  1. A touch harsh when wet, but definitely light parchment. Fades nicely down to faint incense over paper and musk. Definitely exactly what the description says. I don't have the urge to slather, but this one is a subtle scent. It never slaps me in the face, but it persists quietly. I could still detect it on my wrists twelve hours after application.

  2. Dark, soft, rich, deep, a little sweet-spicy, thick like a velvet throw under your hand. Dark brown velvet, almost black. Of the earth without being a dirt scent, chthonic in the mythic sense.

Definitely reminds me of Schwarzer Mond, which is another all-time favorite. I am so happy I ordered two bottles. I will use them.

  3. Not sweet; amber + warm spice. It reminds me a bit of the Lion in his golden warmth, though this isn't milky in any way. There's an herbal undertone, of crushed dried leaves. Warm and soft and dry. Grounded.

    I'd also call it gender-neutral.

  4. This one is the first of the Snake Pit scents not to work on me. Or agree with my nose.

My reaction to the scent in the bottle was "cough syrup". As it dries, it eases down into more of a floral scent, but alas, one that makes me want to sneeze. I think that's the gardenia. And the apple is not blending well for me: it feels all unsettled and astringent.

I love apple scents enough to hang onto this a bit and try it again.

  5. I like this, but I'm having a hard time articulating why. Green, it's definitely green. I recognize the olive leaf from Lycaon and other blends I've liked recently. I don't get aquatic from this, but I think I do sense that whiff of salt other reviewers have mentioned.

Green, mossy, and soft, with the snake oil sugared oils far below.

  6. Woody, sweet, green, and grassy, all with the spice of Snake Oil lurking below. The musk softens the spiky bamboo as it dries, and it becomes more musky and less grassy. It doesn't have a wham! in yo face! effect. It just softly insinuates itself around me. Love.

  7. I wasn't sure I was going to like a chocolate/cocoa scent. I'm not entirely into the foody thing. Boomslang converted me.

Milky chocolate over a warm spicy base. Maybe a glass of chocolate chai? Dusty dusky chocolate. Not too sweet, more rich & warm. Guh!

My skin ate this up, so I have to slather it.

  8. Cake. Almond cake. Spicy almond cake. Not too sweet, not the kind with gloppy icing. Or maybe a drink with orange and amaretto.

It fades down a bit to a more recognizable Snake Oil after the first burst of almond, but it's remaining cake-y on my wrists. Definitely a scent for the foody scent fans. I'm not normally foody, but man, I'll make an exception here. Cake!

  9. Dark, mysterious, dry. Incense-y, definitely, with the spice far underneath. The orris pops to the foreground.

Aged-blackened benches, bound with dark metal, creaking as you sit. The vaulted ceiling arches up into darkness over your head. Men in robes file past, utterly silent.

  10. Warm and spicy vanilla, smooth, with dusty leather and the sage lending it a bit of interest on top. Mellow and laid back: this cowboy is dozing in the sun. My husband will be smelling like this until further notice. I think I'm going to have to get a second bottle so I can make him a dry oil spray.

This was the first of the Snake Pit blends I tried, and I went nuts over it.

  11. This is another scent that evokes vivid imagery for me. A big wolfy, Spitzy dog, come to meet you from his run in the forest. Night, wintertime. His coat is covered with snow and pine needles. Cold tree-scent. Refreshing. Could be worn by a man as easily as a woman; I'll have to get my husband to stop putting on the Dee long enough to try this.

  12. Mmmmmm. This is wonderful. Do I like it better than Schwarzer Mond? I'm not sure. I need to compare them more directly. They are similar to each other, with that slightly sweet incense-y thing, all dark and mysterious and soft. This is a little sharper, maybe, and less resinous overall. An instant favorite, that's for sure.

  13. I'm pretty new, so I don't have the same broad exposure to BPAL that y'all have, but this is what my "cover the range" list of 12 would look like:

Snake Oil - the signature scent

    O - another very BPAL-ish experience

Dragon's Milk - non-foody sweet vanilla; everyone I've given this to has liked it

    Aglaea - happiness distilled

Shango - the bottle should come with a paper umbrella

Blood Rose - rose & wine, complex & sophisticated

The Lion - warm spiced amber, or a glass of hot chai with milk

Miskatonic University - foody and Lovecrafty at once

Embalming Fluid - the opposite of warm

Severin - tea and leather, two important BPAL notes

Samhain - the essence of fall; an example of evoking place & time

Schwarzer Mond - my god, resinous, sweet, soft, dark, and mysterious

Or maybe swap out the LE Mond for Titus Andronicus, to keep the list in the GC or at least still available. Or swap Dorian in for Severin. Or Two, Five, & Seven in for Blood Rose. Or Alice in for The Lion, to get another floral in. Eep. These lists are hard.

  14. All wood here, no resin that my untrained nose can detect. Dry woods, very like Dragon's Bone as another reviewer said, only minus the rounded fruitiness of the dragon's blood. There's cedar in this as well (at least I think that's what's making me sneeze a bit). Desolation, dust, dry abandonment.

A scent I will use to get myself into a particular headspace for writing, I think.

  15. Interesting. Pleasant. A rich, thick rose scent, with a lot going on underneath: wine and blood. Feminine in an older, self-assured way. I feel like I should be wearing silk when I put this on, in dark jewel tones. Certainly not jeans and a t-shirt. Like it fine, but it doesn't match my self-image, so skipping for now. I'll keep the imp in case I ever need to get dressed up.

  16. Has anybody uploaded a pic of the Dragon labels yet? I got a 5mL of Tanin'iver today, and it's got a very nifty label. Presumably Ladon does as well...I'm not at all sure about the Dragon's ___ scents though.

The bottle of Dragon's Milk I just got has a nifty new label on it. As does Death Cap. I'll see if I can dig up my digital camera.

  17. My first Lunacy scent! Wet, I can detect the bay rum, which makes it feel a bit masculine. Resinous. Sweet. Soft. Dark and mysterious. Like velvet. Actually, like heavy curtains hung in the doorway to a back room in a curiosity shop; beyond it is a room full of wooden boxes and trunks, with little space with a desk. The curtains dampen the sound of the floorboards creaking under your feet.

Wonderful; I keep sniffing my wrists. I wish I'd bought more than one bottle!

  18. Ferocious? Don't think so. But warm and golden and spicy, definitely. Cinnamon in this, and maybe something like clove. It reminds me of a glass of hot sweet chai. This would be great on a rainy day, or to sleep in on a cold night.

Bought a bottle just on the description, and very glad I took the flyer.

  19. So cheerful and bright and fruity when wet. Settles down quietly to cheerful but smooth amber. Happy golden sunshine. I probably never would have tried this on my own-- too scared off by the peach & myrtle. I am very pleased I got the frimp, though, cause I love it and bought a bottle. I put it on to feel happy.

  20. Mushrooms, dried in the baggie. Warm, crumbly, faintly sweet, a distant sense of almond and cherry and baking, and yet it's not a food scent. Sometimes I get sun-warmed earth, sometimes delicious exotic mushrooms at the local gourmet produce mart, sometimes baking. Completely fascinating scent.

Makes me feel good to wear it, all warm and secure. I bought a bottle.

  21. I wore Anne Bonny for International Talk Like a Pirate day on Sept 19. A perfect scent for the day, of course!

A lighter patchouli, not the dirty deep earthy kinds, with resin. And it's salty. I don't know that I get ship or sea. Maybe more sea air? Spray-soaked ropes?
