    New Year's Eve in Dogville

In the bottle this one smells quite sharp and a bit ozone-y. Frankly that scares me. Fortunately, on my skin it immediately softens up and a musky, slightly powdery element comes through. I can smell the champagne note after it has sunk into my skin a bit- this is when I really started to enjoy the blend i really like the concept of this one and once again it's perfect for the painting; however, I don't see myself wearing this one that often as it is not very "me". That being said I will definitely hold onto my decant anyway.

    A Bachelor's Dog

I am loving this scent! I second/third/fourth those who say it reminds them of Buck Moon. The musk used in this blend is exactly the same to my nose both on my skin and in the vial. (for those who have not tried Buck Moon, it's a soft creamy light musk- very smooth and inviting ) This scent doesn't morph too much, it stays on my skin equal part musk leather and tobacco. Despite the tobacco and leather, this is a pretty soft scent; it stays pretty close to the skin. In its last stages it smells mostly like soft musk and cigar, which is just heavenly (I am one of those weirdos who loves how cigars smell although I hate smoking them). I will cherish my bottle and decant of this one, for sure!

    Kelly Pool

Hm. In the vial it smells exactly like how I remember Numb smelled (sorry to make comparisons, but I can't help it!) . This one smells very strange on me- kind of like a vintage clothing store (that "old clothes" smell- not dirty, just old). There is also something weird and soapy that wafts up to my nose as well, but it isn't always there, just intermittently. I think this one definitely matches the painting but it is not something that I would like to smell often. Glad I tried it, though.

    His Station and Four Aces

This is quite a morpher on me. In the bottle I smell lilac and leather exclusively. On my skin, the lilac disappears within two minutes and it's all dark, dark leather with a hint of musk. It doesn't have a lot of throw, but lasts for quite a while. It's definitely a dignified scent, airing a bit on the masculine side, although not entirely so. Usually dark leather scents tend to give me a headache but this one works just fine for me. I am not usually a very dressy or fancy person but this scent would be very appropriate for when I do feel in the mood to be decadent. Another funny thing about this one: it sort of comes full circle on me; in it's very very last stages it smells faintly of lilac and musk, but no leather.

    Monster Bait: Ventriloquist Dummy

Like everyone else, I am getting a very sweet wood scent. I don't smell the apricot in the bottle or on my skin. As it dries it gets a bit drier and spicier. The hazlenut is more apparent. It has a lot of throw and lasts a long time (it even lasted through an hour of working out, too) I really love woody scents, so this one is a big hit, although, like most others, this smells nothing like I thought it would.

    Taurus 2007

Wow, this blend is gorgeous! I used to think that rose did not behave well for me but lately Beth has been putting out these great blends with rose that actually work on me skin! Taurus is surely on of those blends. As soon as it hits my skin it is a lush floral (rose violet and apple blossom mainly- but I am not too familiar w/what daisy smells like) with a touch of herbs. For a quick 5 minutes or so there is a faint sharpness, but it goes away and the same lush floral/herbal scent remains. Taurus is one of the most spring-y scents that I have smelled in a while, right up there with Beltane (I suppose Poisson will be up there too but I haven't gotten it yet...). It's very reminiscent of a breezy day in the garden. Another pleasant surprise from BPAL

    Monster Bait: Tokyo Stomp

I don't know what to say about this one that hasn't already been said. It smells like a thin mint cookie both in the bottle and on my skin, and lasts for quite a long time, although with not too much throw. I love it, and am tremendously glad I ordered muliple bottles unsniffed! :D
  8. I second this. FB is extremely similar to Blood Countess on my skin, too. I also think that you might really enjoy Alice and Bathsheba.

    Rose Moon!

Wow this one's gonna leave me extra super broke. All the blends are so expensive!! I alreayd placed an order for the moons and the lone DPP that I had left to order (and a little ol' bottle of Alecto) but I might have to place another one to add in the missing Gemini since I am one of those nutters who collects all the astrological blends. Anyway here are my little thoughts.... ROSE MOON Thou art false, O moon, as the hearts of men. I will not, will not love again. Bulgarian rose, tea rose, violet leaf, opium poppy, Bois de Jasmin, patchouli leaf, honey, blue lilac, balsam, woodruff, and lemon peel. Hmm...now I do not like tea rose. Well, I like it's smell but on my skin it turns to acetone. However, Bulgarian rose is OK. As are the rest of the notes. aaannnd, I love patchouli leaf, honey and balsam a whole lot. So like the adventurer I am (lol, more like consumer or something) I decided to chance it. If it turns to the dreaded acetone I will jut find it a better home. BLUE MOON Mugwort and bay, for psychic sensitivity… Juniper, for divination through dreams… Orchid and galbanum, for complexity, wisdom and noscere… … with a potent lunar-charged blend of exquisite Asian woods, moonflower, Madagascan ylang ylang, Florentine iris, Greek cypress, davana, green tea absolute, palmarosa, cucumber, Clary sage, melilot trefoils, wood aloes, and pale creeping buttercup. Not sure how this will work on me, but I do love a lot of the notes in it. The only iffy ones are ylang ylang and moonflower. So, I'm also going to give this one a try. I didn't think I would like Black Moon (which seems a bit similar) and it is lovely on me, so you never know. TAMAMO-NO-MAE Tamamo-no-Mae’s scent is soft skin musk, brushed by white tea leaf, rice flower, black locust flower, white sandalwood kodo smoke, dry ginger, benzoin gum, and Amacha. This sounds amazing! I like all of the notes so it was an instant purchase. The asian themed scents tend to do well with me, so I am excited to try it... GEMINI 2007 Mutable Air: the essence of thought. Lavender, benzoin, orchid, and frankincense. I love lavendar, benzoin, orchid and, you guessed it, frankincense. I am not sure how they will all smell together but I trust Beth so I will definitely get a bottle. BAT Dusty amber, grey musk, red orchid, moonflower, night-blooming phlox, stock, honeysuckle, English ivy, toadflax, and purple salvia. Hm. It sounds good until the moonflower and phlox come in. Phlox has tainted several blends for me in the past. I think for this one I will hunt down and imp or decant later on. CLEOPATRA TESTING POISONS ON THOSE CONDEMNED TO DEATH Accords of peach kernel, hemlock, aconite, and belladonna, with bitter almond, saffron, honey, myrrh, hyssop, frankincense, and palm. I think this will be a lovely herbal blend. I would love to get a bottle at some point, although not immediately since I am not teh broke. I must mention that I am overjoyed with the use of frankincense lately!! DEATH AND LIFE COMPLETED Grey amber, carnation, lemon balm, hydrangea, Chinese peony, white sandalwood, cypress, juniper, cedar, hibiscus, and African daisy. I don't know how this one would smell, but I think it would be good. I love hibiscus and peony. Carnation is good depending on what it is with. I would like to try an imp of this one at some point. FOX FIRES ON NEW YEAR’S EVE AT THE GARMENT NETTLE TREE AT OJI Weeping cherry, watery bamboo pulp, nettle tree bark, green tea incense, soft musk, rice wine, and Japanese tree lilac. Ooh, green tea incense? What is this you speak of? I am very interested in how that would smell. Very. I think this will be ordered along with the bottle of Gemini. KIYOHIME CHANGES FROM A SERPENT Salty ocean spray, red kelp, black plum, lychee, sea moss, green musk, hachiya, plum blossom, and matcha. Another interesting Asian themed scent. I don't think I've ever tried green musk or red kelp...and this one has lychee which I like very very much. This screams bottle to me. Where is that money tree when you need it? LOVE AND PAIN Lavender, Balkan tobacco, black musk, dark vanilla, and golden copaifera. I love lavendar but am unsure how it would mix with tobacco. This seems like it could be a winner but I would like to try an imp first. MACBETH AND THE WITCHES Lightning-charged ozone, steel, myrrh, mugwort, colophony, ajowan, and leather. Nope. Ozone and leather will surely give me a headache. I love the painting, though. MAD MEG Fire-scorched earth, black mandarin, cinnamon bark, bitter almond, sage, vetiver, and balsam of peru. This is another curious one. I am not sure that I would like all of these notes together, but I do love them all separately. Imp. MADONNA Hyssop, pomegranate, Angel’s Trumpet, Indonesian patchouli, iris, white orchid, and frankincense. This sounds gorgeous. I am going to get a bottle soon. (frankincense! pomegranite! yay!!!) MONNA VANNA Russian rose, mimosa, gardenia, bois du rose, parma violet, calla lily, red currant, ambergris, and bourbon vanilla. This one seems a bit too "womanly" or perfumey for me. I think I will read the reviews and if they seem to prove me wrong I will hunt down a sample. PHILOSOPHER IN MEDITATION Smoldering woodfire embers, Galen’s Kyphi, and Abramelin incense. This sounds right up my alley. bottle. SCHLAFENDE BAIGNEUSE Skin musk, white cream, honeycomb, yellow rose, King mandarin, chrysanthemum, golden amber, honeysuckle, and wide-throated yellow monkey-flower accord. OK that last flower made me giggle a bit. This sounds like a perfect spring and summer blend to me. I am going to get a bottle of it as soon as I can. I can only imagine how good the honeycomb and cream will blend together...yummmm. THE SMILING SPIDER Bitter clove, black musk, mahogany wood, and patchouli. I think the little guy is quite adorable And this is my most anticipated blend of the bunch. I love all of these notes dearly and can't wait to try it! SPIRIT OF THE KOMACHI CHERRY TREE Cherry blossom, blue lilac, lavender monofloral honey, white sandalwood, and Asian pear. Ooo. bottle. Damn all of these blends for sounding so incredible. I would love to have a pear honey and sandalwood blend. love. SUNFLOWER Sunflower bouquet, black amber, creeping black moss, wilted greenery, and scorched, dry stems. I'm happy to see some Egon Schiele. He is one of my favorite painters. That being said, this looks wonderful. The thought of wilted greenery really peaks my interest. Also, I had a sunflower scented perfume oil when I was in high school and I have been rather missing it lately. I hope this one will smell predominantly of sunflower, because that would make me happy! (eventual bottle...) SUNRISE WITH SEA-MONSTERS Ocean mist, kelp, ambergris, amber, white pear, osmanthus, freesia, and seafoam accord. Although this sounds like a lovely aquatic, they are not usually my thing. Freesia can be odd with me, too. I think I am more intrigued by Kiyohime than this one, but I will look out for reviews to see if it ends up interesting me. So that is all! I am definitely going to try and snag a bottle of Biggercritters at some point in the month. I really wish I had a way to make more money here...I guess I will have to wait until it is legal for me to work after the end of the school year (for now its under the table music gigs for me! ). Blargh. Anyway this was a lovely update that came at the best day possible- when I am home sick and feeling like shit. It really cheered me up

    The Scales of Deprivation

This blend has a really dry and sunny feel to me. It smells of lemony herbs left out in the sun on a balmy day. There is also the tinge of frankincense that adds some lovely depth to it. Mmm. I am really liking this! It seems to be a bit on the masculine side, but is in no way a cologne-y type of smell. I would have no qualms about wearing this. I think also that it would make a lovely room scent since it has that warm, calm type of feel to it. I just love frankincense and herbs and this blend is a real winner for me.

    Stranger in Camp

This might be my favorite foresty blend ever! Wet it is very strongly pine, but a FRESH pine, one of holding needles the you just plucked in the palm of your hand and taking a deep whiff When it dries, it gets a bit more mellow and rounded- there is the scent of smoke that comes in. Now it smells more like a campsite in the morning- dewy forest and the ashes of last night's campfire. It s a very strong scent- I bet that too much would give one a pretty big headache. I really like this one a lot, and will definitely order a bottle. This is a versatile scent even though it is of something so specific; I would wear this out but also use it as a room scent. Wonderful interpretation!

    A Bold Bluff

Whoo! Cherry tobacco. That is all that A Bold Bluff is for its entire wet stage on my skin. Then, magically, as it dries, the hops decide that they want to turn to cat pee. So basically, this one smelled like cherry tobacco + cat pee and a bit of creamy tonka on my skin. It's a pity, because I was really hoping this one would work.
  13. euterpe414

    Almond and Amaretto

Yes, yes. I keep forgetting to snag a bottle of Baron Samedi when I order. It is most definitely gender neutral imo. And delicious. Asp Viper, to me, is really really big on the amaretto factor, too.

    Black Lotus

disclaimer: lotus notes do NOT go bubblegum on my skin, and I rather like them. This is so GORGEOUS on me! The resins really help temper the sweet tendencies of the lotus, making the sweetness just the right amount that I like. The two elements (resin and sweet lotus) meld together so beautifully on my skin- definitely no mustiness with my chemistry (phew!). This is a very mysterious and womanly scent, imo. A scent for someone who is not afraid of their sensuality. I don't really feel the evil in this scent, just more of a dark shadowy beauty. I love this and will always want to have a bottle on hand!

    Desire

On my skin I get a lot of neroli, a hint of vanilla and rose. The darker patchouli and musk seem to form a backdrop for the lighter notes. This is a very lovely, sophisticated scent that at some points in the drydown almost gives off a foody feel. There's not a lot of throw, and while this is a rich scent, it doesn't get cloying, which is good! To my nose, after it has been on my skin a while, this blend reminds me strongly of The Haunted Palace. However it's a touch more heavy and brooding. I would definitely get a bottle, but I already have Haunted Palace for this type of scent. When I run out, however, a bottle of Desire will definitely be snagged
  16. euterpe414

    Le Serpent Qui Danse

Eeps! This is not a scent for me. I can pick out the violet and gardenia but the vanilla is rather quiet. When it dries on my skin I am getting something akin to laundry detergent. No way, not for me. I had to wash it off. This one's going to a new home, stat!

    Pride

Vanity in extremis. The scent of rabid hauteur: Moroccan rose and narcissus. Rose is very iffy on my skin, as those who have read my reviews before know. Narcissus, however, I really love. It is a heady floral, but has this certain rich quality to it that I love, and does not ever go sharp or wonky on me at all. So basically this blend had a 50% chance of working on me, lol. And guess what...it didn't. I can smell the narcissus that I love but the rose is going realllly sharp and acetone-like again. Funny because this is the kind of rose in Harlot (well, one of the kinds of roses) and Harlot does not go sharp on me. Anyway, it smells like Narcisses + acetone on me. Blech. Despite the catastrophe, I will add that this does have the same feel in the imp to me as Black Dahlia, which I have heard others mention before. It's very fitting of the sin it represents and perfect for a proper, fancy woman (or a fancy date or what-have-you). So try this if you like sophisticated heavy florals, or if you simply like Moroccan rose (which I know now that I do not!)

    Relaxing BPAL Scents

Definitely TKO. It is my favorite room scent for bedtime or when I want to relax. Water of Notre Dame is my second favorite scent for these purposes as well. I also love Santa Eularia des Riu . It's a really relaxing herbal/citrus. The florals in it are not heavy when it is used in the oil burner.
  19. euterpe414

    51

Bah...I thought this would be great on me but I am getting...the dreaded hotel soap smell. I don't what is doing it, perhaps the combo of freesia (which is iffy on me anyway) and ozone/aquatics. At least I didn't buy a bottle unsniffed like I wanted to...

    The Parliament of Monsters (2006)

I didn't order this one right away when it came out b/c I was scared of the 'dust' note. That note is what really ruined Krampus for me, so I was a bit biased. However in this blend I am not getting very much dustiness at all. I get a rich, warm incense with hints of tobacco and opium. Really hazy, thick and sweet. This is definitely a 'lazy' scent- it's making me feel very comfortable and relaxed- but most incense scents tend to do that for me. This is a pretty unique incense blend for BPAL, in m opinion. To make a comparison (I know it's annoying, but I can't help it!) it seems the most similar to King Cobra but without the Snake Oil aspect. However that is a pretty vague comparison. Oh and, PoM, to me, is the epitome of a unisex scent. My only complaint about this one is that it does not last very long on my skin. Maybe that is b/c it is hot out today and I am bit sweaty, but after about two hours there is not much left of it. I will surely reapply, but this fact does make me a little bit sad. All in all, this is a great incense blend to have in 'the collection'. I am going to see if aging makes it last a bit longer, sometimes that works with resins. If not, I will slather. My only caution about this one is- if you do not like opium, you most likely will not enjoy this. However if you do...
  21. euterpe414

    Calico Jack

At first this one smells strongly of cologne (both on the bottle and in my skin), but once it begins the drydown that wonderful spicy wood smell begins to come out. The leather, sea and musk sort of make a mishmash in the background- this is mostly a wood scent on my skin. (kind of like smelling the wood on a ship- you are inadvertently smelling the sea air and surroundings, too) I wore this one on a walk by the water and it was so lovely to smell wafting around me. Very appropriate This is not an everyday kind of scent for me, it seems more like a novelty, but I will keep it anyway since I do love pirates and I can see times when I will want to wear this.
  22. euterpe414

    Brown Jenkin

This is a coconut lover's dream! It definitely smells like the entirety of a coconut- brown husks and creamy insides. Never at any stage do i get that 'suntan lotion' coconut smell. After a while on my skin it turns ever more creamy and the sandalwood begins to creep in. This is when I see the comparison to a more incense heavy blend, but on my skin it really retains the coconut first and foremost. Although it does not have a lot of throw (on me), it lasts a very long time and seems to just get better as the time passes. I am definitely getting a bottle of this in my next order, no question!!
  23. euterpe414

    Poisoned Apple

On me this is an incredibly true apple scent- no fake sweetness at all, just crisp juiciness, with a tiny hint of opium to make it poisonous . This doesn't last incredibly long on my skin, but I don't mind reapplying. It is rare for me to find fresh apple scents that don't go weird (Delirium, I mean you) and acrid on me, so I am definitely going to snag a bottle of this soon. It's lovely and fresh and perfect for any time of year. What a great addition to the GC!!

    Whine/Confession Post

ugh, I know how you feel! A friend of mine keeps tagging photos of me that are just incredibly unflattering (not in a fat way, well sometimes, but usually in an 'I'm making the most unattractive face ever' way) and I don't know how to tell her not to...and if I untag it it will look weird. Bleh. The whole 'tagging' thing completely sucks!
  25. euterpe414

    The Cup of Death

This is a light, flowy herbal peach scent to my nose. I detect the lavendar and myrtle (not sure what yarrow smells like but I am probably getting it, too) floating on top of a very ripe, creamy peach. The sandalwood provides a base for all of this lovely activity, but is not specifically present. This scent lasts a fairly long time and doesn't have a lot of throw. It's more of a scent for personal enjoyment. I really enjoy herbal/fruity scents in the springtime and summertime and will most likely pick up a bottle of this one to wear. Lovely and very fitting of the artwork (as always! Beth is so great at this...)
