    Mouth So Sweet, So Poisonous

Gorgeous plummy opium incense. I agree there's something almost like rose, like the throatiness of a really deep velvety rose. I also agree with the spooky Lady Una vibes, the honey has that musky quality, but it's not as sweet and honey-forward as that scent is on me. This is really about those delicious dark fruits and opium. So sultry!

    Moroccan Pumpkin

Gorgeous lightly spiced pumpkin in the bottle. Smooth, warm this is probably the best pumpkin scent I've tried yet. Morocco is definitely the heart of this scent, but the pumpkin really transforms it into something autumnal. Once settled the pumpkin blends nicely into the vanilla and musk, still detectable but more in balance with the scent as a whole. Beautiful!

    Berzerker

@zankoku_zen summed it up well with forest musk. Cool green with warm, musky leather. The juniper and poplar are more prominent than the leather, then it swaps on my skin. I get a slight metallic tang underneath, but it's quite pleasant. Really great forest scent!

All While Dreaming, Shakes Her Head

In the bottle I get a beautiful fruity, velvety red rose with just a teensy hint of the patchouli. On my skin they are much more in balance. A beautiful woody (but not super-gnarly) patch base with velvety red rose. It is hard for me to pick the currant apart from the rose, it smells like one of those red roses that has a juicy, fruity sort of facet. Elegant, with a darkness.

    Still Life With Dooting Skull

Yeah this smells more like sasparilla than licorice to me. Which is fine! Licorice/anise tends to turn my stomach for some reason, and this was gamble. I am pleased. In the bottle and on my skin it is a super-dry spiced (must be the nutmeg) rootbeer. Like something you'd get in a fancy, hisptery cocktail bar. Not that it's boozy, just not sweet enough to be like soda. On my skin it gets a wee bit sweeter and more creamy though I'm having a hard time picking out coconut. It's a really delicious scent, much cozier than I had anticipated. ETA: after resting a little over two weeks, the licorice note is a little less sasparilla and more licorice. To me it smells like a mix of the two, and I still really like it!
  6. In the bottle I get a gentle, creamy jasmine that quickly transforms into a cool green scent, with a soft incense blurring it all together. On wet the greenness is the first thing I get and I can sort of pull the eucalyptus from the cypress, but they meld really well. This isn't sharp, camphor-y straight eucalyptus EO. It's soft and cool. As it dries the greenness fades back into a soft halo around the scent. Nothing really sticks out as the star of the show when dry, it's all very well blended. The paper, incense, and florals are all present but are in harmony. It's a soft floral incense with the flutter of old pages (not a cucumber-y paper note but a flash of soft sort of woodiness) with just a breath of that cool greenness. A really gorgeous, enchanting scent.

My first thought when sniffing this in the imp was just how classic BPAL this is. It has a dark, murky, incense in a lot of the early GCs. It has this quality to it that reads as distinctly BPAL to my brain. As for notes in the imp I get a dark musky lavender incense, and on wet I get sandalwood specifically. It's smooth and the woodiness gives the scent some heft. As it dries I'm fairly certain I can detect some saffron. I never pick up the plum, but that can happen with my skin. In the end it's a lovely, inky, lavender-sandalwood-saffron incense on me, mysterious and tranquil.

    Beholder Optician

In the imp and on wet this is a candy-sweet strawberry with a whirl of white amber. Candy sweet, but not artificial like strawberry tends to go on me. As it dries it definitely has a cool, glassy quality at the edges and the sweetness is dialled down just a bit. I could detect a little citrus but couldn't pin it, but the pink bergamot note is lovely and melds so well and gives it a zing. I can't pin the eucalyptus or the vanilla musk specifically, but I can definitely tell they are playing a part. I'm having a hard time describing the scent with the cohesion it has on my skin, I think @Casablanca description of candied strawberries under a sheer, gossamer drape best depicts it. Strawberry is not a note I wear at all, but this is so lovely and actually plays so well on my skin.

Gift Recommendations for New to BPAL

Hmmm I'm having trouble thinking of a (readily available) atmosphere spray, perhaps Trackless Erg? I haven't tried it but lots of people get sandalwood. For perfume, Pyramid of Skulls from this year's Weenies could work: A blend of four sandalwoods stained by tobacco absolute. Thinking of sandalwood Monk also came to mind: Sandalwood incense, ti leaf, and honeyed saffron. As well as The White Rider: White leather and sandalwood. For citrus I think of Baobhan Sith: Grapefruit, white tea, apple blossom and ginger.

    Dance of Death

In the imp this is dark and syrupy. Not that it's sweet, but it just has that viscous, rich quality to my nose. I can get the black musk and myrrh in particular. On my skin I get the patchouli, making the blend much earthier, to me it is a somewhat gnarly patch. Not the gnarliest, but a bit dirty. I'm having a hard time picking out the orris but I'm getting a hint of the weird musty-sweetness it tends to turn to on me. The rest of the scent is quite interesting, shadowy but rich. Unfortunately orris just doesn't agree with me!

    Water of Notre Dame

In the imp this is a light sweet, juicy green scent with a faint herbal tinge. On my skin it becomes more floral, an aquatic sort of floral. I want to say lily. It's very floaty and beautiful.

    Robin Goodfellow

In the imp this is shadowy and mossy, a bit prickly. Like crawling through the underbrush. As it dries I can pick out more particulars, mostly the sage. It also gets more woody. Overally a really great forest scent, if you like lots of moss as well. It's a bit damp, and has a good balance of wood and greenness. The musk makes it really interesting, really gives it a shadowy vibe that I love.

    Block Buster

In the imp I got a soft spicy herbal honey scent. On my skin it becomes more cider-like. Softly sweet and spiced. Really pleasant

    French Tickler Hair Gloss

Spiked for your pleasure: protrusions of pomegranate and pink peppercorn. This is absolutely beautiful! At first it is just juicy, dark pomegranate that is just a little bit tart. As it dries it gets sweeter, almost syrupy (in a very good way) and more sultry. It reminds me a lot of the Black Pomegranate SN. I get a halo of the fresh, floral qualities of the pink pepper, though it is very well blended with the pomegranate.

    Al-Shairan

In the imp I get a dark spiced incense with a bit of earthy patchouli. The fruit doesn't come out for me until application and even then is very faint. The clove really takes off for me as it dries, becoming a smoldering clove incense. If I sniff deeply I can get a hint of orange underneath.

    Plunder

In the imp this is all dry, sharpish, spice. I get mostly the cinnamon and clove. It's the nice soft, sweet cinnamon. On my skin the clove calms down a bit and I can pick out some of the other spices, namely allspice and nutmeg and I get a little sandalwood. Overall the blend gets softer (not in terms of strength!) and a bit sweeter. As it dries further I get tobacco, it's not the dominant note but definitely giving a round base for all the spice to play on. Really delicious.

    Shattered

Glassy. It's a clean, sharp (in a pleasant way), aquatic. There's just a hint of chill, not screaming mint but definitely a coolness. In the imp it's hard to pull apart the notes, but I can detect some bitterness from the grapefruit though if I didn't know it was there I'm not sure I could identify it. On my skin it opens up a bit more, I get a little more mint, though it is a soft mint still. I get a bit of that minerally sort of champagne note, not distinctly fizzy but clean and buoyant. Really lovely and refreshing scent.

    La Petite Mort

I get a dark velvety myrrh beeswax with a cloud of ylang ylang around it. Maybe a bit of amber or black musk (I know those two are very different but I'm getting a hint of the dark snuggliness I get from Haunted but can't pinpoint why). Soft, sultry, and inviting. I didn't get an assosciation myself with O prior to reading reviews but I can sort of see the connection.
  19. Welcome back! Some things off the top of my head you might look into: Beholder Optician (GC, impable): eucalyptus leaf, white amber, pink bergamot, strawberry, and sheer, crystalline vanilla musk. Zorya Polunochnaya (American Gods) : Pale amber and ambergris, gossamer vanilla, moonflower, and white tobacco petals. Eat the Strawberries (American Gods): Strawberries, fresh-picked. Ava (Only Lovers Left Alive): sheer vanilla musk with tuberose, red mandarin, and the sweet poison of white almond. Bawd (Independant Shakespeare): Raucous red velvet musk, sweet patchouli, billowing peony, bourbon vanilla, and a cascade of red rose petals. O Spirit of Love (Independant Shakespeare): Effervescent rose chypre and bourbon vanilla. Some LEs that could fit the bill but might require more hunting: Perfectly Normal Childhood: spun sugar, vanilla marshmallows, cardamom, and cake batter. 2004: Paper Phoenix : A memory of Antique Lace, Formula 54s pink pepper, and a splash of Dorian's white tea and lavender fougere. There's been several duets and menage a trois blends that have featured coconut in the past year or two that have coconut and might be worth tracking down! Ghost Faced Bat: Sugared coconut meat, vanilla pods, condensed milk, white honey, and benzoin. Libra 2016: The strawberries and roses of Venus gilded and polished into an urbane, elegant perfume by sheer white musk, mallow oudh, white incense, bourbon vanilla, red benzoin, and polished woods.

    Black Lotus

I was hoping to see a different side to lotus here but it still smells like bubblegum in the imp to me. I was also wondering why I was thinking of medicine and saw the amoxicillan reference above. On my skin however the bubblegum does die down. Still sweet and sort of waxy, the myrrh and amber make it more sultry.

    Pain

Really chilly mintiness in the imp, with a softness underneath. On my skin it is more green and herbal, but still very chilly. As it dries the lavender creeps into view, but the pennyroyal is what I sniff first still. Very refreshing scent.

    Al Azif

In the imp I get a super dry, woody incense. I think it might be a really dry sandalwood, like the Australian Sandalwood SN from sometime back. It's almost cedary. I get something bright at the edges, maybe lemon? On my skin it's smoother, less splintery wood. Still with a faint citrus edge. Reading other reviews I'm seeing almond, and I could see that. Not cherry-almond on me but a nuttier, creamier one. This aspect is well-melded into the woodiness for me. A really interesting and pleasant scent.

    Defututa

In the imp I get the delicate osmanthus blooms, breezy and a touch fruity, with a sheer dry vanilla and a touch of honey. On my skin the jasmine comes in and the scent gets more of a incensy base, I assume from the sandalwood and champaca (which isn't going sharp on me!). Still in the delicate realm. Incensy yet with a freshness from the osmanthus. The honey has a mellow sweetness and depth that with the vanilla really blends the two realms. Gorgeous.

    Lurid

In the imp I get a sweet, fresh aquatic. It's hard for me to pick out notes but it's clean in a soft way. On my skin it gets sweeter and less crisp, and more floral and fruity, and while I can pin black currant I can't identify the lavender. Something about the white musk and currant smells a bit like a light crisp apple as well, or there is a hint here. Really pleasant scent.

    Opium Poppy

This stays pretty much the same from imp to skin. Thin wispy floral poppy with a light incensy opium. Mysterious and has a draws-you-in quality.
