    PSL: Pumpkin Snake Latte

Snake oil + a dark sort of gritty and smooth at the same time coffee note. The musky /etc vanilla that usually glows in the snake oil has kind of a slightly tamped down earthy pumpkin twinge to it, but I’d probably not guess pumpkin if I didn’t know the notes. I like this because it’s like everything you already love about snake oil, but the darker parts are amplified. ive had my sample since soon after these first came out, and it’s stayed pretty much in this category ~ dark snake oil amplified by black coffee that plays well with the patchouli and other complexities/slightly gritty but smooth at the same time/slight earthy thing happening with the vanilla that glows in a different sort of muted earthy way. the colors I imagine from this are— like a dark amber-orange glow held to the light, with like dark instant coffee being dropped in, and you can see it start to liquify in dark strands reaching up.

    Still Life With Dooting Skull

sorry if I repeat myself ~ I’m on DayQuil for a stupid cold 😂 writing reviews to pass the time. (Not scents I’m testing today obviously) I love this scent. It basically smells like complicated sort of apothecary-like rootbeer to me. More gourmand than that stimulating sassafras scent, less herbal but more rooty/a little bit floral but the floral reads as just some other thing in the overall goblin mash. There’s a little darkness in the blend too, it reminds me of when you have a lot of things sort of marinating in a jar to make a tincture or infusion. And the liquid used for the infusion has a honey sweet aspect that you don’t notice quite as much until you taste it ~ like it smells a but darker/rootier than it tastes. (or in this case put it on your skin and let it sit a while). It just makes me imagine someone magical in some other time creating a healing brew full of things you haven’t heard of but are oddly familiar. And the brew might have some unspoken magical qualities. There’s a bit of darkness in this in a rooty almost resinous way, for a bit, before it warms up and grows sweeter and more vanillic. I guess the vanillic thing is the coconut ~ but idk man, just reading the notes before I tried it, I was imagining something totally different. If I was describing how the scent actually smelled, id guess this as the notes/flavor text: “the gnarled sparkling and dew tinged goblin mulled about in its little cottage at the first sun, when the moon still hung in the sky. When you knocked on its door, it welcomed you with blank-faced frenetic energy and beckoned you into the mossy abode. Rows of cobwebbed bottles sat on a shelf in the silvery blue morning light. After describing what ails you, the goblin reaches for a little pale bulbous bottle from the shelf, and tells you to drink. It tastes like root-beer, and also like things only goblins know of.” Layers of goblin roots, rootbeer, licorice root, vanilla bean, fermenting honey, a spooky goblin kiss of dried healing flowers lol. I wish it was a little less sweet, but the rooty intrigue of it does temper some of that honey sweetness that peeks through after you wear it a bit especially. Like after a while it starts to warm up and smell like rootbeer sort of drying in the sun, like that syrupy honey starts to come out. But the rooty stuff and a vanillic aspect is still there, and still retains that unique potion-ey aspect, so I kinda tolerate the up close sweetness even though I’m not a sweet or honey person. There’s enough to counteract that in the blend, at least on my skin. if you liked third eye extraction from the ‘21 Liliths, you might like this. It’s a more gourmandy scent that I think wouldn’t be out of place on the same goblin shelf~ It’s like spooky rootbeer.

    Snake Milk

This was amazing immediately out of the mail. I have never tried “plain” SO - but this smells like what I imagine decently aged SO to smell like in my mind lol, but with the addition of the milk scent rounding it off. I’m really noticing the vegetal musks (my favorite part), earthy patchouli, and dark vanilla in this much more and in a sort of richer and smoother way than in the other blends I’ve tried so far. the milk aspect isn’t cloying or thick/sour/weird in any way on me, as milk notes can go sometimes. It just serves to add this emanating warmth that really makes the darker aspects of the SO shine and meld gorgeously. The milk has a toastyness to it, and ever so slightly sweetened - the closest I can describe is it almost has like a tinge of toasty caramel or butterscotch to it, but it’s not overly gourmand. It’s just like this soft semi sheer milky warmth that doesn’t take over the SO at all, just enhances it in an iconic cozy way without compromising the darker earthy tones of the SO one bit. The projection is at just the right level - beautiful and easy to wear/not cloying, but present. It’s very grounding, and one of those scents that effortlessly becomes a part of your aura - obviously very different from snake smut, but they “wear” similarly in that aspect, like putting on a favorite jacket. I call scents like this BMW perfumes because they’re like luxury cars in my mind hahaha (saying this as someone who has never drove a car and knows nothing about them 😂) I totally agree that this seems like it would be an amazing hair gloss, and dreamed of one as soon as I tested the bottle out : P

    Old Moon 2022

I enjoy orris from time to time, but didn’t expect to love this as much as i do for some reason. I was expecting basically a powdery thing, but I sampled it because of the “old” lol and I like attic/dusty/antique adjacent scents. I prefer the opening of this over the longer dry down. At first it is very soft and ethereal and the best way I can describe it is it gives me vibes of like… a ghost who smells ever so faintly of something horse or old saddle like for a while. It’s very see through, airy, and muted with that odd ghostly aspect to it. as it wears the white musk amps more on me and the oris gets more “pinched” smelling in the sense that the sharper more powdered and almost high pitched fresh cola aspects of the musk and the punchier parts of the orris come out. Now it smells more like what I expected initially ~ it wafts around me with a sort of dusty old white fabric vibe though, which I like. I need to do some more full day tests with this to see if wears too high pitched and powdery as the hours go on, but I’ll update when I do.

    Bourbon Tobacco & Bergamot

I sampled this one just because, despite not being interested in the blend (tobacco is usually a death note for me, and the combo seemed like it might end up being headachy for my senses in particular) it turned out to be one of the ones I liked most out of the bunch of duets this came out with. there is something oddly familiar about it, and I just discovered this morning what it is. It has a gasoline vibe. But like… interpretively. Like if gasoline didn’t smell toxic (even though I love the scent haha) but more like a semi gentlemanly blend of plants that are intended to be laid back and kind of refined, but uplifting at the same time while not falling into “ocean spray” or whatever territory. Almost juicy somehow - (I mean all that positively, as gasoline is one of my favorite notes) it smells a lot less like gasoline as it settles and becomes more like a slightly stronger than a skin scent thing. the tobacco also doesn’t go sour or cloying on me, like it does almost every single time from any house. I don’t love the further drydown as much - because it gets like a waft overlay of a savory musty kind of thing on me - almost wilty celery like. But this is coming from someone who has issues with tobacco overall, so don’t let my opinion make or break your decision. It’s the way the tobacco is blending with the bergamot on my skin. overall this is a unique blend that has a refreshing, cozy, natural, slightly masculine leaning vibe. The almost juicy freshness of the bergamot mingling with the richer and darker but cozy tobacco underneath is really lovely, and doesn’t smell too “typical” for a bergamot scent. id have definitely FSed this if it played well with my skin chemistry in the longer dry down phases ~

    Ghosts at Aldershot

I was super super excited about this one ~ I would have preferred frozen lemons instead of boiled (to fit my ultimate scent fantasy from a day I was so so thirsty and had a bowl of frozen lemons and mint in the freezer and the ice slid out of the bowl and I like bit into it and it was full of ice cold water and smelled and tasted amazingggg ahahaa) - but whatevs. ANYWAYS - Back on topic: Since I got my decant of this I’ve had to wear it constantly, and I just can’t get enough of it. Such is the problem with scents like these, which often fade quickly to the base note/s. This does however, seem to linger much longer than other scents in this family. when I first put it on, it’s very cooling. Like the mint in it actually creates a cooling sensation on my skin, as well as the gorgeous way the mint slowly creeps out into a billowing cloud with hints of the other notes that actually soothes me when I get migrainey. I don’t get lemons in this in any obvious way, but there is something that is present that adds that essence to it- maybe like someone expressed a lemon peel standing far away from you, or like the pith of a lemon - a very pale yellow. the marshmallow in this is absolutely perfect. Not too sweet at all, and quite stretchy. the mint lays over top and it’s all quite soothing and cooling, and makes me want to fall asleep. It’s a bonus that my sheets smell amazing in the morning when I fall asleep with this on. im so happy with how strong and long lasting the mint is in this omggggg (while also not smelling like toothpaste or reminding me of anti mouse peppermint oil cotton balls) ~

    Slay!

This is outstandingly sexy in a very fetish-ey bohemian kind of a way ~ I feel like if you love boomslang and possibly snake smut also, you’ll DEFINITELY like this. Sniffing the bottle - it smells good, but like it might be not unique in my collection, as I have a lot of heavy bourbon/vanillic skanky patchouli blends. on the skin, it’s a different story, as immediately all that dark chewy richness immediately blooms with a rich sensuous leather base. I’m basically smelling *everything* dark and sensuous, like spilled out over supple leather chaps as it soaks in~ It’s bombastic and showy, but also come hither and very back stage. it’s amazing how strong this is, but then it settles to such a soft and gentle scent on me. Like a cozy warm vanillic oudh soft patchouli mingled with leather in the most laid-back sense. it’s wild that this one isn’t talked about more, because OMG this is certainly iconic ~

    Wilde

Mmolggjfhffhhfff I love this. i reallllyyy really dislike cologne scents, so this is saying something. I’m the type of person that if a scent even has a hint of smelling like cologne, usually its in my destash pile immediately. this however, is gorgeoussss. I feel like I’m smelling some kind of secret or something. Like I’m way too close to Oscar Wilde after suddenly time traveling. I admit, I never would have tried this if it didn’t come as a frimp in an order. Not just because I dislike cologne, but also because the way I think of Oscar Wilde, I imagine him wearing more sensuous foreign attars and intoxicating florals and spices and ambers and things like that ~ like things from settings he describes in his fairytales in such vivid ways. I bet he would indeed wear those scents, but this really unexpectedly does evoke him to me. And if not Oscar Wilde, maybe some other kind of wildeian romantic victorian man ~ it’s clean, fresh, pretty sexy, lavender pitched, and very *human* smelling to me. I literally can not describe colognes, and others have done better, so I’ll leave it at that.

    Tarasque

This is really interesting ~ I read the reviews quite a bit but still couldn’t imagine exactly what it would be like. on me, it’s like a sort of soft cozy scent, but it’s atmospheric in a way enough that it’s giving more than just that if that makes any sense. And yeah, it’s maybe even a bit oily on me as well in a hard to pin down way- not like a harsh industrial oil, but something oily nonetheless ~ maybe it’s the labdanum evoking that, I dunno.) It’s like a soft spiced anise black tea with soft sweetness ~ it’s more uplifting rather than sitting heavy on the skin. the longer I wear it, up close something that reminds me of soft beat up worn leather starts to come out~ more like a brown or tawny leather. It blends very seamlessly with the tea. (And in the long wear time starts to break apart a little on me, as some bpal leather can sometimes - like bright red dildo does. - but in this case it really works since it gives with the other notes very well and the airy theme so it doesn’t feel out of place) the spice isn’t strong at all- more like a blendy spice where you smell the impression of it being there without the overt bite. It’s very approachable and not heavy at all like how heavy clove can be sometimes, more like the higher pitched part of the scent of spice that can smell almost sweet. I don’t know what kind of spice this is exactly ~ maybe more like allspice with a little cinnamon and/or peppercorn or something. it really melds into my skin and aura a lot, with a gently sweet tea like floof with hints of like leather seats. I feel like I’m sitting in the captains area of an airship drinking some kind of tea from a different world. it has vibes of - those calm nostalgic airy interludes in a video game or movie ~ like a time of innocence but there is some important mission to be taken care of soon ~

    The Inexorable Finger

Just received this from the Etsy store, so it’s new but aged I’m guessing ~ it’s really super dark, which is what I wanted. Like pitch black soil~ this is basically what I tend to envision soil smelling like in scents, rather than the more ethereal mildewy top notes soil can have. the blackest patchouli, very smooth. as it wears it starts to get a tang of sourness in there for me, similar to what dark tobacco scents can do on my skin. but that starts to thankfully fade away as it starts to get what I can only describe as this glassy black smoothness to it. It makes it go from fecund and dark to oddly juicy in a weird liminal black glassy void way. im so glad the sour part went away. It only lasted about five - ten minutes as it settled on my skin. Ugh it’s so good wtf issss thissssss. 😂 So glad I decided to pick it up. edit: the sour-ey thing does return a bit later on me, but it’s got more of like almost a motor oil kind of finish to it and it’s more subtle, so it’s not bad. I think this will just continue to fluctuate on my skin throughout the wear time as scents like this can be wont to do.

    Tonka Bean & Pink Pepper

I was expecting this to be a headache bomb for me, with the way I can be sensitive to certain kinds of tonka scents, esp ones that can have a harsh condensed hay sort of an edge to them. This is so unexpectedly lovely. The pink pepper note is very prominent and smells pleasingly realistic ~ I used to crumble pink peppercorns onto this one drink at an old bartending job and I loved the scent and texture of them ~ this smells similar to that, maybe with a little less of a bite, but still has that bright earthy ness. the tonka is beneath and it is very lovely, not overpowering. It’s super smoooooth and soft, like an old easy chair, just cradling that gorgeous pink pepper note. There’s something about this that smells a little like dried spiced holiday tea from afar. It’s earthy, smooth, comforting, kind of a laid back witch scent, the sort of thing you put on to feel at peace by yourself, but can work for cuddling also. Gonna be upgrading to a bottle for sure.

    Snake Smut

This is such a strange scent on me. I got two bottles because I’m low key obsessed with it 😂 tbh I experience everything mentioned in every review on this so far, in the sense that it seems to be different every time I put it on ~ maybe from changes in my body chemistry or just perception or what, I have no idea. I did not like this scent fresh at all ~ the combination of notes almost smelled like a choking powdery mildew over top a dry tobacco-like patchouli, or a dirty well worn leather. give it a few weeks, and the magic begins~ the notes start to deepen and blend and situate in a different way, getting a bit more fleshed out and simultaneously blended. Overall it has something oddly grounding about it. It’s very earthy and full of cardamom that floats over top like a haze over the rest of the melange. It’s a scent that instantly feels “lived in” if that makes any sense at all. sometimes I put it on and I can really smell mostly the spiced vanilla in the snake oil, other times it’s all cardamom and ruddy leather with puffs of patchouli and almost like a rye whisky scent. Sometimes I even get a slight resinous cola tinge in the beginning that some people have mentioned ~ a lot of times it’s all of these things at once. im really excited for this to keep on aging and gaining depth especially from the snake oil. I don’t have anything like it, and it’s very intriguing and special. putting it on gives me the feeling of putting on a well worn comfortable shirt.

    The Disciples

This scent is truly dreamy. It reminds me of the elephant is slow to mate in a lot of ways - but creamy, softer, and more ethereal/soothing, yet still very romantic and sensuous. like taking a spiritually rejuvenating warm milk bath filled with rose petals and other mysterious things in a marble pool in a castle atop mt Olympus surrounded by gods

    Good Ship Venus

When I first got this it mainly smelled to me like a sort of recognizable “aquatic” scent in like medium-low range on the perfumey aquatic scale- so I’d say fairly safe for aquatic sensitives like myself. Kinda 50/50 perfumey/realistic for me. What made it especially unique was the overall poignant wistfulness of the scent as well as something that evokes sea spray to me ~ like sea spray splashing up into your face from a ship cutting through choppy water as you coast through the ocean. It makes me think of that image and feeling, and of like a pirate majestically standing on the bough of a ship deep in reflection and with great purpose as the sun sets in the distance ~ There was a hint of something darker within the spray that nods to the idea of a worn salty romantic ship ~ like dark brown and salt crusted worn wood, the spices and patchouli weren’t really readable to me and more well blended. Its not sludgy-intense thick tarry black as night dark (which is where my mind generally goes to when I think of a dark scent), but it’s a bit dark under the sea spray nonetheless. As it’s rested some months, those romantic ship notes are becoming more prominent to the point that I can pick up on a well blended patchouli hiding within and mingling with cardamom and salted wood. There’s something a little sour-leathery about it after a while, it reminds me vaguely of how some tobacco scents can sit on the skin sometimes for lack of a better comparison, but it never gets out of hand and is intriguing. The sea spray is just as prominent before and looking at the notes i wonder if the black pepper and/or mace maybe add to that “texture” but what do I know ~ The longer I wear it, the tonka starts to peek through the wooden slats ever so slightly, helping to mitigate what wants to turn a little sour on me and weaves through all of the notes like an ethereal airy just barely sweet breeze I can’t quite isolate. It starts to warm and sweeten the darker notes in an airy dry way and the sea spray kind of settles into them but doesn’t disappear. It makes a nice contrast and kinda smells like an elevated version of the sweeter notes in wood when I imagine what wood constantly soaked by ocean water and dried in the sun would smell like. It continues on in this fashion ~ sweetening and warming with the tonka and the base notes keep blooming. I went from a “not so into it” to “would probably like a FS if funds allow” especially now that the deeper notes are becoming more prominent on me as it ages.

    Aureus

The scent of this out of the bottle and when wet is THE scent I’ve been searching for all this time. If I could just get that exact same thing to last somehow… ugh it’s just absolutely beyond perfect. it smells like this resinous deep woody soil laden dusky aged amber with maybe some dark patchouli to me, and somehow evokes like an old glorious decrepit but beautiful church with some golden beams of sunlight peeking through areas of age and erosion, and the little bits of dust floating in them. It makes me think of my favorite scene in FFVII, in the beginning in the church with the little flowers on the ground. once this dries down on my skin it starts to evolve, which for me is unfortunate because the wet version of this is in every way the elusive scent I keep searching and searching for. Is there a scent somewhere in the catalogue that smells just like that and stays that way pretty much? Aaa Something in this starts to smell singed and sour on me a little bit, which makes me think maybe there’s a little vetiver hiding in the mix. My skin chemistry does the most horrifying things to vetiver 99% of the time. I think I might also be getting some Palo santo? which is kinda fighting in a funny way with that sour aspect. The amber starts to warm up and sweeten, and on anyone else’s skin chemistry it would probably smell warm and lovely and resinous, but my skin is taking that maybe vetiver and giving it a singed pickle-ey wood sort of thing up close with increasing intensity. I can smell the lovely warm amber floating around despite it. a really amazing scent that I will probably FS and wear in a locket or something, because it is THE amber of all ambers for me, at least in the beginning : 0 absolutely shocked because I’d never have tried this if it hadn’t come as a frimp in an order. I would have just been all “eh I have so many warm glowy ambers, I want that special amber I keep looking for…” and I’d have totally missed out : p

    Unsubtle Euphemism

This smells like a sweetened “loaf” on me, but with more salty butter, and a little creamier. On my skin the butter doesn’t seem to be sitting right and goes very movie theater popcorn and swallows everything else up. it’s mostly lots of butter and anise leaning rye and a sweet musky husky bread. I am a fan of loaf and how it wears but somehow in this case despite the similarities in notes, it’s not really working on me unfortunately.

    Peach Vulva

I absolutely love this and I’m not even a peach person ~ It starts off with a bright pop of juicy peach that reminds me of juicy hi-chew taffies with a little meatiness of the peach flesh (which I think is the apricots doing) then it gently transitions to more of a very lightly sweetened peach musk as the rice milk takes center stage. The rice milk is one of the more pleasant rice milk accords I’ve smelled ~ it goes way less musky floral than I’ve experienced it in other scents, and smells more realistic to me (although it still has an elevated nature to it that makes it more like a perfume rather than a strict gourmand, but it’s mild) the rice milk is gently spiced with light airy cardamom with a touch of frankincense. I’m not really aware of amber being in here, but I guess it’s helping things along somehow. in short - for most of its wear time it’s like light springy peach musk swimming around in gently spiced thin rice milk (mostly the rice milk on me anyway). It wears very close to the skin and you get little bits of it floating around you ~ very relaxed and uplifting. its refined and a little camp and very much smells like what I’d imagine geishas would wear for an alluring innocent boudoir scent.
