    Good scents for travelling, vacations

I'm going on a 7 day cruise to the Mexican Riviera (Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlan, & Puerto Vallarta) in March, and I'd love some scent recommendations for it since none of my current favorites really say "cruise" to me. On a day to day basis, I usually wear Morocco, Embalming Fluid or Parlement of Foules for nice occasions. Thanks in advance!

    Port Royal

I was convinced at first that I wasn't going to like this - but I ordered an imp of it anyway. Boy am I glad I did. This scent is absolutely YUMMY. I didn't get any aquatics, but I got spiced woods and a faint hint of florals and rum and salty air. This is the perfect scent for a cold, wet day when you have to go outside anyway. It's warm and comforting and so amazing that I'm actually considering buying a bottle. It smells like cuddling up to a cute, slightly tipsy guy in front of a fireplace with a hot mug of the spiced drink of your choice. The throw isn't really strong, but stays relatively close to my wrist. It's nicely long lasting, though, and at the end of my 12 hour day I can still catch some musk and spices from it.

    Dragon's Claw

In the imp, it's almost overpoweringly sweet. On, it has a good amount of throw, and starts out as pure dragon's blood. After about 30 minutes, it's progressed to an incensey scent and is hanging closer to my wrist. After about 1.5 hours, it's still hanging close to the wrist, and is pleasantly sweet and sandalwoody. Not something I need a bottle of, and not something I'll wear a lot because it's a bit too perfumey for my personal taste, but still very nice.

    Severin

In the imp - lemon. Pleasant, crisp lemon. On my wrist, wet - definitely still lemon, with a faint hint of floral sweetness in the background...almost a jasmine, but hovering on the edges. I think that the crisp edge to it might be the tea...and, you know, I could be completely off and be smelling bergamot instead of lemon. That might make a bit more sense. Quite a pleasant smell, really, just not what I was expecting it to be. Dry - I'm definitely not smelling the leather, but I think I'm getting more of the tea scent. The citrus note (whatever it is) is definitely the dominant one with the tea lurking gently in the background. Very nice, though it fades away completely in about 30 minutes or so. I have to put my nose up to my wrist to get a hint of it at all. Overall - a lovely, crisp, clean scent without a lot of throw. Something to wear if you want a brief pick-me-up of scent in the morning without smelling like it the entire day....or bring an imp and reapply throughout the day.

    Pumpkin Patch I (2005, 2006)

First impression in the imp is overwhelming fake butter, like they provide at movie theaters for you to pump over your popcorn. Ugh. Disgusting. The first time I opened it (several weeks ago), the smell made me nauseous, which is why I hadn't tried it yet despite being really curious about it. On my wrists, the butter smell (it must be what most other people smell as pumpkin, because I got the same nasty fake butter smell from Jack) thankfully goes away, and the spices come out. In fact, it smells like a spiced candle. Cinnamon is definitely softly in there, and I wouldn't be surprised if there was nutmeg and clove as well. Still, it smells like I rolled a spiced candle over my wrists. No pumpkin smell and no apple smell, either. I can understand how this one would be nice as a room scent for most people, but I wouldn't want to take my chances with the fake butter smell permeating my room. Ah well, time to continue the search for scents that smell like apple cider with mulling spices.

In the imp, amber is the overriding smell, with honey as a subtle undercurrent, and the vanilla hiding. On my skin, the amber is definitely still the predominant smell, but the vanilla makes itself more known, especially when I'm not smelling it up close. Something smells rather floral, and on the whole, the mixture is sweet and would probably give me a headache if I put too much of it on. After the first few minutes, it starts to smell like the deodorizing cakes that are put into urinals in the portapotties. After 30 minutes or so, the sweet smell that, for me, marks the urinal cakes is definitely still there, and seems to be the smell that amber takes on my skin. Thankfully, it's lost the acrid edge that really made it smell nasty, and just smells sweet. The honey is coming out a bit more, and almost seems as if there's cream or something similar mixed with it, but that might just be the vanilla. Vanilla is still lurking, but I'm catching notes of it occasionally. I slept with it on, and in the morning, it was a softer, smoky amber. A very pleasant, sweet scent, once you get past the initial stage, but not right for me.

    Bewitched

In the imp, Bewitched smells a lot like musk, and not much else. On my wrists, I got a -lot- of musk, but with hints of green tea and a brief, fresher scent. I didn't get any of the berries, maybe a little bit of the sage, and the green tea died down very quickly after the initial note. Smells rich and dark, a little bit smoky with a hint of sweetness. Almost reminds me of the bourbon vanilla soap that I used to use, or of walking into a store with all of the different scented soaps, and getting hit by a combined blast of their scents. Not a bad scent, but not a great one for me, either. Too soapy/perfumey for my taste, and smells like it belongs on a guy. Very faint hints of berries are starting to come out, but the musk is definitely the main scent on this one for me. It didn't mature much over time on my skin, either. Still the musk, taking on an acrid edge, but fully hiding any hint of berries or tea. This one definitely isn't one that I'll want to hang onto, which is a pity, because the description sounded so promising.

    Somnus

In the imp (and 5 ml bottle), this blend smells like lavender, with a sharp green component as well...I can't pick out any exact herbs, though some previous reviewers have said chamomile, that that would certainly make sense, though I don't get citrus or rose from it on my skin. The scent doesn't change at all on my skin, and is vaguely medicinal, though the lavender keeps it from being too harsh. It's not too sweet, and is a very calming, soothing blend. I usually have difficulty calming down enough to fall asleep, and it regularly takes me 30 minutes or so before I can finally sleep. This blend seems to help a little bit, and I'm hoping that as I continue using it, the scent will eventually get equated with 'sleepy', and it will become effective just because of that mental link. I wanted the scent to be obvious, so I dabbed generous amounts on my temples and wrists, which created nice wafts of the scent without being overpowering, and when I woke up in the morning, the scent was gone. End Result: I wouldn't wear it out as a perfume, but for a relaxing bedtime scent, it's definitely a keeper!
