    Dragon Belch

I think the lightly-chewed villager is showing up as baby powder and a generic, white, lotion-y skin scent that's just a tad soapy. I wasn't expecting this to be such a clean scent and I dislike the strong baby powder smell. As it dries down, I can smell the vintage perfume quality of the oakmoss (dry and sophisticated, perfumey moss) and the labdanum and smoke meld together to a burning amber incense scent. It becomes an odd impression of a clean, proper, goodie two shoes of a person feeling scandalized in a shop full of incense, dusty crystals, and vaguely occult items. Too much powder for me.

    Dragonsplaining

I wore Dragonsplaining this morning and thought that it was a sandalwood single note. The wood is dry, slightly creamy-smooth, and has that calm, meditative presence to it. I don't get any patchouli or smoke at all. Only strong for about an hour and fades quickly after that.

    Oblivion Railroad

A very sour, dry, herbal lavender that smells like it's been set on fire. I was hoping for a sweeter resinous scent, but I don't smell the syrupy opoponax or frankincense. In the drydown, it smells harshly soapy. Industrial soap, sour lavender, and acrid smoke that reminds me of burning metal after a while. Gaueko is much sweeter and smoother to me.

    Secret Donuts

This is such a hyperrealistic donut scent. For the first couple minutes, I can so clearly smell a chocolate frosted donut and then it's maple frosted donuts and original glazed Krispy Kremes. In the mid stage for the first couple hours of wear, I get a scent like fresh pressed apple cider (no spices, just the thick, murky, sweet and tart cider) mixed with the donuts and it's so autumnal and delightful, and then that fades away and I'm left with Krispy Kreme original glazed and maple frosted donuts. It really smells like fluffy, fresh donuts. I am going to wear this so much when fall rolls back around.

The Obsequies of an Egyptian Cat

Gorgeous and interesting and so much going on here without it smelling chaotic or too much. It reminds me of the hodgepodge of offerings that I sometimes do for my altar. Chunks of smooth myrrh and golden amber melting in a warmer, snips of evergreen branches where you can smell the green needle and wood along with the sweet sap, hints of spice and honey and dark cocoa that melt into the resins rather than turning gourmand, a dark and sweet rose, and the warm, grounding earthiness of patchouli. The best resins infused with all of the things. Myrrh is one of my favorite things and it's very strong here, so that makes me super happy. It took me almost a year to try this because I've been in the middle of moving from Canada back to the States and had to pack up a lot of my perfume before I could even open the bottles once, but it was worth the wait. I put a little of this on my altar today too.

    Peasants Fleeing (Witchcraft)

Bpal has the best leather scents. This one smells like the peasants are fleeing to the horse stables - warm, well worn saddle leather, the honeyed sweet scent of dry hay, sunwarmed wood and earth, and a cozy riding jacket. Barn wood always has a particular sweet scent to me, aged in the sun and sort of amber-y, and I get that scent here. The dark musk isn't the usual black musk note, but something more warm, cuddly, smooth, sweet and kinda like musk stick candy, which gets stronger in the drydown. I don't think I have anything else in my collection that smells like this and I really like it.

    L.A. River Pumpkin

I am not a fan of this one, but I have never been a fan of sickly sweet fruity fragrances. I get mostly pineapple, but it smells like mushy, syrupy, overly sugared, canned pineapple, and something that turns powdery and tart like crushed up sweet tarts candies thrown into canned pineapple. The other notes all sounded interesting to me, but I can't smell any of them. Not even any pumpkin or pumpkin spice.
  8. I get a surprising amount of ylang ylang from this, showing up as a very powdery-creamy, sweet, tropical floral. It reminds me of the scent of real plumeria flowers. Then there's the spicy clove, sweet beeswax, and warm amber glowing underneath the floral. It forms this heady, sweet, floral-oriental fragrance. I can imagine the scent of aged, yellow, old book paper in this as well, that vanillic, honeyed scent that old books develop. As it dries down, I keep thinking that I smell a soft black leather note as well (maybe the black pepper and black amber giving off this impression?) and sweet incense smoke. Not at all what I was expecting, but this is complex, heady, and sensual. Plumeria flowers melting into beeswax, dusted in sweet clove, and a stack of leather bound old books and burning incense.

Merry Owls on Velocipedes and Tricycles

I ordered a bottle of this in a weak moment because I love owls, but I'm surprised that I actually really enjoy this scent and it's become one of my favorite Yule blends. Merry Owls is such a fairy tale rose scent, like the most beautiful, sweet, dewy roses somehow growing out of glittering ice (but no mint or snow note on me, somehow an impression of creamy coldness and a scent like evergreen encased in ice). There's a slightly woody, slightly herbal, sweet note that makes me think of rose thorns as well. After an hour, there's a creamy, soft, lotion-like scent to this and it reminds me of a grown up version of Pink Snowballs. The blend leans quite sweet on me and I really enjoy it.

    Santa Doesn’t Need Your Help

The bright, cheerful, sugared candy plum with a hint of juiciness note of Midwinter's Eve, but infused with cool, creamy, floral breezy lavender. I love the first couple minutes where the lavender is stronger, but my skin quickly eats the lavender and I'm left with Midwinter's Eve's candied plum that's just slightly more cool toned and breezy feeling than usual. I love Midwinter's Eve, so this is still fine for me. I wouldn't say that I ever smell the marshmallow note.

    Cat at the Table

The white tea is crisp with nuances of freshly cut green grass, freshly sliced lemon, and vanilla sugar (kind of like Paper Phoenix mixed with Elizabeth Arden's Green Tea after a while). Then there's dry, warm wood and hints of papery incense smoke that does give off a grey impression with the grey amber, sandalwood, and vanilla oud blending together. Relaxing tea party with the doors open to the outside and gentle incense burning nearby. Very pretty.

    Cat Seen From Behind

This is one of those scents that feels like a spiritual experience to me, so I love it. It smells like a misty sauna in the woods during winter, suggestions of snow and steam (a little minty), with expensive sandalwood incense wafting through the air and mist. The patchouli comes through in the drydown, but it's a quiet background note that smells like a forest floor and comforting earth. I usually don't like bpal's sandalwood notes at all because they turn to baby powder on me, but this smells like elegant, smooth woods and the toasted part like good quality sandalwood incense. The tonka and rice milk add a gentle, cool creaminess and subtle sweetness that's really enjoyable in the drydown as well. A very calming, quiet, meditative blend.
  13. A very clean jasmine that has an herbal/weedy tone to it from the galbanum. The jasmine threatens to turn soapy, but never quite makes it. The rose isn't very sweet or fresh smelling. It's more of a bitter, dark rose that makes me think of rosewood (the rose, sandalwood, and galbanum combo) and cough syrup. As it dries down, it's musky and powdery over the jasmine and rose, in a very sharp way. Sometimes I get a little sweetness from the lilac, but it fades in and out, and the scent is kind of too mature for my tastes. I like floral blends that are sweet, creamy, or gourmand, or that smell like actual, fresh flowers, and this is more of the perfumey, fake, musky-soapy flower side of the house.

    A Snug Corner

Goes on like a cloud of dry flour and tart, slightly sour, freshly sliced apples dusted in cinnamon. I'm awful at picking out herbal notes, but there's something in here that smells like a tangy, dried herb. I was surprised that the apple doesn't really stick around on me at all. A Snug Corner leaves me smelling like a lightly spiced pie crust in the drydown - dry, delicately sweet, golden and flour-y.

    Sleeping Cat

Sleeping Cat smells exactly like Ye Olde Christmas Shoppe at Disney World and I love it. I usually don't like pine or cinnamon scents and especially not mixed together, but I always love the smell of that shop for some reason. The pine in this isn't misty and realistic; it's more like air freshener pine, but I like the sweetness and dark, foresty vibe of it. The cinnamon is a whiff of cinnamon brooms and I normally hate that smell too, but I like it here somehow. The amber is grounding and warm. After a couple hours, it's mostly dry, sandy amber with hints of pine and only a tiny bit of cinnamon. I want to hoard this for the Yule season.

    White Cat

I thought that this was going to be powdery white florals (yay brain fog) and then was really confused as to why I smelled like amazing, fluffy, lemony marshmallows on a base of warm amber after slathering this on. I was really happy about the turn of events, though. ? Penis Bound With Gold Ribbon is one of my favorite bpal blends and it has similar notes of "golden musk, sweet amber, and lemon cream." White Cat is like the sweeter, more youthful, more playful counterpart. The amber isn't as dark in White Cat, the golden musk is stronger, and the fluffy sweetness is much stronger. As it dries down, it's mostly a fluffy vanilla marshmallow scent with hints of lemon zest and a warm, glowing, golden musk and soft amber. I really like how bpal made this scent smell fluffy, soft, and cuddly like the kitty on the label. As a cat person, I really appreciate this series and think that it is really well done. I've always wished that bpal would do a cat line and a bird line like their butterfly series, so this is a dream come true for me. ?

    Chastising Your Dragon

A sour, sharp, chemical, white musky floral and baby powdery sandalwood. Sharply soapy in the drydown. This is like my nightmare scent.

    Dragon Snugs

Creamy, sweet honey is very strong, giving me a honeyed marshmallow impression. The tea, I think, is adding a crispness, breezy floral, and touch of herbal tea leaf. It is mostly a sugary, creamy honey, though.

By Day She Made Herself into a Cat

There are so many different varieties of black musk, but this one reminds me of black ink, incense cones, and velvety, warm fur. The amber is sweetly resinous and I would have guessed it was myrrh, actually. There's a spicy warmth to it in the drydown that's clove-like to me. Very deep, dark, and resinous/ incensey. I love it.

    Cat Churning Butter

A gorgeous, perfect, simple sweet cream perfume. It reminds me very much of Bpal's Boo and a little bit of Haus of Gloi's Ghost Puffs. Cool vanilla, sugared milkiness, and a whiff of salted butter. It's also very strong with great throw on my skin. It might require a backup bottle.

    Raminou

I cannot resist buying cat themed fragrances from any company. My own little furry familiars are often the only things that keep me going on my hardest days. Raminou is one of those well blended scents for me where most of the notes don't really leap out at me, but they're there, just all blended together seamlessly into something larger. I expected Raminou to be loud, big, and bold, but it has a quieter, calmer feel to it, more lazy and indulgent than passionate. It's a great scent for a chonky tabby getting ready to lounge in its favorite spot for the entirety of the day with no particular urgency towards anything, just snoozing and soaking up sunshine. I get the red musk, but it's not as loud or sweet as usual; it's more warm and cuddly with a hint of glowing red wine to it, and the golden vanilla, tonka and honey add a creaminess and warm, golden sunshine feel without turning gourmand or reminiscent of frosting or baked goods. The labdanum and cashmere add a powdery, snuggly, warm tone. Further into the drydown, the hint of saffron and patchouli are gorgeous and add an earthy spiciness and the myrrh comes through as well to make things a little sweeter and richer, with a flair of dry oakmoss giving it a feel of sophisticated vintage perfume. All of the notes radiate warmth and comfort to me.

    The First Sun Prototype

The Lab sold a bunch of bottles of The Great Conjunction and The First Sun prototypes on etsy and I picked up both. The Great Conjunction turns too powdery for me, but The First Sun is lovely on me. It's like a perfumey orange creamsicle with threads of golden frankincense woven through it. I get a powdery amber in the drydown as the citrus fades off, but it's still more of a sweet, resinous, golden frankincense and creamy, cool vanilla tone on my skin.
  23. Little Bird

    The Great Conjunction prototype

This goes on like mimosas - fizzy champagne and sunny orange juice - spilled over a much darker, slightly earthy, mineral scent. The mimosa impression mostly disappears after 15 or 20 minutes (just a hint of fizz left behind) and the darker base notes strengthen. It's earthy, rocky, and darkly musky to me (like black musk, but sweeter like the musk in blends like Smut). I think I'm getting a base of slightly powdery, dark labdanum and maybe a little patchouli? The fizzy impression also shifts to a bright, metallic, slightly cologne-y tone. I love the mid-stage, but around the 40 minute mark, the whole thing just turns powdery and nondescript on my skin and stays that wear for hours. Very powdery amber.

    Easter Egging

The sandalwood in this is so unbearably powdery, dry and odd on my skin, like dusty baby powder and Play-Doh. Something also smells weirdly burnt on my skin. Because of the scent name, it keeps making me think of burnt eggshells. Rose usually amps on my skin, but I can't find it here. There's a sweetness, but it doesn't smell like white chocolate or marshmallow on me. I have trouble with bpal's white sandalwood going powdery and off on my skin, but this is somehow even stronger and worse. I had good luck with most of the 2022 Liliths, but this one doesn't work on me.

    Summer Rain

Smells like a sudden deluge of rain absolutely drowned an herb garden and the tender greens are all waterlogged and giving off an herbal-spicy scent. The hint of rain on hot cement is there too. The lavender and coconut don't come out for about an hour on my skin, but they add a really beautiful, super creamy, delicately sweet undertone to the rainwater and herbs in the drydown. I expected this to turn soapy on me, but it doesn't. It's very atmospheric and calming.
