    Scherezade

I've had this imp for a long time simply because I was unwilling to let it go. So it sat, gathering dust, in my bpal box. Around the time when I first got it, I had applied and rather liked the warm, spicy sweetness. My bf who is ironically from persia (scherezade's actual origin) sniffed and said "ugh, smells like indian spices". So I said, "well, you know this is based off of a persian historical figure- and...and it has saffron in it!". "Saffron?" and he sniffed again, "meh, its ok but it smells like incense." So now, a year later, I sit with my imp and bring it back out. I apply and man, I swear its gotten even nicer since then! Wet: very strong, red musk Drying: the red musk lessons a little and some of the saffron begins to emerge. Dry: Mostly its still the red musk but I think the spices make it wearable for me since some other blends with red musk can be strangely sour. I can detect a slightly fruity floral below the dryness. To me this smells like the natural skin scent of an exotic and rich queen on a warm desert night. It truly conjures paintings of the middle east. I agree that it stays close without much throw but I have it on my forearm and as I type it does waft up to my nose. Because red musk is such a powerful scent on me it would be overpowering otherwise. The only issue I have with the scent is that others might not be able to appreciate it because to them, it probably (as most bpal did to me when i first started) smells only of incense and hippies (not that there's anything wrong with hippies). Still, I may get a bottle just to wear when out with close friends and at home because I enjoy the feeling I get from this so much

    Shattered

This is lovely. Its strange that many of the scents I'm liking now are ones that I've tried in the past and swapped away. My tastes must have changed because this is georgeous. Wet: This is the most beautiful phase when the mint is still detectable. Its a cold, sweet scent with shards of citrus ice. I think I can also smell the bubbly champaigne. Drying: The mint is gone, of course, but then I've never tried a mint that stays on for more than twenty minutes even though its my favorite note. The grapefruit livens up and takes over. Dry: On me a type of skin musk appears and mixes with the grapefruit and oh @$&% I'm beginning to smell soap. Sigh. I'll have to try it in a locket because this stuff is too perfect not to use.

    Dragon's Blood

I've been wanting to try this for quite some time. I love dragons and have always felt close to art, lore and symbolism depicting them. This is very close to dragon's eye except that it lacks the smooth lilac note. To me its something akin to Jasmine. I don't get any incense or fruit. Just a strong floral. Its very nice and reminds me of a stronger wolf's heart. As this dries it does get a little deeper and warmer. I've been looking for a nice floral that also has some oomph behind it and I think the throw on this is perfect. With both dragon's eye and dragons blood on my skin I'm getting a little bit of a headache. They are lovely blends but they do pack a bite

    Dragon's Eye

Hmm. Strange. I remember trying this on last year but not liking it. Wet: A sharp, shrill pale floral. It smells a lot like jasmine even though that note is not listed. Perhaps its the dragons blood and lily. The throw on this thing is dangerous! Drying: Its calming down now and getting more heady. I'd say its now a light purple. MMmm! This must be the lilac. Its very sweet with a delicately spicy base. Dry: The throw has lessened and the blend has smoothed out and warmed over. There's a hint of plastic in the drydown when I sniff up close. Well I like it well enough but I'll have to give it a test run and wear it to work tomorrow to see if that icky note goes away.

    Blood Rose

Oh wow! I had no idea (before reading the description) that this had dragon's blood in it! That may be a new favorite component Not many red rose scents work on me as they can go a bit strange and sour on the drydown. But this is a very sweet slightly incensed rose. Even though this is a sweet rose there is something at the base of it that keeps it from being cloying. There is a richness that I imagine comes from the dragons blood because wine can be a bit much for me and usually amps to high heaven (except when its kept in check by a smooth base like this and blood kiss). Its a lovely scent that borders innocence and a sexy worldliness. Perfect and even sophisticated with a very slight edge so its great for work too. As with most of my favorite scents the lasting power is a bit weak. Nice throw towards the beginning though! This just might make it into my top ten!

    Desire

Huh. Well this is strange. I don't think I smell any of the listed notes because they're combining into one big ball of yuck. It smells like soapy (well ok, that *could* be the rose) pina coladas. Very different mix and kind of powdery. Blech.

    Utrennyaya

I've had a fleeting love affair with Utrennyaya because I always seem to go for the scents that don't have much throw or wearlength unfortunately and the first few times I tried this on it wasn't strong enough for me and turned rather soapy. But then one day I pulled the lonely little imp out of my box and put it on. Strangely enough I think I'm completely *addicted* to this scent. Wet: Minty in a clean pepperminty way with soft florals underneath. After it dries: Clean, slightly soapy lillies with an ethereal breeze of mint. Definately bottle worthy because its refreshing, sweet and clean. The notes sound nothing like a perfume I would have picked for myself but I was frimped with this and just can't be without it now! I've used my whole imp which is unusual for such a short span of time. This is similar to how I thought Snow White would smell but that one turned kind of playdoughy and strange (the 04 version anyway). I can really see myself wearing this everyday!

    The Phantom Wooer

A lifeless love song: stargazer lily, bone dust, tomb mosses, buttonweed, moonflower, and honey myrtle. Yep. The first thing I thought of when I tried this on was men's cologne. It's not a bad smell just...not me. Off to swaps!

    Embalming Fluid

Wow! Such a refreshing scent. And I must be backwards because its fall and I'm craving mint and tea scents rather than the heavier ones. This is a very simple, perfumey green tea with lemon scent and a hint of light musk. Just gorgeous and simple and sophisticated. I used to wear green tea body sprays and this is very close to that. It has the perfect throw and wearlength too which is strange for such a bright scent. Oils tend to burn off my skin pretty fast but I get whiffs of this throughout the day. I think this will replace dormouse (even though I love that one a lil more) due to the fact that I can actually smell this one on myself

    Knock-A-Dolly

Knock-A-Dolly is my first BPAL room spray! I can finally add my review now that the cold of death is over. It smells really lovely! It's not as 'orange' as I was expecting. It is much cooler in feel... almost breezy. Very reminiscent of a chilly autumn night thick with the smell of baking pies (though not pumpkin per say) encrusted with cinnamin and sugar. The sugar fades after awhile and what remains is a dry, piney earth smell thats just fantastic. This will also be a great one for the Holidays as the piney scent almost smells like a christmas tree.

    Cake Smash

Ohhh- I like! At first it is this YUMMY, realistic, nommable cake with cream cheese frosting (as everyone else says). Makes my mouth water. After a few moments, I can smell the snake oil/dorian/constantine mix developing from underneath it and totally confusing my nose. It smells sharp and piney mostly. But THEN, only about ten minutes later, I get whiffs of vanilla cake. When I sniff my arm I get strange spiciness that doesn't really remind me of snake oil (unless its only a drop becase SO goes medicinal on me and this does not) or Dorian and it doesn't smell like pine either so I'm not sure what this is but it almost smells like gingerbread and wood shavings. Maybe it is the DC. But from a distance this is still beautiful, vanilla cake and while not strong, the wafts come from the strangest angles lol. I swear it smells like its near my face but my arm is actually down or I'll think its something I tried on my other arm. A very strange, sneaky scent. I'll have to see how this wears on a full day's trial. I'm worried the wood shavings will take over but as long as that stays close to my skin I don't mind. If it does then I'll keep my decant and use it in a locket

    Honey and Beeswax scents

Jezebel I believe is just orange blossom and honey but it has rose too.

    Bite Me

Very nice!! This is very elegant actually. Wet: Foody almond and caramel. On skin: A sweet floral is amping along with the almond (which as others have said is a darker, less cherry almond) Dry: Rosy almond but the rose-like note (whetever is causing that) is controlled and not sickening like most rose blends. I really like this even though its not what I was expecting!

    Boo

Well apparantly ghosts smell like butter. Thick sweet land o'lakes with no freshness whatsoever. I felt like I needed to take a shower when I had it on but couldn't because I was in a room full of people who probably thought I just got finished milking a cow and churning it to sell at a country fair. Either that or I spent the night in a barn. Yuck'o greasyness. Yeah. Damn. Its nonae capricona (or however you spell it) all over again. I was really looking forward to this one too

    Lucy, Kissed

I agree that this is a dark blend- even stains my skin a little! In the bottle: I smell incense, men's cologne and something sweet and floral. On my skin: The cologny smell disappears (thank goodness) and the incense REALLY comes out (dragon's blood and red musk?) and I get a hint of floral sweetness. Very thick. After awhile: The red musk increases and turns the scent very ashen and dry. I smell something underneath that is almost bitter- not sure what that is. There is also something cool and clean filtering through the heavier notes every now and then which might be the florals trying to surface. Its a very red scent and there is something crunchy and brown that I associate with incense sticks but not the smoke. I really hope the floral comes out a little more as I think then it would be perfect. The throw isn't terribly strong on me but the scent itself is heavy so I imagine when I'm moving around it will waft in a favorable way. It would be too overwhelming if it were stronger. Conclusion: I love the scent, the story and the artwork (sooo pretty!) so this is a keeper. It seems like it will be wonderful for the cooler weather and at night (probably will wear it to my book signing at Horrorfind next weekend!). I'm a little worried about that bitter note but this is also not the time to be testing smellies so I will try again in a few days after the monthly curse moves on... EDIT: Tried again today and it's much sweeter! The roses and violets seem to come out more and it smells a little bit like zombie without the earth. The incense and musk is still there but it has toned down a little more. VERY wearable for me (though not to work of course) and I'll be wearing it to my event this weekend so keep your fingers crossed for some 'ohh you smell good' comments.

    Dia de los Muertos

Oh my gosh! This is very, very close to Samhain 08 on my skin. It has that same warm, honeyed base and I think I can smell the leaves! Its less harsh and astringent than samhain and I can detect a bit of floral in there but this is gorgeous! Not at all what I expected from the description! I think I have to wear it a few times to see if its me- I still like the apple from Samhain more but this might make a great work scent!
  17. I second both Defututa and Blood kiss... they are my sexxayy scents Defututa smells like post sex with a cigarette (but not smoky) and blood kiss is just husky we're-on-the-floor-right-now kind of scent.

    Eternal

Well- so far I only have one other floral out of the many imps I've tried that I really like but I think I've finally found a second At first it smells very much like the Fox Woman Kuzanoha Leaving Her Child but then it becomes shriller and whiter. More effervescent. The gardenia is heavy at first and very moist. It's quite a humid scent. But upon the drydown it becomes a little drier and I do imagine white boquets when I smell it. I'm very happy it's not turning to soap! Something about it also reminds me Tissue from the Shunga's (before it aged and turned rancid on me ) The throw seems to greatly diminish as it dries however I'll have to apply more another day and give it a complete test run.

    Twinkle, Twinkle Little Bat

Oooh! What a nice summer scent! It's a blast of cool melon (very similar to the melon in Earth Ox but without the incense) with tea and a bit of green. Its very sweet and nearly drinkable but sadly it fades on my skin with very little throw

    Against Idleness and Mischief

Gah!!! This is lovely!!! This starts out a bit sharp but then turns progressively sweeter as the honey and hyssop take over. It melds with my chemistry to become a sweet, perfect herbal honey that doesn't turn strange toward the drydown like many other honey scents do. This stayed true through 8 hours of work and counting!!! This is the surprise hit out of my Wonderland imps and I'm so glad I tried it
  21. Ohh I LOVE sweet scents! I find Aunt Caroline's Joy Mojo to be a very sweet, strawberryish candy scent that isn't creamy (which also has calming properties to boot!) that I and those who have sniffed it on me enjoy. It's not foody but I wouldn't be adverse to drinking something that smelled of it if that makes sense I also love Daiyu, sweet acai berry with tea and Poisoned Apple. Good luck!!!

    Iambe

Daughter of Pan and Echo and dear friend to Demeter. When Demeter was mourning the abduction of her daughter, Iambe was the only creature in heaven and earth that was able to lend cheer and laughter to the grieving mother. Her scent is one of comfort, beauty and joy: Sudanese amber, patchouli, rose, gardenia, gladiola and white tea. Wow! A patchouli scent I actually like! Wet:This starts off as a spicy floral. I get more gardenia than rose thankfully. Its very moist and sticky at first. Dry: Later the rose comes out and sweetens it a bit, toning down the initial patchouli burst. Uh-oh, its starting to go soapy. Hmm. I'll have to retest. It's lovely in the wet stage but I'm not sure how soapy this will get.

BPAL Fruit Blends - the many variations

While its not very tart, I found that acai berry is one fruit that lasts for 24 hrs on my skin. Daiyu is berry tea scent and Austrailian copperhead is a berry vanilla. The rest just seem to fade on me.

    Nonae Caprotina

Ahh. The long awaited bottle of Nonae Caprotina. In the bottle: Strong, heavy slighty nauseating rotten milk and myrrh. Oh noes! Wet: The scent lightened up to the scent of warm milk- like when you heat it in the microwave. Oddly it smells like breast milk but I've heard goats milk does smell like that. Dry: Hmm. Ohh that's really nice. I can smell the sweetness of the fig a little now, especially up close. The myrrh is beginning to come out a little making it warmer and a touch powdery. The fig is turning a little plasticy but the other scents do well to hold it together. This is a little different than what I was expecting and sometimes the sourness is a little much, especially toward the beginning but I think it will be a wonderful fall scent. I will retest a few days from now when my hormonal conditions are more..favorable. Edit: Ugh- I don't know if I can try this again... later this got overwhelmingly cloying and gave me a severe headache. And I hardly ever get headaches from bpal. It actually reminded me of thick, warm coconut milk which I had an adverse reaction to once. The bf said I smelled like squashed plums in the Bed Bath and Beyond store. Not sure what that means but I don't think its good. I wanted to love this so much

    Velvet

My imp appears to be a bit aged just to clarify... Wet: Oh no- it's the stinky wet dog cocoa smell from Gelt Dry: Hmm. Ok, this is nice! The wet dog has ran away and left a lovely golden incense which I assume is the myrrh. Mixed with the ever softening cocoa note this is heaven. I let the boy smell when wet and he replied "It smells like crap." lol. But when it dried he liked it much more. Not more than some of the other bpal scents but whenever he doesnt run away from me because of a scent thats normally a good sign. This is what I had hoped Gelt would be and I think it may be a bottle purchase. Its comforting and foody yet sophisticated. Plus I could still smell this on my wrists this morning! Though the longer it wears the more it does resemble hershey's scented pencils (remember those?). But its lovely enough in the dry down stage that I can always reapply. Win!
