Foundation of Fortune
Little Bird replied to joseybird's topic in Prosperity, Success, and Good Fortune
I haven't really used this one for any specific purpose yet, so this is going to just be a commentary on the scent. The smell of Foundation of Fortune is an earthy, dry, almost dusty sort of scent at first, with a spicier drydown. It's dry, earthy, and warm. The drydown does remind me a bit of the way that the red ginger singlenote smelled on my skin, kind of spicy-lemony, but still very dry and earthy. Perhaps a bit cedar-like on me as well. Not a favorite scent of mine, but not off-putting or unbearable in any way either. -
Mantle of Venus smells like pure sweet clove on me, but a lighter and more wearable sort of sweet clove. It's well, sweeter, and less pungent than clove often is on me. The first time that I put this on, I was feeling really depressed because the camping trip that I'd been planning for months seemed to have fallen through, and my boy's work schedule has really picked up, so it was looking like I wouldn't see him for a while. After putting this on, my friend gave me a call and said that he got the needed time off work and the money to still go on our camping trip. My mother bought me a new tent that she found on sale. And the boy called me a few hours later to tell me that he has some free time this weekend to spend with me <3. Maybe those things are all just very pleasant coincidences, but I'm definitely in a better mood now and I'm feeling like my luck may have taken a turn for the better.

I've been using Euphony as a room scent, and I honestly don't see much of a change in anything around me. It's clean and powdery and I actually like the smell... it reminds me of the way that new houses smell, when you can actually smell the woodwork and all of the new carpet and everything. It smells new to me, but the environment is the same old drama.

This starts off smelling strongly of peppermint, but it quickly softens into something that reminds me more of spearmint and vanilla, as it isn't as sharp as peppermint usually is on me. And then after a half hour or so, this begins to smell rather cinnamony as well. It reminds me of Big Red chewing gum and mints.

Thagirion is very fruity and clean on me. At first I thought that it smelled very lemony, but the drydown was more reminiscent of sour apples. When I lived in Missouri, I spent a lot of time at our neighbor's house and they always had a line of laundry hanging up outside in the middle of a little orchard of crabapple trees. Thagirion smells just like clean laundry and crabapple trees. This isn't the sort of scent that I would normally go for, but I find myself loving this one, if only for the pleasant childhood memories

Nahemoth is interesting, though not the sort of fragrance that I'd ever really wear. I don't like musky-fruity blends, and this definitely falls into that category. At first on my skin, this one smells like amber and dark plum, which was a pleasantly sweet combination. Then it gets very musky and perfumey (the sort of musky that gives me a headache) and the fruity begins to smell like orange hard candies on me. The drydown of citrus and musk is really not a good combo for me; it has a sharpness that I'm not liking.

Limited editions equivalents in the general catalog?

Mouse's Long & Sad Tale smells like a lighter and more powdery version of Monster Bait: Underpants on me. But they still have a striking similarity, especially for the first few minutes that they're on my skin. -
Gamaliel smells like spicy woods in the bottle and morphs into a light herbal tea with lemon as soon as it hits my skin. After a half hour or so, this smells exactly like LUSH's Avobath ballistic. I'm not getting any of the other notes that other reviewers have mentioned... it's just a very strong lemongrass on me.
-
I have a hard time picking out any individual notes in this one. Sniffing it in the bottle, the only word that comes to mind is 'sweet.' It's very faint. On me... still that faint sweetness. I'm definitely not getting any of the cedar or patchouli that other reviewers have mentioned. Perhaps some dragon's blood. The closest that I can come to comparing this to something else would be to say that it smells similar to the way that Dragon's Milk smells on me. If Dragon's Milk were much lighter and had a darker, smoky edge to it. Very nice.

In the bottle, this smells like a lovely, dark incense. On me... more incense. Sathariel smells like a mixture of wonderful incense blends that I already know. Like a mixture of Midnight Mass's sweeter, powdery incense, waxy candle, and Al Azif's smokier floral incense. And it stays pretty true to that first impression. Sathariel is an amazing blend. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes resin/incense scents

I love foodie scents and I love sweet scents... but Eat Me is so intensely sweet that it makes me feel sort of nauseous. At first, this smells like a combination of gummi bears and vanilla on me. Gummi bears with an extra pound of sugar added to their recipe. And vanilla frosting with so much extra sugar that it has that grainy taste. The point is that this is SUGARY. After about an hour, the fruitiness has dried down and I don't get the gummi bear smell anymore. But I'm left with hyper-sweet vanilla that actually smells somewhat like vanilla incense on me. It has a very smoky, suffocating sort of quality. In Eat Me I have finally found a blend that is actually way too sweet for me. Drink Me is pure, complex foodie heaven on me... this one is a bit too much of a good thing. I don't know if I'd ever be able to wear Eat Me. I don't much want to smell like sugar buzzed gummi bears and vanilla incense. The overall result was that this was so strong and sweet that it actually made me a bit queasy (and I'm a person that normally *loves* sweet).

In the bottle I kept thinking that this smells kind of like marijuana and I get the same toned down smell on my skin at first. Thankfully, some spices come out to cover up that impression. This isn't intensely floral on me, but I am getting a good dose of cinnamon. It smells like dusty, old, wooden trunks and cinnamon on me. Sort of reminds me of playing around in my grandmother's attic and finding some of her old spice racks. In the drydown, I'm getting an herbal, sweet sort of floral. Perhaps jasmine or honeysuckle. Dixie Love Perfume smells very heady and intriguing on me. I'll enjoy wearing a tiny bit of this for the boy and seeing what unfolds

I was a bit afraid to try Dragon Moon, just because dragon's blood doesn't seem to work well on my skin in most cases (exception: Dragon's Milk). Surprisingly, I don't get much dragn's blood out of this one at all, except perhaps a spicy/hot hint for a few seconds upon first application. First on, this is all bamboo and tea leaf, and is reminding me a lot of Holiday Moon. Green and fresh, with hints of sweetness. In the drydown, more of the cherry blossom comes out and it's really gorgeous. It's such a sweet and pleasant floral. Dragon Moon turns into something like cherry blossom singlenote on me after a while. It's a pretty, sweet floral. This isn't something that I would typically wear, but I am enjoying it.

I don't get along with most aquatics and ozones, as they tend to smell like evil migraine inducing dryer sheets on me. Still, I want to like The Pool of Tears, just because it would be a great perfume to wear when I'm feeling angsty and self-pitying. First on, something about this smells strangely like BO and sweat on me . Flowers drowned in dirty, salty water. The dirtiness fades off after a while to linger in the background, but it's still very odd. At the Brookfield Zoo in IL, they have a living coast exhibit featuring all sorts of coastal water creatures. The Pool of Tears smells exactly like that exhibit on me. Cold water, salt, and animals... This is a somewhat pleasant change from the usual dryer sheets smell that I get, but I still don't see myself ever wearing an aquatic scent like this.

Hymn to Proserpine smells like someone took Oya's dark plum and turned it into a sugar plum. Amber goes to dusty powder on me and pomegranate is one of the fruits that smells sharp and awful on me... and all I'm getting here is sweet, sugared plum. Dark and sweetly fruity. It's a very simple fragrance on me. I can see myself getting a 5 ml of this one .

On me, this is definitely more than a spark of lavender. I get a hint of cherry for about the first 30 seconds, and then it's all lavender. Sweet, cool lavender. I'm not getting any musk at all or any rose. After about 15 minutes, I'm getting some rosewood in with the lavender. Unfortunately, rosewood doesn't smell very good on me (okay, it smells acrid like vomit, honestly). The sweet lavender in this is pleasant enough, but it's too much lavender... and not good at all on me paired with the rosewood. I'm afraid I'll have to find a new home for my imp

Mouse's Long & Sad Tale smelled sweeter to me back in 2006. Now my aged bottle and recent lab purchase bottle smell more sharp and clean, like the vanilla sweetness has faded and the floral aspects have amped up and gone a bit sharper. Clean, cool, perfumey floral with a bit of powdery sweetness from the amber, sandalwood and vanilla. It's definitely more floral and sandalwood on me now than it was in 2006. I sometimes find that this is a little too sharp and simple for me nowadays. It's clean floral more than anything else.

I thought that I would like Tweedledum more than Tweedledee, but I think that Tweedledee is actually the winner on my skin. Orange blossom sometimes smells strangely burnt and foul on my skin, but it is just lovely in this blend. I get mostly orange blossom, and it's sweet and beautiful, as it should be. At first there is a bite of pepper in the background, but it fades away after a few minutes and leaves me behind nothing but orange blossom and a hint of white tea. It's a very simple/refreshing scent on me, and one that would be great for summer. Tweedledum struck me as being more masculine, Tweedleedee as more feminine. They would be a cute pair for me and the boy to wear out together. If we are in a sickeningly matchy mood

First on, I do not get any fig or patchouli out of this blend at all. Tweedledum smells like green tea mixed with a mango soda, as it has a bubbling and effervescent quality to it that makes me think of soda. It's a nice mix of tea and fruity, but not really what I was expecting. Very refreshing. In the drydown, earthy patchouli and fig come out and ground this blend for me. Over time, my first impression completely shifts and a lot of the tea and fruitiness fades. Tweedledum becomes more of an earthy blend with hints of fruit in the background. It's like patchouli and fig with a bit of that fruity soda that I had mentioned. Interesting. I like this, but I don't really love it. I could see Tweedledum working out better on my boy.

I think that this was my most anticipated and longed for BPAL scent ever. I purchased a 10 ml of it the first day that it was released, because it just sounds that good. Drink Me smells just like buttered toast, creamy-sweet custard, and hints of cherry in the bottle. On me, there's a burst of cherry and pineapple mingling with a buttery toast and caramel-like sweetness. In the drydown, this is mostly a creamy vanilla-like custard with lots of rich toffee thrown in. I still get hints of the toast and fruity cherry in the background, popping up every once in a while. For a while the pineapple gets really strong and overly sweet on my skin. Without the fruity notes, this would be perfect. As it is, the custard and toast make the hyper-sweet canned fruit smell bearable for me. So yummy.

I was expecting this to be sweet, but it definitely isn't the foodie sweet fragrance that I was expecting. This is a sharp and powerful ginger, very earthy and kind of lemony. In the drydown I'm getting that odd, earthy potato-ish scent that other reviewers have mentioned. I can't imagine actually wearing this as a perfume, and I'm not sure what I would want to layer it with either. Red Ginger is overwhelmingly strong on me.

Lobban is pure lemon dish soap on me. Herbal, lemony, and soapy. After fifteen minutes or so, I'm also picking up some sort of sharp and astringent floral note behind the citrus-soapiness. The combination of sharp florals, citrus, and soap is not good at all on me. This is my anti-scent

Vetiver/t is one of those notes that can be amazing on my skin or just amazingly awful. Torment is a strong, earthy vetiver that is rather dark and overwhelming on me for the first fifteen minutes. Then the spicy-herbal bay kicks in and I like this a little more. After an hour, this is still strongly earthy vetiver, but it's starting to go powdery on me. I never smell any of the gardenia that is supposed to be in this one. It's dark, earthy, slightly herbal, and a tad spicy... with a drydown of strong baby powder. Torment is not a good scent for me.

This is going to be mainly a scent-based review, as I'm not really working with it for its intended purpose and I only have a wee imp of this that will be passed on to a new owner quite soon. I'm not really looking to attract prosperity right now, I just want to have a relaxing/healthy vacation while I'm out of school for a few months, lol. That said: Perpetuum Bonum is sickeningly almond-y on me. It has that thick, sweet, boozy cherry smell that kind of reminds me of cherry flavored cough syrup. It is rather similar to Horn of Plenty on me, as other people have mentioned, but it doesn't have the same vanilla note that I get from Horn of Plenty. This stays very strong and cherry-ish on me though, with a powdery herbal scent coming out more in the drydown. Not a good smell for me.

Spectre does not work out well on me, and I honestly wasn't expecting it to. Tuberose is unbearably sharp and harsh on me and lily often goes soapy. At first, I'm getting mostly a sweet, slightly powdery lilac scent, but even the hint of sharp tuberose in the background is making me queasy. Drydown... this is soapy, a bit watery, and unpleasantly sharp. I'm not getting any sandalwood, but this is a medley of rather sadistic florals on me.
