    Mad Sweeney

This was given to me by a friend who loves Gaiman and therefore bought a few of the Carousel scents, but couldn't wear this one. In the bottle--Kentucky Bourbon. I'm a single malt girl and to me this wasn't peaty enough to be Lagavulin.....but it is sweet mash bourbon all the way. On wet....still very alcoholic....woah! On dry down.....clove cigarrette smoke in an oak lined club with a hint of booze in the background! This is a very gothy smell to me. I love it! Not one I'll ever wear to work, but certainly one I'll wear again on the weekends! Thanks Veil!!!

    Hungry Ghost Moon 2006

Oh.....this one is just In the bottle it smelled fruity...kinda like a less potent version of Fire Pig. The minute I put it on my skin I knew I had a winner! I could smell some kind of citrusy grapefruit/lime/green scent immediately (love grapefruit!) and then all sorts of other notes pop up....vanilla, definitly and some very green/herby scents. The drydown brings out the sandalwood a bit more, but not overwhelmingly so. It just becomes a base for the lighter notes to ride....which is nice because I'm hoping sandalwood's staying power helps the lighter notes last. AND the ginger is light and lovely, but not the main note like it is in Shub. The musk is also very light and combines well with the sandalwood in a warm, comforting base. Beautiful! So glad I bought this!!!! Perfect early summer scent! Edit.....furthur dry down info...This stays VERY green smelling. Its an asian type smell that isn't too spicy for me. green AND warm....nice....The grapefruit/citrus smell dissappears for the most part (like it does in everything on me) but there is still enough of it to be noticable.....SCORE!!! And I think the bamboo and aloe help with the "greenness".

    Absinthe

Hmmmmm....I just got my imp from a S&S LJ purchase and it smells nothing like the imp my friends have. Their imp is very anise with a titch of lemon. Mine is MINT, Lemon....and Waaaaaaaaaaay in the background a itty bitty bit of anise. Having had absinthe (both homemade and some weird brand a friend purchased in Japan and smuggled back to the states for me) my friend's imp with the uber anise smell was more correct. Which is not to say that I don't like MY imp! I'm not really a fan of anise as a flavor and ambivilent of it as a scent. Woah!....just resniffed after 10 minutes and yeah....there is the anise! But it blends so well with the mint and lemon I just adore it! Now it DOES smell just like absinthe the liquor....Crazy!--of course this makes me wonder if my friend's imp will smell just like absinthe after dry down or not?.....a question for a future meet and sniff party (and maybe I'll have to scrounge up a homemade absinthe bottle to have at said party....well, you know, just for scent comparision..... Hmmmmm, not something I'll wear often, but nice....very different!

Chaos Theory II : The Butterfly Effect

CCCLXXIV--previously reviewed by yeahboutnobut and filigree_shadow I received this decant from filigree_shadow... In the imp--floral/linen soap On Wet--Still very soapy but in a clean, refreshing way. The floral aspect is a nice midrange floral...not too light, not too heady. Can't pick out quite what the flower is though. Dry down--15-20 minutes...this does have a titch of a citrus/creamy tone, but the linen/floral are the strong notes. This reminds me of laundry fresh out of the dryer. And it seems to be lasting well with average throw. Verdict--This is not a scent I would normally wear, but I DO like it and can see wearing it on those occassions I want a crisp, clean feeling. I'll be keeping this imp...thanks filigree_shadow!!! (she gave it for free!! )

    Fire Pig

Decant from a friend..... I felt like I needed a happy, fruity, bright smell today so I applied....Mmmmmm......fruity goodness....makes my mouth water....smells like grape BubbleYum to me...but since I like that smell all is good. There is also a lush floral behind the fruit (Peony?) About two hours later its vanished off my skin....but...HOORAY! I got my new scent locket today and so it got its first scent pad loaded with Fire Pig. WOAH! YAY! Fire Pig lasts forever in the scent locket! Stays pretty true...though I can smell the bamboo peaking out a bit now (5 hours later). I'm a bit sad I began my bpal addiction JUST too late to get this one in a 5ml....but I did just purchase a bottle of Hungry Ghost Moon from another addict and (due to comparisons here) hope it will be a decent "instead of" scent for when I need to slather.

    Lucy's Kiss

I've decided I like rose scents. Not as much as I like amber, musk and vanilla, but I like them for when I'm feeling girly and fragile. Lucy's Kiss is at once both womanly and innocent....just like the description. The rose is clean and light....not a deep overblown red rose or dried roses (like Zombi) but a soft pink or white rose that has been elegantly pruned and placed in the sitting room of a well to do home. The spices are subtle, but serve as a complex background to make this more than just a "rose" scent. I like Zombi better for my rose needs, but I'll definitly keep this imp!

    Bakeneko

Damn you cinnamon!!!!! This goes all cinnaminty on me....I like it...and may like it better when I'm not so tired...but I'm mildly allergic to cinnamon and this is amping cinnamon like none of the other oils ever have....BAD KITTY!!! I think its the tea note that is making me think 'mint'. I can't let it go just yet.....I want to love it.....maybe if I use it very sparingly???? **Edit**even though I had to wash off my slathering because of the allergic reaction there was still some lingering scent. I put Snake Oil on over top and the blend was very nice. However, I think Bakeneko is a fantastic scent.....I think I'll try it on my long-distance b-friend when next he comes to visit. Its a scent I think would be VERY sexy on a man! ***Edit #2.....even just smelling makes me swell up.....swapped for my new love 13! But if you aren't allergic to cinnamon try this one.....its lovely smelling!!

    Thanatopsis

frimp from the lab....THANK YOU LABBIES!!!! In imp-Pine On wet-Pine and juniper On dry-Pine, juniper and a warmth in the background that must be the musk. As this dries the musk comes out more and blends with the pine. I like this alot.....Makes me think of being in the deep forest with an animalistic state of mind.....might need to be big bottle in the future. Hmmmm....got a bottle of Wolf Moon and it smells very similiar....think I'll hold off on buying Thanatopsis since Wolfy and I are getting along so well.....One pine/musk scent is enough for me, I think!

    Seeking grapefruit advice

I love the smell of Baohban Sith (love the smell of grapefruit)! But it only lasts about an hour on me. Any suggestions for a longer lasting grapefruit heavy scent?

    Anubis

This wasn't one I'd off-the-bat thought of getting, but it was listed cheap in a sale...sooo....what the heck! In the imp--floral incensy--sweet and green florals On wet--green and aquatic with odd floral background Drydown--Old incense (the Gonesh description DOES fit!) sweet and resinous....golden... I like it...not enough to run out and get a bottle, but I'll be wearing this one again.

    Brisingamen

Amber adores me and I adore it! I knew I would love this one. What I didn't anticipate was how strong the carnation would come through! Wow! It makes for very spicey amber! Loving it even more! Will probably have to get a big bottle down the road (after I get over the stress of four big bottles already on their way... ) Sniffs wrist again...yup still spicey, still amber! Love it! Hmmm....my cleavage is amping apple blossom....weird how different body locations bring out different notes. Actually this reminds me very much of a perfume my mother's best friend always wears that I've loved for years...! I'll have to find out what its called.

    Greed

Took this to work last night with a few others and a male co-worker I've been indoctrinating into bpal picked this as one of his three favs of the 8 I had with me. Which is actually really funny because he's said to me in the past that he HATES patchouli! So I talked him into trying some on (he talked me into trying Les Bijoux....because he really liked it in the imp and is thinking about getting some for his girlfriend.) This was fabulous on him! Wow! I kept grabbing his wrist and sniffing him throughout the morning! I even made some of our other co-workers sniff him...LOL! It was wonderful on him! I could definitly smell patchouli, but it was a warm, yummy, golden patchouli...not an overly woody, bitter smell. Funny thing is.....I caught him furtively sniffing his OWN wrist!!! Yeah.....he wants a bottle now!! (and he kept sniffing ME and has decided he must have Les Bijoux for his girlfriend as well!......I'm an evil enabler, I am!)

    Les Bijoux

Just got this in the mail...and ,as I collected my package from the mailbox on the way out the door to work last night, I took it with me.....during my shift I invited my male co-worker whom I've been slowly winning over to BPAL to come sniff all my new smellies! This was one he immediately loved in the bottle so I agreed to apply some for him to smell the changes (he's looking for a new scent for his girlfriend). I talked him into trying Greed on, even though he said he didn't like patchouli---he LOVED Greed on himself, btw....LOL! In bottle--Very floral and expensive smelling. On wet--the orange blossom and rose are heavy (I love orange blossom!)...the second time I applied (after I got home from work) I could really smell the peach as well. The apple is there for me, but faint. Drying down--the honey jumps to the fore and wraps the florals in a warm, gentle embrace. I really am not getting any of the resins at all.....oh, wait.....there was a whiff of frankincense!.....wow! This is really a complex, pretty, VERY femme scent! The throw is strong on me (according to co-workers) so don't need to use much. And......after testing this on four separate male co-workers (as in making them smell it on me, not making them wear it...LOL!), the consensus was that this is a VERY sexy, feminine scent....and the initial co-worker who had me try it on is determined to get a bottle for his girlfriend....and a bottle of Greed for himself (LOL!.....I caught him furtively wrist sniffing when he thought I wasn't looking!!!!) Edit......!@#$#$%$&$%& LAB!!!! MUST NOT ORDER MORE 5MLS!!!!! sigh.....bpal will drive me to bankruptcy!!

    Zombi

I can't tell you how this smells on yet....as I'm too entranced with just sniffing it in the imp to try it.... But let me give you some background... I've been walking down to my busstop since January. These last few weeks as the snow melts the earthy, moist, compost smell has really started to appear. I also walk right past my city's cemetary.....and the newest graves are right along the fence line where I walk (in fact, right before the time change I was walking past in the dark---I work graveyard hours....LOL!----and there was a new grave with a lit candle burning beside it....very eerie! ) So I've been smelling a particular scent of earth and cemetary floral arrangements for a couple of months now......AND thinking of how wonderful it would be if someone could capture this scent in a bottle....Heh! And then....a few weeks ago I encountered BPAL for the first time and thought...."if ANYONE could/would!!!!" So my latest online purchase of imps arrived this Monday and Zombi was one. Imagine my suprise when I opened the bottle to sniff and THAT EXACT SMELL that I had been longing for in a bottle....WAS IN A BOTTLE!!!!!! I'm actually kind of scared to try it on.....as I don't want it to morph and dissappoint me.....so bear with me and I'll edit later if I do gain the courage to try it on my skin.... Am sucking up and trying on! Wet on skin--Wow! where did all the roses come from and where is the dirt? Drying down--The roses have settled in...not too obnoxious....more a dry, dusty floral...the mosses are a nice background. On my wrists its mostly rose....on my elbows there is still that "dirt/loam" scent YAY! Response--not quite the heady earth scent it is in the bottle, but it is a rose scent that I can wear without feeling too icky/girly/floral! Green moss, dry wild rose, a foresty wild scent! I like this..will probably have to get more....sigh..... Just ordered a 5ml of this....the throw is incredible and this lasts forvever on me.....very different from what I usually wear, but very, very unforgettable!

    Baobhan Sith

From online sale....no idea what vintage this is.... In imp.....Grapefruit and a whiff of something floral. On Wet.....Grapefruit and the floral now smells just like lilacs to me. Fresh lilacs like the rain washed ones I used to pick off the bush for my mother when I was a little girl and we had bushes of them in our yard! Yum! Same realistic floral smell....even get a hint of the woodyness of the branches..........sigh....I LOVE this! and I'm not even a big floral fan! Not smelling ginger at all. The grapefruit fades....shame as I'm a big fan of grapefruit, but I love the floral smell. Dry down....lilac smell lasts about an hour and then vanishes! Huh!? Where'd it go? I caught whiffs of floral from my clothes here and there throughout the night....but no scent left on my skin at all! Not even a trace! WAAAAAAAA!!!!! Verdict...I LOVE this scent and it is a perfect spring scent, but it vanishes almost immediately. I might have to get a scent locket JUST for this scent alone!!!

    Pumpkin Queen

Bought a decanted imp for a co-worker who wanted a spicey fall scent, but *shifty eyes* had to try it myself... In bottle- warm, spicy, foody Wet- pumpkin pie and whip cream Dry down-all sorts of spice and amber with pumpkin still in the background. I'm SO craving pumpkin pie right now! YUMMY! I'm getting more of this for ME....yeah, you're damn right I am!!!! Sigh....I just want to lick my wrists right now, but I know that wouldn't taste anywhere NEAR as good as this smells! Edit....eeeeee! got my own big bottle!!!! Yay! And this does remind me a bit of Shub....just not as lemony/ginger. (yeah....I've got a big bottle of Shub on the way also...sigh.....)

    Springtime scents

I know its suppossedly a SUMMER scent, but Litha smells like spring to me....all light and flowers and yummy honey sweetness! To me summer smells like coconut and heavy fruits..... so a good summer scent for me would be Aglaea (peach and amber!)! which I just tried last night and may have to order a big bottle of....sigh.....

    Red Lantern

Mine's a decant and I think its 2006 version. In bottle-caramel/boozy Wet--warm, rummy, caramel, coconut and tobacco--almost too sweet though.. Drying down--more tobacco smell and something whitish beneath...maybe the white in the white opium? A crispness beneath the heady spice/caramel Dry for awhile (4 hours?) Nice! Not so boozy....the caramel has blended nicely with the tobacco and coconut to produce a warm, soft, comforting smell. I think the amber is helping out there as well. There is an undertone of fruit...Yum! Throw-strong I don't know if I want this in a big bottle, but it will definitly find its way back on my pulse points when I need a naughty, spicey smell!
  19. bulletslc

    Aglaea

WOW! Peach! In the bottle-just peach! On wet--peach with a hint of soft amber behind drying down--more amber, but the peach stays very strong I put this on last night before bed and every time I woke up I could smell peaches. The throw seemed very good and when I woke up today I could smell the musk beneath the amber with just a hint of the peach sweetening up the mix. It has still hung in there until just now when I applied again to get a good "wet" scent so as to be accurate in my review. I really like this one. Wasn't sure how I would feel about the peaches on....but it is summery and lovely! I think I'll save the rest of this one to wear later in the summer when it gets warmer. **Edit**bought a big bottle of this one.

    Shub-Niggurath

Dammit! I did not need ANOTHER oil I MUST have as a bottle!!!! imp reccommended and sent by LJ friend.... In bottle....LEMON (and ginger peeking over lemon's shoulder and grinning evilly) Wet....MORE LEMON....but now ginger is dancing behind the lemon and just knowing its time is coming.... Dry down....Initially this smells exactly like Florida Water ( an old perfume blend used in Cuban Santeria)....I LOVE Florida water! It is citrusy/tangy, spice! Further dry down.....the lemon has left the playing field and ginger and the other spices are settling in for some long term foody goodness. If there were even a hint of pumpkin here I would swear it was my mother's pumpkin bread! Verdict.....arghhh! This will definitly have to be a full bottle in the future! Luckily for my budget I have more than enough smells (both here and on the way) to keep me satisfied...but I think I'll have to get a bottle of this by next fall....this is a perfect October/November scent! **Edit.....got a bottle....not like my imp much! I think my imp is the old LE version. Still that heady cinnamon, clove, ginger smell, but the lemon is WAY far off in the background and the warm roundness is missing. Maybe this will age well....but I think the lemon is a lost cause. Okay....dry down does bring out a more warm "cookie" scent....but the spices are still WAY too strong in this. I like it....just not as much as my little impy. **Edit #2.....yes it ages well! One of my top ten!

Allergy Questions, Allergies and other reactions to oils

Had an allergic reaction to Snake Oil yesterday, but I think it was because I'd just scrubbed off another oil with hot water and soap. The reaction was limited to my inner elbows and was basicallly just mild stinging with red spots. Due to the way my inner elbows distort scents I think I'm going to stop applying there anyway. I've decided to use wrist pulse points, back of hand, neck, cleavage and sometimes hair (if I really, really want the scent to linger). Shub just made me a bit tingly too...but no discoloration and it also went away shortly. I'm pretty sure its probably the ginger.

SHEESH! Nobody's mentioned Kali yet!!! Spicy, incensy goodness!

    Phantom

In the bottle-ylang ylang...that's all I'm smelling. Wet-ylang ylang and rose (with the ylang ylang still prevalent) and a dark smokey base which I'm guessing is the myrrh. Dry down- on my wrists its gone ultra sweet light musk. In my elbow creases its pure rose attar! (Funny how each pulse point amps a different scent!) Verdict--I like this. Its a floral I can wear without it being TOO sweet and cloying. I like rose and the ylang ylang mellows out on my skin. I don't know that I'll get a bottle of it, but I'll definitly keep the imp and use it for those ultra femme days.

    Psyche

Recieved as frimp from lab. In bottle--lavender and not much else. Wet--lavender and rose....titch of light musk in the background Dry down--Musk comes out more and the frankincense is lightly present. Throw--I definitly could smell this wafting about in the first couple of hours. Later in the dry down it hugs closer. Doesn't last as long as the darker scents I have. I applied before bed and the lavender was WONDERFUL for inducing sleep. I noted the transitions of the scent everytime I woke up a bit. Upon waking this morning all I was left with was a hint of floral musk. I'll definitly keep this if for nothing else but helping me sleep. I also think I'll ambush a friend with it. She loves lavender and frankincense!

    Smut

Argh! I wish I hadn't read the reviews that mentioned peanut butter!!! I LOVE Smut! I got an original bottle (2005? I think?) from ebay and was in immediate lust! So I just ordered a 2007 bottle...hoping it is close to the same... I didn't smell peanut butter before the other reviews, but now....must turn off mental association!!! I love the musk/sweetness. And thankfully the peanut butter issue doesn't stick around too long. Woozy.....yes.....and throw?....oh HEAVENS yes....more throw than anything else I've tried. AND it lasts and lasts. (I went to bed the other night, pulled up the covers and THERE WAS SMUT!!! It had gotten on the bedsheets and was lying in wait for me... ) This scent is a musk lover's dream come true! *edit** Wore some to work and a co-worker asked what I was wearing and said I smelled like spicy incense! ....so the throw, I'd say, is very good. Edit for 2007 review......Definitly age this one! The new bottle is very much more sharp and peanut buttery than the old bottle I got on ebay! I can see how aging this changes it. I'll definitly be hoarding the new bottle until it is worthy and using my old bottle for scenting. ADDED March 17: Just ordered big bottles of Shub and Smut 2007....so will have to try that! ADDED March 18: Let it set for awhile and who knows....this is a scent made to age well...... Well, my co-worker thought it smelt like the incense used in a hippy/new agey store....so I can see how your mom would think that....but I'm with YOU.....this is sexy, boozy, night on the town stuff!!!
