    Val Sans Retour

In the imp: Citrus. I'm not getting lemon- maybe more like orange. There's a note behind it that I can't quite make out. On me: More of the same. Now I'm fairly certain it's orange. Whatever the other note was disappeared completely. It smells like a lot like the orange oil my girlfriend in high school wore. It's nice, simple, and light. It's a very summery scent. I like it, but I tend to wear more complex scents.

    Juju

This is definitely a voodoo blend! It's smells deep and herbal, with maybe a touch of something floral. And maybe some sort of wood? It seems to change everytime I sniff it. It smells like a voodoo shop more than a perfume.

    Carnivàle

In the imp: Very sweet and fruity. It smells like berries and lollipops. On me: Why, oh why, must my skin amp carnation then make it smell like something rotten? It smells like carnation gone bad, with some nice berries underneath.

    Silentium Amoris

Rose normally doesn't work on me, but Silentium Amoris was nice. It didn't turn perfumey or soapy at all. It smelled a lot like a rose tea.

    Delirium

In the imp: Lemon- which always reminds me of cleaning supplies. On me: Very perfumey (it's that dang rose) with a hint of cleaning supplies. Like your grandmother after she's been scrubbing the floor. Dry: Generic perfume scent. Rose always does this to me...

    Cathode

In the imp: Mint, with a bit of moss. Wet: This smells almost acidic. I keep expecting it to burn my skin, and I'm resisting the urge to wash it off. Dry: Not quite so acidic, but still very tangy, and way too minty for my tastes.

    Ouija

Wet- This is a nice soft floral with a bit of wood beneath it. It smells like what I imagine a Victorian parlor smelled like. It's very light, and I had to slather it on to smell it at all. Dry- Rose-scented soap. Now instead of a Victorian parlor, it smells like a Victorian themed bathroom in a model home. And it fades in only a few minutes.

    Absinthe

This is spot on what Absinthe smells like- lemon and licorice. It stays pretty true on my skin, and has a decent throw. Now the real question is whether I want to walk around smelling like Absinthe.

    Dee

This was the exchange between my fiance and I the first time I tried Dee: *sniffs wrist* "I like this. I bet this is what Giles smells like." *sniff sniff* "I smell like a library." *sniffs some more* "This is so hot!" At about that point, my boyfriend just about fell out of his chair laughing. Now he keeps winking and offering to take me to the library... I've been searching for a scent that makes me feel sexy. Who would have guessed that it'd be Old British Man? This is on my short list of bottles I need. I can only pick out a few notes- the leather and something that smells kind of lemony. It's soft, subtle, and very sexy in an old British man sort of way.

    Snake Charmer

In the bottle: Warm and spicy. Kind of like a less in-your-face Baghdad. On me: This was utterly delightful for the first thirty seconds. Then the coconut made an appearance. I'm not a big fan of coconut, but this isn't terrible. At least I can still smell the amber and spices. Then the vanilla beat all the warm, spicy notes into submission. My skin amps vanilla like nobody's business, and this scent is no exception. 5 minutes later, all that's left is the weird vanilla note that lingers for hours and won't wash off.

    The Premature Burial

In the imp: It smells like wet dirt. Which, I suppose, isn't a bad thing. On me, wet: Musty attic. Kind of dusty, with a bit of old wood. I really like it at this stage. On me, dry: The wet dirt is back. It's not bad, but not me. If it could just stay at the musty attic stage...

    Hexennacht (2005, 2016, 2019)

This smelled almost exactly the same in the imp and on my skin. It smells a bit forest and a little sweet. It really reminds me of Christmas for some reason! Maybe it's the fir- I'm not sure. The smoke comes out a bit as it dries, and this scent lingers on my wrist for quite a while. It's definitely not something I'd wear, but I might save it till winter and put it in my burner.

    Miskatonic University

In the imp: Coffee, and not much else. I was hoping for the "dusty tome" note to be more prominent- I can't smell it at all. On me: Burnt coffee- This smells like walking into a room where somebody forgot and left the coffee machine on over night. After an hour- The burnt smell gets more prominent as it dries. Maybe it's the dusty tome going weird on my skin. It smells like seriously burnt coffee.

    pineapple?

I did a search, and the only thing that came up was Mi-go Brain Canister, which was a LE. A lot of people get pineapple from Baba Yaga, which is an unreleased blend. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful- there don't seem to be catalog scents with pineapple. At least not that I can find.

    Baba Yaga

Edited May 2010 - I've run across two distinctly different versions of the unreleased Baba Yaga. Since it wasn't just one or two off imps- a lot of this scent passed through my hands- I'm reviewing both. And the released version as well. Combo review! Unreleased Baba Yaga #1 Imp: The top note is something fruity- maybe pineapple or some sort of citrus. In the imp, the fruit note is really strong. There is something floral or possibly a bit herbal underneath it and a light of musk. Wet: It smells delicious on my skin- thought not at all what I imagine Baba Yaga would smell like. Fruity, with just a touch of flowers and herbs and a musk base. I think there's jasmine in this, which I normally hate, but it's so well blended that the jasmine is playing nice. Dry: A complex honeyed fruit musk. It is gorgeous! Definitely in my top three favorites. It has some real staying power too, which is rare on me. Most scents only last a hour or two on me, but I can put this on when I go to work in the morning and still smell it a bit when I get home at night. I've managed to amass a number of imps of this version, but no bottles. Unreleased Baba Yaga #2 Bottle: Generic perfumey floral with a touch of fruity musk. This was so disappointing! Every time I find a bottle of this, I cross my fingers for pineapple, and I get floral. I think the fruit note might still be pineapple, or possibly pear, but it's overpowered so much by the floral note that I can't tell. Wet: Still an unremarkable floral with a bit of musk. It's sweeter than it was in the bottle, so there might be a touch of fruit in there. I think there's carnation here among the flowers. Dry: A sweet, slightly musky floral. This is actually kind of nice, but I'm not a floral kind of girl. General Catalog Baba Yaga Imp: Lots of herbs! And some light flowers. I tested this side by side with the (very aged) Unreleased Baba Yaga #2, and I think the floral notes are the same. Wet: Soft herbs and light wood. It's nice, but really faint. Dry: Super faint! This faded into nothing almost immediately. Unfortunately, it seems like the released version of Baba Yaga is my least favorite of the bunch! It's such a shame, because she's one of my favorite mythological figures.

    Bastet

I don't think I can say anything that hasn't already been said. This scent is sexy and luxurious. The almond comes out pretty strong on my skin, but I can't pick out any other notes. It all blends together and smells lovely.

    Dracul

In the imp: Musk and mint. This smells masculine to me. On my skin: I nearly made my boyfriend fall out of his chair by sniffing my wrist and exclaiming "I smell like a Super 8!" (Which is a fairly cheap chain of hotels, for those of you not in North America.) It smells like lingering cigarette smoke with a little bit of musk and mint. An hour later: I still smell like a hotel room. This is definitely not something I'd wear. A few hours after that: It's still there. If nothing else, it sticks around a long time. It smells great on my boyfriend though. The clove and orange that never had a chance on me come out very nicely on him. He smells a bit like a goth club, but in the good, sexy way.

    Lightning

In the vial, this smells exactly like a storm- wet and sharp and a bit tangy. It's fantastic in my oil burner- it makes my entire living room smell like a spring storm. Unfortunately it gets weird and powdery on my skin. I might buy a 5ml to use in my burner though.

    Snake Oil

This just smells like vanilla on me. It's sweet, kind of candy-like, and not at all sexy. I wore it for an entire evening to see if it would turn into something sexy, but I just smelled like I bathed in vanilla extract. I'll let this sit for a few months and come back to it. Hopefully it will age into something I like.

    Spellbound

In the Imp - A warm rose and amber blend. Rose tends to take over on my skin, but I'm hoping the amber will smooth it out a bit. Wet - OMGRose! I had to resist the urge to wash it off. Dry - Still mostly rose. I can pick out the amber a bit. I can smell the musk a bit too, but it's gotten powdery. This scent does not like my skin chemistry.

    Nefertiti

In the imp - Lots of iris and sandalwood. I can pick out the myrrh, too, and some other floral note. Wet - Mostly iris. Which isn't bad. but I miss the sandalwood. Dry - The iris fades a bit, and it's back to an iris/sandalwood mix. The other scents come out a bit in the background, but the iris and sandalwood dominate it. A bit later - The iris has faded, and now it's mostly sandalwood. I like it at this stage, but not as much as other sandalwood scents.

    Vixen

I got this as a frimp from the lab. I generally don't like patchouli, but I decided to try it anyway since I like orange a lot. In the imp it smelled nice enough, but the orange started to fade as soon as I put it on. After a couple minutes, it was just patchouli.

    Queen of Sheba

To my nose, Queen of Sheba smells like almond extract with some sort of spice in the background. I can't pick out what that spice is- the almond overpowers it too much. My boyfriend and I both recoiled from sniffing the imp, and I couldn't even bear to put it on. I was hoping for something softer- more like spicy marzipan.

    Sacred Whore of Babylon

This is spicy and exotic. I smell cinnamon and maybe some sort of floral. It's very womanly. I like it a lot, but my boyfriend says it smells like his mother, so into the swap pile it goes...

    Czernobog

I bought this for my boyfriend. I love the Slavic gods, so I had high hopes for it. This is masculine and musky. It's very heavy and sexy. I can't identify the individual notes, but they work very well together. Overall I like it, but not enough to buy a bottle.
