigarette" smell in this blend (I leave that to the pine pitch). This is a rich chewy tobacco, the kind that has a similar profile to sage, however it too is tempered nicely behind the other dark and sweet scents. This is most definitely a strong feminine scent, but I dont care, I'm still going to wear the hell out of it. It smells so good. Now, time to update my ISO list

    Our Lady of Pain

I really really love this. Here, I get a gentle and warm floral-musk. Not something I'd usually imagine myself liking, but it is all very soft and comforting. No sharpness, and not too powdery either. The patchouli is a very nuzzly one, especially combined with the lavender. But, there doesnt seem to be much of either on my skin. Just enough to add complexity to the musks. The opium tar is present as well, but to my nose, only in that it lends a faint incense-touched feel. If I wasnt so curious of the other blends in this line, I would immediately buy at least 2 more back-ups. I may just need to splurge anyhow. ETA: I realized, this somewhat reminds me of Heretic mixed with Dorian. Well, not actually note for note. But its somewhere between the "clean and fresh" of Dorian, and the "dark and incensy" aspect of Heretic.

    Sin

Thoroughly corrupted: amber, sandalwood, black patchouli and cinnamon. I just tried this for the first time around summer last year. It was nice, but I felt I liked chimera more, for those days I wanted a sweet spicy scent. Well... fast forward 6 months, and I tried this again and totally fell in love. For me, it is the perfect incense blend. Not powdery or sharp at all, on me. Just thick, syrupy yet smoky, cozy warmth. This is a simple scent, with fairly obvious notes as I sniff. Most present on my skin is dark amber with cinnamon. The patchouli comes in behind those, and seems to only add a nice incense/headshop feel, without being too herbal or dirty. I do love all types of patch, but this is by far my favorite! Then comes the sandalwood, quite far behind the other notes, and which seems only to add to the incense-type feel I get from Sin. Thats pretty much it, in a nutshell. Sin doesnt morph on me, or really develop in any type of progression. I think the base-note-heavy blend keeps the profile consistent, and the only notable change for me, is the inevitable softening and rounding out of the scent as it dries. A truly delicious and exotic experience. Definitely a top 10 GC.

    Quick & Dirty Lupercalia Swap!

Here are bunches of random things that have stuck out in my head as awesome. Of course not expecting anything below, but just in case you were wanting a better idea of the stuff I generally like, here is stuff on my in-the-future-to-buy list C: Candles: Been interested in the B&BW amber incense, and some of the old carnival ones.. but generally any foody or coffee candle is good, from any place. Been wanting to try DarkCandles.com too, but always seem to forget when I have extra $$ . I also have a tart warmer, so the simmering oils do seem quite appealing ATM (45% off). Little sample tarts are cool too.. or votives, or tealites, lol. Just please no "clean" or "crisp" scents. Foodstuffs: Dark chocolate anything. Peanut butter is also good. And if there's coffee, even better. I also love all types of gummy items. Cookies or brownies are my most favorite desserts EVER, but only if they are just barely cooked I'm also a firm believer that a pinch of salt makes any dessert better C; Bath and Body: As mentioned in the questionnaire, I have dry skin, so prefer moisturizing products. Creams and spray-able oil moisturizers work the best. Also, moisturizing scrubs are awesome. As with candles or other perfumed items, I prefer resins, patchouli, ambers, etc. Vanilla is always a good start too, and some soft florals are ok, I just dont enjoy anything too clean or fresh smelling. Knickknacks/miscellany: Besides the little bottles, carvings, and minerals, I am in love with some of the crazy stuff Urban Outfitters has. Like, little blind boxed designer toys, or.. well any type of odd knickknack. Tinythingsarecute.com also has some crazy stuff that is interesting. regarding miscellany, I've realized I somehow do not have even 1 adele CD, and yet I'v loved every song of hers I've ever heard. Oh, and books! I have been looking for a good dessert cookbook. Not so much cookies or cakes, but like, pies, and bars, and croissants... which I guess means more of a bread/pastry cookbook. (2nd hand/used books are awesome, imo C:)
