    Umbra

Dark, dark, dark...beautiful and dark. I think this is some stunning stuff. In the bottle, it seemed SO patchouli laden (not a bad thing IMHO), but it's so well balanced by the cedar, and even the vetiver seems in tune! This is just beautiful. It dries down to a woodsy, spicy mist. Just lovely.

And There Was A Great Cry In Egypt

Oh, this is beautiful! It feels like a royal, Biblical fragrance to me. It reminds me of what ancient Israel would have smelled like. It is very resinous, a little smoky, very soft and rich. On me it's mostly musk and myrrh with a little amber. Truly an inspired mix!

    Sloth

Ah Sloth! Such an indolent name for something I *think* I might be in love with! Lately I have been majorly into vetiver- I need it somehow. This imp did not disappoint. At first while wet, it was sharp and acrid, but as it dries down the sweet myrrh mixed with the vetiver and gets very soft and powdery. Dare I say, even beautiful? I like this very much.

    Black Annis

Oh Beth and lab, thanks for the imp of Black Annis How I love this! It always intrigued me when I read the description but I was worried about trying it. I don't get much civet from this, just an extremely faint note. It smells herbally, licorice-y and reminds me of what you'd smell like after a good romp in slightly damp leaves in the late fall. I like it wet, and like it even more dry. It dries to a comforting, mossy scent. Count me in the group who loves, loves, loves the old Hag Black Annis!

    Lotus Moon 2006

Oh how sweet- opium and light airy lotus. I agree with the comment that it definitely is not a big 'hit' of lotus, it is more like a subtle waft of gentle lotus tempered just a bit by the opium. On me, this is pretty consistent from application to drydown, and the scent mellows just a bit. This is really lovely; and in true BPAL fashion, it is not what I expected, but gorgeous all the same!

    Libertine

I received this in a swap and was so glad that I did! It is lovely, and I was glad it was such a soft and subtle scent on me. Lovely violet and rosewood were all I sniffed. Gorgeous! However...Have any of you had a scent that completely seemed to disappear once applied? Your skin just eats it up? This is what happens with Libertine for me. It's so pretty, I will happily keep it, but I think I need a big, big bottle.
  7. Psych! I have both Pain and Mad Hatter, so hopefully, I can watch the fireworks tonight and not get zapped, stung, bit or anything else the little flyers can do to me

    Danse Macabre

I vacillate over poor Danse Macabre. At times I love it, can't wait to slather more on, and at other times this is too potent for me. It's definitely one of the deeper, darker BPALs. I love cypress, but I can't pick out what that deep note is- maybe the oude? It almost seems like there's vetiver in here! Overall, I find this a very interesting scent and it's almost become a compulsion for me to keep this imp and to keep experimenting with it!

    Jezebel

Mmmmmmmmmm! Orange flower and honey I am glad the rose note was not predominant in this- it's perfect just the way it is. It's soft, sweet and mellow when freshly applied and becomes candy on my skin when it's dry. This is absolutely gorgeous.

    Antique Lace

Antique Lace is not what I expected at all. I expected perhaps a 'fusty' slightly older lady perfume, but this is romantic, sweet and has sensuality to it. The florals are soft, and I am telling you, I believe there's honey or fig in here! It has a sweet undercurrent that is just lovely. What a pleasant surprise!

    Urania

Urania- I wanted to LOVE you- I do like you, though! Urania is just a little too faint for my tastes, but it is an inspired mix of ozone and florals. All credit to Beth- I don't know how the heck she makes these scents, but Urania does evoke images of standing under a vast starlit night sky. I just wish Urania had a bit more presence.

    Veil

Oh, how I love this! I am not usually a floral kind of person, but this has some potency to it so it's full of well blended flowers when wet, and powdery and slightly soapy when dry (which I like, incidentally.) I have always loved lilacs; and to my nose this is full of lilac and lavender and light on the gardenia. It's just lovely.

    Eden

Ah...figgy, almondy goodness! This to me is sweet, but not overwhelmingly so. The sandalwood is quite faint, and the coconut mixes beautifully with the sweet notes of fig. I had hopes for Eden, and I was not disappointed. It is so beautiful. The drydown is soft and yummy; faint sweetness that lingers. I am so glad I tried this and will order more.

    Hetairae

A most pleasant surprise! This was a gift from a friend. I love the sweetness of the honey and fig, with the patchouli bringing it a touch of darkness. This is rich and warm on the skin. Hetairae is sophisticated but not unapproachable. What a lovely combination. I am so glad I got the chance to try this imp and to use it happily!

    Voodoo

My first impression was that I did not like Voodoo too much. Then, it started to morph. It has so many scent elements that I love, but I am not sure I like them all together. Just when I think Voodoo can go to the swap pile, I apply more and work with it again. Strange! It must be the lime drawing me in. Unusually enough, I don't love vetiver, but I love the way it comes out in Voodoo. Maybe I just ought to give in to Voodoo and admit I like it more than I thought! 6 months later...Voodoo has become a favorite! It's lime, patchouli, vetiver and clove loveliness has done me in. It is futile to resist!

    Ephemera

Oh my! This is so beautiful and evocative it can make me cry. It makes me think of love lost, and is very poignant. Although that's my first response to Ephemera, somehow it is also comforting in the end, too. It's a lovely, somehow 'old' floral- something a sweet elderly lady would wear for her husband. It makes me think of my late Mom and Dad. It's powerful in it's ability to conjure up feelings of the past. When I wear it, I think of loved ones, and loved ones lost. Beautiful.

    Wings of Azrael

Myrrh and violets? Who would have thought of this but Beth? This is beautiful! The lily of the valley softens what seems to be a bite from pepper, the myrrh is grounding and softens the pepper and the violet is subtle and adds a richness to the lilies. What a complex, incredible mixture. I will keep this in my repertoire, most definitely.

    Queen

While I can't say I love the way Queen smells, it is very interesting and very changeable on my skin. It's a grounded, earthy scent. I do, however, love the feeling of (dare I say?) control I feel when I wear this. Maybe it's in my mind, but I feel enabled when I wear Queen. What a cool effect!

    Megaera

This is a new latest favorite- I have a thing for grapefruit anyway, and the balance of the sharp citrus mixed with the sweet plum is exquisite. I like the bit of orris in it, too. This is a fragrance that mellows and becomes even more lovely as it blooms on the skin. Lovely job, Beth and lab!

    Sri Lanka

Mmmmmmmm...wood, spices, smoke, and LUST! This is one sexy scent. It reminds me of lounging in a casbah or something (not that I've ever done that- I'd like to, though!) This is a masterfully evocative scent of hot climates and sultry nights. It's a keeper.

    Cathedral

Ah, the hopes I had for this imp. Upon my first in the bottle sniff, I noticed the wood and resin and was so excited- when I applied poor Cathedral, it immediately turned to insect repellent on my skin and stayed that way all through drydown and beyond. This will have to be a swap pile imp. Doggone it.

    Paris

Ah, Paris- what a big surprise you have turned out to be! Sweet spice with lotus, lots of lotus, makes this a pleasant change of pace for me. I am finding out that I do like lotus quite a bit. This Paris has a lot of throw and a good deal of last. This imp is a keeper.

    Death on a Pale Horse

This is SO complex, I can't begin to describe this with any justice. Suffice it to say, this is exquisite. I like it more as I continue to use it. It's deep without being suffocating and it is quite mysterious. I am not usually a vetiver fan, but I like it this time! The fresh lime balances the darkness just enough. This has become a new favorite.

    Suspiro

Jasmine and lily- lovely! I didn't think I'd like this, but it caught my attention and got me hooked. It is powdery and clean. I will use Suspiro for those times when I want to wear something lighter than usual. It's soft and unassuming and sure to be reached for again and again.

    Midnight

Waaaaaaah. I can't individualize any of the notes in this scent. It's very pretty, but so subtle on me as to be barely noticeable. This would be pale, pale violet if it were a color. It's so very airy and disappears so quickly. I had hopes that this one would have some staying power, but it is not to be. I'll keep trying- maybe a heavier application would help. It really is so pretty.
