  1. Hi! I hope this is the right place. If I have two samples of an oil & they're different colors, is it most likely a batch difference or is one probably just older than the other? Which one would you keep?

It could be either. I have noticed ambers tend to become redder as they age. I started writing the dates when I receive imps on the labels so I could compare how they age.

  2. I want MOAAAR Ozone...

But, is this wishful thinking on my part? I'm not sure I've even smell the ozone I'm jonesing for in my one ozoney scent - Lightning. I adore my Lightning, but it reminds me mostly of rain, which is great, but lacks actual lightning. But what I really want is that electricity slashing through ozone. A tangy burning. Maybe I can layer something on top of my lightning to get that added punch that I seek?

I want the smell of getting too close to one of those old CRT TVs. I want the sharp electricity of lightning cutting through in the air. I want to smell...electricity, I guess? Is it really electricity I'm looking for?

Every time I review ozoney scents, people keep mentioning dryer sheets, so I'm wary of trying ozone heavy scents. How would you describe the lab's ozone? Does any lab scent have a true ozone feel?

Any recs for the most electric/ozone scent - even if "ozone" or that feeling isn't the lab's intent?

Thunder Moon, I think 09 or maybe 07. It has rain and petrichor but ozone too, if you can find a bottle that hasn't aged out. Fresh Lurid too, if you don't mind lavender and musk of the white variety.

  3. Wet, blood musk takes the lead. I may amp it to be fair. I can't say I've ever smelled Black frankincense but this is more airy than Smoky, but it's definitely incense. The labdanum is a supportive note rather than a dominatrix. There is a hint of blood, no entrails or DBR, it's restrained.

Drying down, this is a resin lover's dream: seamless frankincense, red musk, and labdanum base notes. This is earthy rather than woody, not dirty.

The sillage is modest but this lasts a long time, equal parts musk and resins and well past 8 hours. Full bottle, come to mama!

  4. Wet, this is very, very vetiver forward. Only fans of vetiver will likely persevere past the opening. No smoke or BBQ sauce here, this vetiver is green, rooty, syrupy.

Early drydown the tobacco overtakes the vetiver, and gritty is an apt descriptive. This is dried tobacco leaves, sans smoke or any sweetness to tamper the grit. This lacks the zippy pepper note from Grievous Swarm, so the evolution is gradual rather than oscillating, but the scent progresses and the comparison is reasonable. If you liked the grittiness of the tobacco in Grievous, you'll like this. It's dry and menacing.

Late drydown, this is the resin festival you'd predict from the notes. I usually amp myrrh, but it's behaved here, just providing support. The labdanum and oudh are woody and merge with the tobacco note. Stems and Dried leaves are suggested. This is definitely unisex but not so masculine as to deter the ladies, assuming that they hung in after the vetiver top.

All in all, masterful. I am considering a bottle but I think I prefer Interfector or Swarm. I may try layering this with French Vanilla for s&g's. Considering my obsession with the number 23, this will probably be a FB purchase.

Agree with ZZ, this has impressive sillage and it lasted well past 8 hours.

  5.

Forgive me if this has already been mentioned, but does anyone know of an oil that is similar to Juliette Has A Gun's not a Perfume? I recently got a sample of this stuff and it's absolutely gorgeous, but my skin just eats the stuff and only lasts but a few minutes. I can't justify the hefty $100+ price tag if I have to slather myself in it (I'd rather wear Bpal anyway!)

It is a single note perfume that is apparently just cetalox and nothing else. I've contemplated buying come cetalox and dissolving it in some everclear on the stove to make my own dupe, but I am very clumsy and definitely not a chemist, and don't want to risk burning the house down!

Single Note Ambergris is close, not that it is easy to find but I have seen it for sale here and Facebook sales.

Y'Ha Nthlei has extra notes but I like it and find it a kissing cousin to SN Ambergris...

    HTH

I literally JUST bought a bottle of Ambergris over the weekend from someone here on the forum - I'm really looking forward to trying it out. I'm definitely going to have to get my hands on some Y'Ha Nthlei too, thank you for the suggestions!

    Any time

  7. OK, my fellow Lilac Lovers, time to bump this thread.

My favorite Lilac scents follow but I am compelled to ask if there are moar:

    His Station and 4 Aces

    Lysander

    The Lilac Wood

    Dragon's Eye

    Blood Countess

I would love to get my paws on a Blue Lilac SN or just sniff one

  8. I am pretty sure that there is Musk in this as well as a raw, broken in leather. This smells like bridle after you left it overnight in the barn and riding the day before. Like the sweat from the horses has seasoned the leather.

I think I will be buying back ups. This really brings me back to memories of riding horses with my aunt.

  9. Recently I received a purchase from Ralenth with goodies in it! She included a 'Mystery' imp that I think said it was bpal? Maybe? That or just a mystery all in all lol

To me BPAL has a pretty distinct smell and it seems like it probably was a bpal oil(I'll have to check the label again).

I would love to know what this might be!

It smells EXACTLY like shoving your nose into a trick or treat bag filled with a mish mosh of all kinds of candies and goodies. First sniff I almost thought it was Giljagaur! Then upon further huffing it reminded me a bit of my yummy and cozy The Inn goblin squirt!

I cannot even begin to pick out notes in it! I'm not that good, I just know it smells really delicious!

    Any ideas?

I've never had the pleasure of smelling the SN: Last Year's Stale Candy Corn but this is how I would imagine it!

    Sticky Pillowcase?

  10. Resurrecting this thread because I'm suddenly craving a perfect Easter morning scent. Something with warming earth, new greens, dewy florals (fingers crossed for early spring bulbs like daffodils, hyacinth, or tulip)...maybe even with a hint of candy? Fresh but not high-pitched, loud, or (god-forbid) soapy. Early reviews for "Qui Aime Bien Châtie Bien" look promising but I'd love other suggestions!

My vote would be for the Lilith scent: Give Me Thy Breath, My Sister 2015

Alternates: Heel (2016 Lilith), Muse of Fire

  11. So, here's a bit of a puzzle--my skin chemistry and amber. For the most part I've just started avoiding it because when it's bad it's really overpowering and makes me feel ill. I think I must amp it but not in a good way.

However, several of my favorites/almost favorites have a prominent amber note. There doesn't seem to be much pattern to it, either; excluding grey amber(/ambergris, which isn't real amber) there's not a color of amber that I can consistently wear. Four Seasons: Winter and Mouse's Long and Sad Tale are both delightful, and O isn't bad, but Road to Versailles at Louveciennes, Black Rider, and Coyote are all awful on me (Anubis is also on this list, but amber isn't listed as a note so I'm not sure).

Does anyone have advice/suggestions for what I should try or avoid, or is it going to continue to be hit and miss?

It's possible that aging process is making some Amber wearable for you. I usually love White, grey (ambergris), and pale amber fresh or aged. Nonspecific Amber, usually doesn't smell good for me until it hits 18 to 24 months.

I figured this out by comparison of fresh versus aged Mouse's Long and Sad Tale.

I also don't enjoy Amber during Shark week (menses). After that, it goes back to smell good again. Unaged or on Shark week, it smells musty and powdery.

TMI probably, but may be my over sharing will help you figure it out. Because Amber is beautiful. If the right kind, good age, right time of the month. Notice I didn't mention Black Amber because I'm still trying to figure it out. Pink and Green Amber, I like. White and Grey, I love. Tunisian, Egyptian, Golden, I love with aging.

Some notes, for example, rose, I've learned that I have to try a decant each and every unique blend because I can never predict if it will work on my skin chemistry. And, I have to test at different times of my cycle just to be sure I'm not missing anything.

  12. I loved The Inexorable Finger. Anyone have other Patch + Oude recommendations? Especially if a resin or two shows up to the party.

    Fluerettes Purple Snails:The Dream

    Ganymede (Moons of Jupiter)

    Nasty Woman

    Spider Witch

    A Shadow in the Elevator

    Depart pour Le Sabbat

    Of the Unicorn

    Phoenix and Dragon

    The Imperfect Enjoyment

The Devil's Pet Baits (Sherlock Holmes, Blue Carbuncle)

    Bath oil: Hidden Purpose

  13. Holy Coca Cola. I finally understand what you guys mean when you say a scent smells like cola.

This is resin heaven. Which is appropriate if I think about it. I can't really tease out any notes except Opium, which varies between peppery floral and hairspray and the Coca-Cola resin, that I'm guessing is opoponox or labdanum, or perhaps both. Wet, it has a fizzy quality, like a carbonated beverage!

The Opium note disappeared on drydown and I was left with a sweet resin buzz. I have a hard time describing but it's fuzzy and plush, like black velvet.

I need multiple bottles and I really want to know what note smells like Coca-Cola incense.

  14. Cumin and grape give me pause, however, someone kindly gave me a sample imp, well aged, I'm guessing it's the 2008 version?

It's identifiable as champagne when wet, not grapey as I feared.

Early wet to dry phase, the frankincense and myrrh come to the champagne party. I also detect a metallic note, could it be the gold?

Drying, the ambergris is apparent and ties all these notes together seamlessly. I don't appreciate any coriander or Cumin, but I can't say I've smelled those singly.

Drydown phase is a beautiful ambergris and vanilla bean, lovely, ethereal.

Being the ambergris whore, I must say this is going to be a full bottle purchase. I just hope that the 2016 ages to become the masterpiece that I received in frimp.

  15. My first thought at sniffing the bottle was, "Gluttony, is it you?" Granted, I hadn't sniffed Gluttony in years, but this has a passing similarly on first sniff.

It is not a Gluttony dupe but this is a delicious foodie creation. I can see the Boo minus the linen note comparison (to be fair, I get no cream either) and the Rice Krispy treats association.

Initially, wet, this was very buttery with caramel and vanilla mainly.

Drying it was pretty consistent, little morphing, mostly marshmallows and caramel. I didn't pick up any fudge or chocolate, maybe there's a batch variant? No chocolate sludge in the oil itself. Maybe I didn't roll the bottle thoroughly, however, I will retest after a more vigorous mixing and report back with an edit if I get chocolate on the next test.

This was more gooey marshmallows than cookies or pound cake to my nose. I accidentally ordered 2 of these but I'm a-okay with that because this is in my foodie top 5. Actually, I need to do another Yuletide Post order, so maybe there will be a third bottle heading to my greedy, gluttonous little hands.

BTW, I didn't love Marshmallow Cookie Pie, sacrilege, I know, it had an off, scorched smell, but this is perfect!

  16. I love this! Frosty Red berries predominantly for me, yes, there is something slightly frosty about them minus any ozone or aquatic. The Mistletoe is a Green herbal note in support. The berries are both Red currents and cranberries, I can smell both. This smells a bit sugared as well, it's a bit sweet. I love this and think I may need a full bottle or at least more decants for the Summer. This reminds me less of Christmas than Springtime berries caught in the area late Frost.

So, I just went to pull up the recommendation thread for carnation....and there wasn't one (mods, please correct me if I am wrong and just couldn't find it!)

But this seemed a shame to me. It's one of my two favourite floral notes! I simply adore carnation.

My favourite is in Alice Milk and honey with rose, carnation and bergamot.

I also love it in Queen Alice Carnation, posies, and white amber with a hint of inky treacle, sandy cider, and wooly wine

I adore it in Frumious Bandersnatch Bandersnatch musk, redolent of spicy carnations, wild plums and chrysanthemum and will likely cry when my bottle is gone

I catch nice hints of it in Judith and Holofernes Skin musk, honey, carnation, French magnolia, patchouli, sandalwood, and immortelle.

And from BPTP, I LOVE L'essence de la Passion Red musk, carnation, myrrh, and honey.

I wanted to love Maiden but it was more tea on me than carnation white tea, carnation and Damask Rose.

I thought I loved Liebeszauber but the cubeb just took too long to settle down and let the other notes shine. Honey, rose petals, and carnations a drop of blood red clover, cubeb berries, and vanilla cream.

I want to hear everyone else's carnation favourites! :wub2:

ETA: Thanks LiberAmoris! I searched for "Carnation" never thought to try the plural! Duh!

In that case, anyone have any recent carnation faves??

Bumping the thread due to my newest obsession, carnation.

My favorite Carnation perfumes are Hod and Morocco. I have imps to try of Bathsheba and I want to track down Brisingamen. I am waiting for A Thousand Hopes and Dreams and Fears to settle. I will probably never be able to find a bottle or decant of the The Masque.

What are some other carnation perfumes to try?

Hey my fellow carnation lover! I think you'll like Brisingamen, I do. Keep meaning to get a bottle.

Hod and Alice are my faves, (Morocco is all sandalwood on me, which I love, but not a carnation scent for me).

I can't wait for my decant of A Thousand Hopes to get here! Anticipating needing a bottle.

Have you already tried Queen Alice? It's another GC carnation fave of mine.

Miss Lizzie and Cushing Manor "Atmofume" are my newest carnation loves, but they're both harder to find.

I know "soliciting" is not allowed, and this is not that, but if you wanted to try The Masque, dear Sprout, I know a certain someone who has a bottle and would gladly send you some to try. :D PM me if you want.

I think you will love A Thousand Hopes and Dreams and Joys. It is very similar to Morocco with no Sandalwood.

I have a bottle of Liebeszauber on the way. I have a very aged bottle of Queen Alice that I should retry.

I love, love, love Cushing Manor.

Miss Addie is very hard to find as is the Bandersnatch.

Brisingamen has been out of stock the last few times I was checking to add to my order.

    What about Bathsheba?

  18.

Has anyone done a side by side comparison between Skadi and In the Wild North.

In the Wild North has a sweetness, but it's not an actual berry like Skadi or Almond Blossom. It's the Lab's snow note plus spruce and pine, which is definitely lovely but not the same as Skadi. Alas.

Ah, the search continues. Maybe next year Beth will resurrect it. In the meantime, Snowflakes remains my quintessential Winter scent. I also love Talvikuu, Perchta, Ded Moroz, Dust of Snow, Snow White, Black Ice and Snowblind. Winter-Time and Nuclear Winter are nice also.

From this year's decants, I am loving Winter Landscape as my quintessential Lab Snow scent!

  20. Thanks for that list sprout! I will have to try a few of those!

I am loving A Little More Tea. Tea and cookies!

Not a tea strictly speaking (from the tea plant), but on me this year's Season of Ghosts really smells like an herbal tea blend with lemongrass, ginger, and citrus. I REALLY want to drink a hot cup of it!

Please feel free to add to my list and tweak it. I need to retry Season of Ghosts. Ginger is always a plus but lemongrass and I don't usually mix. I love real Lemon, lemon verbena, and almost all citrus though.

  21. I love the smell of BPAL Tea, and haven't done a round up of my favorites yet, so, here goes:

    GC:

White Rabbit (I love this so much I tracked down a 10 ml)

    Theodosius (Earl Grey)

    Alice

    Maiden

    Bewitched (Tea and Blackberries)

    Kumiho

Lady Una (Green Tea plus Honey!)

Desert Places (available until the Yules come down, white tea and resins)

    Full Moon

Geisha in a Green Kimono (gunpowder green)

    Mars Loucetius (Tea chypre)

    The Teapot

The Trappings of the Tea House (vanilla Tea scent of my desire)

    Venus Genetrix (jasmine tea masterpiece)

    Maiden v2

    Half-Elfv5

Tea blends that seem to be other people's favorites but I don't care for on my skin, due to problematic note inclusions:

Embalming Fluid (the chocolate made it wearable in the LE?)

    Evil

    Phantasm

    Plunder

    Rendezvous at the Bath

    Shanghai

Tea blends that I need to try:

    Bread-and-Butter-Fly

    Yurei

Omitted blends that have Tea, but it is overwhelmed by the other notes
