I wish that I had some glorious insight and advice, but all I can suggest is to talk about this with Z and be as honest and open about it all amongst the two of you as you can. If nothing else, you can lean on each other for support while dealing with this situation.
Neither of you can change how his family feels, but hopefully time can make them see how truly happy you both are and how perfect you are for their son (in every way). I am so sad that they've put you in this position, and that it's putting a damper on the joy of your engagement.
