  1. Ted’s interpretation.

The ephemeral romance, the fleeting affair: frankincense and blackcurrant, caramelized black amber, and motia attar.

So I had to look up what motia attar was and discovered that it's another name for Jasmine sambac :)

I typically love Ted's lunar interpretations because they always have a warm, soft quality to them and this one definitely has it. The frankincense is clean, the black current is mildly fruity and sweet here with the caramelized black Amber giving it a tiny bit of a smoky, sexy quality to my nose. The motia/Jasmine comes through a little bit at the end and makes the whole blend sparkly in feeling, not in smell if you know what I mean. This is really beautiful and will probably age incredibly.

  2. Gahhhh this is so amazing. I am so thankful to the kind fairy that picked this up for me!!

The patchouli is faint to me with the red musk being front and center. I am obsessed with red musk so this makes me happy. The vanilla is the mellow bridge between the red musk and the opium, I cannot pick up any lilac. Broadway lingers and has that sexy, hazy quality that I also loved in Mrs. Valentine from last year's NYCC exclusives. I will treasure this bottle for sure.

  3. Beth's Patchouli changed my mind about patchouli in general. I was not the biggest fan when I was a teen because so many of my friends wore cheap, shitty patchouli oil. But now I luuuurv patchouli and it's my comfort note when I am feeling physically ill (hungover as well).

    My patchouli blend collection:

    Ask the Nearest Hippie

    Black Moths

    Crypt Queen

    Imaginer

    Dionysia

Feed Me and Fill Me with Pleasure

    Goblin

    Impressions of the Floating World

    The Ilustrated Woman

    Mme. Moriarty

    The Night Raven

    Nasty Woman

    Omen

The Phoenix Having Burst Her Shell

    Snake Oil

    Sin

    Third Charm

    Voodoo

  4. I knew that I would love this. Magnolia is one out of two white florals that always work for me (Gardenia is the other) so I will always be drawn to anything with Magnolia in it. The floral with the honey musk is all in the wet stage and then the beautiful, sweet, light Vanilla Chiffon comes out on the dry down. This is a lingering scent with decent throw. I could actually smell myself in the car on my hour drive to my boyfriends house today and it was glorious. I cannot wait to wear this in the heat of the summer

  5. I was told by my scent twin months ago that I needed this but I had not had an opportunity to try it until tonight. I am enamoured with it.

In the bottle light patchouli and hefty cannabis accord. I was worried at first because I had to stop wearing Baba Yaga when I had it because it smelled waaay to much like weed. I cannot work in a retail environment and smell like pot, it is not a good mix. So I did not want this to end up like that. Luckily, it does not.

The cannabis disappears on the drydown and I am left with a softer version of Banshee Beat ot Revenant Rhythm (take your pick). It is extremely comforting.

  6. I received my Gourmand Chaos Theory # 131 and it's a perfect match for me. It smells like vanilla sugar and slightly scorched caramel in the bottle but when I put it on, it smells like vanilla and strawberry ice cream with warm caramel syrup poured over it. It lasts for hours too. Needless to say, I am extremely psyched haha!

  7. I have to say, my love for vetiver has grown over the years. I originally did not like it at all when I was first getting into BPAL, it just smelled like smoky bacon to me. But trying different vetiver blends has really heightened my love of it and so as a Vetiver convert, I am in love with A Grievous Swarm .

I feel like Annemathmatics really hit the nail on the head with her review. You really have to put this on to experience how it softens. The pepper melts away and all the black elements meld with the tobacco in a luxurious, enticing and almost scandalous way. I feel like this will be incredible in a year and I look forward to using it when it hits that point. For now I will use it sparingly and try to continue to convince people that vetiver isn't always scary :)

  8. Ok, so this is my eighth bottle of hair gloss and it is now my second favorite (Snake Oil is the #1). The honey and the red musk! it's like the Infernal Lover perfume with saffron. It's so heady and rich. There are many things that I have that I get told I smell like a headshop, which people seem to really love and this has that quality also. In fact I would even say that this smells a little bit like Nag Champa which I normally can't stand but Aspen Leaves and Fears is liquid sex. That's the best review I can give haha!

  9. A bottle of this was gifted to me by Heartflood and I adore it. In the bottle it smells like fresh squeezed tangerine juice with patchouli oil but on my skin its an entirely different experience. The patchouli becomes the primary note (I agree with the woodsy deep patchouli that everyone wlse has described). I get the amber a little on the dry down and its a resinous, warm amber not a sweet powdery one at all. The tangerine rounds it out. I can't find any white musk. This is a very different bpal for me and I am enjoying it immensely.

  10. The truth is that I have never had chicory coffee or beignets BUT I went for this nonetheless because I loved the concept and obviously anything that smells like delicious breakfast food is going to be something that I want hehe.

In the bottle: Very sweet, smooth coffee with a sugary note.

On the skin: Almost fruity to a certain extent but still has the coffee edge to it. As it dries it becomes more sugary and less fruity. I have been loving wearing this when I first get up in the morning. It's cozy and happy.

  11. Pumpkin marshmallows smushed into brown sugar-dusted graham crackers with melted chocolate and a hint of campfire smoke.

    The wait is over!!

Ok so I have been dying for this to arrive and here's the deal: For those of you that loved the atmosphere spray (like myself, it's my most favorite one that the Post has ever done), this is different than that. I am pretty sure that the pumpkin in here is the same pumpkin in the Pumpkin Pie bath oil (also a favorite of mine). It's that warm, caramel-y pumpkin but it's super amped up with smoky marshmallow, a hint of chocolate and graham cracker. I think that the atmosphere spray was more graham cracker, dry pumpkin and smoky marshmallow but that is just my opinion after all.

I have this rubbed all over my arms and I am literally sitting in a cloud of pumpkin graham marshmallow. If you loved the spray, buy this. It's not the exact same, but it's a perfect companion scent to it.

  12. I love the label on this! I remember making a post on social media when the events that inspired this smell happened. Flu sucks but this is a precious memory encapsulated.

In the bottle: Strawberry cake to the extreme! strawberry Duncan Hines cake mix baked in a tiny oven with strawberry frosting. I almost feel like there may be a tiny bit of the scent of the very pink lipstick that was a gift as well because there is just something...different mixed in there. It's not plasticy smelling but if you have ever smelled a brand new tub of revlon lipstick, you will know what I am talking about.

On me: MMMMMMM strawberry buttercream frosting with the cakey note still being prevalent. The buttercream frosting mellows out and the cake note because drier. Now it smells more like strawberry angel food cake.

I am probably going to plow right through this bottle because I love the smell and I feel like I need to reapply it every two hours to get the rich-cakey smell effect to keep going. I don't agree with the Sprinklecake comparison as that one is intense chocolate cupcakes and this one is sweet, strawberry cake. No chocolate. It totally reminds me of all the birthday parties that I went to for my friends when I was little.

  13. I smell the warm, rich pumpkin a wee bit in the bottle along with ginger, cinnamon and I think nutmeg. On my skin there isn't any detectable pumpkin but there is so much throw of those three spices! I love this. My nose tingles from the spiceness! This is only going to get more amazing with age.

  14. I am totally in love with this. It smells like being a kid in the summer....all the yummy summer treats bottled up! I get the orangesicle and cotton candy more than anything else on me, which I am glad about because Merlot can turn really weird. Kinda curious if these are all things that Brian enjoys himself? In any case, it's a very fun, nommy smell and I am going to wear my bottle out quick once it actually gets warm here in VT <3

  15. This has IMMENSE staying power! Probably my favorite out of the Courtesans'...I thought Celeste was for a while but my skin just eats that right up.

On me when this is wet it is almost all lavender and tobacco with just a touch of musk..it''s a little bit traditional cologne-y if you will. But the drydown brings out the smoky honey musk and amber....mmmmmmm. I get no rose out of this, which I am glad because I prefer it just the way it is. Love, love, love!

  16. Damn, I love this so much and I really didn't expect to! I normally don't do well with the citrus notes but blended with the pumpkin, these ones in particular are scrumptious. I like the panetone comparison above because it does smell like warm, sweet spicy baked goods..mine smells a little caramel-ish on me but I do amp any sweet note. I have been decimating the proto of this at work but I bought a bottle from the lab at NYCC this weekend so now I will save the rest of the proto oil for other people to try it at Halloween NEWC :) seriously love this though!

  17. Devilishly decadent and a little bit ridiculous!

This bath oil is a dark brown...its got little black flecks in it, just like real pumpkin pie :)

I used this last night after my wash-off-NYCC shower as body oil (I always use the bath oils as body oils) and was instantly transportated to happy land. This seems to have the same spicy notes as the Marshmallow Pumpkin bath oil (which I also have and adore) from last year but it's less sugary...way heavier on the pumpkin I think. Very decadent. It made the whole hotel suite smell like a bakery :)

  18. I have had my bottle of Snake Oil HG since.....I'm going to say February? In fact I know it was February because it was my Valentines Day present to myself. I know the label says it has a shelf life of 6 months but I'm going on 8 months now and it's still going strong. I have a little less than 1/2 left.

I use 2 - 3 pumps at a time and spritz it into my hands, rub them together and then run my hands onto the lower half of my hair and work my fingers into my scalp. The smell is intoxicating. I love Snake Oil everything but the version that makes the hair gloss is so spicyvanillamagic! I am obssessed with it. If I put my hair up and then take it down later it is this rush of Snake Oil that envelops me....I have given many hugs that make people be like, mmmmm you smell sooo good. Men especially seem to like it :)

I will buy some more at NYCC if Puddin' brings it along (*hint *hint)

  19. I have not done a review in quite some time but I wore this a couple of days ago and decided to weigh in...

I really like Autumn Cider now that it has some age on it. When it first came out I got one because I was hoping for something similar to Fearful Pleasure (my all time favorite Halloween Bpal) but I wore it once and it was WAY too fruity and I didn't get much of the spices. So I have been letting it sit for months and just broke it out recently to discover that it has mellowed into a warm, spicy, still fruity yet- not -so -much- so -that -I -can't -wear -it oil. I love the rich butterscotch note and the cinnamon and nutmeg...I think I am going to use this in the oil burner as well in my house to achieve maximum "It smells like Fall!" comments so if any of you find that it doesn't agree on your skin, try it as a house scent!
