A King Pursued by a Unicorn

King Pursued is a soft creamy scent. there is only a hint of pine on my skin (I adore evergreen smells) and the pine fades quickly. the oak is gentle, subtle, the amber white and creamy. this reminds me of Aradia (haute macabre exclusive) but without the patchouli. very pretty. low throw and fades faster than I'd like, only because i want to huff this all day. I layered it with German Expressionist Horror and together they are high up among the best things I've ever smelled.

    Crisp, clean sheets

Flying kites reminds me of being outside on a gorgeous summer day, even suggesting clean laundry on a clothesline but without smelling (to me) soapy. All of the lab's scents with linen or cotton fabric notes that I can think of are smeared with smoke or vanilla or tattered and worn

GC recs from the past 1-2 years

The main new gc scent that I know of and love is qandisa. Musky honey saffron glamour. The dark crystal scents are great too.

    Mother Ghost

mother ghost has snuck up on me as being one of my most worn CP scents, mostly because she's so easy to wear. elegent, creamy, musky resiny vanilla. a big comforting scent that's also comfortingly weird. this is not light like the other ghostly scents in the series. this has big throw and sticks around, haunting the aura all night long. I'm a big fan of labdanum, benzoin, amber and vanilla, and they all shine here. floral notes are listed, but the rose doesn't stand out and I've assumed that the orchid flower references the vanilla orchid, upping the vanilla oomph. the ti leaf makes this feel like a distant cousin to dorian. musky vanilla tea love.

    Lady Cecily Sasquets, The Ingenue

this is absolutely one of my favorite floral-focused perfumes, from bpal and from all other brands. I love the fur musk used by the lab, and it's gorgeously present here. the lab's peony note really shines in this blend. the rose and other flowers are supporting blooms, adding complexity. (the rose is much much softer here than in the Bear prince, where it stomps out any chance of smelling the musk.) the scent dries down to an almost equal balance of feminine florals and soft musk. wearing this scent means my mood and heart are lighter and I've got a spring in my step. there's just something incredibly happy-making about this magic potion. the throw is perfect and it lasts all day (at least through a ten-hour work shift plus commute).

    Shadows and Reflections

dry, rich, deep, gritty, stunning. the musk and myrrh are the main players on me. I ADORE this scent. I've been having a love affair with dark musks and the gloom-shrouded beauty in this bottle is fantastic. sophisticated and unisex. nomnomnom

    Crimson

this scent is dark perfection! red musk can be hit or miss on my skin, but burgundy is apparently a winner, a dark swirling complicated beauty that sings out magical notes. the clove adds grit but doesn't amp or add bitterness. there's polish, smoke and spice from the other notes. this is a perfect musky red incense scent. dark, rich, dreamy. one of my favorites from this release.

    Her Strong Enchantments Failing

Leading on me is a bright fruit note that feels clean and very purple. Slightly blackberry but also very concord grape. Intertwined with said purple fruit note is something like a wine note. Not boozy, but rich and a little tangy/fermented. All this over incense smoke (more myrrh than champa on me). It's nice. When this first landed, the fruit was so bright and sweet that it felt more candy-foodie than what I generally wear, but it's settled into something darker and intriguing that makes it a keeper for me.

    Jackie

Opens with a beautiful marzipan note, smooths down into a lightly sweetened, gently [resin-]spicy patch blend. Beautiful and elegant and full of stories.
  10. annemathematics

    Denna

Green aquatic. bright and pretty and clean. the floral note is lovely. Reminds me of a bubble bath scent for young girls.
  11. annemathematics

    Kvothe

Reminds me of a young Mr Prenderghast, with the pickle-tinged musk and cigarette smoke, only add to it a mess of rich spices and a bump of something bright and bold. Sharp and masculine. Strong.

    Bast

Soft powdery musks with an edge of dry, non-foodie vanilla to them.

Forest & Woods Scents (with and without evergreens)

Black forest? Stranger in camp? https://www.etsy.com/listing/236678585/stranger-in-camp-2007-black-phoenix Dark rosaleen if you can find her. The amber in that scent is heavenly with the pine notes.

The Ghost of a Woman Confronts Her Murderer on a Stormy Night

I've had this bottle for about four days and it feels like it's still going to shift and change with time, but I'm going to share current impressions. there's something soft and bright at the outset: I'm guessing it's the asphodel because it's reminding me of the beautiful orpheus charming animals scent from the unicorns. there is some dark complexity from the musk and cypress, but these three notes all fade within the first hour of wear. when this scent dries down, it's a stunning marriage between the cedar and the softer patchouli that I smelled in wild woman with unicorns and the dream. these two really do play so wonderfully together. this is a soft, warm dry scent that I would consider unisex but on me it feels feminine but not in a classic perfume sort of way. I'm honestly not a big fan of cedar on me but this is so beautiful that I've been wearing it several days in a row now. I don't get any rage or thunder or tragedy/murder. just a beautiful soft warm patch/cedar scent. good throw and wearlength. if it stays like this as it ages, I like. if the opening notes end up lasting more and participating in a bigger manner, I also like.

    Tag-Upon-Avon

this was all CAKE CAKE CAKE on me when wet. dried down to a modest CAAAAAAAAAKE with a lil' smokey somethin' wafting gently in the background. foodier than what I wear, it was none the less fun to try.

    Motherhood

this was mostly a big blast of bright fresh pink bubble gum on me, with a little bit of extra candy smells around the edges, and traces of the faintest hint of a whisper of a dreamy memory of snake oil underneath. the lavender didn't make an impression. I'm not one who wears a lot of foodie or bubble gum perfumes, but I have tried a few other bpals with this as a note (pop! is one). this scent really felt like it made bubble gum shine as a note in as pure and bright and beautiful a manor as I ever could have imagined. true foodiephile perfumistas may beg to differ, but that's how it played to my resin-loving nose.

    Libra 2016

this is the first of the starstruck 2016s to not work on me. no matter how much i love the fruit and even the fake confectionery versions of the flavor, strawberry as a perfume oil is a fail on my skin. it starts off plasticky and dries down to a foul burnt meh in the few scents I've tried with it. alas, this includes libra. the other notes are all smothered and buried under the strawberry note. it's bizarrely and dramatically bad on me.

The Lowdown on Incense & Resin - The Best Recommendations

Ooooh so many yummy recs thankyou! Those Lupers sound stunning, will definitely keep an eye out for them (blatant newbie question... what's a DSLE Fairy? ). I love me some frankincense. Have fallen completely in love with Sonnet D'Automne recently so very eager to pick up some more when I can. Have been thinking about grabbing some All Saints from Etsy as it didn't come back this year, so great to hear a rec for that . Did grab some Dia De Los Muertos a couple months back but it was the crazy floral one (2007 I think?) so tempted to try it again if it comes back next year. Really want to try some Cathedral when it comes back in stock, hadn't thought about In Templum Dei before though so will definitely go check out reviews. Mildly obsessed with the Crimson Peak line at the mo so will have a good look at Ghosts and A Specific Abberation. Just ordered Mother Ghost with my weenies as it sounded so different to anything in my collection and Crimson is officially my favourite BPAL now Keep meaning to put an imp of Coyote in my orders and totally forgetting so thankyou for the reminder! I hadn't heard of Relics Of Herself or Ded Moroz but they sound absolutely beautiful! Just tried Elf and Paladin... yup it's awesome Had a full bottle of Paladin sitting in my cart already but will have to slip a full Elf in there too now, curses. I really like Paladin with a dash of Dorian too if you fancy an experiment. Thankyou so much for all the thoughtful recs guys. dsle is the dirty south lunacy event. there's a pinned thread for it in the top section of bpal chatter and I think there are often fb pages for the individual events (???) my dia (2015?) is indeed quite florally compared to my other bpals, and i don't normally reach for florals, but the hint of creaminess from the candy and the smokiness made it complex and comforting and intriguing to my nose. it might not be your jam! mother ghost is stunning. one of the CP scents I reach for the most. I hope you enjoy it. and yes crimson is AMAZING.

The Lowdown on Incense & Resin - The Best Recommendations

under the mosquito netting and the contrast are 2016 lupers. not the recurring LEs you asked for, but possibly still easy to find either second hand or from a DSLE fairy (they are both listed as being available still!) they are gorgeous scents if you love frankincense. other recurring scents that feel to me (and I love dark dark dark stuff, so what reads as light to me might be on the darker end for others) like light with incense are weenies All Saints (incense and pretty rose), Dia de los muertos and sonnet d'automne. cathedral and in templum dei are both light and more straight-up incense. ghosts and a specific aberration from the crimson peak line are beautiful and delicate with a suggestion of incensey resin happenings. you might stumble upon an old phoenix anniversary, relics of herself, which is very light in feel, very much a waft of incense smoke. I'd say coyote is light, but not bright (aka from lemon, if that makes sense). ded moroz was gentle amber and woods, dusted with a pretty snow note. have you tried elf with your paladin?
  20. having gone through again and read the reviews of Shadwell (really have to try this one soon!) made me think of another scent that you might enjoy: Hastur, from the good omens family of smells:Smoky-sour labdanum, black patchouli, wet tobacco, and brimstone. it's not aquatic but the "wet tobacco" made me think it'd have a similarity to shadwell, while the other notes would also make it unique in your collection. please note that wayyyyyy back when I first bought my bottle, it had almost no throw and barely any scent. I stuck it in my sales box, where it sat for about a year before I took it out and sniffed it again to discover that not only did it have a scent, but it was compelling and beautiful and weird. this one benefits from aging!
  21. never smelled shadwell (but now I want to!) but here are my favorite weirdly comforting bpals mr prenderghast!! : Sweet cigar smoke, brown wool, Old Furry Touk accord, and a little bit of coffee. very much like huffing a character. like cuddling this character. bub!: A dog’s bright, beaming memories of playing in the sun, rolling in the grass, and begging for table scraps. light and bright and soft and gentle. very pretty! ghost dog perfume also great for halloween! trevor bruttenholm: A classic men's cologne mixed with the scent of old, yellowed books, a splash of bay rum, and summoning incense. very beautiful with the incense, also comforting enterprise of the night: Inspired by the opening pages of Circle of Blood. The scent of vice and darkness: flashing neon, oil-tinged petrichor, fading perfume, smeared lipstick, and the faintest touch of gunpowder residue. channel snow: Television static made manifest, with a glimpse of perversions hidden beneath: benzoin, black pepper, white sandalwood, olibanum, ambergris accord, galbanum, and O3. not super comforting, but both are very evocative and perfectly summon up their themes. the other extreme, being comforting but not as evocative as mr P up above is, is IAN, from the olla line also the edge of doom: The night flight from Tangier: drops of spilled blood color the antiseptic, bland, plastic paleness of the fuselage, with violet leaf for longing, rosemary for reminiscences, and black opoponax for apprehension. evocative, but maybe not super comforthing. never tried mr bobo, but it sounds like he might belong in this thread. my final suggestion, maybe not weird enough but beautiful, is the marquis de carabas: A splash of bay rum, leather, dusty black wool, massoia bark, and opium residue.

    Lilith's Hair Gloss

this is so beautiful! yes, close to TKO with the lavender and the vanilla. but yet also its own thing, entirely different in feel. soft lavender, sweetened with vanilla, warmed by musk. [not sure that my nose knows what hops in perfume smells like; I'm not getting anything that reminds me of what I've used when brewing beer]. this is soft, gentle and light. the throw and wearlength are perfect for a child's hg: gently present and reassuringly detectable, light enough for any occasion...work, school outings, etc...and there's a big dose of love in this too. thank you for sharing this, puddin!

    The Silence of the Woods

in the bottle and wet, this is all about that thar DURT. big strong slushy DIRT. then there's a trace of foresty smells and something aquatic-but-not-soapy. the second thing could indeed be a nice splash of wine for the burgundy. then, POOF the berries appear! very nice and reminding me of the fantastic belladonna berries in Beautiful Death. the drydown is a lovely mix of the berries, wine, soil and forest air. it doesn't scratch the itch for a heavily-foresty scent (those notes are very much in the background) but it is a lovely and nuanced scent that I am happy to reach for a lot. it reminds me of a scent translation of the most beautiful gothy dark blood red silky-velvety fabric. dark, rich, every so slightly brooding, but beautiful and suggesting of a rich history. if the kids from crimson peak went camping...that kind of glam.

    Oakmoss

lucille's room is so brilliant! lilac and oakmoss: who knew how good that could be [beth, apparently...] I second the cry for oakmoss SN to return. if not with the new SNs, then maybe there are old bottles that can go up on the lab's etsy page. going to add a few favorite scents with oakmoss from the past few years: Chionophobia Fear of Snow A suffocating, oppressive white shroud: a fragrance heavy with ice, strangled by damp oakmoss, artemisia, and muguet. Dark Rosaleen: Impassioned patriotism cloaked in the guise of a love song: golden frankincense gilding pine pitch, sun-touched amber, and oakmoss resinoid. Lacus Mortis The Lake of Death: narcotic indole, pale asphodel, and bone-white sandalwood plunged into in an impenetrable sea of black patchouli, labdanum, castoreum accord, and oakmoss. Lily, The Prostitute Heady blossoms of jasmine, white gardenia, and magnolia sharpened by neroli, given a voluptuous depth by red patchouli, oakmoss, and cedar. Moons of Jupiter: Metis Clary sage, oakmoss, white pine, and terebinth. Mount Fuji Reflected in Lake Misaica An oakmoss chypre with black cypress, wild mint, labdanum, pine needles, white sandalwood, and white cedar. Palus Putridinis The Marsh of Corruption: murky patchouli and dank oakmoss drowning in a mire of leathery bourbon vanilla, bitter clove, bog cypress, cumin, and vetiver. Visions of Autumn VI Oakmoss, lavender absolute, petitgrain, rockrose, white patchouli, and sage.

    Reapers Gonna Reap

musky! vanilla! sandalwood! Just like it says. The meat bones are indeed pretty and they smell very clean, if that makes sense. (by clean, I mean smoooooooooth as all getout. uh, not soapy! not even in the same county as soapy. clean bones have nothing to do with soap. clean bones aren't gorey or crusted with dried sinew. they are smooth and polished by being handled by a little mystic as she throws them to communicate with other realms and higher powers) not foodie but may still appeal to folks who like those scents. Mellow and understated but entirely perfect. It's the perfect black dress meets best-ever-jeans in perfume form. elegant but effortless. good for every situation and easy to wear. this works wonderfully on my chemistry. I love this. thanks, beth and lilith!
