  1. I have been letting this one rest for weeks.

This is one of those sharp, strong, raspy red rose scents. Nothing soft here. And it is a spicy strong edgy rose.

I will hold on to this for a while in hopes the patchouli, labdanum and/or vanilla are detectable at all at some point. My hopes are not high.

After 45 minutes the rose does soften a bit and I can smell the labdanum. Cool.

Eta: testing again after about a month, there is nothing but burn your nose rose, a hint of labdanum and something sour underneath. I guess I didn't earn a heart. Maybe someone else will enjoy this bottle but I certainly am not. I guess pepperberry can join cumin in the avoided notes club.

  2. After the 'strong coffee!' accolades here, I figured I would pull this one out of rest mode to test it. Very weak apple spiced coffee? Creamy, a bit of caramel and sweetness but nothing that grabs my attention or wows me. If I have to try to enjoy a scent or try to find the notes in an oil, I feel like I'm working for something that should just be obvious enjoyment. Not impressed.

  3. Disappointing. I bobbed for a smutty apple and came up with some bland apple laundry goo. There's no Smut in that barrel...maybe it will become more smutty with some age.

After 30 minutes, there is a slight sweet afterwave of smut, like I had put Smut on 6 hours ago and am randomly smelling hints of it. I like to be smacked around by Smut so I was expecting Smutty Apples not the memory of smut and apple dryer sheets. Still debating letting it age...

  4. I wouldn't say clove 'tinged', but more clove hinged. There is a lot of clove here!

I can smell dragon's blood (the resiny one, not the fruity Ars Draconis one), clove and pine pitch and all three seem pretty well balanced on my skin. It took about 20 minutes for the clove to calm down. There's a witchy scent that this reminds me of but I can't remember the name. I would say this is not a unique scent, nothing new here, but it was for a heck of a cause and it does smell nice.

  5. Whoa. Well, wow.

I can see why people are mentioning 'funk' however, I love scents like It Wasn't Just a Phase and Dark Rosaleen, so I know this 'funk' will smooth out in a few months. I watched the reviews and let this sit for a few weeks before testing.

This scent screams Autumn for me, which is extremely comforting.

Honestly, I'm not sure what I smell apart from agarwood, tonka and amber but I love it. I'm glad to have a bottle and I bet that the notes will be easier to find after a year, if my bottle lasts that long. My only gripe is that my bottle was filled to just above the top of the label, which I was surprised to see. This seems to be happening more often lately.

Eta - 30 minutes on my skin this is morphing into such a beautiful, slightly sweet (almost floral but not!) scent and the amber/golden thread/agarwood has almost disappeared. I almost forgot which scent I had on! I am not familiar with Black Silk but this makes me wish that I was...I bet the red lotus (never heard of red lotus before!) is doing something magical but again, I'm not familiar with it. Barely any throw for such a statement piece, and stays close to the skin!

  6. I received a free bottle of this with a hefty order in the past and am really very grateful as I wasn't interested in it at the time.

Definitely moss with an aquatic/salty lift, dirt (I swear there's a bit of a super dry patchouli in here), and a hint of floral which I am guessing is a lily. Zombie didn't work on me (I'm guessing the rose/moss was too much) but this is quite lovely. It definitely has a mood - and I am glad to have this generously gifted bottle to wear when I find myself in that mood.

ETA Deep in Earth is the other 'similar' scent I've tried, and while I know I liked it better than Zombie, I can't remember it well enough to compare with this.

  7. I have been wearing this quite often since it was offered, and today the orange, lychee, kumquat and cypress are most prominent, which I love. It's such a bright perfume to help cut through the fog of this years' doom and gloom. One of my favorites...morphs often!

An hour later I smell the pine and peony and this particular wear is truly lovely.

  8. Magnolia, white musk and that juniper mist! Whoa. Very ephemeral. Very light, too. This was the one I was most looking forward to and I can't wait to see how it ages. BPALs seem to come into their own after about a year and I am looking forward to wearing this one in late spring, as that is where my nose is telling me it belongs.

  9. This smells wonderful. Spiced apples, creamy pumpkin and something sweet rounding it out. I usually don't have problems with spices but these left welts on my wrists, fwiw.

Tested again today and the burning was much less than the other day. It smells delicious.

  10. My 2021 bottles smell like a lightly spiced and toasted pumpkin and wonderfully creamy sandalwood.

My 2022 bottle smells like Pumpkin Spice Latte '10. I also got a bottle of Pumpkin Spice Latte '22 and it smells like last year's Every Day is Halloween. I suspect a mis bottling switcheroo episode. Glad I ordered both.

I'm writing this in case anyone else gets extreme spice from their bottle this year- it may indeed be Pumpkin Spice Latte instead.

  11. Wow. I cannot believe how much this smells like a chocolate glazed donut. 😯 Unreal. For hours. I love maple but am not smelling any from my bottle. This would be a scent that it would be fun to collect the variations! This is lovely. Thank goodness there's no coconut in mine because I cannot stand coconut scents.

  12. 2022

I love this so much. It is complex but so well blended, I had so much fun smelling my wrists trying to smell everything (which I could!). This could be my favorite Halloweenie. If you like the listed notes, I don't see how you could go wrong with this. My only gripe is that my bottle was only filled to just barely above the top of the label, which is so rare.

  13. Mother of Cats, why didn't I get two bottles of this?!

All notes present with the juicy cherry disappearing/melding ten minutes on my skin. I absolutely love this - so dark, so resinous and not overpowering. I was scared when I smelled this in the bottle - that cherry was fierce!!!

Ooohhhh...the black currant, black musk and tobacco are fantastic together!!! Wow!

  14. This bottle just arrived today but I wanted to say how much I love it. It is so unique - I have nothing like it in my collection - and smells like a creamy, sugary, non fruity cereal in the best way possible. Lovely.

    Cap'n Crunch!!!

  15. In the bottle it is very very fig. BIG FIG.

On the skin, it morphs into a crazy beautifully soft fig mooshed into vanilla woods. After a few minutes I smell a touch of patchouli. This bottle just arrived but it already smells amazing. I'm looking forward to smelling how it ages!

    Eta 01 December '22

I still love this. It has become a papery fig, if that makes any sense.

    Eta 10 Feb 2024

This has smoothed out and that big fig has mellowed out big time. This is one that I get frustrated by the listed notes...aside from the patchouli, I just can't find them. I prefer Grief Moth 2 but this is a lovely papery fig patchouli.

Eta 19 Feb 2024 I get the feeling this will come into its own in another year or so. I'm wearing both Grief Moths this morning and actually just love them both, and they smell so good in proximity to each other. Just lovely.
