    Monster Bait: Underpants

I'm trying this hard-to-find beauty courtesy of my switch witch from the autumn round, the very generous and charming catsoap Sandalwood is one of my all-time favourite notes and this doesn't disappoint; it's strong, smooth, dry, and sultry. A little bit of sugar sparkles around the edges and there's a touch (just a light touch) of butterscotch-like sweetness. Woodsy and sweet and very relaxing and sexy. I can see why everyone goes nuts for this one

    Czernobog

It's a foresty scent, who knew?! (OK, everyone knew who read the reviews and not just the description, like I did.) The initial scent of this when wet is something sharp, like juniper berry, layered over musk and civet. I'm one of the lucky ones who can wear civet, so on me the musks come off smelling dark, smooth, and sexy. No eau de loo here My only issue with this is that the forest element of the scent (what I think smells like juniper; could it be mullein?) does veer slightly towards bathroom cleaner, same as shelldoo said I definitely want to keep my imp though. This would be an interesting scent to compare with Black Forest.

    Yew-Trees

There's something really weird going on here. I've tried a number of forest scents from BPAL and this just doesn't smell like any of them. I don't really detect pine or berries; what I'm mostly getting is.... .......antifreeze? Or maybe it's the pineapple and coconuts that Jishin mentioned. It's sweet and weirdly fake and plasticky smelling. I guess this does not constitute a success. Oh well, win some, lose some.

    Priala, the Human Phoenix (2006)

Mmm. Ohhh. Ahhh. Guh. Sexy stuff, this. The blend of myrrhs is incredibly thick and sweet and gives this a very womanly feeling. The cinnamon seems light and dry to me, and it's not burning my skin at all (bonus!). And hanging over it all is a smoky haze that makes me think of bonfires. I absolutely adore this blend.

    The Spell of Amorous Love

When freshly applied the strongest note on my wrist is the red currant, tart and fruity and quite pleasant. It lasts all of about 15 minutes on me though! So I can't say anything more about it beyond that initial stage. Someone will probably be happy to swap for it though

    Pride

The rose in this blend is overpowering the narcissus - and sadly, it seems to be of a variety that smells faintly bitter on me. It's lovely in the imp but will have to find another home.

    Fallen

The most dominant notes in this blend for me are violet and woods. The vetiver stays pretty quiet.

    Azathoth

Oh man, this was a towering pile of fail on me. No citrus, no saffron, no cedarwood, no recognisable notes at all besides burning tires. To be fair, it is highly evocative in that I probably would go mad if I smelled like this all the time!

    Sed Non Satiata

Wow, despite the complete lack of chocolate in this blend, there is something chocolate-like about it! It's incredibly rich and sweet and just a bit dark and thick. I can smell mainly cognac, honey, tuberose, and musk. Red patchouli doesn't seem to be coming out too strongly. The cognac note has a slightly bitter alcoholic tang when wet but that bitterness fades very quickly as it dries. Reminds me a little of a deeper and sexier version of La Petit Mort.

    Shadow Witch Orchid

Soft and pretty, and just a little bit fruity. This has a mysterious, twilight vibe to it.

    Severin

At first there's a burst of bergamot, quickly followed by smooth warm leather. Kind of a strange combo. I enjoy the Earl Grey in this but it's a very light scent. Theodosius was similar - couldn't quite get a strong enough whiff! Looks like I'll have to stick with Dorian for my sexy man-tea scent. (oh dear...)

The Passionate Shepherd To His Love

Wet: green grass! But not a cool, damp scent; this is more like sunlight on a freshly-mown lawn. As it dries, the florals become more noticeable, especially the clover, but the grass stays strong. The final drydown is warm, grassy clover. I think I like Her Voice better... but only slightly. Very nice!

    Swan Maiden

This seems to be quite a popular blend... not for me though! I wish I got more of the muguet and sandalwood from this, but from the moment it touches my wrist it's scary GARDENIA of doom. I do enjoy the smell of gardenias, but like it better in Ecstacy of St Theresa. Here, with all the other florals singing backup, it's just terrifyingly strong. My mom says I smell like a funeral home. Someone will be happy to have this in a swap, I'm sure!

    Her Voice

Heavens, this isn't nearly as sweet as I thought it would be! Very interesting. In the bottle, I can see the comparisons to Rose Red for the green stems and Poisson d'Avril for the damp flowers. On my skin this becomes much less light, however. After about 15 minutes I've got a dusty honey scent combined with slightly woody green stems. It has a very wild and natural feel to it. I think the lilies are strongest, followed by the carnation. Not your run-of-the-mill floral and it won't be to everyone's taste, but I feel it has a weirdly beautiful and slightly untouchable quality. A feral wood nymph would smell like this. Not what I expected from the listed notes but it suits me.

    Nocnitsa

To confirm what others have already stated: yes, this is a very *wet* scent. I can smell fir trees but the earthy scent is much stronger, and it's very dark and damp. Nocnitsa won't be replacing Black Forest as my favourite pine scent, but I will be using my imp on days like today when it's just on the edge of storming and it feels right.

    Mouse's Long and Sad Tale

A good soft, sweet vanilla that's neither too foody nor too perfumey. Amber can be a little sharp on me but it's not in this blend... and sweet pea can be rather intrusive, but it's not in this blend.

    Nero

Wow, I *really* like Nero. At first the rosemary and lemon are sharp and kind of astringent-smelling, but when it dries the pine and bay are just wonderful, a green and spicy, almost Christmassy scent. The rosemary adds just a touch of bitterness to keep it stern and cruel, not exactly a comfort scent. I like it a lot and will probably be getting a large bottle.
  18. CrazyPretzel

    Marie

Yes, it is exactly as described: at first it's sweet, elegant tea rose, and as it dries the violets become quite thick and heady.

    Tanuki

Light, fruity, and happy. At first this reminds me of Fire Pig but with more of a floral vibe - it smells a little like lychee or tangerine. The pine isn't really discernible as such but lends a bit of a damp green feel to it. This fades away gently instead of turning a little bit bitter as Fire Pig can do in the far drydown. It's pretty and appealing but I'm not quite as crazy about it as I thought I would be.

    Love Me

The one note that I'm fairly sure of here is cinnamon... but it's not overwhelmingly strong, although it is pretty spicy, and it's not made my skin even the slightest bit red (Harlot and Tanin'iver make me come up in actual welts, so this is a concern!). There are sweet ingredients backing this up: at first I thought jasmine, but now that it's been dry for an hour I'm guessing vanilla? It's neither strongly floral nor foody, just sweet with spicy cinnamon laid over the top. No men around here to test the hoodoo on, but certainly it smells pretty attractive to me!
  21. CrazyPretzel

    Green Phoenix

On me this is like the herby bits of Allison Gross without the sweetness of the flowers and dragon's blood. Grassy but not too sharp. It's a little bit 'meh' and I think I might have to try it on another day...

    Meskhenet, the Vulture Maiden

I am not a big fan of iris or orris root, but I can't detect the orris in this blend. What I do smell is frankincense combined with a dry but gentle herbal scent. This is a resinous scent that's not too sweet; very calming and beautiful.

    Kumiho

LOVE! This is not a strong, sharp, medicinal ginger like the one I got in Sudha Segara. This is pure, clean, almost-like-lemon-but-more-delicate, and utterly lovely. I need a bottle, stat.

    Vampire Tears

At first I thought I was smelling lemon as well, but after comparing with Kumiho I recognise the initial tart citrus scent as white ginger combined with grapefruit. For the first hour or so this has a really lovely throw on me; a really pretty sweet white floral dusted with lemon sugar. After that it goes through a strong iris stage - sadly I am not the biggest fan of iris - but after 30 minutes or so of iris-palooza it settles down to a comfortable green tea 'n jasmine scent that stays close to my wrist. A major morpher and I predict it will grow on me.
