    Zephyr

Mm. I like! I wasn't expecting to- I am not a big lemon fan, and neroli often goes Quite Wrong on me. Surprise! The drop of vanilla becomes the major note on my skin, with soft sandalwood and musk, and a hint of effervescence, which I'm thinking is the lemon- it's not lemony at all, per se, on my skin. Reminds me of Dorian actually. Definitely bottle material. For me, 4.5 out of 5- this is a truly nice blend. Especially versatile too. EDITED TO ADD: I usually write reviews without reading them first- I didn't know others had compared this to Dorian! Glad I'm not the only one smelling that similarity.

    Queen Mab

Queen Mab was my very first love from BPAL. I never ordered a large bottle and kind of forgot about her for a few years. Now, I finally got a Queen Mab frimp to retry. Surprisingly, I still love it. The black orchid is the same vanilla-like lovely creamy one from Regan, that I adore. The rose is barely present. The osmanthus is not noticeable, thank god, since I tend to find it loathesome. The jasmine is quiet and beautiful. The musk is soft and pretty. Basically this is is a creamy dark edged floral on me and I love it. I wonder if I remembered to order this in the last batch of goodies I have pending? 5 out of 5, very beautiful.

    Samhain

Samhain disappoints me. I really, really wanted it for (yes, I'm a huge dork) the label. I have the two antique repro postcards that were used on the label for this one and Trick or Treat. They're so cute! I was sooo hoping that I would at least like Samhain. No such luck. It just smells kind of smoky and spicy on me. It's a decent autumny blend, but I don't love it in any way, or even really like it. I am not sure why exactly. (Not very useful of me!) It might be the smoke, or the fruitiness I get under it. OK, it's probably the fruit. Anyway, saaddddnesss. I can't justify keeping the bottle for the label alone if I actually dislike the perfume within. Woe. For me, 2 out of 5.

    Juke Joint

Mmm. Juke Joint. How did I overlook this one? Oh yeah, cuz I am drowning in imps. The soft, lazy mint is the first thing I notice. It's not toothpasty, or cold; this is definitely a gentle, unbiting mint. A kiss of mint. The sugar is noticeable, and I love it. The bourbon note doesn't smell like bourbon to me- for some reason BPAL's boozy notes don't smell boozy to me usually... which is usually a good thing IMO! Instead it smells a wee bit smoky, a little dusty, and I totally LOVE it. Come to think of it, it is almost kind of skin musky on me. Beautiful. I absolutely MUST have a full size of this on the next looney update. This is a gorgeous light unusual blend. Nothing quite like it. I think it's the mint and sugar making me drool. It's not a bit foody though, or toothpasty as I said. Amazing. 5 out of 5.

    Chiroptera

Oh my. Dagnabbit. I am loving this one... I'd ignored it because I'm not a big floral fan, and phlox can be mega-potent on me. But oooh, Batty is verrrry nice. The herbs soften and ground the florals, and I love moonflower very much; I get a lot if it in this blend, a very moonlit scent. Nothing citrusy. It is a little sharp around the edges in a nice, herby way, though, in sort of a citrus-like fashion. But not actually citrus to me. It's fresh and uplifting. I'd put it in the same category as Ides of March; I'm coming to like green/fresh scents a lot, which is what I'd put both of those in. Delicious, and blast it all for falling in love with another (yet another!) LE, which is hard to find to boot. The Boy has also put me on a bit of BPAL restriction, so I will be cherishing my impling... For me, a 4.5 out of 5. If I didn't have Ides to pet and cherish, I would probably be cooing over this one more- but it fits the same niche, and I like it better. (And I have more of it!) EDITED TO ADD: Ah! I'd forgotten lavender was in it. That was the biggest reason I hadn't tried it. I hate lavender usually. Luckily I can't smell it at all in Chiroptera.

    Shill

Yeppers, this could get a two word review: buttered popcorn. Heavy on the butter, for sure. Hint of sweetness, yes. Makes me want popcorn. Don't really wanna smell like it. I think this may be a wonderful bath oil though. Or to mix with others, for fun. (Bliss?) I'm floored by the spot-on scent though. Perfect. The bottle ought to rattle with unpopped kernels. Anyway, for actual practical wearability, probably a 2. For perfect evocation of description, 5. And which of us BPAL nutters is that practical about stinkies? Not me, that's for sure. Fun to own, essentially. (Now where in heck did I put it...?)

    Black Orchid

Hmm. This is almost too deep and earthy- at least I'm not loving the orchid smell dirtied up. I love Regan, which is very orchid, but this one is not grabbing me yet. It's very dark smelling, very sweet, with wet dirt smell underlying all. The pure orchid in there is lovely, for sure. It's just the dirt I'm not loving, ya know? I'll play with it more- it may grow on me, ya never know. For now, it's going to have to get a 3 out of 5.

    Death Cap

Death Cap is beautimous. Oh my yes. I do have a prototype imp, so I reeeally hope it's like the released version- probably, judging by the raves! It smells dirty and sweet in the imp. On skin, the dirt becomes a hint of earthinesss, with this just... gorgeous sweet scent. It's not resiny. It's not smoky, or spicy, or fruity, or really even floral. OK, more floral than than anything else, but I'm coming up wordless in the face of the subtleties of this blend. It's grounded in the earthiness, but very sweet and wearable. I love it. I need a full size for sure. This is a great blend, I'm so thrilled it's a GC. I have an imp on the way from the Peony Moon update, so I'm excited to compare the prototype with the release version. For me, 5 out of 5. Amazing. Get some. Edited to add: There's something almost creamy about the later drydown. The floral loses it's edge, and the earthiness morphs into this yummmmmy creamy-ish deep aroma. Oh MY yes. Can't wait til I can slather properly. Glad that moment won't be too far away! Edited again: I think there's something in my skin chemistry turning florals creamy lately. I reread several reviews of the latest scents and I keep getting creamy notes where there are none- weird, but I'll take it!

    Brimstone

This scent is major. It is not girly, not fluffy, not even friendly. It's fully hardcore. I think I could scare people with this smell. It isn't just smoke to me. It's kind of... sharper. There's something metallic and pointy in there. This is what one might expect Nuclear Winter to smell like (though it doesn't, not at all). It's very stark, deadly, and menacing. Menacing has been mentioned repeatedly in this thread, and for good reason. Brimstone embodies the scent of menace to me. I'm amazed Beth created something that causes such a visceral reaction- it really does. That being said, it is so very, very not me. I also think I can almost taste it, just the dab I put on, and it has GOT to come off. Now. Anyway, for an evocative scent that lives up to it's name, 5 out of 5; for actual wearability on me, a 1. Still, try it if it comes your way. It's worth it for the experience, for sure. (And who knows, you may have someone you need to intimidate, and I think this might just be the ticket!)

    Cthulhu

Not bad, but not terribly thrilling. This one was a simple aquatic on me, some ozone, that's about it. Rather masculine. I prefer Storm Moon, the lunar oils make ozone and aquatic more tasty for me. 3 out of 5.

    Tulzscha

Hi. I'm a dork. I initially didn't much like Tulzscha. Then I revisited my impling over the summer, after realizing that I do adore mint, and the mintier the better, especially when my stupid apartment is a million degrees in the summer (most of the time, that is). And I was bowled over. I adore it! I have no clue what it was that made me bored with this blend initially. The cucumber is crisp and gorgeous. The mint is cool and serene. White pepper? Not really. But mint and cucumber are amazing together. This reminds me of Frost Moon and Blue Moon- I get the same crispness from them. Lick It is the sweet & creamy perfect mint, this is the ideal savory/crisp mint. Awesome in the summer, just perfect. 5 out of 5.

    Whippoorwill

I didn't expect to like Whippoorwill. It just sounded unpleasant. I got an imp in a lot, and was very pleasantly surprised by it's user-friendliness. The bamboo is the major note on me, definitely, and I'm a big fan of, so yay. No pepper so far, though it may be teaming with the cardamom for a hint of underlying spice. Probably oakmoss, which I'm not 100% sure what it smells like, but I'm guessing it's the sort of herbal undertone. There's some spiciness from the cardamom too. All around very very nice, a big surprise from SiA. It does feel like a shadowy green place to me- definitely deep and green and dark. Very much like being in the woods on a cool, cloudy day. I think this is the best BPAL bamboo scent for me so far- I like Holiday Moon a lot, but I like Whippoorwill best. For me, this is a big winner. I like to have some less aggressive perfumes I can wear, and this is one that I can wear and not feel like my Snake Charmer is announcing itself to everyone nearby, you know? So yeah. 5 out of 5, and I'm thrilled to have found a bottle.

    Velvet

Holy hells, this is evilly good! It is one of those fun BPALs that has a throw that is enticing, enchanting, and different than the scent you get when you plaster your nose up against it (both are delish but different). The chocolate aspect is smooth and amazing, I love Beth's chocolate note. The sandalwood and myrrh actually go really well with the chocolate which surprises me. I wouldn't have expected them to go well together. The vanilla is noticeable, and another favorite note. I'm thinking this is going on the bottle list, it's really quite unusual and lovely. Sexy too. 5 out of 5. ADDED Nov. 4: Velvet was one I kept trying, rejecting, and then trying again praying it would work. Sometimes with patience my nose will accept things I first thought off-putting. And Velvet sounds SO GOOD. I got one of the wounded imps from the lab of Velvet- y'know, open it and the head pops off. So I left it upright in my jewelry box and forgot about it. Weeks later, I tried it again and OHMIGOD. It's just the way I always wanted it to smell! I guess I'd only tried lab fresh before, because now the scents have mellowed, deepened and become amazing. I lucked into an older bottle now too, so I can have me some aged Velvet in a more practical vessel than a headless imp. The chocolate is deep and dark, the sandalwood is a really nice one- it tends to come to the forefront on my skin, but I amp chocolate too, so together they're Teh Yum. Myrrh is mellower, but still there. All in all it's damn good. I think when it's fresh, there's less depth and the notes clash a bit. Older, it's amazing- smooth and deep, and sexy too. And not terribly foody either. 5 out of 5.

    The Living Flame

I took a risk and got a bottle of this unsniffed. Risky, but I got really lucky. I like Living Flame a lot. Especially the drydown. Initially it's a warm floral, very well blended and almost like a commercial perfume. Then, it dries. Ohmigod, it's amazing. This delicious warm sweet creamy smell comes out behind the flowers, and then pushes them far, far back. Gotta be vanilla and musk creating that amazing smell. It takes about 20 minutes to get there, but oh, it is worth waiting for. The floral intial smell is nice, and interesting in that it is definitely a warm aroma not cold like florals can be, but it's the drydown that delights me. I want to put this on, along with my sexy little black dress, with some serious lingerie beneath, and have my husband take me out for cocktails somewhere swanky at one of the "see and be seen" places around town. (And then let him discover the lingerie later!) Hot stuff. 4.5 out of 5.

    Black Lily

Wow, this is a gorgeous lily. It is very creamy on me- this wonderful lily aroma floating all around with a cream base. It definitely is dark though, and doesn't go powdery on me. Oh man, beautiful. Hopefully Beth releases this beast soon, I'm definitely in line for a bottle. It smells purple-black to me. 5 out of 5.
  16. LittleGreyKitten

    Toxin

Oh my. My my my. This is flipping AMAZING. It reminds me a lot of Frost Moon, though it's not minty. It has this lovely sort of icy herbal, sort of aquatic, very moonlit and subtle aroma. Please release this baby, Beth! I have to have more. It is very refreshing and crisp, and I'll definitely treasure the impling I have. 5 out of 5.

    Nihil

This reminds me a lot of Zero. It's another very straight-up floral, which is nicely executed but not terribly *me*. I find this a little more ozone/aquatic than Zero, but still mostly floral. It does smell more commercial than some BPAL blends, and more "perfumey". Still, it dries down nicely as does Zero. Glad I got to try, but an imp is probably not even necessary for me. 3.5 out of 5.
  18. LittleGreyKitten

    Zero

This smells like straight white floral to me- very clear & crystalline, piercingly sweet. Not faint on me- rather strong. Nothing fuzzing the scent up. It smells haughty and unapproachable, very Ice Princess. It isn't headache inducing or wrong smelling or anything- no, for what it is, it's nice. It isn't very me though. Glad I got to try it though, fun to sneak a peek at what Beth is up to. 3.5 out of 5, for nice execution, though it isn't terribly useful for me.

    Anubis

The description of Anubis never grabbed me; either I didn't know what the notes would smell like (balsam, storax, embalming herbs) or I was very hit or miss with the note (myrrh). So I really hadn't given Anubis much thought one way or the other. However, if there is anything that's true about BPAL, it's that one will definitely find notes that are new and intriguing, or you'll change your mind about things you never thought would work on you. So, I got frimped with Anubis. In the bottle I was taken aback a bit- spicy, sharp, with a golden tone to it that promised to be intriguing or terrible on skin. On skin, it blooms. Wet it's nice, a bit sharp still, but then dry the beautiful golden sweet scent takes over and pushes the sharper bits (herbs?) back some. I don't know what that sweet note is- it's sort of honey, kind of like when ylang ylang goes very right on me, a little like the sweet note in Haunted Palace, but not exactly like any of those. It's just bright, sweet, clear and golden. I will try it a few more times before I declare my need for a bottle, but I'm thinking it's likely. I just want to make sure it doesn't become cloying; I feel like it does have that possibility. 4 out of 5.

    R'lyeh

This one surprised me with it's sweetness. There's a hint of aquatic to it but not a lot, and also a deeper scent of incense, which reminds me a bit of the undertone to some of the Springtime in Arkham scents (Whippoorwill and Al-Azif come to mind). No grapefruit for me, sadly. As it dries the aquatic dissipates quickly, leaving a sweet, dark incense aroma on me. I'm rather liking it, but I have a lot of sweet incense blends, so I am not in love. Still, this one is pleasantly lower-key than some- incense is one that amps like whoa on me and can easily waft far and wide, up to 20 feet (!! yikes) away from me. So this one is at least staying near me- that's nice. Yeah. The more I smell this the more it relates to the SiA set, and I'm thinking Whippoorwill in particular, but I'll have to sniff and see for sure later. I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5, which might be a little stingy- I'm just feeling kind of burnt out on incense blends I guess.

    Gingerbread Poppet

I kind of hate gingerbread. I didn't test my lonely imp of this for a really long time, just because "Eh, gingerbread" kept going through my mind whenever I'd look at it. Then it occured to me the other day that I'd not actually PUT IT ON. I should know by now how silly that is with BPALs, even if I did hate Shub Niggurath, the epitome of gingery goodness apparently. So anyway, I did put some Poppet on, and I actually quite like it. It is spot-on good quality gingerbread, the lovely aroma of it baking. Guess I like the smell not the flavor, which makes some sense thinking about it- I do think I've drooled over the smell but then not liked the taste, several times. Spice, butter, vanilla and sweet ginger, it's very yummy on. I don't find the spices overwhelming or artificial; I definitely don't get "candle" (or fake) from this- it smells very real and good. I do have a fetish for BPAL's foody scents, so it's no wonder I like this. I often pour Sugar Cookie on myself like crazy. I will have to get me a bottle of this tasty little treat after all. I'm glad it doesn't go off on me. The more foody scents the merrier! 5 out of 5.

    The Star

I really enjoyed The Star. On me, there was a fresh burst of sweet creamy lime, with a hint of coconut beneath, and that yummy foody scent that I love so much in Spooky. While it shares that base vanilla-y yum scent with Spooky, I don't find it to be that much *like* Spooky; the coconut and strong lime definitely make it different. I will definitely be getting a bottle of this! Delicious. The coconut isn't suntan-lotiony (actually I love all BPAL's coconut I've smelled that I can think of, very wearable). The lime is sweet and effervescent. The base note is just meltingly good. Unique too. 5 out of 5.

    Undertow

This is a truly unique, nifty scent. Thumbs way up from the boy factor too, who has become quite jaded and rarely says much anymore when I stick my oiled wrist under his nose. Yes, minty goodness. A hint of the juniper, which surprisingly is nice. And some unusual tang under all. Sort of... apple? Tart apple? Anyway, it's unusual and very nice. Soft and unassuming on me. While it isn't one that's knocked my socks totally off, I do find it quite pleasant and may well bottle after I finish the imp. For me, a 4 out of 5.

    Vechernyaya

This is the only one of the Zoryas that grabbed me. Indeed, though, it made up for the other two with it's amazing deliciousness. I love anything with poppy, and the musks were divine. Deep, warm, sexy. Yes! Big bottle ordered, check. For me, 4.5 out of 5.

    Bastet

Hi. I'm stooopid. I realize that Bastet I never gave a fair chance to. Yes, I tried it on skin, but I didn't *leave it* on my skin. It smelled like Death By Almonds, I said bah, and washed it off still wet. Yes, I'm dumb. So I retried it finally... and let it dry. OHGOD. The almonds disappear, halleluja! This amazing golden, warm, almost creamysweet scent takes over. It's musky, spicy, yet not dark or deep. It feels playful and sexy, not overwhelmingly potent or in-your-face. The scent it throws is just gorgeous. Up close it's also really, really great, but the throw, oh man. It's beautiful. Here, kitty kitty. Getting a full size STAT. 5 out of 5, woohoo!
