    The Obsidian Widow

This intrigued me for the pinot noir, since it's not used often, but has 2 death notes and one iffy note, specifically rose, jasmine and sandalwood, respectively... In the imp...Woo...floral. On wet...Rose rose rose ROSE ROSE ROSE ROSE On dry...ROSE ROSE ROSE ROSE myrrh, jasmine ROSE ROSE ROSE Yup, not for me, probably amazing for someone who likes florals, because it is a nice rose, but...ROSE ROSE.

    Batty

O.M.G. This is just amazing in the bottle, on wet and on dry! In the bottle it is a wonderful chocolate a la many of the 13's nice, dark, and sweet at the same time. On wet the chocolate warms and the tonka makes itself known, in a wonderful subtle note. The oleander and oudh mix together well, canceling out any worrisome floral notes. Dry this really shines. I have no idea what bat musk smells like but if this is it I need to find some little sky rats and rub them all over my body. The musk mixes with the chocolate and imparts an amazing, sexy note to this already awesome mix. The cassia becomes noticeable at this stage, but it is perfect, not like, OMG HAI CINNAMON, but just a warming note, lifting the tonka, chocolate and musk off the skin. It is bloody brilliant and I am SO HAPPY I have a bottle now (Thanks Agameofthree). Don't forget, this one needs to be rolled in the hands before it is applied, the chocolate sinks to the bottom. I forgot the first time I put it on and it was still amazing, but after I rolled it (it's fun to see all the chocolate bits in suspension) it was that much better. Easily one of my top 5 scents. Easily.

    What scents are masculine? Gender-neutral?

Ooh, Z, great rec on Old Demons, can't believe I forgot that one, It's amazing as well, definitely nicely masculine, spicy and sexy.

    What scents are masculine? Gender-neutral?

Crowley, its complex but has a nice masculine vibe, as does Famine. Greed is super masculine, imo, very woodsy and deep. I think Whitechapel is also a nice clean masculine scent. Those would be my, off the top of my head, thoughts.

Halp! Recommendations for an absolute Newbie

Eat Me is bloody sublime. The vanilla cake combined with the incredibly bright, juciy currant is just beyond words. It is one of my most favorite blends. If you decide to order from the lab it is also available as an imp, so you could test it! Red Queen is also quite good, not as knock your socks off as Eat Me, but super nice! And Hollywood Babylon is a wonderful, incensey tart cherry. I was actually wearing it this morning! It's quite complex really and I adore it (more than Red Queen, tbh). The nice thing is that all of those are available as imps, so you could test them without breaking the bank!

    Thanatopsis

A meditation upon death. Inspired by William Cullen Bryant’s poem. A deep, solemn earthen scent containing pine, juniper and musk. Smelling it blind, in the imp, I at first have no clue what notes are here, but I'm very intrigued. After a bit of rumination there is a definite menthol-ish note...maybe eucalyptus or piney. It's nice. On wet...hmm...it smells a little like Vicks Vaporub...which actually has great associations for me. Don't ask. A defined, almost sweet sap note becomes apparent under the high eucalyptus scent. On dry...the Vicks scent falls away, and with it the very sharp quality of this blend. In its place the sweet green, pine sap comes to the forefront with a lovely, light musk mingling like a well loved friend at a party. This brings the blend to a whole different level. Overall I like every single stage of this blend, totally a keeper.

    Aelopile

In the imp...a huge burst of citrus, which after further sniffing reveals a warm wooden base with a touch of bitterness. On wet...the cedar blooms as the oil is spread, with a melange of citrus providing the top notes. There is a slightly resinous quality behind the wood and citrus, bitter, almost myrrh like. On dry...the citrus really dominates this blend. The cedar is still there, but whispering sweet nothings behind the sharp citrus. The slight bitter resin provides a dark backing to the whole. It does temper some of the serious citrus that is center stage. I also learned something testing thus one. Did you guys know that oud is also called agar wood and is created when a certain species of tree is infected by a virus? The virus spreads to the heart wood of the tree and as the tree combats it it creates the aromatic compounds that make up the resin used in performer! It explains the slightly incense resin, myrrh-ish thing I noted. All in all...pretty brash citrus. Some throw, decent sticking power. Just maybe a little one note for me. It's nice, but I'm trying to be brutal in culling my imps so most likely a swapper. ETA: oh, its got amber, normally that's a death note for me...but here I'm not getting very much of it. Also, the cedar becomes more apparent after some time, but...still a swapper.

    The Sea Foams Milk

In the imp...interestingly enough, not a ton of smell. Maybe a slight, sharp, tang with a barely there saltiness. On wet...the labs aquatic note becomes strongly apparent. It is reminiscent of a slightly (very slightly) citron mixed with sea spray. On dry...as it warms a creaminess emerges, sweet and tempering to the high aquatic sea note. The salt weaves in among the creamy aquatic notes and gives them some grounding. It has a touch of a cologne vibe which I quite enjoy, and I think that's fairly standard for the labs aquatic tones. Decent throw when dry. All in all I like it very much, it is perfectly balanced and I will surely use up the imp!

    Robin Goodfellow

Dark musk, moss-covered wood, ragwort, heather, and sage. Love this, no surprise. In the imp sage is prevalent, along with a soft green moss note, complete with the old wood that the moss is growing on. On wet...the dark musk blooms, with something that is almost floral. Something with high, sweet tones. The moss and wood provide strong base notes for the higher tones. Dry...here this really shines. Supple leatherand warm wood waft through a simply amazing musk note. It's not an animalistic musk, more skin musk. The wood is a nice, dry wood, not mouldering. The moss smells fresh, not dank as it can at times. The whole combines to evoke a rugged huntsman, trekking through a verdant forest, with a warm breeze wafting through wild flowers some yards away. That being said, I think this is very much a unisex scent thanks to the strong interplay of the high and base notes. This one is really quite amazing. ETA: after several hours the high notes in this die down significantly leaving the wonderful dark musk and a 'clean' moss. The high somewhat floral note completely dissapates and it is still amazing.

    Greed

I... Have no idea about this one. It smells green, dark green, like money. Extremely earthy, with subtle enough moss noted that I don't hate it. The patchouli comes off warm, and there is something Smokey wafting in the background. There's also something just slightly sweet providing a base for everything. I should dislike this based on the notes, but they all blend together into something that I could see myself wearing a lot! Go Beth!

    Twenty-One

Not a morpher on me, true in the bottle, wet and dry. I'm surprised, because I loathe gin, but this is actually amazing. The main scent is strong juniper with just a touch of clear booze heightening and sharpening it. I get an incredibly distinct lime oil scent as well, more pronounced on the skin than in the bottle. This scent is refreshing, clean and bracing. I think it will be wonderful come the dog days of summer. A surprise winner for me! ETA: this lasts forever and has huge throw.

    Pollution

In the bottle this does very much smell bright, green and almost cleanly fuzzy. On wet it brightens significantly, most likely the daviana, although I personally do not find it floral in the least, it's more of a citrus note than floral. The green musk is sharper than other musks I have tried, and I think the daviana is contributing to that. On dry the brightness softens quite a bit, with amber entering the song. It's actual amber that works well on my skin, moving the scent from a bright green to a very nice lighter tone. This one is kind of defying description for me. I feel it is more masculine that Famine, less masculine than Crowley. It will definitely be going into my rotation, however I'm much more mad for Famine and Crowley than Pollution, which is funny, because in the bottle I actual fancy Pollution more than Famine. Never judge a BPAL by the bottle sniff, I suppose!

    Famine

Ah...Good Omens is one of my favorite books and this line is turning into an unabashed success for me. In the bottle Famine has a high lilac note, with soft musky undertones. On wet, as it warms, the tobacco becomes more pronounced, but not like a cigarette, more of the actual plant (if you know that smell.) The lilac begins to recede here and quiets down. The tea note becomes more pronounced, tannic as black tea typically is, but in wonderful proportion to the almost sweetness of the tobacco and lilac. On dry it really shines. The musk becomes more assertive and the frankincense sweetens and resonates with the rest of the notes, leading an incense like quality to the blend. The musk is really amazing in this blend, and I find the whole to be pretty gender neutral. It is a darker, warm scent, which I think will get better with age. It's just so nice.

    Kumiho

I received this as a lovely frimp from Usagi. In the imp it is bright and slightly astringent, not a bad thing. On wet...ooh, this may very well be my favorite ginger note yet. On dry...the ginger picks up it's lemony vibe, and is mellowed by the tea note. It's amazing. And it lasts forever, this one is great!

    Street Festival

Not a morpher for me, pretty true in the bottle, wet and dry. Wet, tart fruits sweetened with honey, vanilla and the lovely vanilla-esque goodness of benzoin. I like it very much, although I know I have something else pretty similar. I only wish I got some clove from it, that'd be awesome. Still, a very nice, relaxing, probably even better during the warm months, scent.

    Requesting Recommendations for Newbie

For fresh mowed grass, you want Thunder and Blazes if you can find it, from Carnaval. Or "A Blade of Grass" which, for me at least, is nothing but perfectly chlorophylly green cut grass.

    The Shivering Boy

Got mine from a decant circle as well, so the 2012 version. In the imp...oh, I like it. It is a bit chilly, with a sweetness to it. On wet...still cool, sharp, but with a warm resin note to it. There is some tart...almost fruitiness when it hits the skin. I'm not getting the frozen, ozone smell I get from something like MiM or Blue Snowballs (both of which I adore), but a more crisp note. On dry...I like this even more dry! The vineyard scent seems to take some head now, and the frankincense warms and mellows the sharpness from when it was wet. The benzoin also provides a very nice sweetness with the teeniest hint of vanilla peeking through the cold notes. All in all, I quite enjoy this blend, and it's so far one of my fave Yules. I would like a partial bottle of this...and I think I may have found one!
  18. Hmm...as others have mentioned this smells 'yellow' in the imp. On wet it is a bit discordant, likely the sharpness of the yuzu mixing with some of the florals. On dry I like it better, the bergamot comes out and plays nicely with the lemon. It is only lightly floral for me at this stage, which is good. The eucalyptus is hovering, lightly, in the background, giving it a cool quality. I could see this being nice in the warm months. While I wasn't sure I liked this when on wet I think the drydown is quite nice. I am getting a tiny bit of 'soapiness' now that it's been on a bit longer. I'm undecided on this one, so it'll get another test before I make any drastic decisions.

    Sugared incense

Theyve probably been mentioned but Hollywood Babylon and Kabuki are both nice scents with a forefront of sweet cherry with an undercurrent on incense. I love them both.

    Oakmoss

Crowley is great for all its notes. I love it so much!

    Mme. Moriarty, Misfortune Teller (2006)

This. Is. A.Maze.Ing. In the imp...super sexy red musk (I adore musks, red is my favorite, besides the 'infernal' musk in Crowley) with a touch of purple fruits sweetening it more and vanilla giving it a creamy, lovely base. On wet...complex, the vanilla becomes more assertive as it warms, cuddling the musk in a sweet, scrumptious embrace. On dry...the fruits sweeten the musk a bit further, but not in a cloying way, rather providing a lovely base for the musk to sing. The vanilla remains wonderfully, perfectly pronounced and warm, like vanilla sugar. Now the patchouli becomes just noticeable enough to enhance the scent and deepen it. I am simply amazed. All in all...I must, must must have more. Bring back the carnival! Do it now!!! This is a bottle buy, a backup buy and maybe a backup backup buy!!!!!

    Ligur

Yarp, this is a dark scent, but what would you expect for one named after a demon? In the imp...this is a disquieting scent. It's the oakmoss mixing with a sweeter resin... On wet...dark and smokey. Much more pleasant than the imp...not sure I love it. The more I experiment with 'moss' scents the less I dig them. On dry...ah, here we go. The resins sweeten and darken and the moss note softens significantly. A smoky tone emerges, but is sweetened by...something...a sweet resin? This scent is defying description for me. But I quite like it now. (not as much as Lambs Wool, which I have on the other wrist, but I'm still a fan, I'm keeping the imp!) So, since I couldn't define these notes, and I'm working hard to learn them, I did some research! Did you guys know that Oblibanum is another name for frankincense? That explains the sweeter resin note. Khus is the name of Chrysopogon zizanioides or...Vetiver (ah, the smokiness!) And Opopanax is more commonly known as Sweet Myrrh! (The darker resin undertone here!) Finally Ti is an evergreen, and a member of the aspargus family, which explains the very slight piney note underpinning the other scents! (Also, people use the leaves to make sleds!) How interesting!!!!

    Lambs-Wool

True from the imp to wet on the skin to dry on the skin...almost 0 morph at all... And I'm so fine with that! Lambs Wool is the filling of a juicy apple pie, redolent with nutmeg and clove. Amazingly spicy and warm and tempered by a sweet sugar kiss. The apples are very much a red type, lush and juicy. This would be a wonderful scent to warm up after a long day playing in the snow. I'm a fan!! ETA: I don't notice any milk notes in this at all...but they may be there smoothing out the spices, just not super 'milky' if you know what I mean!

    Event Horizon

In the imp...dark, sinuous, a touch of thick sweetnes. On wet...lovely, strong opium with a resin like sweetness. On dry...the orchid brightens the darkness of the opium and the sweetness remains without becoming foodie. The floral may be a little much for me, but I feel the opium might bring it down enough to work for me. All in all, ill keep the imp, but I don't really need more. Eta: so I got curious and looked up benzoin. Turns out it is a resin with a vanilla ice cream like scent, which must be providing those resin notes and some of the sweetness. You learn something new everyday!

    Thorns

In the imp: smells green, dry... On wet: very green with a sharp metallic tang to it...the blood dripping from the thorns. There is a bit of dry woody scent...the combo it almost smells like some type of nut butter, like a combo of almond and peanut butter...not a big fan at this stage. On dry...I like it much better dry. The green and wood blend nicely and the tang of copper sharpens the scent. The salty note, which combined with the wood made me think of a nut butter, calms down and freshens the scent. I actually quite like it now. I thought for sure it was a swapper...but I think ill hold onto the imp, I have nothing like it! Eta: on further sniffing I think I note a teensy touch of something cold, almost a menthol, which tempers the green and keeps it from going chlorophyll. Nice touch.
