I definitely smell the "dried" aspect of rose in this perfume. that and the oakmoss are pretty much all I smell. maybe a tiny bit of dirt. it's a really calming, true to life smell. almost like a forest.

    Embalming Fluid

I definitely smell a background of green, cool, jellylike aloe in this one. I think that and the musk are what gives this scent its lasting power. for such a clean scent, it sticks around a remarkably long time. it's not a sharp laundry type of clean, but a juicy and comforting one. it reminds me a little bit of Dorian. in fact I really enjoy wearing Embalming Fluid and Dorian together!

    Depraved

this smells like a juicy apricot has fallen onto sun warmed soil. one of my favorites.

    Perversion

this is coconut rum dominant with a touch of leather. I get some of the Chardonnay. it's bracing and citric in a nice uplifting way. if the tonka is in there at all it's definitely just a subtle background note. since this perfume is pretty much a booze single note, I feel like I smell like I've been drinking when I wear it. I like to wear my pearl earrings when I wear this scent because I like to think they make me look a bit more...pure than my choice of perfume would suggest.

    Bordello

when I first smelled Bordello, I was like "ew. this doesn't smell like plum at all." and put it away for a while. then I dug it out again and I was like "ew. how are they calling this plum. this is gross." and forgot about it again. then I found myself thinking about it. so I dug it out and applied it while thinking "ew, gross." but I couldn't stop smelling my wrist. then I couldn't stop thinking about it and started craving it. and now I've ordered a full bottle I guess I didn't want to admit how much I love this one! I think it smells more like a fruity, musky bubblegum than plum. it's nice and smooth and juicy. the amaretto is barely there but it keeps the sweet tart fruitiness from being so monolithic. it really is delightful.

    Bakeneko

in the bottle, this smells like clockwork couture: male. I don't think they have any notes in common. that one is woodsy vanilla with clove, patchouli, leather, and metallics. on my skin, it becomes slightly foody and woody. similar to cake smash somehow. Kind of has a cookie vibe. that foodiness contrasts with the cherry blossom in a really interesting way. it's very well blended. I guess I can smell all the notes if I really smell it close. not really much of the tangerine, though. I wouldn't say it smells like spanked like other reviewers have. overall I'm definitely pleased with this one. I am so, so picky when it comes to cinnamon and I'm happy that this works well and doesn't smell like red hots. very cozy, snuggly and warm!

    What's the best coconut blend?

obatala: coconut with aquatic notes and creamy cocoa butter. smells very spa-like and comforting. great for bedtime! white rose: creamy rose, coconut, teensy bit of incense and tea. it's more sweet, fatty coconut dominant than rose. quite rich smelling without being suffocating. tiki king: bold, bracing woods paired with the gentlest lemon and a slightly charred smelling coconut. an odd mix, but it's seriously so good. worth tracking down. goblin: similar charred coconut note to tiki king with super dirty smelling patchouli tempered by sweet benzoin. it smells like a smoldering coconut shell sitting on sun warmed soil. love it. try it layered with how doth the little crocodile if you like chocolate. black pearl: cozy, nuzzly white musk and light coconut. the orris and hazelnut are def there but not obvious. they just lend a slight bit of foodiness and gentle powderiness. this is something you can probably wear to work. very versatile and inoffensive. I didn't realize how many beloved coconut blends I own before I wrote this post
  8. I often have trouble with florals, but I love these... Alice: well-blended, subtle honey carnation and rose. Dragons Blood: cherryish lilac. try Ladon if you like the sound of that + apple. Kyoto: cherry blossom and peppery sandalwood. I love to pair this with kabuki (cherry, anise, red musk). but it's also great on its own. Joyful Moon: smooth, clean, white-musky rose. hard to find but it's one of those smells you can wear anywhere. Lilith and the Jarocho: crowd pleasing, inoffensive jasmine and lime. no dirty diaper jasmine smell here. this blend has a nice salty quality that plays off the lime and leaves just enough jasmine funk to make it interesting. White Rose: meaty, coconutty sweet rose. this smells like the taste of coconut jelly beans with light rose. Thouros: juicy/jammy lychee rose. Lilith Victoria: lavender + red musk and fennel. the lavender has almost a pine-y element to it. it's interesting because the lavender keeps switching from sugary to bracingly pine-like on my skin. all while being tempered by smooth red musk. something about this blend reminds me of sunscreen, but in a good way. it's wonderful for bedtime or anytime. I love to layer this with Mme Moriarty sometimes. I get a lot of compliments when I do that! High Strung Daisies: candied, happy carnation and pink pepper. lady in a speckled pink kimono: there's no tea in this, but I could swear I smell chrysanthemum tea mixed in there with the sugary peony. it smells steamy and rich to me. I'll edit this if I think of more!

    Evil

I sniffed this at NYCC not expecting to like it, but it really grabbed me. In the bottle it smells almost leathery. Like a cozy leather. On me, it becomes peppery and musky. I never really smell plum outright but I think it's there in the background calming all the dryness to this scent and preventing it from making you cough. There's no wood or leather in this but something in it reminds me of an expensive, comfortable couch that you can just sink into. Or a fine, gleaming wooden chest. It's a sparkling scent, but a dark sparkle. If that makes sense. It makes me feel fancy when I have it on. Love!

    Single Note: Graveyard Dirt Redux

This smells like real soil + something kind of like alcohol vapor. I still like and want it though

    Single Note: Fog Machine Juice

This smelled like lime lollipops and misty ozone and flowers to me. Not a bad thing, just not what I was expecting.

    Pumpkin Spice Everything

I wish I smelled more raw pumpkin and less spice, but I guess "pumpkin spice" just refers to what you spice the pumpkin WITH. This is just pure cinnamon to me with a bit of syrup. I wish it were drier and woodier, like high quality cinnamon powder smells. This would probably be interesting to layer with though.

    The White Witch

This is like Diet Third Charm. Yummy red musk with some drier, dirtier ingredients. Smells just like Third Charm but with none of the lasting power. Less than 2 hours on my skin when I tested at NYCC. All the other scents I tested lasted over 12 hours. If you loved Third Charm but found it to be a bit too much or too heavy, try this.

    Miss Forcible

This smells like a dupe of Antique Lace to me. It lasts ages too. No cookies or anise. I wouldn't mind if they showed up though. Very grateful that this smells nothing like an old lady to me.

    Daylight Kissing Her Wan Hair

This is the only exclusive that I bought and skin tested. It's quite smooth and musky. I think from the ambrette. It's one of those scents that's all-occasion, all-season, all-people appropriate. Gender neutral. Clean and fresh.

    Liz

I finally picked this up at NYCC this year. I had been wanting to smell this for years (like since I got into BPAL in 2010) but it was one of those scents that always escaped me. In the bottle, I get some florals and leather. The florals aren't old lady or sickly sweet or anything. They're fresh. Mostly what I'm getting is like a fruity, tart, wet rose. Very true-to-life rose. Probably some vanilla orchid too. Maybe a bit of mild jasmine. On my skin, the florals stay the same but there's no leather or smoke apparent at all. (I have plenty of smoky, leathery oils I can layer this with!) I don't detect any obvious vanilla. Its probably there in the background taming all the florals though. I might also smell a light incense undercurrent. Even though I don't get as much leather or smoke as I would have thought, it's still a fantastic blend. It's lasted over 14 hours on my skin. Not what I was expecting, but still great. Anyone hesitant to try this should stop dilly dallying! As for scent comparisons, it kind of smells like Celeste with some rose added, and not as much creamy vanilla. It's very wearable and easy to like. If you like Euphoria by Calvin Klein or Hanae Mori Butterfly, definitely try this one. It's similar to those but better and longer lasting.

    Survival horror!

Pyramid Head definitely smells like The Grand Inquisitor's Heretic's Fork: Coppery dried blood, metal, vetiver, and bonfire smoke.
  18. I think Thouros and Hope smell a lot like Rose Jam. Hope a bit moreso. I bet the two of them layered would be quite close to Rose Jam. I was wondering if there are any BPALs that smell like the green Sugar Scrub? Or Sultana soap?

    Shamisen

it smells very clean. it's almost like a woodier, deeper version of Truth by Calvin Klein. that one also has bamboo. it has really great staying power for such a clean scent. I could smell it days later on my seat belt. I did get compliments on this one.

If your top 5 scents are... Then try these!

for BTBT, try Delight and Consternation or Playful Wooden Mallets. Delight & consternation has chocolate + lemon which is similar to the somewhat lemony black musk and choc combo in BTBT. Mallets has the same musk as BTBT plus super dry, non-potpourri cinnamon. I bet any of those would layer nicely too. Mmmm...

Destructive Vagina of the Fox Spirit

it vascillates between smelling like incense and sour old lady perfume on me. either way, there's not even the tiniest hint of coffee. really disappointing. though I don't mind when it smells like incense. I feel like I got the wrong perfume by mistake.

    Awabi Divers

this is a marriage between depraved and banshee beat. with a little vetiver. I knew I would love this.

    ♥ Alternatives to [ The Unicorn ]

This isn't the most accessible option, but you might try Cottonmouth if you can get your hands on it. Even though you don't like Snake Oil. I barely get any Snake Oil at all out of mine, just pure linden. It smells very much like The Unicorn to me. I got mine from a BPAL Etsy sale. I'm not sure if it's ever gonna pop up there again, though. Maybe try Kyoto? If you don't mind a touch of anise. It's got that clean/innocent/dewy/floaty floral quality in common with The Unicorn. Good luck!
