Gourmand - Foody Scents - General Recommendations

I can't think of any bpal scents that have a strong brown sugar note specifically. You might want to try Kill-Devil, Gluttony, and Hellcat. They're not brown sugar, but they have a mix of other foodie notes that are reminiscent of brown sugar. Cockaigne has a very brown sugar type scent on my skin as well. -

It's been a while since I watched anything Buffy, but I could see Spike smelling like Dorian or something with a bit of leather in it, like The Bow & Crown of Conquest. And I think that Sara Pezzini or Liz could both do for Buffy, as they're like strong female scents with clean, feminine touches. -
You can't get an imp of it from the lab unless you purchase a whole Salon pack, but if you get a chance or find it on the forums, I'd recommend trying Silence. It's a very blue, watery sort of scent to me. There are a lot of interesting aquatics in The Salon too (and some snow/ozone ones with a different sort of aquatic feel). Aquatics usually turn to soap on me, but I really like Sea of Glass (bright, smooth, sea green and blue feeling aquatic) and Bayou (swampy, mossy aquatic) of the ones that you have listed. If you're interested in purchasing Carnaval LEs, Banded Sea Snake is really nice too. And if you like coconut at all, I'd recommend Obatala for something a bit different with an aquatic edge.

I think that this smells like a clean laundry type of scent. It reminds me of clean clothes and dryer sheets. It's not really what I was expecting from the listed notes. I don't get anything like books, incense, leather or wax. My husband smelled this and just said that it smells clean and fresh to him. Not for us, unfortunately.

I love Misericordia in the bottle, but the opoponax amps up and kills the other notes on my skin. In the bottle and on my skin at first, I get an herbal lavender, sweet & juicy black currant, and hints of resins. It's really pretty, and black currant is one of my favorite bpal notes ever (the red currant is sour and off on me, but the black currant smells dark, fruity, candy-sweet, juicy, and wonderful). I could see this being unusual and gorgeous on someone who doesn't amp up the opoponax (which, on me, is like a syrupy, intensely sweet resin and hints of black pepper). I'm going to be putting this one in my scent locket, though.

I don't love this as much as I thought I would. I think that I favor a sweeter, fresher smelling rose, and this is definitely a dry, dark, perfumey rose on me. Then I get mostly candle smoke and saffron underneath the rose. Saffron always has a cheap potpourri spiciness to it on my skin, and I get that here. I like the soft, dark smokiness here (not sharp or gritty, but an exotic, gentle smokiness), but the rose and saffron overpower it and leave me smelling like bad potpourri...

Silenti was heavy on the lilac & wisteria when it was fresh (sweet, waxy, heavy, purple floral) with the myrrh giving it a resinous, golden edge and the moss giving it a sour, swamp-y quality. I sort of liked it, but found it too heavy and powdery to wear much. Unfortunately, it has not improved with age. Oddly, this now doesn't have a floral smell to it at all. Aged, this is mostly Spanish moss, which is sour & unpleasant on my skin, with a backdrop of dry incense smoke and baby powder. My bottle is going to swaps...

This smells very fruity to me for some reason, like a perfumey, sweet, watery, dark sort of berry. I can also smell the cool, soft, slightly powdery lily. In the drydown, I'm getting something that smells like a hint of burnt rubber, but it's mostly a perfumey fruity-floral scent :/. Sanctus smells like a bad drugstore perfume on me. Cloying fruit, a touch of floral, and lots of sharp, perfumey musk. I love frankincense, but I don't get anything resinous or incense-like from this blend. The sharp musk here gives me a vicious headache and the intense sweetness makes me nauseous.

Transeo smells slightly like red wine on me, but a less heavy sort of red wine. It's like red wine lightened up with a fresh splash of orange juice and a cool, sweet berry. I also smell red rose, but I don't know where I'm getting that from. In the drydown it's like a fruity, fresh sort of wine, a hint of rose perfume, and a creamy, soft orange blossom note. I was expecting this to have a men's cologne feel, but it smells very womanly on me. I like this a lot. It smells very sexy, beautiful, and confident.

The jasmine in Vespillo reminds me of why I hate jasmine notes. The jasmine here is sour and a bit like body odor, and gives off an impression of something rotting to my nose. The patchouli and sage have this dry, earthy, soft, slightly herbal feel that I like, but I can't stand the jasmine. The combination of earth + the rotten smell of the jasmine is creepy, but not something that I want to wear. I can't pick out the clove, neroli, or iris at all. Jasmine amps up on my skin, and the jasmine here doesn't work on me.

Smelling this in the bottle, Tombeur is all Snake Oil and lavender. I usually like lavender, but this lavender smells very astringent and almost like it has an edge of vinegar to it. I don't know how to describe Snake Oil exactly (oily, incensey, dark). I don't like Snake Oil at all (smells like dirty hair on me), but I like a lot of the Snake Pit and Snake Oil blends. On my skin, this loses its sharp/vinegar edge and actually smells quite nice. The lavender is strong, but it settles into a sweet, cool, smooth lavender that's very pleasant. The blood musk and Snake Oil blend together in a warm, red, incensey way. As it dries down, the lavender fades and the blood musk/Snake Oil combo gets stronger and slightly sour & smoky on me. I can smell hints of earthy patchouli, which I love, but it's mostly a warm red musk and incense feel. I feel like I own a lot of red musk based blends that smell similar, but better, on me than this does. The drydown has a sour, perfumey, smoky edge that I'm not loving.

VILF kinda reminds me of Romanti.Goth in the bottle. In the bottle, it has an overall dark, exotic, incensey feel with just the right amount of sweetness, a little spice from the clove, and a dry floral edge. On my skin, this instantly morphs into a sharper scent that I'm not as crazy about. It has a sharp, white, chemical-floral edge to it that makes me wonder if there's opium poppy in this blend. I'm getting a lot of that perfumey white floral sharpness . As it dries down, I still get that sharp floral feel most strongly, but I can pick up hints of the other notes as well. Every once in a while I'll smell red musk, perfumey honey, smoky leather, or spicy clove underneath the perfumey floral. I love most of the listed notes in this, so I'm sad that it's so sharp and floral on my skin. I think that this is a blend that will improve with some age, though, and it's definitely complex underneath the strong floral. VILF is a little too sharp and dry/perfumey for me at the moment.

When I first got my package o' vamps, Interfector was my favorite as I went through the bottles, which surprised me, because I usually don't like tobacco, smoke, or anything described as 'sharp.' I think that this smells warm, sultry, sweet, and slightly smoky, with a background of something like smooth lavender cologne. It reminds me of Violette Market's Vamp Lounge scent, but more wearable and gentle, and with something soft and cologne-like added in. This is actually fantastic on me. I don't think that it's sharp at all. I get a warm, sweet tobacco and what smells like a hint of lavender cologne, but it's very rich and sensual and makes me think of fragrant logs roasting away in a fireplace, without smelling really smoky or woodsy exactly. It's a delicious, sweet, sexy kind of smoky. I love this one (it has a beautiful sweetness and warmth to it), and I could see this being equally wonderful on a male or female. I'm going to be wearing this a lot, especially during the fall months.

What sableheart said about Black Pearl. If you love it and can get a bottle, I would, as the lab has mentioned that there are a lot of GC blends in danger of being discontinued from component issues. That said, I'd definitely recommend Obatala, Goblin, and Roses Pearls and Diamonds, for sure. Obatala and Goblin are both heavy on the coconut, but smell like different types of coconut to me. Goblin is my favorite GC coconut blend ever with the warm earthy notes mixed with rich coconut cream. The coconut in Roses Pearls and Diamonds is more subtle, but that's a very pretty blend if you like rose at all. I don't get any coconut at all from Shango. Brown Jenkin has that interesting, more wooden coconut husk thing going for it. I'm really loving Tiki Princess and Paper Kite for coconut blends lately. I've ordered multiple bottles of both of those.

I have trouble wearing aquatics (they're usually too sharp and soapy for me to handle), and I really like bpal's Sea of Glass. It's a bright, sweet aquatic that brings to mind that shimmery sea green color. Banded Sea Snake reminds me of Sea of Glass, but with more sweet vanilla. If you like coconut at all, you might want to try Obatala for a coconut milk + aquatic. Or you could try a watery floral like Ophelia or Desdemona. Yemaya is a pretty melon scent with this description: "Her ofrenda is a bounty of melons and grapes, strewn with the petals of the flowers of motherhood, draped with sea mosses." It doesn't smell particularly aquatic to me, but it's youthful, pretty, and has the sea moss in it. -
This is like sickly sweet cherry syrup, sugary tropical punch, and a weird, sour, chemical-y edge on my skin (almost plastic-y). I can see the jolly ranchers thing, but the sour aspect here adds a harshness that doesn't make me think of candy. I might smell a hint of the watermelon hard candy in the drydown, but it's mostly cherry and a super sugary fruit punch on my skin, with a base of something oddly perfumey and sharp. All in all, it's a bit too sweet and fruity for me.

This is so interesting to think about and read other people's impressions. I have dark reddish brown hair naturally and have dyed it red, blonde, and various shades of brown. For blonde, my first thought was Hollywood Babylon, which is odd, because I usually see that as a red fragrance. I associate blonde with strawberry smells and that wholesome and playful girl next door image, I think. For blonde, I seem to split them into two categories of darker, honeyed blonde and that white/platinum blonde. For darker, warmer blonde I imagine fruity notes, honey, and sweet, milky scents. For platinum blonde I imagine more white musks, tea, icy/watery scents, and clean, crisp sharp scents. Warm, darker, honeyed blonde: Hollywood Babylon, Eat Me, Mania, Bengal, Dana O'Shee, Osun, and maybe Alice and Tamora. Platinum blonde: The Illustrated Woman, Titania, Dirty, The White Rabbit, Slippery Poppy Tincture, Maiden, Snow Glass Apples, Dorian, The Ghost, Fae. Resinous, incense, woodsy blends with sweet, warm touches seemed to be what I thought of for brunettes. Cocoa and coffee also makes me think of brown hair, especially mixed with warm woods. Voodoo, Intrigue, Inez, Sloth, Eclipse, Umbra, Brown Jenkin, Shub-Niggurath, Centzon Totochtin, Miskatonic University, Velvet, Bliss, Tombstone... I imagine spicy, fiery scents with earthy/resinous tones to represent red hair. Sin, Priala, El Dorado, War, The Ifrit, Wrath, The Smiling Spider... Black hair conjures up images of scents that I associate with darkness and dark blue (black musk, violet, lilac, dark berries, anise, leather) and scents that I think are calm, quiet, confident-sexy, or sophisticated. I get more of a floral sense from black hair. Black Opal, Bluebeard, Faith, Perversion, Whip, Bewitched, Phantom Queen (black orchid <3), L'Examen de Minuit, Morgause...

I love lilac, but this doesn't smell like lilac at all on me . AF8 goes on smelling like a sharp white floral perfume. It reminds me a little bit of hairspray and is just musky and chemical-y. It smells perfumey, not like any actual flowers. As it dries down, it starts turning to baby powder on my skin. I had to scrub this one off, as I can't handle sharp/perfumey florals or powdery scents...

Bpal's sandalwood notes tend to be soft, light, creamy/powdery wood notes. The rosewood is darker and sour smelling, in my opinion. Some of the cedar notes are very soft, dry, and pretty as well. You might want to try: *Brown Jenkin (I get a lot of sandalwood, dry coconut husk, and a hint of incense from this) *Magus (the cedar-sandalwood combo in this is woodsy and very soothing) *Mouse's Long & Sad Tale (probably not exactly what you're looking for, but I get a sweetened sandalwood feel and it's very pretty) And, of course, Fledgling Raptor Moon (recent LE) lists "hinoki wood" as a note and sounds like it might be a blend that you really enjoy. The full description is: "Warm, soft tufts of down and gleaming tawny feathers: clove, toasted sandalwood, aged patchouli, bourbon vanilla, carnation, massoia bark, hinoki wood, and West Indian Bay."

It's been a while since I've tried the released version of Dirty, but I do remember that I liked it and that it reminded me of laundry hung out to dry in a cool breeze and sweet flowerbeds. Dirty v3 seems to be sharper and more dry smelling than I remember the released version being. It makes me think of creamy white bar soap scented with sharp floral perfume, tossed in a bed of dryer sheets. I can't pick out the violet that other people have mentioned. It's a nice, very clean, soapy scent, but a little too much on the sharp and dry side of things for me. I'll have to compare it with released Dirty in the future, but I don't think that this is as soft, soothing, and wearable as the released version, if my memory is correct...

I love this so much. Lair is an amazingly intense, dark, sexy, naughty sort of scent. It's even sexier than the Dungeon room spray, and I think that this is a perfect guy scent. If I walked into a man's home and it smelled like this, I would be instantly more attracted to him. I get sexy, cool, dark leather, something like a spicy, manly musk (but nothing really warm, perfumey, or cologne-like), and a dry, sophisticated oakmoss. It's so gorgeous and sensual. I worried that this would be too simple or earthy, but it's not at all. It reminds me a little bit of The Bow & Crown of Conquest, but darker and not quite as sweet. I think that I say this every time I get a new bptp room spray, but this is my new favorite atmosphere spray.

This is light sweet violets, baby powder, and a spritz of sharp, white floral, musky perfume on my skin. The sharpness fades in the drydown and I'm left with sweet violet scented baby powder. It's too powdery for me, but not really awful. I have violet scents that I like a lot more than this one, though.

Recommend a scent for a specific dress or outfit
Little Bird replied to veronicafranco's topic in Recommendations
I could see that dress smelling like Slippery Poppy Tincture. It has that paper-white, delicate, clean floral plus the red berry and a little sexiness from the honey. Or maybe Mania for a red musk scent? The red musk gives it that red, sexy feel, and I find that the grapefruit and white musk give it a fresher, lighter edge. I could also see Roses, Pearls, and Diamonds fitting with the red & white color scheme. -
I wasn't sure what to think of this based on the other reviews, as it sounds so different on everyone. On me, I seem to amp up whatever cheap, musky scent this has going on. It's like a bad drugstore perfume on me - sharp, perfumey musk with fakey white floral undertones and something sickly sweet and slightly fruity underneath the sharpness. The drydown is a bit soapy, but all in all it's just too sharp and musky-perfumey for me to handle.

You might want to try Story Time at Dark Delicacies. I get the most wonderful lemon-y sugar cookies smell from it, along with the scent of old books in a library. It's not purely foodie, but it's one of my favorites.
