    Shoggoth

This one is truly weird. It starts off smelling like classic Raid, minty- nasty bug spray, and then sweet tropical fruit cocktail (canned, not fresh), then a nice, soft dry down smelling like sugar cookies and a tiny bit of coconut. It smells like almost everything you could think of. Very complicated. I got no lime, though. This isn't pleasing to me until several hours have passed. ( It's pretty long-lasting, by the way.) 3 1/2 stars out of 5, mostly for originality. Worth a try.

    Vechernyaya

Vechernyaya is a clean, very slightly sweet, white musk with a touch of something smoky (probably the patchouli) and a touch of something that smells like black pepper (the poppy?) So , anyway, it smells good. Very good. It's what I wish more Black Phoenix oils were like: different but not peculiar, soft but lasting, not perfumey but sort of herbal/earthy/dusty. Interesting. I could definitely advise this as an "enabling" scent for beginners. It should be great for everyone EXCEPT those who prefer super-sweet or heavily floral scents. 4 1/2 stars out of 5. It could work for men or women.

    Machu Picchu

Tropical fruits and flowers, yes, but mostly a strange sugary mint scent, like sweet mint candy. And there's a wetness and greenness, too. But the mint candy scent is by far the strongest and most lasting aspect of this oil. It's got a short wear length and low-medium throw. It's ok, not bad or great, 2 1/2 stars out of 5. I do like the wetness, though. Interesting!

    Eden

I had high hopes for this one, but they came to naught. Just cheap-smelling, plasticky-fake coconut and almond with the tiniest hint of green fig. It wasn't beautiful and it sure wasn't paradise. 1 1/2 stars out of 5. Disappointing.

    Laudanum

Someone said this smells like coal tar soap. Yes, that's it! Coal tar soap with a touch of sickly sweetness and a layer of medicinal bitterness. It's mostly bitter and medicinal on my skin. I don't think so. 2 stars out of 5, feeling generous. Not the bottom of the barrel, but far from the best. Might work well on a Gothic junkie?

    Thy Godfather's Present

This is a new favorite of mine. It is herbal, but not green: definitely purple. Slightly minty, slightly sweet, with a touch of licorice, dusty and soft rather than fresh or grassy. Aged, dried, but not really dead. It is intriguing, but not too weird. Although the scent isn't strong, it sticks around and wafts quite a bit. Yep, I really like it. 4 1/2 out of 5 stars. Let it grow on you. It may not be exciting at first, but it keeps you coming back for more.
  7. The longest wear and greatest throw: Haunted. Haunted. Haunted. Also super-strong are: Tombstone, definitely. Satyr, but it's all cinnamon all the time. Bathsheba smells great & throws. the Antikythera Mechanism, Snake Oil, Ekhidna, Wanda, Perversion. Dorian is subtle but very lasting. Brusque Violet is a softer scent, too, but it wafts a lot more than many others. Baba Yaga is long-lasting and wafts, also Thy Godfather's Present. Anne Bonny has lots of sillage and lasts forever, but smells like sawdust and cedar chips on me. The aquatic, clean scents have much better sillage and wear length than I could have ever dreamed.

    Somnus

The smell of Somnus is the smell of lavender absolute - plain old 100% lavender oil. Jasmine? No. Lemon? Uh-uh. Rose? You've got to be joking. I have a little bottle of lavender absolute that I got from a local lavender farm. That oil and Somnus are identical. It didn't seem to help me sleep, but I woke up the next day with a stuffy nose and a headache. I won't be buying this again, but I may try another Somnium blend.

    Eve

The first few minutes were beautiful. I don't like BPAL florals in general, but this was perfect. And then, five minutes later, it all turned to soapy rose and thick, overwhelming honey. I think I must have been loving the apple blossom especially, but now it's all gone. 5 star opening, 1 star finish. If BPAL rose works for you, you will probably like this. Lots of staying power and sillage for my least favorite notes.

    Hecate

All almond all the time. Almond doesn't seem to suit me. 1 star out of 5. I wish I smelled myrrh or smoke, but no, just almond.

    Y'ha-nthlei

Eucalyptus! Eucalyptus! My God, MORE eucalyptus. Smells like menthol cough drops and Old Spice Lime. Manly. Older manly. Not really my thing, although it is refreshing/cooling and I love the fake ambergris (unfortunately, mostly drowned out by the EUCALYPTUS.) Eh. 2 stars out of 5.

    Brown Jenkin

Brown Jenkin is the only coconut scent I have been able to wear from BPAL. It is a warm, lightly sweet scent which does remind me somehow of a light shade of brown. It seems halfway between vanilla and chocolate. Really a nice scent...4 out of 5 stars. Decent wearlength and throw. It's a skin scent with a foody-sweet note in there somewhere.

    Gaueko

If scent had a color, this would be faded black or charcoal gray with a tinge of lavender. Dark, smoky, kind of gritty or even dirty. It is kind of masculine. I like smelling it a lot, but not so much on my body. Room scent? 3 out of 5 stars.

    Aizen-Myoo

Cherry-infused green tea. Very light scent. Pretty enough, but doesn't last and has low sillage. Best described as "nice" or "pleasant". 2 out of 5 stars. Just ok.
  15. INFJ4w3

    Ehecatl

Sugared lime juice with a little cool white musk. Neither terrible nor great. Subtle, fresh scent. Definitely a hot weather scent - it is refreshing. But still...doesn't move me. 2 stars out of 5 = meh.
  16. INFJ4w3

    Aglaea

Three golden ambers, bright musk, peach wine and myrtle. Peach jam. Nothing else. Very sweet and boring. 11/2 stars out of 5.
  17. INFJ4w3

    Aremata-Popoa

Yuck...blackberry jam and honey, sickeningly sweet, with a bitter undertone. Cloying and strong. I had high hopes for this one, which are all dashed now. 1 star out of 5. I feel like I just crawled out of a giant jelly jar.

    Ekhidna

I love this scent! It is so complex that it is difficult to describe: spicy, aquatic, incense-y, dark, exotic, warm, different. It's got a little something for everyone, but it doesn't smell like anything else. 5 stars.

    O

Smelled better in the imp than on me. For some reason, I smell toasted coconut as soon as it hits my skin. Lots of honey. My skin seems to amp the hell out of honey. It's a nice enough scent, but a little too sweet. If you like baking-cookies type scents, you'll love this. 3 3/4 out of 5 stars.
  20. INFJ4w3

    Bathsheba

Spicy plum with sexy musk. Similar to Mme. Moriarty, Misfortune Teller, but without the vanilla note. I like to layer these two together. But, really, they're almost twins. I love both: 5 stars!
  21. INFJ4w3

    Aperotos Eros

Pine and dark incense. Smells like deep forest green. My SO likes it on me. I would like it a lot more with less (or no) piney note. It smells like someone had a wild party with lots of sex and drugs, then tried to clean the whole thing up with Pinesol the next morning. But the Pinesol made them gag, so they lit up their favorite spicy-woody incense. 3 1/2 stars out of 5.
  22. INFJ4w3

    Tushnamatay

Tushnamatay smells like vanilla marshmallow powder with a tiny touch of sandalwood or cedar. It's something I would normally love, but it is so soft and weak that I can barely sniff it, even in the imp. Once I put it on, even slathered like crazy, it is barely noticeable. Low on sillage and staying power. I'll give it 3 3/4 out of 5. Seems girly to me, pretty and somehow "fluffy".
  23. INFJ4w3

    Marie

I wanted this one to work sooooo badly...because I love a discontinued fragrance called Volcan d'Amour which is heavy violet/rose. But most BPAL flowers don't seem to like me. The rose is the culprit here: I sneezed loudly upon application. The scent has little or no sillage, moderate staying power. It's a soft, sort of powdery scent. I wish it was a lot more violet and a lot less rose. I might try layering this with Brusque Violet, the only BPAL violet to work for me yet. I could see how Marie would be great on someone with different chemistry. 2 1/2 to 3 stars out of 5.

    Hollywood Babylon

Sweet. Yes, it's candy-sweet. Cherry candy, strawberry candy and light vanilla. It's a soft, close-to-skin scent on me. It's not bad, by any means, but not for me. Very, very girlie. Young girlie, mostly. It's not terrible. 3 stars out of 5.
  25. INFJ4w3

    Shango

45% red apple, 45% banana, 5% sugar, 5% spice (chili!) No staying power, no sillage. Poof! Put it on, then it's gone! One good thing: the fruit smells amazingly fresh and real. Nice for summer, beach-y, daytime scent. 2 out of 5 stars. Your basic "meh".
