  1. Snake Oil is a scent that has never worked on me, although I'd really love it to be awesome. So when I found out about the Snake Pit, I hoped that I could track a few of them down and that one of them would work.

Cottonmouth is my first attempt, and it's the one I have the most hope for. In the bottle it has a strong floral scent, but unfortunately on my skin the floral almost disappears. It's not quite straight Snake Oil, and is certainly better than SO, but it's not as floral as I was hoping!

  2.

The Carnaval went dark July 1, 2011

(I went to the Announcements thread & did a search for Carnaval & it brought up the relevant posts - I use this all the time!)

There was discussion about the GC label change earlier in this thread - I think the consensus was 2008?

I'm pretty sure Witch Queen was part of the original Stardust release & same with Circuta for the Vampire's Don't Sleep Alone release.

Thank you!! I was scrolling through the pages of the "New and Shiny" section of the BPAL website and couldn't figure it out. I will be using your trick of searching the announcements thread from now on! That didn't even occur to me.

  3. I just flew in the U.S. with my entire collection. (About 50 bottles and tons of imps. I wanted to share the awesomeness with my mom and sister.) Here's what I did = I put my 15 or favorite bottles in a zip lock bag in my carry-on. That way they would always be on my person. This was the bag of "liquids" that TSA allows you. I just pulled the ziplock bag out of my carry-on and sent it through the x-ray with my coat and shoes. No problem.

The rest of the bottles were bubble wrapped securely and put in a plastic box in my checked bag along with my imps, which were in ammo boxes. Here's the key--I put labels on each box that said "Bath oil samples." This was pretty important as my luggage was opened and searched. A TSA guy even asked me what they were. Once I said, "Oh, just essential oil, like citrus oil" in a kind of off-hand manner, he just said "oh, huh" and went back to looking at the x-ray. I think if you give the TSA people a label for the oil that they will understand, you are good. It's the mystery that gets you in trouble.

I've traveled a lot internationally, and as long as the security people had a simple explanation for my weird stuff, they didn't blink an eye. (And I followed the rule about all carry-on liquids fitting in one quart-sized ziplock bag. Don't try to push this one, even if you have gotten away with a gallon-sized before. It can come back to bite you.)

  4. Hi!! (I hope this thread is the right place for my questions!)

I was wondering if anyone had insight on dating a few bottles I have. I'm relatively new to BPAL--I found out about it in October at NYCC. Because I've been able to obtain a few bottles from EvilBay and the forum, I've become a little obsessed with dating them to at least a given year. Obviously the limited editions are usually easy, but there are some others I can't figure out. I tried to find when the scents were introduced by going through the "New and Shiny" pages and the reviews, but I couldn't figure out when any possible label changes might have happened. Any and all advice would be awesome in helping me narrow these down!!! (Or even the knowledge that it's impossible to figure out.) ;)

Here is the list that I still wonder about:

From Carnaval Diabolique (when did the Carnaval go dark?)

    Mme. Moriarty (2006 - ??)

    Zarita, the Doll Girl (2007 - ??)

    The Grindhouse (2008 - ??)

The Witch Queen (Neil Gaiman's Stardust) (introduced July 2007)

Cicuta (says HOMO STRIGA across the top) (introduced July 2010)

Tamora (amber bottle, white label with filigree and blue edges to the label)

Lucy's Kiss (amber bottle, white label with filigree and blue edges to the label)

    Thank you!!!!!! :wub2:

  5. Hi Everyone!

I was wondering if anyone had thoughts on scents that help them fall asleep. I've been using a bottle of TKO, but I can't really tell if it's making a difference. It smells really sweet to me, and I think might be interfering. I've also tried Somnus, and that might be working a bit better. But before I splurge on a bottle of Somnus, I just wanted to know if anyone else had thoughts on BPAL that helps you sleep. I'm a little desperate...

    Edited: typo

  6. My new love. I canNOT stop smelling my wrist. Every few seconds I lift my arm to take another whiff. I've ever understood those reviewers who say they want to eat their arm, but now I do. This is going to be my "bright mood, feeling happy, good weather" perfume.

Or perhaps, like today, a "life is horrific and I need to wear a stark contrast" scent to remember that there is good in the world. There is. (The killings at Sandy Hook Elementary School were yesterday.)

  7. This scent is a complete surprise for me. I ordered a decant just out of curiosity. I must say, if I had a man I would slather him in this. Seriously. It's just yummy in a masculine sexy times way. I may order a bottle just to wear when I'm feeling a little *roar*. All of that said, it's not aggressive. It's "sit by a roaring fire and make out" sexy times, not "throw you over the hood of the car" sexy times. ;) I hope that makes sense, because I can't think of another way to say it!

  8. This is another Yule that was a fail for me. While I'm sad, my pocketbook is not! :D I can definitely smell the rice pudding, but it just doesn't work on my skin. I do love foody scents, but I think they need to be vanilla or citrus based for me. Somehow the rice or the cream is smelling scorched, and not in a burned sugar kind of way. Kind of as if the pudding was burned and then set out on the counter overnight and forgotten. My skin just didn't like this one.

  9. Gelt

I'm so sad. I had bright hopes for this one, and I keep trying to find a chocolate note that my skin doesn't hate. Gelt is not it. It smells just terrible on me. Kind of cocoa, but also kind of rancid? I'm not sure what the problem is, but there is one! Oh well, off to the swap box for you, little decant.

  10. The Peacock Queen 2012

Whoa! When I first put this scent on it blew me away with ROSE. It felt pure, but at the same time overblown. This is an old-fashioned rose bush you'd find growing beside a gravestone in an old cemetery. (I don't mean that the cemetery is part of the scent, it's just that often the heritage or antique roses can be found in very old cemeteries. The bushes were planted before big companies got into hybridizing!) Anyway - the Queen smells like a flower that has blown (completely opened up) and is on the edge of dying. The scent is heavy, but fades a bit as it dries.

After ten minutes or so, I'm starting to get an "old lady powder" feel. Hopefully that will go away, because I really want to have a rose scent that doesn't have any of the greenery notes that Rose Red has.

  11. Rose Red 2012

To me, Rose Red is "rose in the garden." It smells like I stepped outside into my former rose garden (45 rose bushes) and sat down next to the daisies. It smells like the other plants in the garden have some weight in this scent-the greens that underplant the rose bushes, etc. I haven't decided if I like it, but it certainly brings back memories!

The green note is a little harsh at the beginning, but it's fading nicely after 10 minutes or so. When I first put it on, I didn't think I needed a bottle. Now I'm not so sure! :D

  12. I just got my hands on a bottle of Under the Harvest Moon, and it is a lovely scent for me. Just lovely. It's a soft floral and musk, not sweet, but not heavy at all. However, it doesn't disappear either. I was not expecting to love it as much as I do. It's a perfect scent for a chilly and cloudy day. I wish I could be more precise than that, but I don't know how else to describe it!

  13. I'm not sure if this should go here, but the title of the thread seems to be appropriate! I'm a newbie to BPAL and was curious about the Lunacy scents, specifically which ones were released in which years and if they changed year-to-year. I couldn't find a quick answer in the forum (although that could be the result of an epic fail from my search skills.) Anyway - I decided to do a little investigation and made a chart of the Lunacy scent by month and year. I posted it in my public Dropbox folder, if anyone wants to use it. It's current up to November 2012.

    Lunacy - Month & Year

Note: I used the Lunacy section in the Reviews section of the forum for the dates. If a blend straddled two months, for instance Beaver Moon 2012 (9/27/12–10/1/12), I counted it as being in the first month. Any and all mistakes are mine! If this is helpful or at all interesting, I can keep it up. If it's redundant, I can take it down. If you notice a mistake or I put something in the wrong place, it's easy to change, just let me know.

Mods - I'm pretty new to the forum, so if this breaks a rule somehow, please just delete the post! Thanks!

Edited to Add: Updated the list for December.

  14. Hi Everyone!

I'm fairly new to BPAL, and I am rapidly becoming completely addicted. I'd love to draw my mom, sister, and SIL into all the smelly goodness! I thought that finding BPAL scents that are close to what I remember them wearing might be a place to start. I'm terrible at figuring out notes, but here is what I found on the Internet for the perfumes I remembering them liking. (I think my sister has moved on from her teenage scents, but I thought it wouldn't hurt to be a bit nostalgic!) Any thoughts you have on the following perfumes would be awesome!

Stella - "In the top notes there are rose oil, peony and a gentle touch of fresh tangerine. In the heart of the perfume there is rose, whose gentle scent is emphasized by the deep note of amber in the base." (A few earlier posts mentioned The Empress and Whip as possibilities for Stella. I have imps for both on order!)

Amarige by Givenchy - "The top notes are composed of fresh fruit: peach, plum, orange, mandarin, with the sweetness of rose wood and neroli. The floral bouquet, very intense and luscious, is created of mimosa, neroli, tuberose, gardenia and acacia with a gourmand hint of black currant. The warm woody base is composed of musk, sandalwood, vanilla, amber, Tonka bean and cedar." OR Notes (from Jan Moran): mandarin, neroli, violet leaves, rosewood, gardenia, red fruit, ylang-ylang, acacia farnesiana, mimosa, musk, vanilla, tonka bean, woods, ambergris.

Pleasures by Estee Lauder- Top Notes: White Lilies, Fresh Violet Leaves, Green Accord

Middle Notes: Black Lilies, White Peony, Pink Roses, Jasmine, Karo Karounde blossoms, Baie Rose

    Base Notes: Sandalwood, Patchouli

L'Air du Temps by Nina Ricci - "The floral-spicy note of the carnation is in centre of its composition. Bergamot and rosewood support the development of the carnation theme, refined with the notes of rose and jasmine. Violet and iris give a powdery nuance, and create a harmony with the woodsy notes of cedar and sandal, while sensual musk and amber add the final feminine accord to the composition."

Anais Anais by Cacharel - "Transparent orange blossom with heady hyacinth open the composition. The intensive floral heart blends sweet rose, delicate white lily and magical jasmine. The base is composed of comforting amber, warm sandalwood with a tender touch of misterious incense."

    THANK YOU!!

    Edited for typo.
