  1. Huey Tecuilhuitl, the Great Festival of Lords, occurs on the 8th month of the 260-day Mexica sacred calendar of Tonalpualli. This festival honors Chicomecoatl, also known as Xilonen, the Goddess of Nourishment and Plenty, Seven Snakes. She represents the female aspect of corn, and she is the counterpart of Centeotl, -- the female sheath to his phallic cob. The celebration of the Feast assured the return of the rains and a good corn harvest. Cacao mixed with ground maize, agave wine, and octli, mixed with herbs and spices native to central Mexico. Sorry if I made any mistakes, this is my first scent thread. In the bottle: Definitely smells foody to me. There is something starchy and sweet in there, sort of like a fried plantain or tamale in a mole sauce. Wet: Ohhh, spicy! Good cocoa with lots of spices. Nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, and maybe some chili notes show up. Not very sweet at this point. Dry: Pretty much dries down to pure cinnamon, but it's a very vibrant, spicy cinnamon. Overall, this one is definitely unique, and definitely a keeper. Not a great deal of throw on me, but if I get in close, it oozes character.

When your favorite GC blends are discontinued

Iago isn't quite bold enough for my tastes, at least not on me. Black Rider seems like it might do the trick though, if the sweetness doesn't turn me off. Thanks.

When your favorite GC blends are discontinued

There was some discussion about this awhile back, but are there any more recommendations to replace De Sade? I think I've tried most of the impable options in that neighborhood,I was thinking about picking up a bottle of Captain Cully and Violens. I tend to like the rather masculine scents (on account of me being a masculine person, well, to some degree) Fenris, Bluebeard, Tezcat, Velvet Dogs, and Dead Man's Hand are probably my favorite scents aside from De Sade. In terms of notes I like tobacco, leather, coffee, vetiver, chocolate, and anything boozy. De Sade is a very dark and heavy smelling leather, which is what I'm really missing, the clean suede notes are nice, but they lack the punch that De Sade had.

    Centzon Totochtin

Not much to say about this one. I was really looking forward to trying this, and I probably would have gotten a bottle if I had gotten an imp earlier, but I got a bottle of Velvet Dogs Playing Poker with my last order and this smells really similar on my skin. I get coffee and cocoa early on, but just about 10 minutes in it dies down to a woody, smoky, unsweetened coffee smell, which is the same as what Dogs does. I guess if that ever becomes scarce, I can switch over to Centzon, but so long as I still have some, I really don't see a reason to get any more of this.

    Advice on Gaiman scents please

Have you considered getting an imp pack from the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund? That's what I did, and it's a good way to check out a wide variety without having to buy the big bottles. As for what is good, I'm not sure I can help you much as my standards are probably very different. I would definitely recommend Bilquis, lovely comfortable scent, not unwearable, but interesting enough to make it stand out from the rest of your collection. My other favorite is Mad Sweeney, which you'll definitely want to avoid, I can't imagine anyone but me wanting to wear that out, and you probably wouldn't even enjoy it. Mama-Ji is one that everyone should at least try, very nice and bold. Of the rest, the only one that I could perhaps recommend is Mr. Nancy. Though, I have not tried anything from outside what is offered in the imp pack, so I cannot speak for anything else. Not certain my picks will be any help, those are just what I like, and I'm not good at figuring out what will work on other people. I'd recommend just being adventurous, and getting the imp pack if possible, so you can be adventurous for as little money as possible.

    Velvet Bandito

I didn't get anything dusty or smoky with this unfortunately. I ended up smelling like a gingerbread cookie. Not a very sweet one, though. Overall, it is quite a pleasant smell, but it's just not me.
  7. I need a bottle of Dead Man's Hand. Unfortunately, that is a near impossibility. The only similar scent I've seen recommended thus far is Geburah, but at this point, that seems like it will be even harder to find. So, is there anything else that's close? I don't even care if it's GC, a somewhat less rare LE or DC would be fine as well.

    Dead Man's Hand

Thanks to dpoulsen for letting me try this one out, it really is fantastic. De Sade is possibly my favorite BPAL scent I've tried thus far, and has others have said, this is not De Sade, but it is a very different and equally incredible leather (or suede) scent. Throw is quite light, but this smells exactly like an american indian store, which I think smell just great.

    Velvet Dogs Playing Poker

Just got my velvet decants in and this is the first I've tried. It's really great, probably bottleworthy. It's coffee, but there is also a lot of wood in there, like a very natural coffee, freshly picked from the forest. Very interesting and comfortable. Not a great deal of throw, but not terrible in that respect.

    Bilquis

I'm amazed I like this, but I do. I usually go for the dirty manly scents, and from the description, this sounds somewhat sweet and floral, but what I get is very nutty and comforting, with a bit of sweetness in the background. Ultimately I guess it smells like a theater, the seats, the buttery popcorn, with a background of sugar babies. It's everything that is right about the theater experience without the body odor, blaring cell phones, and screaming kids. With that being said, I'm not sure I love it. My nose says it's wonderful, but my mind is questioning why I would want to go around smelling like a theater. I suppose I'm just going to have to wear it not knowing quite why I like it.

    Mad Sweeney

I don't know what alcohol this is (I associate it with brandy myself), but this scent is oozing with it. There are other notes here as well though, something smoky and musky, it doesn't have a dirt note, but it has definitely been dirtied with something. It smells like a drunk, kicked out of the pub hours ago, passed out in the gutter. I love it.

    Jolly Roger

Got this one recently in a swap (thanks WidgetAlley). It's quite nice. Woody, spicy, salty, but still has that clean aquatic quality. It reminds me of Bluebeard (which I love) but while Bluebeard is a foul pirate that never bathes and covers himself in lavender perfume to disguise that fact, Jolly Roger is just a clean guy who doesn't need to disguise his pungent odor. I'm glad I have a bottle of this, I'm not certain I plan on repurchasing if I run out, but it's nice to have what I do have.

    Thirteen (13): March 2009

Oooh! I get to be one of the first to review this one. Cool! In the bottle: Well, the first thing you get is BPAL's amazing cocoa note. It's like chocolate, but better. The cherry does follow close behind though, it's certainly not a background note as I was expecting. I also get something else, sort of like a brandy, overall it smells of those liqueur-filled chocolate-covered cherries. Wet: The chocolate immediately starts to die down on me. I'm left with something resembling cherry lip balm, but deeper and more complex. Probably not something I would normally put on myself, but pretty nice anyhow. The liqueur impression stays, but it recedes to the background. This stage is pretty much dominated by that deep cherry scent, hopefully the chocolate will make a return on the drydown, but if not, I can live with it. Dry: Doesn't really morph too much from the wet phase. The chocolate never has yet to return on me, which is a bit of a letdown, but it's still nice enough. I'll probably be putting the bottle up for swaps. 2 hours later: Pork? Is that you? Why do I suddenly smell like chocolate-covered salami? Maybe this is just a fluke with my particular body chemistry, but this is definitely getting swapped.

    Loviatar

Just got this as a frimp with my BPTP clocket (6 frimps for one locket, very generous). I'm really having a hard time deciding whether I like it or love it. My two favorite scents thus far have been tezcatlipoca and de sade, and it may be the simple fact that I only have so many scents to reference, but to me it sort of smells like the two got together and had a kid. It has the distinct leathery quality of the de sade, sweetened by whatever is in the tez that isn't chocolate. It's weird how this is not chocolatey, but reminds me so much of tez, which is very strong chocolate. The only question I have left is whether this is greater than the sum of its two parts, or becomes just decent for its compromise. I'll get back to you on that.

    Coyote

This one is too light for me. If it was a little bolder, I imagine I'd like it, as it's very earthy, like fresh-cut grass, but I can hardly find the scent even a few minutes after application.

How to remove scents from your skin

I have a neutrogena fragrance-free bar soap I use on my face. Just a couple of good scrubbings with that and the smell disappears to my nose.

    Highwayman

This one works terribly on me. From the bottle to the skin all the way through the drying process, it smells like a bad thrift shop. Old, dirty leather shoes, with the unwashed socks still in them, lightly urinated on and then left to sit in a box for a few years. I'm sure this can't be how it smells for everyone, but for me, it is unwearable. It's a shame, because I feel like if it smelled like old leather shoes in the right way, it would be quite nice, but this one just barely misses the mark and gets swallowed in a pit of ugliness.

    Tezcatlipoca

This scent is incredible. It has to be in a close race with De Sade for best smell on earth. Just such a perfect balance of the smokiness of the patchouli, the sweetness of the cocoa, and the leather. I hate sweet scents, but the sweetness in this just draws me further into its fantastic little world. It's one of those scents that exists on many levels and beckons you to unravel every one of them. Ahem, if I can stop being flowery for a moment, it smells really, really awesome. That is all.

    What scents are masculine? Gender-neutral?

Well, as a guy, my favorites thus far are Fenris Wolf, De Sade, and Bluebeard. Out of your selections, the only one I've tried is Antony, and it was a bit too floral for my tastes. It, or the others, might work out for you though.

    The Antikythera Mechanism

This one really doesn't work for me. It turns sickly sweet, like a cookie. Which would be good if I wanted to smell like a cookie, but I can't imagine that happening anytime soon.

    Phoenix Steamworks

Just trying this on and I have to say I'm disappointed. In the bottle it was much more complex and enticing, but on my skin it just smells like mediocre cologne with an herbal note which I'm now supposing is sage (sorry, I don't have a lot of experience with this stuff). I think I'll stick with my smokestack, now that fragrance has depth. This is not a bad scent, just not enticing enough to ever make me wear it over another, better one.

    De Sade

In the bottle: Leather with an acrid blood undertone. Immediately on the skin: Leather and alcohol. Dry: Smoky and leathery. The alcohol stays in the background, but I still get some sort of rum or brandy somewhere. I really do love this scent, it's so comforting while also being sexy and manly. For some reason I think I'd like this on a woman as well, though, or a horse, or a paper bag. Anything will do really, so long as I can take the occasional whiff.

    EPIC BPAL Spreadsheet Thread

While I've ordered only a small amount of scents thus far, I simply have a list of them in a plain text file. If I want to know if I've gotten something before, just hit CTRL + F and type in the name and there you go. Perhaps not as elegant as the Excel solution, but it seems like it will satisfy my needs.
