  1. I'm looking for suggestions for BPAL fraternal twins of these two scentsHavana by Aramis:

    * Top Notes

    * Coriander Seed, Anise, BIrch Tar, Juniper Berry, Tangerine, Grapefruit, Orange,

    *Middle Notes

    * Bay Rum, Cumin, Jamaican Pimento Berry, Pepper, Jasmine, Hyacinth.,

    *Base Notes

    * Exotic Woods, Tobacco, Patchouli, Cedarwood, Myrhh, Labdanum, Oilbanum, Tonka bean, Vanilla

One's that may be worth a shot:

Isaac the Living Skeleton - Bourbon, tobacco, dry bone, bay rum aftershave, and sleazy cologne.

The Great Sword of War - Mandarin, tonka, saffron, black tea, cocoa, tobacco leaf, sanguine red musk and five classical herbs of conflict.

Wilde - Patchouli, tonka bean, bergamot, moss, lavender, jasmine and thyme.

Casanova - A rakish blend of leather, anise, lavender, bergamot and amber with tonka, lemon peel and lusty patchouli.

Oberon - Orchid, white musk, and bergamot wafting over juniper berries, with a gentle touch of soft, earthy patchouli.

Oblivion - Dark musk, wood spice, labdanum, patchouli, dark African woods, and saffron.

To give you the idea, Wilde and Casanove share three notes with Havana, the rest share two. I'm willing to lend you my Wilde and Casanova for experimentation.

Also, for my mom, Pino Silvestre:

    * Top Notes

    * Bergamot, Lavender, Lemon,

    *Middle Notes

    * Geranium, Pine, Clary Sage,

    *Base Notes

    * Cedarwood, Moss, Musk, Amber

When my mom had me smell a sample of that, it reminded me a little of how Cathode dries down on me.

    Hooray for enabling moms!!!!

I think your mom might like:

Saint-Germain - Gilded amber, hypnotic lavender, brash carnation and deep mosses.

Calliope - Lavender and bright mint with bergamot, verbena, thyme and a touch of sweet orange and warm almond.

Clio - Dry parchment, lavender, heavy woods, patchouli, benzoin, orange and amber.

Baghdad - Amber, saffron and bergamot with mandarin, nutmeg, Bulgar rose, musk and sandalwood.

I'm not saying that any of these smell exactly like tha perfumes mentioned, just that they might like them based on notes.

If anyone knows of a good BPAL substitute for either of these then please, post!

  2. I also want the ultimate gingerale. Sure, gingerbread is fine, but I'd kill for a tickle-your-nose spicy and fizzy gingerale.

I may get kicked for this, but, Demeter has a gingerale fragrance and I swear you can smell the bubbles! It literally tickled my nose when I sniffed it. Until Beth does one of her own (mmmmm, evil gingerale) at least you have something to fulfill your craving.

  3. This topic is a great idea, and it is very helpful to see all the responses and suggestions.

In recent weeks I went on a quest for the ultimate BPAL chocolate scent(s). Now to track down some other favorite fragrance notes!

Some "ultimate" scents or combinations I would like to find now would include:

a nice marshmallowy vanilla that somehow manages not to be cloying.

roses and vanilla other than Alice - there is a note in Alice (possibly the bergamot) that says "men's aftershave" and spoils the effect for me.

roses and lemon keeping it simple, maybe a bit of vanilla to round it out.

amber and vanilla just the two, with little or no embellishment.

amber and sandalwood with few to no floral notes, please!

cherry and vanilla again, preferably without floral notes.

chocolate and musk somehow this sounds like it could work.

fruits and spices with NO floral notes, vanilla would be OK.

a very dry, spicy incense with NO green or floral notes - just woods, resins and spices.

Any suggestions on any of these would be appreciated. The quests continue!

I'm unsure about most of these, but giving it a shot.

Roses and lemon - Delerium maybe, there's apple in it but I don't know how prevalent it is.

Cherry and vanilla - This may sound odd, but Enraged Groundhog Musk in the dry stage is just a lovely light cherry scent, not overly sweet at all. I wasn't sure about this blend at all until I tried it a second time and got to the drydown. Yum.

Fruits and spices - Shango comes to mind, it's currently on my wishlist so I have no idea how well it works, but it sounds just right.

Spicey incense - Anubis, Anubis, and more Anubis. It starts of really nice and light and dries down to pure incense and nothing else, it's glorious. Alternately (and this is pretty funny) Mr. Jacquel, starts off a bit foody but that goes away and leaves spices and amber in it's wake. Guh!

I love War- it's headed for my bottle list. It's a warmer scent than I'm thinking of, though (wanting a cold scent but not liking mint doesn't help things). I think what I really want is for Beth to start doing custom blends again. :P That would solve all my problems in life and I would start getting straight A's and win the lottery and lose 20 pounds without trying.

If you want something mean that's not too warm and not minty, maybe try something loaded with ozone. Lurid? maybe?

  4. I want the ultimate mean scent. Something that says, "I will kill you as soon as look at you." So far Les Fleurs du Mal is the closest for me. Whip and Wanda are out because of the leather, Marquise de Merteuil is more elegant than I want, and I can't remember why I didn't like Vicomte de Valmonte, but I know that didn't work either.

The dear Vicomte smelled like Axe on me, and while I enjoy Axe, I expect more from my bpal. Have you tried War, I haven't but your description sure fits the character.

  5. Ok, I'm dense, but I looked through the thread and I still can't see the Stardust pics. :P Where have they been posted?

evilmistressoftoast's gallery, just go to her profile and click the gallery tab.

I have a question, could someone show me a 10ml compared to a 5ml and an imp? Please, I'm considering buying one in a sale/swap but have no idea how big they are.

  6. I'd like ... something that smells like the fabulous Good Earth's Jasmine Green Tea, very light on the jasmine.

I'd like this also, when I said jasmine I was thinking of Jasmine Tea, and I actually am drinking the Good Earth Jasmine Green as we speak. On me Mata Hari has some nice jasmine notes and it's what made me want the jasmine tea, and a nicer jasmine scent. I'll let you know if I find one. On my "anything that contains jasmine" list the most likely prospects for a lighter jasmine are:

    Namaste

    Kitsune-Tsuki

    Helena

    Santa Eularia des Riu

    Nuit

    Nyx

The Fox-Woman Kuzunoha Leaving Her Child

    Eshe

    Thalassa

The Fox Woman Kuzunoha even has white tea in it. I haven't tried any of these though, so I have not idea how the jasmine works in them.

  7. Have you tried Nocnitsa? That had an honest-to-god wet dirt note at the start. It faded (I liked what it faded into - I like moss), but it was absolutely dirt at the beginning.

An imp is on the way, kinda. I'm lucky in that my best friend is just as addicted as I am, so we share all the new imps and bottles that come in. I get to try twice as much as I normally would. If it's as awesome as I hope it is I'll get a bottle and layer it with Zombi. :P

  8. I know how you like a good list funkmoppet, and I'm curious, what kinds of scents are you craving?

    :P *cracks list writing knuckles*

The big one for me is the ultimate castle scent. One without pine, and without dragon's blood, and without food notes. I want stone and wood and tapestries. Problem is myrrh is such a good note for that, but my stupid skin won't play very nicely with myrrh.

    Then there's:

Ultimate animalistic musk scent. (Some kind of Buck Moon, Coyote, Smut hybrid)

Ultimate librarian scent. (Aziraphale's the closest, and I adore it - but I'd just love one LIKE that, but with extra musk, and a touch of pipe smoke. Just a touch.)

Ultimate woodlands scent. (one without pine, with more dirt, mushrooms, mulch and light wild-flowers)

Ultimate beach scent (without sunscreen. Sand, salt and wild grasses)

Ultimate rose scent (a big ask with rose's amping tendencies on me - but I'd love a rose with wood, leather and musk that doesn't just turn into rose on me.)

Ultimate worsted wool scent. (with heather. Heavy wool laundered with a breath of heather or lavender.)

Ultimate warrior scent. (with no dragon's blood. I want salt, leather, steel and sweaty musk.)

And I'm with you on the ultimate vanilla and berry scent. Tart wild berries.

    I don't ask for much. :)

I'll take one of each of those. :D

Have you tried The Black Tower? I haven't but it sounds like it might fit one of your wants (not sure which one), and I don't see any notes that won't work for you.

I amp rose too. I love rose, but I am trying to find a rose that doesn't end up a single note on me, it's the reason Zombi had no earth on me. :D

  9. Ultimate grapefruit for me is Baobhan Sith. Can't wait for my bottle to arrive.

Ultimate pipe tobacco for me is Hearth 04. Cherry tobacco, like my old parish priest used to smoke - spot on. Herr Drosselmeyer is also a close second.

Ultimate citrus and vanilla for me is Theodosius. Also musky. Seriously divine. Knocks Dorian out of the park for me as far as tea blends go.

Thanks for those. Herr Drosselmeyer was good, but not nearly rich enough for me. I should have said I want pipe tobacco sex.

I know how you like a good list funkmoppet, and I'm curious, what kinds of scents are you craving?

  10. Well, I'm not an expert, but I'd recommend Dorian as a musky vanilla, and I found Obatala to be an incredible coconut scent. As for earth and rose, I'm not into rose personally, but a browse of the site gives Zombi as an earthen rose.

    Good luck! :P

I've tried Zombi, and unfortunately it was all rose on me, I liked it, but am needing a bit more dirt, or alot more dirt. Thanks for the other recs though, I'll keep them in mind.

  11. I was wondering if, like me, anyone else has specific blends they're trying to find.

I really get to the point of craving a scent, and if I don't already own it, then I have to go searching for it. These are the one's that I haven't found yet, and am currently searching for.

    Musky vanilla,

    aquatic vanilla,

    citrus and vanilla,

    berries with vanilla,

    the ultimate pipe tobacco,

    the ultimate coconut,

    the ultimate grapefruit,

    the ultimate jasmine,

    the ultimate cognac, and

    a earthy/dirt rose scent.

I'm not necessarily looking for recommendations (though they are always appreciated), just seeing if other people look for scents this way. I also thought it would be a good place to keep this list so that I can point others to it if they want to know what I'm looking for.

Admins, let me know if there's already a thread like this, or if it needs to be moved, please.

    Edited to add to list.

  12. Sin is delicious for winter.

I agree, although I'm wearing it right now and it's 90 degrees........indoors! All I can say is, we're all sweating, but I smell the best!

I was afraid Sin wouldn't get any love, but yes Sin is a great Fall/Winter scent. It's musky Cinnamon sex!

  13. According to them:

Woody and resin fragrances relate to the air signs.

Floral fragrances relate to the water signs.

Spicy and exotic fragrances relate to the fire signs.

Rich and earthy fragrances relate to the earth signs.

Yeah, see I'm a Cancer with Gemini Moon and Libra rising. I fit my chart very well (where I don't match Cancer, the Gemini takes over), and with very few exceptions (rose or violet in certain blends) I HATE florals. I fit every other group of fragrances except the water signs. *sigh* I'm a weird one. I guess my sense of smell is another place where my Gemini takes over.

  14. In the vial: I'm getting the amber and the sandlewood, maybe a hint of the mandarin. It really reminds me of my grandmother's perfume Shalimar (maybe it's my untrained nose?)

Wet: Yup, Shalimar, which I don't mind at all. I always loved the way my grandmother smelled. The spices come out a bit more here, and it's all spicy resiny goodness. LOVE! After a few minutes the mandarin and bergamot move up and while it doesn't shout CITRUS! or FRUIT! it does get slightly sweeter, and really lovely. I'm completely in love with this. :P

Dry: I get the mandarin, some spices, and a bit of amber in the background. It's really well blended though so no one note is taking over the whole thing. I wouldn't call it fruity or spicy, maybe musky and resiny. Truly unisex, and very sexy. It only smells like Shalimar for the first minute or two, so if you hate Shalimar don't let that turn you off. This gets big bottle status. :D

ETA: I was sitting in my math class catching little whiffs of rose, I thought it couldn't be me, but sure enough when I smelled my wrist the rose in Baghdad had come out. It must be a really shy rose because I didn't smell it until the very end, when it said "hi.....ok bye now" and I had to reapply.

  15. In the imp: Roses, roses, OMG roses. I was hoping this would be toned down a bit by the earth notes as I'm not the biggest fan of florals, but I do enjoy roses from time to time.

On:The sharp ROSE note pops out immediately, and it really smells like I've got a rose corsage on and I'm simply sniffing that. A few minutes in some warm earthy notes come out and while they don't cover up the rose at all (like I had hoped) they set a wonderful background for it. Smells just like the rosewater hand sanitizer I bought for my wedding. (I nearly cried when I ran out because it smelled so good and I wouldn't be able to get any more.)

It's not what I expected (moist soil and rose petals), but I like it even more for purely nostalgic reasons. I'm definately keeping the imp, but I'm not sure if I'm going to get a big bottle yet. It's not really an everyday scent for me, just something to wear when I'm feeling girly (doesn't happen often but it does happen).

ETA: I should not trial test a scent when it's anywhere near "that time of the month". I wore zombi again today (as I don't have many scents yet, and wanted to change it up a bit) and WOW! Still not as much dirt as I wanted, but the dirt is there now. It has gone from rosewater, to a full damp rose laid on a fresh grave (sorry for the imagery there, but that's really what it is.) Amazing, I may get a bottle afterall.

  16. The chill waters of the Orkney coast, tea-leaved willow, honey-touched Grass-of-Parnassus, sea aster, and Scottish Primrose.

In the vial:The scent of a seals skin lying on a warm bit of washed up wood with some honeysuckle sticking out of it. Yum! If it stays this warm i won't have to worry about it being too aquatic for me.

Wet: The honeysuckle everyone else is getting comes out right away, with a bit of aquatic tang in the background and something else warming it up a bit. Honestly it smells kinda soapy, like a really good soap, but soap none-the-less.

Dry: Dove soap, while I do like the smell of Dove, I don't really want to waste a perfectly good vial when someone else will be really really happy with it. I may try it one more time to be sure, but it's probably being swapped.
