    Decadence

When first on, this smelled almost exactly like Hawaiian punch--you know, the nice bright red kind you make from frozen concentrate. Which actually was not too bad. Then a spicier mix emerged: some red-hot cinnamon coming through. Ended up similar to Hamadryad, on me; a Christmas-candle sort of smell, but with more edible qualities and fewer florals. Pleasant! Will at least play with the imp again.

    Hamadryad

Lots of cinnamon, absolutely. But it didn't overwhelm my nose with "red hots!!" the way Tintagel did. It smelled quite like a spice-scented holiday candle, actually. There's a rather sophisticated floral emerging after a few hours. I enjoy the mix, at least enough to use the Imp again. Would be a good one to wear to a Christmas party.

    Morocco

Sugar cookie dough. With a few spices. That's mostly what I'm getting - and actually, I rather like it, which surprises me since I'm not into "foody" fragrances. I think it's just subtle and warm enough to make it pleasant. My main complaint, really, is that on me it's too subtle - just not as exciting as I look for in a fragrance. But I think I'll keep the Imp around and try it a few more times. It's certainly nice enough for that.

    Hellfire

I'm noticing some leatheriness that I like, after an hour or two of drydown, but the initial stages of this one are too "fiery" for me. Rather than smelling tobacco, I get a slightly acrid scent reminiscent of those scorching summer days when there's wildfire smoke in the air. Gave me that same unsettling feeling. In that sense it's an impressive accomplishment--the Lab is always great at capturing an "experience"!--but it probably isn't one I'll hang onto. There are other leathery and tobacco-y scents I love, which I can rely on instead.

    Velvet

Envelop yourself in the soft, sensual embrace of gentle sandalwood warmed by cocoa vanilla and a veil of deep myrrh. Once again I end up with the strangest nose and/or chemistry... to me this smelled almost nothing like Vice (which smelled mostly like bubblegum on me), but very very close to Bliss. However, I prefer Velvet - in fact I think it may be my favorite chocolate scent so far! I do sense the dusty-wood note, but I like it. It grounds the foodiness just enough that I might actually want to order more of this one. (Despite being a chocoholic I haven't quite decided whether I want to *smell* like chocolate at all times...) Quite yummy. Good work!

    Scherezade

Hmm, maybe I'm the odd one out, but I don't think this smells at all like Old Morocco. (Or just plain "Morocco" now, right?) On me Scherezade smells almost identical to Dragon's Heart, believe it or not. Has that same juicy, coppery, wine-like note--is that the red musk? I like it, same as I like Dragon's Heart: makes me feel exotic, like someone else entirely. Many of the scents with that juicy-cherry-almond undertone don't work for me, but those two I do enjoy enough to hang onto the Imps. Very intriguing! Can see why it's a favorite for so many.

Pretty much pure cedar on me. I like cedar very much, so that's fine - it's clean and bracing, and reminiscent of standing in a lumberyard on a brisk winter day. However, for a similar woodsiness I think I prefer Anne Bonny, which has a delightful wicked sensual streak. After all, for a regular daily fragrance I want something a bit sexier, not something that makes me think, "Hm, smells like a cedar-filled dog bed."

Oh, wow. I really, really like this. Leather balanced perfectly with citrus & tea - and somehow, for some reason, every time I sniff at it, my mind puts me in Great Britain. Is it the tea? Is it the elegance? Is it reminiscent of a lemon-scented furniture polish I used when working in a hotel in Scotland? I'm not sure, but it makes me very happy. Definitely want a bigger bottle. (Though I do wish it weren't *quite* so subtle...)

    Wilde

Unlike the other BPAL scents I've tried so far, I'd say this one could easily pass for a department-store fragrance. Granted, that could be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the fragrance, and your personal point of view. But to me at least it smells like a NICE department-store fragrance. Also, though the "masculine" BPAL scents have seemed perfectly wearable and gender-neutral on me before--for instance, Jolly Roger is just aggressively clean on me and not masculine at all--Wilde definitely strikes me as a men's cologne. It smells very much like one of the newer, fresher, expensive herbal-citrus fragrances for men out there. Reminds me of browsing the high-end duty-free fragrance shops at Heathrow Airport, to be specific. It's worldly and sophisticated and modern. Not sure I'd wear it much myself, but if you know a guy who likes one of those scents, you could probably save a bundle by switching him from his overpriced brand name to Wilde, and still have him smell delicious.

    Leo

Pleasantly clean and refreshing - sandalwood soapiness with a hint of lime LifeSavers. (I could see Skittles too.) I don't normally care for the "candy" scents, but this one's candy-like qualities are subtle enough that I'm finding it very pleasant. It seems to be fading fast, unfortunately, but I could see myself purchasing more of it. How convenient that Leo is actually my sign!

The description of this one is dead-on, for me. Started out pure spice-rack, like I'd dusted my arm with ground ginger and black pepper. A little strange, but not bad. Within an hour or so, the frankincense (smelled just like Catholic-mass incense) emerged to balance it. A dry, intriguing fragrance. I could see it being unisex. Not sure yet if it's for me, but I'm enjoying sniffing at it all the same!

The rich scent of wild blackberry breezing over gentle rosy heather. I had high hopes for this one, as a big fan of Scotland, and BPAL has not let me down! This is sweet but not oversweet, calm, thoughtful, feminine but not "girly", and slightly wild. The mix of notes puts me in mind of blackberry jam enjoyed in a forest, with a freshly laundered blanket to sit on and a bouquet of wildflowers nearby. I also envision gray skies and a cool breeze, but maybe I'm just suggestible, thinking of Scottish weather. I feel so soothed when sniffing this! May need a bigger bottle indeed. Yum!

    Anne Bonny

Mmm! I normally don't care for patchouli much, but it takes the back seat here and acts as a wonderful supporting character, so to speak. I mostly am getting cedarwood in this, which I happen to love. As such, it reminds me more of an old wooden building than a pirate ship, but I bet it would layer quite well with Jolly Roger (one of my absolute favorites). I get the impression, overall, of a dark rustic wooden church in a conifer forest, with perhaps some shady characters running around in the shadows. They could be pirates, on shore leave - why not? Think this may warrant a big bottle, if the husband likes it! Would also make a good room scent. Big thumbs-up.

    Jolly Roger

Arrr! You perfumers are geniuses. You captured salt air and leather and worn planks and rum, and somehow stuffed it into this teeny little vial. Says it's more a masculine scent, but I'd happily wear it. It just smells clean and exciting on me. Pirates. Yum. But I warn you, if you're tempted to buy some: this is not a genteel, sophisticated, romanticized impression of the salt air and the open sea. This is sharp and resinous and wild and real. It would surely not be for everyone. But if you like the smell of those creaking old ships they let you tour at some ports, where the ocean spray is misting over the decks - or if you want to smell like Will Turner might have (if 'Pirates of the Caribbean' had been anything remotely resembling reality) - then I recommend giving it a try. I ordered more after testing the Imp. It was my favorite by far. Also, I went down to the waterfront (I live near Puget Sound) while wearing some, and compared: I sniffed the genuine salt air, then sniffed my wrist, and yep, they blended quite well. Fabulous job!

    Loviatar

Oh, heck yeah! Leather, baby! Reminds me of the smell of a sexy new leather jacket, or a well-preserved car from the '70s with leather interior, or a swank retro-style bachelor's lounge with leather sofas and pipe tobacco lingering in the air. Doesn't give me dominatrix vibes really, but does make me feel relaxed and sultry and hip. In fact, on me it smells rather like Jolly Roger, which has its fair share of leather too--but Jolly Roger is more about the salt air and the rum, whereas Loviatar is about (did I mention?) the leather, and is for the city-slicker swingers rather than the pirates. Yummm to both! Two thumbs up!
