    sniffy sniffy

We Arizonans had our first successful Meet N Sniff in Mesa yesterday. It was such a treat to meet all my fellow BPAL addicts. And how cool to check out everyone's collections and swap right there. It was like Christmas! I've been chomping at the bit lately to place another order but I have to wait until after Christmas because I am BROKE. The kind of broke that deserves those capital letters unfortunately. In the meantime, however, I've come up with a new list for my order. 5ml Penny Dreadful [1 set] Salon Exhibit 1 imp pack 5ml Lick It Again 5ml Jacob's Ladder 5ml Mme. Moriarty, Misfortune Teller If I can do all of those, that will be fantastic but if not, I may just go with the Yule scents and the Penny Dreadful for now. We'll see. Eeek I can't wait for the CD update!! *fidgets*

    The Peacock Queen

At first sniff, I thought that this was WAY too rose for me BUT after wearing it and giving it a chance I began to really love it. The rose tamed a bit and something lovely and green emerged. It was still ROSE but not your grandmother's rose. It was a gorgeous, sexy, and definitely haughty red rose. I love this very much and it lasts like no other rose I've tried.

    Penny Dreadful

This smells EXACTLY like it is described and as I hoped it would! This was one that I wanted because of the name and was lucky enough to love it too. Rich upturned earth and that classic perfume that your great grandmother wore when she was young. Gorgeous! I must have a bottle.

    Numb

I just obtained a bottle of Numb during a meet n sniff, thank you Nachtwulf! At first sniff, I was intrigued and then I found out about it's reputation. I have a thing for the underdog so I had to have it. It's very violety but not so much that it gives me a headache and it doesn't give me visions of my grama's potpourri box. It's actually quite nice and powdery on me. It has excellent throw which is good because that is rare for me. It's a bit sharp close to my skin but I can forgive because I don't need to bury my nose in my wrist to smell it. Definitely a good winter or middle of summer scent.

    Mme. Moriarty, Misfortune Teller (2006)

I thought there was no way this would smell good on me. People were comparing it to Snake Oil and Smut (both of which hated me) but I got myself an imp so that I could try. I am SO glad that I did! It's amazing! In the bottle, I swear it smells just like Voodoo. I second the Dr. Pepper thing because that's exactly what it smells like to me. Fortunately, on me, it doesn't stay that way. Wet on I got a lot of spice and definitely red musk with just a touch of patchouli. As it dries, the spices mellow and the vanilla emerges along with what I swear is sandalwood...although I've been known to smell sandalwood all over the place whether its actually there or not. It's in the background but it's the same note that I love in Underpants. I don't get any of the fruit, which is a blessing for me since we don't get along at all. Conclusion: I LOVE this. It's not as long lasting as I had hoped but it's amazing and I can always apply. I'm going to need a couple of bottles. This is also the first CD scent that has truly worked. Hurray!

Thanks ivyandpeony for merging the threads. I think we're still trying to determine whether scents can be related to our signs but you might want to try Shub-Niggurath in the Springtime in Arkham series. It's spicy!

    Lick It Again

Oh God Yes So yeah I obviously like it so I'll try to be a bit more articulate on the subject. I raced home because I knew it was waiting for me in my mailbox and immediately opened it. First sniff was pure peppermint candy. Yum so far! On, the peppermint mellowed slightly and gave way to the sugary goodness underneath. Amazingly it then turned into Underpants! Musky, sexy sandalwood with a generous smear of frosting. At first I thought it was just me (13 did the same thing) but it seems I'm not the only one! Could there be a bit of sandalwood hidden in this blend? So yes, on my wrists it's now almost completely Underpants with just a tiny jolt of mint. I tried it all over (because yay I loved it) and I'm getting way different reactions in different areas. All of them are tingling but some areas (like the crook of my arm and boobs) are holding the mint while others are definitely Underpants. So awesome! What an amazing scent! And I'm also having to hold myself back from licking. Bad Jessie! Thank you to the lab for this one! I will be stocking up before they disappear for sure.
  8. I have a very serious dilemma! My list of bottles that I need to buy before December 1st is seriously straining (if not trampling on) my budget. I was able to try an imp of Pumpkin Queen thanks to the fantastic portalkat so I know I want that. I've dying to try Glitter for so long, it seems sad not to scoop up a bottle with the resurrection! There are a few others that are calling to me too but I have to be strong. I'm thinking of just getting 3 bottles period. Whether that's two Queens and one Glitter or one Queen, one Glitter and another scent is another matter.....I don't even know why I want Glitter so desperately anyway. All the notes are pretty much guaranteed to not like me but there is something about wearing a scent called Glitter that is too awesome for words. Well I suppose we'll see what happens. I suppose reading the reviews might help narrow it down a bit. :sighs and trudges back to work:

    Loviatar

I've never reviewed this!? Horrors! Loviatar is one of my favorite scents and probably the one BPAL that has completely thrown me and made into the devoted fanatic that I am today. So here, in honor of finally acquiring a bottle, is my review. I'm a vegetarian and I try my darndest to avoid leather and other animal goods but damn if I don't love the smell of leather....particularly Beth's leather blend. Fortunately for me, it is cleverly manufactured so there is no guilt. I tried Loviatar originally because a) leather and b ) someone referred to it as being a dominatrix scent. Awesome! I thought it would be a bit dark but it was perfect. Deep and full bodied myrrh and musk with a sharp hint of leather. And it smelled delicious on too. It just melts right into my skin and takes up residence like it's meant to be there. I've read a lot of reviews where people call it masculine, and I can totally see that, but on me it's very feminine although I can't really tell you why. I think it's just because it makes me feel sexy. It has fantastic throw and lasts nearly all day. I can still pick up faint whiffs on my wrists by the end of a long workday and that is saying a lot! I'm thoroughly delighted to finally have a bottle so that I can indulge in full body slathering!! Yay!

    Thirteen (13): October 2006

In the bottle it smelled like cocoa with just a hint of citrus and a bit of smoke. On wet, I got chocolate with maybe a tiny bit of the citrus but with lavender starting to take over. As it dried, the lavender became stronger until that was all I could detect beneath the chocolate. Oooh chocolate covered lavender! Not bad at all. After completely drying it turned into Underpants until it faded away! I love it but it's a bit masculine for me. I'm wondering if it might not be pretty darn heavenly on a man. I'll have to find one to spill it on..... In the meantime, I'll try it again because I really want to like it on me and I want it to last longer than a half hour!
  11. jessiesquash

    yum yum yummy

I got my 13 order yesterday and I'm in heaven!! 13 is such an interesting scent. At first it starts out a bit chocolatey and then the citrus emerges and gives it an aquatic scent. I couldn't stop smelling myself! After completely drying, it became Underpants! This is like a more masculine Underpants ----> Manties! I might have to accidently spill it on that special guy! Also in the order were Snow-flakes, Snow Maiden and my beloved Loviatar! I'm wearing the latter today and feeling particularly domineering because of it. Now I just have to wait patiently for my next order of Lick It Again!!!!!!! *fidgets*
  12. jessiesquash

    What scents are masculine? Gender-neutral?

Shhhh..........I'm saving Geek only because I think it would smell divine on a guy. It's too masculine for me. And I'm single!

    Christmas Order Planning

Damn all the fabulous resurrected scents! Now I'll have to totally reevaluate my order plans. Before December 1, 2006 Pumpkin Queen (2) Yoki Onna Glasya (not sure about the dragon's blood but taking the chance anyway.) Glitter (i've wanted to try this for awhile now.) $70.00 Before February 1, 2007 Jacob's Ladder 2006 (sounds divine) Sol Invictus Stardust 2006 (dying to try!) The Penitent Magdalen $70.00 Holy crap, I'm going to be broke after all of this! I'm trying very hard to ignore Purple Phoenix because it is pretty much guaranteed to not work for me and I'm trying not to buy it anyway. I'm also not counting anything that I fall in love with and need more of because I'm expecting that will happen at least once.

Thanks ivyandpeony! That's exactly the thread I was talking about. Does this need to be moved then? I disagree that scent preference is a minute detail. I consider my sense of smell to be one of my most important senses and I think the effect it has on us is very interesting. I think what I'm looking for is a more general attraction to elements rather than specific scents, totally irrelevant of skin chemistry. A lot of what we like/dislike is shaped by our experiences and genetic makeup but the same can be said for our personalities. Wouldn't it then also be possible that our birth chart could also give clues to what our noses would like? I'm not saying that everyone born under say, Cancer should be expected to like foodie scents but it would be safe to say that Cancers (in general) would be more attracted to comforting scents that remind them of familar things. That's what I'm trying to get. What I'm looking for in reference to this particular Gemini is an idea of what would catch his eye (or nose in this case). For instance, if he was a more romantic type I'd go for a more traditional, floral, feminine blend. Since it seems Geminis like change and variety, I should probably go a bit more unconventional and change it up whenever I can.

    broke but smellin' good

I'm pretty broke right now which leaves me jonesin' for a little retail therapy. Instead of causing further damage to already bruised wallet, I'm going to do a little advanced planning for my next order which will have to include some Christmas gifts...but also a handful of nice things for me! Pumpkin Queen (I adore pumpkin but Jack hated me and according to reviews, this isn't at all like Jack. I thought I'd give it a try!) Lick It Again (I'm really not a foodie person but this sounds so yummy, I just have to try it! The thought of smelling like a sugary candy cane definitely has it's allure.) Jacob's Ladder 2006 (This sounds perfectly wonderful although I'm not sure if I want to get this now or later. I suppose it will depend upon my budget at order time.) I want something from the GC but I haven't decided which one yet. I was thinking about getting something appropriate for cold weather but I can't decide yet. I'm thinking Sloth, Black Rose or Anubis. My friend Leslie gets an imp pack but I haven't decided if I want to get her a mix of love potions or the Salon set. Because of my budget, I'd have to split up the Salon set between her and someone else. If I did the love potions set I'd probably do; Lucy's Kiss, Whip, Les Petite Mort, Libertine, Les Bijoux, and Snake Oil. It will be fun. I'll be gift-giving and enabling all in one fell swoop. Glorious! I was also thinking of using imps as random extras with gifts so I'll have to acquire a few for that purpose. Maybe the Wanderlust with different scents for those interested in various places. Actually I have an idea! I should make a spa package for my cousins based on where they like to go. A Kyoto/Neo-Toyko/Kabuki one for my cousin Mindy (who lived in Japan) with some candles and bath stuff along that theme. All cherry blossoms and pink! I love Christmas planning!

ya know ms. valentina the scents you just described in the first part of your post are the darker, evil gem twin that lurks inside me... but i do adore "hot'n'spicy" scents as well...and certain deep, dark aquatics are my friend too...that is my "other side"...cuz we are all about the duality baby... duality Ooh good to know! You know it's interesting because I like the darker blends too but I'm pretty typical Cancer. Although I think that ties in with my moodiness because I also like light, sweet scents. On others I tend to like complex blends with vanilla-especially on guys!

I think you're definitely right about skin chemistry and associations but I just wanted to get a general feel for what a Gemini would hypothetically be attracted to. And in more of a theoretical way for example; would a Leo be attracted to more dominant scents because of that personality trait? Or would it be an opposite reaction because they don't like competition. What scents do you tend to like? And actually many acquatics give me a headache too....it's only Beth's blends that I can handle.

Hey everyone! I thought I saw a similar thread awhile back but now I can't find it so....mods, if there is one please let me know and all that. I'm interested in scent recommendations specifically for attracting a Gemini but I'm also interested in what you all think about scent preference relating to your sun sign. For example I'm a Cancer and I tend to like warm comforting scents, watery blends and scents that remind me something I like; places, foods, etc....... So for me there seems to be a correlation. Thoughts?

    you know you're obsessed when....

I dreamt last night that I was at someone's house and they were otherwise occupied so I got into their BPAL! They had all sorts of the new scents that I was dying to try (Pumpkin Queen) and so I had a lovely time sniffing my way through. That's all I remember but isn't that a lovely dream! Pumpkin Queen smelled lovely by the way.

    Jezebel

In the bottle: Sharp rose and something else sweet. I assume this is the honey but I hadn't read the description when I first tested it. First on: ROSES!! Much rose but not overwhelmingly so. Unfortunately there was something sour there too. I almost washed it off at that point but I'm glad I didn't because then it turned powdery. Dry down: The powdery rose smell is still there but now it's starting to smell like my beloved Alice but with roses and less milk. I'm not getting the sandalwood at all which is so odd because normally it either HATES me or (very rarely) it loves me. Conclusion: It's not spectacular and it smells quite a lot like Alice but it's a nice soft, alluring scent. And who wouldn't want to wear a scent called Jezebel?! It makes me feel seductive! I will definitely try this one again.

    The Carpathian Mountains

In the bottle, this smelled exactly like what I imagined; cold wind, bracing pine and wild flowers. I was so excited! This was perfect for my winter scent this year. On me though.......wintergreen toothpaste! NOOOOOOOOOOO! Ugh. This batch of LE's are not liking me at all.
  22. jessiesquash

    Dia de los Muertos

In the bottle: Yum! The first thing that hits me is the tobacco and something sweet. A bit like rotten fruit but not in a bad way....if that makes any sense. Wet on: Ooh this is a lot like Red Lantern but not as decadent and I can definitely pick up the crackling of dry leaves and I'm even getting a bit of the incense. Dry down: Nooooooo! Please tell me this isn't morphing into cheap perfume from hell on me. It seriously is reminding me of something I wore when I was little and not very choosy. Dammit! Evil skin chemistry. Okay, I'm going to give this another go simply because it was so gorgeous to begin with. And tobacco is always so fantastic on me. *sniff* If it doesn't work, I'll just have to find myself another Halloweenie scent for the Fall season.....oh darn!
  23. jessiesquash

    The Candy Butcher 2006

In the bottle: Cocoa and cream! I HAD to try it right away! Wet on: Pure chocolate. Normally I don't like totally foodie scents but I was kind of digging it. I had the urge to lick myself. Dry down: Now this is where it gets a bit weird. Suddenly, out of nowhere, emerges sandalwood! Is there sandalwood in here at all or is it just me? But no, that's really what I smelled. On me, this became Chocolate Underpants! But am I into it, that is the question..... I didn't have much of a chance to decide because it faded rather quickly. However, it's definitely worth another chance because I Underpants and so it would make sense that I would also the chocolate-covered version as well. I'm a bit surprised that no one else got that because it was such a strong association but then again, Underpants is the only foodie scent that has captured my heart. Bliss and Gluttony made my teeth ache! Will test it again tonight and see what happens. And in the meantime I just had to wear Underpants today!! EDIT: No sandalwood. I must have been dreaming. It turns out Candy Butcher smells like chocolate covered burned plastic on me. Sucks.

    pending orders

I'd really like to place an order right now but I can't....not for a couple weeks at least. I'm a bit broke right now. But because I can't resist plotting future orders, here is what I'm planning. Next order: Pumpkin Queen (yes I'm caving!), Jacob's Ladder, Knecht Ruprecht, a 5ml of Sloth and maybe an imp pack of the Salon scents. I want to have some nice warm, spiced scents for Autumn (my favorite season) and then I'll start planning my winter scents. Winter order: Stardust, Lick It Again (!!!!), The Winter of our Discontent for sure and then something for a good friend who I'm trying to push nudge over into the dark side. Although I don't know what scent I should get her....maybe an imp pack to try?? Okay seriously, back to work.
  25. jessiesquash

    long time no obsess

Well not really, I'm always fighting the urge to buy buy buy and I'm sure many of you sympathize with me there. I just placed two orders that I'm dying to finally get! The first one consists of; Lucy Westenra, The Carpathian Mountains (because how awesome is it to have Dracula-themed scents), Dia De Los Muertos 2006 (my only Halloweenie scent) and three CD scents; Carnival Diabolique, Midnight on the Midway and The Candy Butcher. These will be my first CD scents so I'm super super excited about it! I feel like I'm the only one not talking about them! My next order is a bit more conservative and includes; 13 (because I couldn't resist), a 5ml of Loviatar and two Yules (Snow Maiden and Snowflakes) that I hope work on me although I don't have high hopes. It's funny, I have a zillion imps waiting for me to try, I belong to the GC swap circle AND I still haven't made up my mind about the Dark Moons and yet here I am needing more! I guess I'm just crazy. I've been trying, rather unsuccessfully to get a few local friends equally obsessed but so far, nothing. I even bring out the imps when people come over and have them sniff! What's wrong with these people!? I'm planning a party for this Saturday to break in my brand new apartment and (ultimately) seduce a guy I know and I'm not only planning food and drinks but also scent.......do I want to go sexy or innocent? I'm thinking of using Red Lantern, Underpants, Loviatar or Alice. Red Lantern and Loviatar might be a bit overpowering and Underpants maybe too sweet but I feel like Alice is an everyday scent and not so much party material. I suppose it all depends on what I want to project; decadence, sex, dominance or innocence.....although Loviatar might give me some much needed confidence and maybe I could layer it on top of Follow Me Boy or #20 Love Oil for extra oomph. I just can't believe more people don't understand the importance of the right scent for the right occasion. Hasn't anyone else heard that adage; you wear clothes for other women but you wear scent for a man. I don't know if he's a scent guy at all but it can't hurt to have that in my corner. And I'm done preaching to the choir.
