As a fellow gardener ignorant of your climate, might I recommend purple cone flower, also known as echinacea? I planted just two last year for the fun of it, and this year they've come up by the dozens. They re-seed themselves, are pretty much impervious to most pests, and very tolerant of neglect and drought. They just don't like for their feet to stay wet.
I used to have a black thumb, too. Experience and experiments will turn it green in no time. Best of luck!
