BPAL of the Day:
Aelopile
Favorite Scents:
At present, my "A-list" scents are 13, Aelopile, Aglaea, Al Azif, All Souls, And There Was A Great Cry in Egypt, Arachnina: the Spider Girl, Bewitched, Blood Moon, Boomslang, Chimera, Coyote, Dragon Moon 2008, The Ecstasy of Passion, Fenris Wolf, Fortunato, Freak Show, Gypsy Queen, Hunter Moon 2007, Hymn to Proserpine, The Ifrit, Imp, Khandita, Kuang Shi, Lampades, Lot and His Daughters, Lyonesse, The Masque, Midnight Kiss, Mme. I try to keep an up to date list of scents I've tried at and what I thought of them at: http://www.wildideas.net/bpal/tried.html

In general, I'm very fond of musky/spicy/incensey blends. Some specific notes: things like amber (and most other resins), balsam fir, benzoin, cinnamon, clove, copal, ginger, labdanum, some musks, and sandalwood. Oakmoss, patchouli and vetiver are good in moderation, as long as they don't dominate a scent.

I am also coming to like some fruit notes, as long as they're balanced by other things and don't end up smelling too "foody". They can add a nice note of sweetness to a blend sometimes. I used to be afraid of them, but BPAL uses them really well and they don't amp on my skin the way florals do. The combination of a bit of fruity sweetness with a dark earthy/incensey/musky base can be really lovely.

Florals are very dicey with me -- sometimes they work OK, when used in moderation, but more often not my skin amps them to an unpleasant extent.
