    Lilith

ladylatemar gifted me with this imp! i've been eyeing you, lilith. in the vial, it isn't quite what i expected. i get sharp, sweet wine and.. egg nog? where is that creamy egg nog scent coming from? my sniffer is off. on my skin, it retains that sharp sweetness that the wine gives, and it reminds me a bit of tum from the stations of the sun set. the lovely red wine is tempered by a sexy powdery smell, which is what black musk and myrrh always do on my skin. i love this so much. i don't know if it's bottle material like i was hoping, but i'm definitely going to give it a few more tries. the jury is still out.

    Wolfsbane

so green and herbal. i hate that! on my skin, it actually turns a little bit floral. it's sharpness reminds me a bit of the now discontinued cancer. yeaaah, this smells like a floral.

    Tombstone

i can't really say anything that hasn't been said. this is musty and sweet. it's exactly how i envisioned it to smell, and i LOVE it. lovelovelovelove. my boyfriend is going to smell so good.

Allergy Questions, Allergies and other reactions to oils

wow. i'm still wondering what's in that. i'm familiar with all of the notes listed and none of them usually give me a reaction, but i'll reiterate what happens to my skin when i put it on: the area gets warm and a bit tingly, it feels like my skin is sort'f.. crawling? it doesn't turn noticably red and i don't get any welts, but it's very odd. and i love it. -purr-

    The Fool

like everyone else, all i can detect is mint and something sweet. unfortunately, i'm not down with smelling like mint, so this is off to a new home who will hopefully appreciate the fool.

    Zombi

i could've sworn i reviewed this. friendthegirl sent this to me as well as burial, and i'm so glad i got to try the two. in the bottle there's a very faint herbal smell that i've never been particularly fond of, but i desperately wanted to wear this for halloween. the longer it was on my skin, the more reminiscent it became of old graveyards. i'm not sure if this is a case of me being easily persuaded by the description and intent of this or if it's a case of beth being a fucking genius. more than likely, it's both. the gritty herbal smell i'm getting from this starts to hurt my stomach after a while, but i braved it and wore it on halloween anyway. layering it with burial gives it a lot of oomph. as far as my stomach hurting goes, the same thing happened with nosferatu, which had a similar smell, so i'm wondering what the similar notes are. i think i may e-mail/PM beth about it.

    Rage

i was so hoping this would be a lovely, dark floral, but once i read the reviews i knew not to get my hopes up. the name rage is very deceptive; this was light, floral, and very girly on me. i suppose i was fairly neutral to the way it smelled; i don't like florals, but i love dragon's blood, and they cancelled one another out. i love you dragon's blood, i just wish there were more instances where you worked well on my skin. combined with the wrong ingredients (florals, namely), dragon's blood turns to air freshener on me, and this was no exception. ah well.

Why do scents turn to baby powder on me?!

along with everyone else's information about skin chemistry and hormones, your diet is also a big variable that can completely change the way certain things smell. i've tried enough of beth's oils to know which notes do and do not work with my chemistry, and i primarily stick to trying the ones that i know WILL work; however, don't rule out trying things, regardless of whether or not it may go bad on you. for example, by my second order rolled around, i had completely sworn off rose blends. i thought they were old ladyish, and i had a similar problem with them being amplified on my skin. a couple of weeks ago, due to a certain recommendations thread , i realized that i COULD wear it, it was just the other notes that got in the way. i wouldn't be swapping your scents away just yet if you're interested in doing that. i regret swapping away a lot of imps and bottles from my first couple of orders because i realize my nose wasn't really "trained" enough to be able to appreciate the beauty of beth's oils.

Recs for those who can't do sweet perfumes?

bordello is berry/fruity, but it isn't necessarily sweet. it's more creamy than anything. i'm not sure about the notes in medea, but it smelled like very spicy fruit on my skin.
  10. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH. i was wondering where that post went to! i meant to post it in the gingerbread cookie thread where someone posted a link to "make" gingerbread cookies online. i guess i put it in the wrong thread. HAHAHAHA. i'll try not to be off topic again. i think yerevan and king of spades are very similar, in that over-ripe fruit kind of smell, and that they're both very light. king of spades has the coconut smell, though.

    Empyreal Mist

empyreal mist is gooooorgeous. i really didn't expect to like it so much. i'm wishing i knew the notes that are in it, because it smells so familiar. smelling this makes me feel almost nostalgic, and it makes me longlonglong for those days in summer where the dark grey skies bring out the greenness of the grass and trees, and i would walk outside every morning to hazy mist floating along the street.

    Delirium

wait, is this is the same delirium i tried months ago and didn't like at all? how can that be? i just sniffed the imp and dabbed a wee bit on my skin, and i don't remember it ever smelling this good. this is SO perfect for spring. fruity, light, and bouncy. this smells so innocent to me. it reminds me of a child in a sun dress and a big, goofy hat in the middle of a park, swinging on the swing set with her mom. daww.. i'm sending this to darklorelei, though, just because i think she's wanted to try it for a while now. ta-ta, delirium. i'm sorry we never got along until now.

    Dragon's Heart

the color of this oil is breathtakingly lovely. it's much darker than the other dragon's blood blends i've tried, and i dig it. ;D when it comes to the smell, though, i find it a bit lacking. dragon's blood is always amplified to my nose, and it seems to really cancel out the other notes in a blend unless they're strong. this does smell darker and woodier than dragon's milk or straight dragon's blood, so who knows? on my skin, the dragon's blood remains the most apparent to my nose, as i expected it would. it smells almost the same as it does in the vial, but it deepens a bit, which is a shame because i love all of the other notes except for the fig. dragon's heart is VERY, VERY red and lovely. the woody/fruity smell is subtle in comparison to the dragon's blood, but the notes don't fail to invoke images of a bright red sun setting over a dense autumnal forest.

    Scherezade

i got this in a swap a looong time ago, and wasn't particularly fond of it, so i swapped it away. the lab always knows best, however, and sent it to me as a freebie. i was pretty excited to try it again. spicy, sensual musk is what i get from this out of the bottle. mmm, sexy. oh, how positively wonderful.. i just sniffed it again and can't really smell it at all. i guess she doesn't want me to review her. off of my skin right now, it just smells spicy, but that's because my nose has decided to stop working. i may come back and edit this when my nose is capable of smelling things again. i've got a 5mL of this on the way from quinkel, and i'm SO happy. this is one i really love to slather.

    Hunter Moon 2004

i was super excited to try this, because wine components looooove my skin. in the bottle, it smells like another oil i can't think of right now. sharp, pungent dead leaves. i put it on my skin and that's about all i can smell. i don't get the wine, i just get very, very, very dead leaves. i traded samhain for queen of spades, then traded qos for this. i really should've just stuck with samhain. PS. i smell like i got jumped by the holiday section at michael's craft store.

Why do scents turn to baby powder on me?!

snake oil turned straight to babypowder on me. amber, myrrh, and ylang ylang are most often the culprits, as are sandalwood and clove if i'm not lucky.

    Black Pearl

the lab. i love them. freebie. pearl, black. brain overload. this is the tropical scent i've been SEARCHING for. initially, i couldn't really decide if i liked the way it smelled in the vial. now, i want to drink the vial. i smell hazelnut, coconut, and something luxurious and creamy behind them. i can almost smell bananas, but i think that may be my untrained nose sniffing out the iris, or my brain superimposing tropical fruit into the image this oil invokes. i'm so glad i took the plunge and ordered a 5mL of this unsniffed. this is the scent of a gorgeous view of palm trees, the ocean, and the large moon through glass panel windows in a top-dollar hotel. this is the scent of lazily strolling on the beach at night, pina colada in hand, and feeling the sand between your toes. so unbelievably gorgeous. this is sexy without being incensey or dark. edited for stupid typos. black pearl makes me goofy.

    #20 Love Oil

i'm not getting rose from this at all. it isn't necessarily spicy, either, but i can see why people would think so. it is extremely clean-smelling, very herbaceous, which seems true of all of the voodoo blends i've tried. at first i thought it smelled horrible, but i suppose it's rather grown on me. i don't think i would ever wear it. off to swap.

    Anne Bonny

i'm not at all influenced by the description when i smell this, so it doesn't quite invoke images of pirate ships, the sea, or a brutal woman in pirate attire. rather, this smells like a sweeter version of cathedral. this is cathedral's little sister; he's the studious, pious one of the family, quite reflective, and anne bonny plays dress up and throws little boys into the mud during recess.

    Libertine

this is uber-soft on me, very unoffensive. for some reason, i actually like it. it must be the sandalwood and musk that makes me really dig it, because i don't like violet or rose. this is becoming very sweet, and i'm so glad i gave it a chance before i swapped it away. the violets, which don't scream out at me like they usually do, are adding a soft, sweet "purple" to the blend. wow, libertine DEFINITELY surprised me! i'll try to keep this one around.

    Iago

god, i can't believe i like this! it has evil components that generally don't work for me, but i love the way it smells. black musk? horrid. leather? heinous. vetiver? eh, i don't care for it. but this blend? oh god! GOD. this is what i expected de sade to be. this is the ultimate comfort scent to me, i put it on when i'm sad. i want to smell this on my boy.

    Penthus

i was scared by this in the bottle, but it's much lighter on my skin. there isn't much i can say that hasn't already been said, but i felt bad because it doesn't have very many reviews. it immediately dries down to a rosey scent. it's extremely melancholy, and if it were to have a color, it would be muted blue with swirls of grey and white. this is somehow very evocative of water although it only contains salty notes. kind of makes me want to go swimming, actually..

    Yerevan

oh, delicious fruity hell in a bottle, how i love thee. this has been on my wishlist since it came out, and i LOVE it. absolutely lovelovelovelove it. it was a freebie in my last order, and i'm totally dumbfounded. i'm honestly horrible at picking out various notes in this, but it's just a wonderful blend of fruity goodness. like SV said, the fruit smells almost as though it's too ripe. this is fae, but 20x better. sometimes it smells a bit artificial, but i've realized that a lot of the fruit scents do that every once in a while. i don't know if i'll ever buy this again, but i certainly love it.

    Blood

what surprised me about blood is that i can't smell the dragon's blood unless i sniff really hard, which is a first with the dragon's blood blends! in the vial: cherry and, hm, what's that smell? it seems really familar. what's th-- EGG NOG? WHAT THE FUCK? mk. let's put this up and try again later. on my second endeavor with blood, i get cherry and spicy cloves, which is a very lovely combination. as it dries, it begins to get powdery, which i'll assume is the myrrh. it never fails to do that, really. this is very sexy. it isn't evocative of blood, and that's a GOOD thing in my book.
