    ♥ Alternatives to [ The Unicorn ]

I totally second the recommendation of The East- it's lovely. I liked Fairy Market a lot too, and I remember The East being similar in feel, just more "blue" floral if that makes any sense at all. If you haven't tried Snow White, I feel like that is a must for you. This year's Yules also had Go to Sleep, Darlings, which is similar. If you can track it down, you may want to find Klara, which was a Yule a couple of years ago- it is beautiful if you don't mind a soft rose. You mentioned honey not working for you- I didn't think it worked for me either until I tried Alice. It's so nice on I think it would be worth trying. Also High-Strung Daisies and Mouse's Long and Sad Tale could work. HSD is a very pretty light, sweet floral. These may not all be similar to The Unicorn, but hopefully they are in the same light, sweet vein for you. ETA: You may want to check out all the Lupers/Shungas- many are also light florals. Lady in Speckled Pink Kimono and Blossoms in Springtime come to mind from past Shungas.

What do bottles and labels look like?

Thank you!!! I am leaning towards finding a new one.

What do bottles and labels look like?

Anybody have a photo of Snow Whites '12 and '13? I'm thinking about buying one, and since I can't decide on version, I'm thinking of going by label.
  4. I second the idea of Mouse's Long and Sad Tale. Not exactly cotton candy, but very sweet and pink and girly. It's one of my favorites.

    Love

I had high hopes for this one, but my skin chemistry strikes again! In the bottle I can pick out all of the listed notes- it's lovely and creamy. As soon as this goes on my skin, I amp the rose and strawberry. I get no trace of marshmallow or vanilla cream. Another poster mentioned Crunchberry cereal; that is exactly how this smells on me....plus the rose. Every scent I try with strawberry in it does this to me. I guess I need to add strawberry to my list of death notes.
  6. For GC's that haven't already been mentioned, try Hollywood Babylon, O, High Strung Daisies, and Mouse's Long and Sad Tale. I know you aren't looking for LEs, but if you peruse the For Sale section here on the forum, check out the Beaver Moons (esp. 2007), Pink Lace, Sugar Skull, Gollettes, Plastic Pink Flamingo, Velvet Unicorn, the Sugar Moons...I bet you could find some decants of most of these. I would also check out this recommendations section for the threads on candy/sweet scents and gourmand- there are tons more that I'm not thinking of! ETA: I typed LE where I should have said GC.

    Go to Sleep, Darlings

Hmm. At first, I get a blast of amazingly sweet Snow White-y goodness. Nearly identical to Snow White, but with the yummy sweetness amped up. It's awesome. As it dries though, quite a bit of the sweetness gets eaten up by my skin, and I'm left with a mix of Snow White and one of the lab's snow notes...and maybe some greenery? A smidge of mint? By the time this is dry, it's not really sweet at all. My skin chemistry sucks. Literally and figuratively. This isn't bad on me, but I wished it stayed sweeter. I will say that the snow note plays nicer one me than the one in Almond Blossom. FWIW- My DH thinks it smells like "a dirty baby- like someone put a bunch a powder on a baby that really needed a bath".

    Almond Blossom

Yikes. I don't know what my skin chemistry does to this poor scent, but almost the second this hits my skin it amps LAUNDRY DETERGENT like no other. It's crazy strong and honestly gives me a headache. In the imp it smells a lot more almond-y (a foody almond, even), and I'm sad it doesn't stay like that on me. I will say that with time the strength of the scent does mellow some, but it still reminds me a lot of laundry. After the drydown, I do detect the sharp coldness of one of the lab's snow notes; I think this has a lot to do with the way this in turning on me. In the end, I smell dirty snow. Not a favorite.

    L’Essence de L’Engouement

This starts out on me exactly like the smell of strawberry Kool-Aid. It's incredibly sweet and overpowering in its strawberry-ness- it's very "kiddish" and not sexy or sophisticated. After drying some, though, it mellows out and becomes a bit more mature. I start to be able to detect the orange blossom and mayyybe the teeniest hint of the French vanilla, even though the strawberry is still the star of the show. I don't mind the dry-down, and it's not that I don't like the scent- it's not offensive or anything- but it doesn't feel like me. I don't think I would wear this very often. It would be great for a younger girl just starting out wearing perfumes, I think.

    Lady in Speckled Pink Kimono

This truly smells "pink" if pink had a smell. It is soft and light and extremely feminine. In the decant I can smell the lovely vanilla orchid mixed with peony- it has a nice sweetness. On my skin (which sucks up anything sweet), I get almost solely the peony, which has a slight hint of soapiness, but it's not awful. I don't get any of the vanilla orchid at all, unfortunately. A nice scent, but not something I'd probably choose to wear with all the other, sweeter (on me) options I have. If you're looking for a pretty soft floral- something very girly and romantic- this would be perfect.

    Capax Infiniti

On me, this dries down to mostly powder. It's a nice powder-soft and sort of lavender-y I guess- but I don't get any of the ice cream or Dorian that I was hoping for. My skin chemistry strikes again!
  12. Mircalla from the '09 Weenies is very similar to Marianne. I went through a red musk phase and couldn't get enough of either. You may also want to try and track down The Infernal Lover.

    Blossoms in Springtime

I hate hate hate my skin chemistry sometimes. This is absolutely gorgeous in the imp and wet on my skin. Creamiest vanilla honeyed amazingness. I want to bathe in it. But then...my skin sucks in all the yummy vanilla and cream and leaves me with a slightly sweet, tad incensey/spicy floral scent. Nice- not terrible- but the wonderful VANILLA scent that I start out with is gone. Balls. If you love vanilla or creamy scents and don't have wacky skin chemistry like me, you MUST try this one. I still don't find it unpleasant, but my imp will be more than satisfactory.

    Half Elf v5

Wow. On me, this is nearly identical to The Girl, except it is more honey and less vanilla. There is definitely a wood note of some sort in here, and it has that same kind of icy-cold feel that TG does. I like it- it's sweet from the honey and cool and woodsy and kind of delicate. My skin kind of sucks it up, but I think it works well as a skin scent.

Walk into a florist's shop, inhale deeply...

I don't think it's exactly the scent of a florist's fridge, but a lovely cool floral is The East from Neil Gaiman's Stardust scents: "The scent of the winds beyond the wall: bluebonnet, passion flower, freesia, jasmine tea, mint, thyme, and redcurrant".

    Searching for the Perfect Vanilla?

Morocco has a vanilla feel to it, but is not true vanilla to me- quite nice. If you don't mind woody scents, try The Antikythera Mechanism.

    Searching for the Perfect Vanilla?

To me, Black Opal is nothing like Snow White. I can see how some people could get "Play-Doh" from Snow White, but definitely not about Black Opal. It's more of a...minerally scent. And to me, Black Opal isn't even all that vanilla, but YMMV.

    Searching for the Perfect Vanilla?

I personally find a big difference in the lab's scents that list bourbon vanilla compared to other types. I am on the opposite end of the spectrum from you- I LOVE vanilla- but it often gets eaten on my skin, so I'm always searching for scents that scream WHOA HI I'M VANILLA! Scents that list bourbon vanilla usually get passed over by me now, because they never read any vanilla on my skin. YMMV, of course, but I find that bourbon vanilla tends to get overpowered by other notes in a scent, whereas french vanilla, vanilla bean, or vanilla cream, etc. tend to stand out more. There are enough other notes in Paladin that could easily mask the vanilla- especially the metallic element. I'd say give it a shot, but maybe just try an imp.

    Elf v4

Mmmm...This is lovely! This scent falls somewhere in the family of Antique Lace with its vintage feel and soft vanilla, but it's not quite like it. AL is a lot more powdery to me, whereas this is..ethereal? To me, it is most comparable to Celeste, but without the strong alcohol tinge that ruined Celeste for me. Definitely a soft, floral hint of musky vanilla on my wrist. I don't get much in the way of vanilla (my skin likes to eat it), but I get enough to satisfy me. I don't get a ton of throw or wear time, but seeing as this scent begs to be sniffed up close, I'm okay with that.

    Smoky, Sweet Scents?

Not really smoky, but definitely would fall into this category is CC:Female. It's sweet but also leathery and SUPER sexy.
  21. I think CC Female is extremely sexy, and I always get compliments from both genders when I wear it out. Snake Oil is an obvious choice, although I have had people ask if I'm wearing baby powder or something when I've been wearing it, so maybe it doesn't register the sex-ay to everyone who smells it. Banshee Beat is pretty sexy in a casual, bohemian, gyspy sort of way. Red musk tends to be very sexy, but I personally have a hard time wearing it with my skin chemistry. Other notes that read sexy to me are certain leathers (Red Rider..OMG), deep/rich vanillas, most musks, and ambers/tonkas. You can't go wrong with sweet/creamy + leather + musk, in my book.
  22. How would you compare and contrast Door and DNHoney? On a totally unrelated note, I think Tzadikim Nistarim smells and feels a lot like Winter Solstice Lunar Eclipse. I agree with plainjean and The Amber Dawn: the two scents are very similar. Plainjean did a good job of describing the honey that both have- it's very green, but on my skin it stays very sweet as well. The only real difference to me is the addition of chamomile in Door, which gives it a sort of calming/comforting feel that DNHoney doesn't have. I really think that the type of honey in both is the same.

Pears - different BPAL pear scents

The Perilous Parlor is an older LE from either '07 or '08...it's a lovely pear/creamy vanilla scent.

    Bordello

Wow- I don't know how I've managed to keep missing this one until now. I guess the amaretto and burgundy wine scared me off (esp. the amaretto because almond is a doom note for me), but those fears have come to naught. I really like this! In the imp it is very sweet, cool, syrupy fruit. On my skin it deepens a bit and loses some of the syrupy-sweetness to end up a rich, sweet plum. It's beautiful. I don't get anything boozy or off-putting, and my skin chemistry seems to like this a lot. I'll have to get a bottle.

    Kitty

Mmm. In the bottle, this smells like a strawberry cupcake. It's very sweet and creamy, heavy on the strawberry and vanilla components...so, yum! Wet on the skin, it immediately changes to where I'm getting a mix of sweet strawberry, something that smells a bit like citrus (bergamot?), and the honey. Everything blends together to form a bright, sweet, creamy scent that I really like. I can't pick out orchid specifically, although there is a hint of floral in there I do detect. I wouldn't sniff this blindly and think orchid, though. The sandalwood is also undetectable to my nose, which is a wonderful thing since it tends to amp on me and dry out a scent too much. To me, the closest Bpal in resemblance to this would be Beaver Moon '07- there is definitely a bit of the foodieness about Kitty. I was expecting to prefer Celeste to Kitty, but it turns out that it's quite the other way around. I think Kitty is a keeper! Best part is...it doesn't go plastic-y or do anything nasty on my skin, which is amazing!
