    Eden

I love almond. I love Honey. I love Fruity. I'd never really smelled fig before, so that was my wonderment. It really is a delicious scent. Almost foody at times, but overall a honeyed golden zesty deliciousness. Makes me want to lick my arm. It fits the name, makes me feel plump, lush, and like I sit around just eating fruit and naming animals all day. It didn't morph a whole lot on me. I think the honey note amped (as much as honey does...) so it kept it balanced. But the mix is just divine. If I finish off this imp, I'll be buying a bottle. I didn't really get "green" from this like others mentioned briefly. There is a touch of something natural, like sitting outside. But it's faint, and really has to be searched for. The forefront for me is most certainly honey, with the creaminess of coconut and fruity fig. Has long endurance, and the throw is medium. Which is perfect.

    Sticky Pillowcase

I feel like I tried Sticky Pillowcase back when I first got it (around halloween) but then tossed it back into the imp box and forgot what it smelled like. So I tried it today, and while it had that toffee/carmalized sugar note as a base, there was this bright fun fruity (not sugary) top note that was almost exactly like Candy Phoenix. It was basically... candy phoenix with a toffee undertone. I really love it. I wore it out, liberally slathering it, and during the day would get wafts of dark caramel-toffee-burntsugar-whatchacallit, then would get wafts of PINK. lol something pink. Strawberry? Cherry? Something fruity sugary and delicious. It lasted all day, and had enough throw that my father made a comment that I was going to turn diabetic. It didn't fade at all on me. Even the lighter notes that tend to easily vanish lasted. In fact, they're still on me after wearing it all day (though now you need to sniff the spot, when earlier it wafted) In contrast, when my younger sister tried it, the top notes vanished entirely and she was nothing but toffee. I suppose skin chemistry must have some baring on if this scent works or not. I'm going to have to go in search of a bottle of this on the forums...

    Velvet Panther

Shew. This scent was generally vetiver free. It's a note that scares me, I admit. And in Tiger, completely blew me away, in a bad way. This scent was soft, dark, but somehow cool where tiger was warm. There was a floral tinge to it that got slightly "powdery" (I'm biased and not a fan of florals, generally) however it worked well with the concept. When I sniffed my wrist, I felt like I was hugging a big cuddly panther, and inhaling pure panther. Dander and all. It wasn't as manly as I thought it would be either. It's very soft, subtle, and perfect for a panther (animals I'm in love with, by the way). Some floral (I couldn't tell one note from another) made it slightly feminine in a perfect naturey way. By the end of the day, this scent won my respect. It'll be swapped, though. Because I just can't imagine wanting to smell like a wild panther, dander and all. But it was actually kind of lovely in a way. I feel like there are a few personalities out there this scent would complement perfectly. Much much later, when almost all the notes fell asleep, vanilla and a dark muskiness lingered. If the scent were just these notes the entire time, I'd be in love.

    Velvet Tiger

Wet & wet on skin - Vetiver. vetivervetivervetiveromgwutdidIdo. Drydown - I realize, about now, that I despise vetiver. But one of my totems is a tiger, and I just could NOT pass this up. But when it calmed down? The citrus and spices poked their head out, and completely changed the entire scent. The vetiver turns into a background of dark, hot muskyness that is suiting for a tiger. The citrus gives it a jungle feel, and the spices add it that dangerous touch. I start to almost enjoy it. Almost It's just much too heavy, dark, and deep. It is VERY much spot on for what a tiger should smell like though, so I was pleased. But shew. I now know it's vetiver that scares me off (this was also a test for me, as I wasn't entirely sure if it was vetiver or another scent I disliked. I now know. Could possibly work incredibly on the right skin. Possibly male skin, that eats vetiver and likes the citrus and spice shine. Hm. Could actually be kind of sexy.

It's a very refreshing, wet (in a freshly showered sense), uplifting scent. It reminds me a bit of laundry (moving from washer to dryer ) take that as you will. Neither negative or positive. It's got a slight green feel to it, like crisp lettuce. Faintly green, not an overwhemling have-some-grass vibe. Splashed over with something citrusy. It ended up mostly being soap-like on me. Like liquid handsoap. In a very good way, mind you. It's just that I'm not a huge fan of that. It had a sort of tartness to it that reminded me of more commercial brands, as well. It was also very unisex to me. Reminded me pleasantly of aftershave (I mean, after the aftershave, licking a guys cheek sort of vibe) yet also would be acceptable on someone girly. Maybe for the more "metrosexual" men out there. I lump this as a "laundry" scent. As I'm a foody fruity patchouli gal, it'll be swapped. But it wasn't unpleasant. It didn't have insane throw, but it lasted.

    Venice

In imp this is lemon drops. Wet on skin, rose and lemon. Very pleasing. Drying on skin.... oh that jasmine. Why do you hate me so much? Ruining all my parties. It turns into lemon versus jasmine. All the others notes got fed up and went home early. However, this is the closest jasmine has come to being acceptable on me in a blend. And I despise it, so that's saying something. I love rose, however. So the hate for jasmine and the love for rose end up just making this mediocre. I was hoping the red currant would pop more, but I can scarcely smell the fruit at all ;_;. Yep. Just Jasmine and lemon drops.

    Rumpelstilzchen

I feel stupid. I read over some of the other reviews before I wrote my own, and I thought "Smoke? Ash? Wha?". So I had to resniff the imp because when I tested it, I missed it. But I didn't miss it. I just interpreted the ash and smoke as male. I would go camping a lot as a child, and over my teen years, and even now. And this smell, to me, is how the guys I crushed HARD on always smelled like. Smoke, dirt (cause guys do the fires, ya know) and a tart tinge of man sweat to make you swoon. With a splash of cologne or some kind of deodorant to try to say somehow acceptable. I loved the scent. I'm going to go slather it on my man and gross him out for a while (then swap it. He's more a clean linen kind of guy. But it's my job in life to dirty him up ). But then, I love mansweat and nothing is more of a turn on than a smoky guy after a day of hiking and fiddling with fires so we don't starve while we're out backpacking. Yum. I guess I have a thing for rumplestilzchen.

I know it's tea rose, and that probably has nothing to do with tea. But I kept getting wafts of something that make me think of when my younger sister gets out her tea set and makes us all drink tea. I dislike it, by the way. wet: Soap. Like, sharp liquid soap. Not that powdery soap vibe. Drying: oh no more soap, good. drying..: omg where's that rose coming from? (forgot I had it on, suddenly whammed in the face with the amazing ROSE throw here. Nice. Made me happy, because rose is one of the few florals I like) Gone: Oh. Rose. You're gone. *checks watch* what, not even two hours?? Overall - this rose was just beautiful to me. It boomed as well and was just rose rose everywhere, but not in an overpowering way. A lot of these oils don't really throw, you know? This did. But it didn't last very long. It was a very.. clean rose, to me. I don't really get the wicked twisting aspect. Hm.

    Tamora

I got this as a frimp, so decided why not. When first applied, this is a really weird dark scent that reminds me of snake oil (which was a huge flop on me). Which makes me pretty sure it's vanilla. but then maybe its the sandalwood. I need to explore more, as my understanding of notes is limited. I dont even have a clue what heliotrope smells like. As it wears, a sweetness emerges that sits very lightly on the skin. A little powdery, which means it must be a sweetness from one of the florals, or the floral is merging with sweetness of vanilla? It does have an element that's getting thrown nicely, but its very soft, deep, and I'm going to say dark. But a girly dark. Makes me think of some seductress in her off hours, lurking in the dark corner of a room, just waiting. Not a winner for me overall. It ended up being a powdery girly snake oil on my skin. Something doesn't go right. *goes to slather on her sister to see what happens*

    Velvet Cthulhu

I got this out of a decant circle because the notes were too bizarre to pass up sniffing. But really, this scent is truly bizarre. I put it on, on first wiff my eyes water from the tang. Minty, wasabi, whatever it makes it zesty and makes you cringe something fun. But then it dries down to a wet green scent for me. It's also a bit powerful in a sharp way. The base notes, are there any?, are lost on me. So it's all top-notes and zest. Not something I can wear often. Then, suddenly, the scent is entirely gone and I wonder if I had anything on at all. o_o On an amusing note, I later ended up retesting it and getting it on my skin with Velvet Pink Kitty. The combination was oddly delicious... I may be mixing like a mad scientist soon. Wow like, really delicious. *slathers both on wrist and sits sniffling in awe*

    Velvet Pink Kitty

This scent is that pink marshmallow salad concoction at the family reunion every year. My mom says it's called Heavenly Hash. My dad says it's called Heavenly Rice. I say it's a pink fluff of evil. It doesn't morph or change. Levels are the same. Throw is consistent. I sniff, and all I can see is me poking this weird blob on my plate, asking my mother for a fifth time if it's actually SAFE to eat it. Yep. Heavenly Hash. I'm keeping it for my amusement. But it's not something I could wear without laughing all day.

    Velvet Nudie

I snagged all the velvets in a decant circle, this one included. Its very lemony, but not pledge at all. It actually made me think of lemon drop shots (alcohol) that are popular with my friends when we go out drinking. Candied lemons. But then as it sits on skin it starts to go more floral, and I'm not a floral lover at all so I'm biased. It gets a sort of soapy smell, and I fall out of love with it. However, the longer it sits, the more I love this skin musk under it all. I'm a fan of the labs musks, and skin musk makes me swoon. It makes this scent sexy in a very natural way. No cloying perfumes or bawdy romances. This is sexual innocence, freshly washed I'll be swapping it, but thats just because Im a patchouli, tonka, or leather girl. Not really floral. I was just so curious about another scent with skin musk that I couldn't pass it up. It's definitely alluring, feminine, and girly while still being sexy. I'd find it really appealing on a few friends of mine. Or maybe a drop of it in my laundry...

    Velvet Dogs Playing Poker

I got in a circle for the entire set of velvets, and its been quite a treat. The velvet dogs looked to be one of my favorites from the notes. I adored Miskatonic U. (even though it turned into solid toffee, I still like to eat my wrist) so the irish coffee was a win. And I am absolutely in love with Tonka. So I was biased from the start. I also was lucky enough to get the bottle for this, and not just a decant. Woot! It didn't get quite so dry on me. Tonka is a winner for me, everytime I use it the rest of the notes end up vanishing and I'm left with that spicey vanilla the next morning to wake up with. I'm in love. At first the scent is sweet, buttery, and delicious. Then as it wears, it does get a little "dusty", but not baby-powdery to me. I'm rather sensitive to notes that do that (I hate jasmine, can't stand actual baby powder, and I dont even like snake oil because of a cloying effect). This is more of a smokey dust. Which, well, that would be the cigars, eh? At this point in wearing it I become aware that it's true to its name, but its getting a little manly for me. The dryness is dry, not dusty, and sort of reminds me of cracked leather (but not leather notes at all, just that sort of dryness. lol) and I suddenly want to slather it on my man. However, on him, tonka does not sit the same o_o. I love the scent though. Its a warm one, and true to its name. It didn't do anything odd on me, and like always, Tonka was there in bed with me the next morning. With a little leftover cig. smoke as well.

    Wiley's Swamp

This scent was also somewhat buttery and thick on me. It's sweet, but not sugary sweet. It borders on a toffee-like scent I've gotten in other perfumes, like Gluttony. But it does have an almost hidden tang, my skin just isn't amping that at all. It's also a bit powdery, somehow. It's one of those scents that stay in my nasal passages unpleasantly. (I hate baby powder/catlitter/jasmine for this reason.) So if you're an odd one like me that hates those scents, be weary. It's not horrible- if a friend had this on I'd be able to find it a nice scent- but I can't stand it around me all day. It is foresty and wet. But brighter than I thought it would be. It's more of a rainy day while camping, less of a rotting bog. Lots of throw, long lasting, I wont be able to wash this scent off me. It stuck. I didn't notice tonka (I ADORE tonka, the spicey yum makes me happy- If it's used, it didn't go well with other notes for me) but it does have the same level of note. Something on the deeper, darker end of scents which I want to like, but the powdery-feel is too much for my nose. It smells delicious on nose-to-skin, but has that catlitter effect when wafting. Edit: It's been *counts* over 11 hours? And it's still on my skin. I was wrong. There IS tonka in this, or something similar. Because tonka clings to me for literally days. Sniffing my wrist now, it has that warmth left on skin that tonka does (as I discovered when I tried Dee), but with a still water-logged almost floral touch. This scent has amazing endurance. Bizarre. I wish I enjoyed that florally powder, because this would win otherwise.

    Machu Picchu

In vial : Fruity, sweet, light, airy. Reminds me of other fruity scents. Wet: Fruity tones down, it's not very sweet but is a very natural sweet, with floral blooms. Drydown: This thing grows incredible throw on me. The floral/amber combination gets really perfumy- but at first it's pleasant and girly. I'm not really a girly person, but I can tolerate it. later : It just kept clouding up on me. The throw still a bit intense with my chemistry. It's no longer sweet, at all. It's more like potpourri, and the amber makes it rather dusty. (Amber by itself works well on me, with amazing throw, but amber + the florals in this = bad for me) You ever had that feeling when kitty litter gets kicked up, and then stays in your nasal passage too long, all dusty and RAWR worthy? This did that on my chemistry. My skin ate the fruit. Not a hint of it left. Too bad. I loved how it smelled in the vial. Lasted all day, with crazy throw. Something in this clung to me.

    Loviatar

I'm in love with a good number of BPAL leathers, so I tried Loviatar as well. This is not the same deliciousness in other scents. It's curious. Imp: Sort of hard to smell, for me. Too much to pick things out. Initial on skin: The myrrh is powerful. Tangy woody raw cut something. I don't like myrrh very much. It drowns out the leather. The amber is present and rounding out the blend, but adding a slightly powdered feel to the myrrh. The musk is just beginning to unravel. And my experience with musk is that it takes a while to truly bloom. I'm not happy with this stage, and contemplate trying to wash it off. Later on skin: The myrrh does calm down, thankfully. But still more present than I'd prefer (I'll be avoiding it in the future). However, the leather sweetens up as the myrrh dies down. It's much more pleasant, and much more similar to other leather notes I've smelled before. Overall: This blend fits the bill for Loviatar. It's powerful, good throw, and really in your face . It's neat, but not my thing.

    Calico Jack

Calico Jack is certainly matching the description. However, It's also the scent that has established fully in me that I dislike "ozone" scents. I'm not sure, technically, what it is that makes this scent but I've ran across it a few times. Under the guise of something "Electric", "Metallic", "Ozone" and "Rain.". Now sea. It's a very perfumey/cologny scent that's light, and reminds me of sunday mornings with irons, hot showers, and moms old perfume. It's not -bad- or unpleasant, but it's not something I enjoy. However, one of the first things I was told when I joined BPAL was to give everything a chance, you'll be surprised. So I wont give up on those notes entirely . Calico Jack was fun, I just wish it smelled more authentic to me. I think my skin must amp this ozone note, and it drowns out everything else. I didn't really get sea-salt. I just sort of got ozone with a background of maybe a once was pirate. :/ how depressing. I also adore leather notes, and they tend to wear well and long on me, but in this case it was also overpowered. Oh well. I'll keep searching for refreshing blends anyways
  18. caffinatedangel

    Drink Me

Drink Me reminded me a lot of Gluttony and Miskatonic U. Miskatonic has a wood-y, papery after effect. While gluttony has a more toasted-toffee effect. Drink Me is a bit sweeter, and a bit yummier in all honesty. I didn't think I was much of a foody person, but these scents are a bit delightful. I can't see myself wearing them all too often, however. But on the occasion I want to feel delectable I know what to grab. I'm not very good at picking out scents in Foody blends, they just give me an overall feel of fullness. lol This is no exception. I can tell it's sweeter, a note of something tangy/fruity/something, and then toffee. My god, I love toffee. Keeping this. Has nice throw, and sticks around all day for me. Not bottle material, but fun.

    Grand Guignol

I got this simply for the mention of Apricot. I ran across BPAL's apricot first in Depraved, and simply fell in love so I set out to try it in other blends. This was not a disappointment. I have yet to try March Hare (I've been surviving on trades, and hadn't seen it in trades when I had some to offer) - but I'm pleased to hear from a review or two that it's similar. It means more scents out there can appease my apricot want. This is really lovely for me, and it isn't that short lived on my skin for some reason. It's potent, and has a decent throw on me. It's boozy, but not repugnant with it. The apricot is perfect, although I had feared it would be a more diluted apricot because it's brandy, not solid apricot. It also has a chilling, darker side to it somehow. I don't quite know what notes do it, or if I imagine it, but I like it quite a bit. Keeping this one.

    Phobos

This is lemon drops in a bottle. Either the candy, or the drink. Your pick. Sweet, tangy, citrus. Gender neutral to my nose (I'd personally love to drool over a guy that smells like lemon drops). Makes me think of Dumbledore from Harry Potter (he was eating lemon drops in book one, when you first meet him. It's a wet, juicy citrus splash on a summer day. I love it. I was prepared to hate this scent. I hate grapefruit. I don't understand why... but I can't stand the taste, the smell, or even looking at one . But seriously, I was ready to chuck this one at my sister. Fortunately I didn't have to. (My sister was sad, though. She loved it as well.) - The grapefruit blends will with other notes, and isn't offensive to me. Hurrah. Just pure yum.

    Masabakes

I've tried this scent out countless times. It wasn't an instant love, but each time I wore it, something new stood out and I just can't figure this scent out. It's so insane, and curious. This is pretty much solid mimosa, for me. And a dab of mandrake strangeness. Although, a few of the times I tried it, it completely ignored mimosa and was solid black current. Completely bizarre. this scent is never the same on me. I don't understand it, so I have to keep it for a "what will happen today?" moment. Overall, it has the same sort of feeling and elements to it. It keeps a spiceyness each time, as well as a lightness that isn't empty. (Meaning it's uplifting, but not faint.) It's just bizarre, and I can't help but sniff it a million times a day to wonder what it's up to. It morphs during the day, from day to day, and I can only imagine what aging will do to it. A completely unhelpful review, lol. But I love this scent for the pure insanity of it. My nose and skin just have a field day with it each time. That's worth wearing out this imp. lol

    Midnight Kiss

My little imp of this stuff is naturally a bit old by now, but I still gave it a try. In the imp it was solid cocoa. I was so excited, I could hardly contain myself. On skin, it changed a bit. It was a lot like others had described: cherry cola. But not so much cola, it was a lot of chocolate. It was dark, deep, heavy chocolate yet light, bright, cherry tang. It was a bit offsetting, as the two didn't meld together very well on me. It was ok, and certainly unique, but not quite me. The cherry had too much pop, and the chocolate was too dusty somehow. I imagine a lot may have to do with age. But it was interesting.

    The Lion

I got this imp, mostly to find out what amber smells like, exactly. I wasn't sure, so thought it would be fun to see. I realized I enjoy amber. I know it can go slightly powdery/soapy, but isn't all that bad. It's just a warm, rounded, mellow scent on me. It says it was a spiced amber, but the spice was rather understated on me. I did enjoy it, and it was most certainly a lion scent. Very Leo, actually. It was simple, but I expected as much. So although this will be traded/frimped, I now know that amber isn't the devil, and I can wear it happily. It's very smooth, warm, calming, proud is a good description. Savanna warm, but endless cloudless skies smooth. It isn't very extravagant, and for someone maybe looking for a simple, understating scent just to wear -always- (I thought about giving this to my mother, as she isn't very into perfumes but doesn't mind something simple. Also a leo, and would enjoy the Lion reference.) or perhaps someone looking for a good layering agent, this could be lovely.

The Wild Men of Jezirat al Tennyn (2006)

I tried this imp a few times, and each time after sniffing throughout the day, and thinking on it, reflecting, etc. The next day I'd forget entirely what the scent smelled like. For me, that means it wasn't very remarkable. Too many of BPAL's scents are incredible, unique, and unforgettable. So this will be traded. However, on retrying, and cracking out notes... I realize the scent is a decent one, but just not very distinct. I tend to -adore- patchouli, but I had a hard time picking it out in this blend. It was spicey, of course, but not a very full or heady spice I prefer (like bengal). Often, I'd put this on to try again, then want to go out and feel not quite right, so I'd layer it with bengal and -adore- it. (Bengal would rule, with just the extra spice kick from Wild Men) However, even though it was slightly spicy, it was a lot more mellow than I thought it would be. I always underestimate how mellow cloves and amber can smell. They have a sort of full-spice to it, but it wasn't very tangy. It's possible it was out of balance on my skin, but I was unable to find what may have gone wrong. It wasn't horrible or anything, I think I just expected more bang. :/ oh well.
  25. caffinatedangel

    Black Cat

A very tricky kitty, indeed. Used most often as a key to bringing back the joy one needs to have in life in order for living to feel worthwhile. Brings back a sense of delight in simple pleasures, and creates a surge of childlike curiosity and a youthful sense of fun. This blend can also be used to reverse troublesome lesser crossings, create a playful air of catlike sexuality, and, because cats will be cats, it can also be used to throw minor, irritating or bothersome hexes, causing small amounts of chaos and disruption to your foes. Firstly, I didn't expect too much from this scent. The way others described it, didn't seem to be my cup of tea. However, I can't pass up a black cat when offered to me The scent was ok, and amusing. It smelled like a witches cat. Which is amusing, and of course probably partly my minds issue. Notes I picked out (lol, naturally my VERSION of notes) - Cat fur. It was slightly static-y, like when your cat jumps on your desk and rubs against the monitor, then yourself. It wasn't entirely unpleasant, but certainly invoked that nose-tickling fuzzy warm fur feel. - Catnip. The aforementioned cat must have had a catnip toy in it's mouth, apparently wanting to play. Or a refill. It's hard to tell. - Witch. Lol well naturally not the cliche of a witch. But like when you come home (if you're like me and slightly witchy) from work/school, open the door to find a sister/brother/lover/other/old you had left incense on, or out. Combined with fresh pressed herbs from whatever project being worked out. It's an earthy, slightly but not quite medicinal feel, along with a touch of something like love, or wit, or amusement. Joy? I certainly associate true love (my ideas) with wit, amusement, games, and childish fun. This invokes all of that. I didn't bother trying to figure out -real- notes, I enjoyed the image I got much too well. This scent will be traded, simply because I can't see myself wearing it, nor do I use oils for my version of rituals often. However, this has a lot of fun about it. It is most -certainly- the smell of a witches cat. Black cat, spot on. It's worth a sniff, at the least. It did turn more floral/soapy on me as it wore through the day. I forgot to mention the black cat is exceptionally clean... or got into something.
